A Chinese-owned Panda Supermarket in the Jabi area of Abuja have been shut down by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, as part of measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

The FCCPC said in a series of tweets that it had confiscated some frozen food items illegally imported from China.

The pictures of some of the frozen food items posted on Twitter showed that they had expiry dates of 2089 which further aroused suspicion that they were not certified by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

The agency said in a series of tweets, “The FCCPC inspected Panda Supermarket, Jabi, on credible reports that it discriminated and had a concealed area for Asian nationals. The allegation was confirmed. Seafood and animal products imported illegally from China were discovered.

Broadcaster, 96, Nicholas Parsons was today praised as a 'broadcasting legend' and 'an icon in the world of British comedy' following his death. Parsons was surrounded by his family after a short illness.

The host of the Just a Minute, made an extraordinary contribution to film, TV and radio over a 74-year career which saw him host the BBC Radio 4 programme since its inception in 1967 and the long-running ITV game show Sale Of The Century.


The broadcaster, who had been married to his second wife Ann since 1995 and received a CBE in 2014 for services to charity, become a television regular on The Benny Hill Show following his acting debut in 1946.

Fellow BBC presenters lined up to pay tribute, with Graham Norton saying his death was 'the sound of the final whistle', referring to the end of a round on Just A Minute, and Nick Robinson calling him a 'broadcasting giant'.

Parsons, who was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, was best known for the long-running Radio 4 show where panellists have to speak for 60 seconds without hesitation, deviation or repetition.

Today, his agent Jean Diamond said: ‘Nicholas passed away in the early hours of January 28 after a short illness at the age of 96. He was with his beloved family who will miss him enormously and who wish to thank the wonderful staff at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital.’

Among those paying tribute was BBC Director-General Tony Hall, who said: ‘Very few people have done so much to entertain audiences over the decades, and no one deserves to be called a broadcasting legend more than Nicholas Parsons.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared the security outfit by South-West states known as Operation Amotekun as illegal

In a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Dr Umar Gwandu, the government said the establishment of Amotekun is not backed by any known law in the land.

The statement reads in part: “The setting up of the paramilitary organization called “Amotekun” is illegal and runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.

An ambulance conveying the body of one Mrs. Onyemata said to be mother a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Alex Onyemata, a serving under Okigwe Catholic Diocese, was gutted by fire over the weekend.

The corpse was reportedly rescued from the fire caused by petrol leakage while the ambulance was on its way to Mercy Mortuary in Umulogho community of Obowo, Imo State.

Eyewitnesses account, family members and other mourners rescued the corpse from the fire incident which occurred on Saturday January 11, at Owerri-Umuahia expressway. The corpse was subsequently carried in a stretcher to the mortuary by the mourners who were forced to walk.

The general overseer of Living Faith Church popularly known as Winners Chapel, David Oyedepo is causing a stir online at the senior sack some church officials for allegedly looting the church’s treasury.

Oyedepo, who during an empowerment summit organized for the church’s ordained workers on Saturday, said some “very high up officials,” including accountants, turned themselves into a network of fraudsters — the very vices they were “trusted to prevent.”

A 14-day-old baby girl was rescued by the Lagos State Government after her parents refused to allow her have blood transfusion, citing religious beliefs.

The state government, through the Office of the Public Defender, was said to have applied for a court order under the Child Rights Law.

After a clash with members of the Jehovah Witness who had mobilised to resist the rescue of the baby, the little girl was eventually taken to the hospital where the blood transfusion was done.

The Head of Public Affairs, OPD, Mahmud Hassan, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

He noted that the child was born prematurely at a private hospital in Surulere to the family of one Mr Emmanuel Onokpise of Abata Close, Orile-Iganmu.

Hassan said the baby was discovered to be “severely jaundiced” and was recommended for blood transfusion to survive.

The Attorney-general of the federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has said the federal government was right in detaining journalist Omoyele Sowore and Sambo Dasuki despite court orders for their release.



Malami revealed this on Thursday, January 2nd when he appeared on NTA programme.



Sowore, convener of the Revolution Now movement/presidential candidate and Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA), were held by the Department of State Services (DSS) long after several court orders were issued for their release.



Speaking during the programme, Malami, who later asked the DSS to release both men, said the government never erred in holding them despite the court orders. He said the government has the right to still detain Sowore and Dasuki until an appeal against the orders is determined by the supreme court.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announce its decision to replay military with police in the fight against insurgency in the country.

According to FG it has decided that the Nigeria Police Force will now takeover from the military in the ongoing internal security operations in various parts of the country by the first quarter of next year.

The police has the primary responsibility of providing internal security and will assume its duties fully in such areas from next year.

Consequently, the military will pull out from ongoing internal security operations in various parts of the country.
