Christianity EtcRe: Atheism Is Not An African Thing?? A "European/foreign" Thing??? by logicboy01(op): 7:33pm On Jun 27, 2012
Ptolomeus: No. We dont have that rule.
That kind of taboo, are generally local, and due to local conceptions.
In many African peoples, there is a prohibition against eating certain animals. For pregnant women, perform certain acts ... but not everywhere the same. I can not judge whether it is good or bad each of these things, but I can say is that they have a reason, it is not witchcraft or anything satanic (Christians would say jajajaja!)
But if you one day have a chance, ask at your village the reason for this tradition. Share it or not, you will see that is part of a tradition that aims to respect something.
This is not something whimsical.
Okay, I will find out! I will ask my uncle
I agree logicboy. Atheism is not a product of any nationality but it may be strongly promoted by specific nationals. It’s as absurd as saying that homosexuality is a product of the west.
Just because certain societies may choose not to recognize something doesn’t mean it doesn’t or never existed. Moreover there are and were people who operated undercover for fear of rebuke or ostracism.
At best one may say atheism is not a traditional African concept.
Good, I 100% agree with you.

There are atheists everywhere. Africa is a very spiritual continent but that doesnt mean we dont have skeptics

Ptolomeus: Dear friend:
Atheism is not a foreign religion, simply because (point 1) is not a religion.
I agree with the aterísmo is a global phenomenon.

I let my discrepancies raised with the treatment of paganism.
I suppose that, as elsewhere, there must have been people opposed to paganism. I do not know if they were decapitated, or were not.

Regarding your grandmother let me tell you something (and I do it amicably, for I appreciate you)
Write on the ground may seem silly (no more nonsense to kneel before a statue of plaster, or imagine a paradise with 20 virgins).
You wonder why this woman did not agree to write down? Some pagan acts may seem silly (not more silly that many acts of Christian or Islamic), but they have their explanation.
You may not agree with this explanation (I did not ask you to share it) but it certainly is part of a philosophical and a tradition. There is no ignorance.
Let's see: I'm not contradicting your statement, but I am saying that not all acts are stupid and ignorant heathen.

A big hug!
y... vamo arriba la celeste hermano!
jajaja

Writing on the ground is forbidden in my African Village. Do you have this rule in Uruguay paganism?

OLAADEGBU: In your attempt to make atheism "intellectual" you want are claiming that Einstein didn't believe in God. This is what Einstein had to say in response to your likes:

"In the view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognise, there are yet people who say there is no God. But what makes me really angry is that they quote me for support of such views" (The Expanded Quotable Einstein, Princeton University Press, page 214).

If your claim to authority is to cite Einstein you can see with this quote of his that you have no leg to stand on.
Agnostic not atheist

In a 1950 letter to M. Berkowitz, Einstein stated that "My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment."[15] Author Anthony Alioto has referred to Einstein as an "agnostic theist"[16] sometimes called a form of deism or panentheism.
Christianity EtcRe: What Does The Bible Mean Whenever It Uses This Word? by logicboy01: 6:24pm On Jun 27, 2012
OLAADEGBU: Do we have to go over this again?

When I look at a building, how do I know that there was a builder? I couldn't want a better evidence that there was a builder than to have the building in front of me. I don't even need faith to know that there was a builder. All I need are eyes that can see and a brain that can think.

The same principle applies to the existence of God. When I look at creation, how can I know that there was a Creator? Creation reveals to me that there is a Creator. I couldn't want a better evidence that there is a Creator than to have the creation in front of me. I don't need faith to believe in a Creator, all I need are eyes that can see and a brain that can think.
Nonsense, when you look at rain, is it created by the creator or just part of a water cycle? Abeg comot with your intelligent design nonsense. Intelligent design has been debunked
Christianity EtcRe: Why Do People, Even Christians, Always Attribute Evil/pain/loss To God? by logicboy01: 6:18pm On Jun 27, 2012
FXKing2012: I have been wondering why people always attribute such things as car crash, death, sickness, plane crash, poverty, war, etc etc to God. Do you really think God enjoys seeing people suffer? Do you think God needs the weapon of the devil to operate effectively and efficiently? It's so sad when even so called Christians attribute human sufferings to God and they try to suggest that God caused it.

We serve a God of love who loves us so much that He gave His Son to die for our sins. He does not have anything to gain by seeing us suffer, so pls do away with the idea that God is behind our sufferings as a human race.

GOD LOVES YOU ALL!
Sorry to open with an insult but you are quite ignorant. There is no easy way to tell you about the flaws in your statements.

1) The bible shows how God caused painful suffering in the old testament. Killing Jobs family just to test his faith. Giving the Egyptians (some of whom were innocent) plagues and killing their innocent first born children.

2) God created, everything according to you, therefore, he created leprosy, earthquakes, floods and suffering

Wiki-Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.

Christianity EtcAtheism Is Not An African Thing?? A "European/foreign" Thing??? by logicboy01(op): 6:06pm On Jun 27, 2012
This is the argument that I am getting from religious people here on Nairaland. I humbly disagree. Atheism is a worldwide phenomenon.

The people that make this argument are the religious people (christians and muslims) in retaliation to the annoying fact that Islam and Christianity are both foreign religions that came with slavery of black people in Nigeria. The statment that atheism is a foriegn religion is a shameful act of revenge on the part of religious folks who can not accept that their religions were not meant for them and existed hundred of years ignoring them in West Africa.

Here is my rebuttal

1) Atheism is not a religion. Anyone can be an atheist, anywhere. It is a disbelief in God. No rituals or customs or baptism or conversion, just a disbelief.

2) There have always been people that have been doubters of God or gods in every race, religion or group of people at any time. They were killed for their doubts in the past but now humans have mostly evolved past that stage. Of course, atheism is always in the minority or are mostly invisble because people dont want to be killed for being outsiders. The Japanese say "a nail that sticks out will be hammered"

3) Following point number 2, even in our African pagan history, there were men who went against the oracles or the gods. Some of them were banished from villages or beheaded. Some of them won wars without the oracle and became gods themselves as kings. There are people in the villages who are born to pagan households but dont believe in the pagan idols or religion. My grandmother is one of them

4) My grandmother from southern Nigeria in the village was an atheist or at least, a skeptic. She was born to a pagan family and retained the pagan status but she never threw things in the river or did any of the customary practices of her pagan religion.

When me and my siblings asked her about Jesus when she visited us in the city, she asked us why she should believe in Jesus that she is more concerned about her children and grandchildren who she has raised without Jesus. Furthermore, there was an instance in which she proved her disbelief in the pagan religion. In my mothers village, it is forbidden to write on the ground (sand). As children from the city, we did not know this and we were playing with clay and writing on the ground. A woman came to shout at us and stopped us from writing on the ground. We ran inside to tell my grandmother who was furious and came outside but the woman was gone. My grandmother said that we should not mind the villagers with their useless superstitions.

Atheism is a worldwide phenomenon and not a foreign religion. Agree or disagree?

Martian: Calm down. I said religion/philosophy in order not to give religionists the excuse to call me a "communist" or something like that.
Also, I didn't claim anyone of us is an "intellectual" but we do have ideas and all philosophy consists of ideas.
Anyway, ill just add your name to the list........cheer01 etc happy now?
No vex.....Cheers01 is my alter ego grin grin grin

I was just saying that it would be pointless to have such a section as long as your philosophy is on religion because religion itself is philosopy. The bible itself has philosophy.
Christianity EtcRe: Big B@ng Did Not Need God by logicboy01: 2:21pm On Jun 27, 2012
JeSoul: Went unnoticed? not a chance.

If you re-read my post you'll see I do not include mentions on the existence of God anywhere - that wasn't the focus of the article. Yes you titled the thread same as the author of the article but you both misquoted the scientist - the title is an absolute statement, while the quote within the article is not - and in the context of scientific discussions it is a very important distinction.

Secondly, the author & the astrophysicist are trying to play ball here... you title the article/research "big bang did(may) not need God" - they have already introduced God into the matter! and then try to side-step the landmine by saying "let's just leave it at the laws of physics".

If they truly wanted a strictly scientific discussion and were not attempting to comment on the involvement (not existence) of a "God" then why the misleading title? its a lazy article. The author knows throwing out certain catch phrases will illicit a certain audience/reaction and that's what he did.

and oh, my BP (as of few days ago) is fine jare smiley. I just dislike lazy work that pretends to masquerade as science. As one who careers in science, it is particularly embarrassing to see. And as a spiritual person I especially enjoy reading new scientific discoveries that push the boundaries of what we already know.

There really was a golden age of Nairaland Religion section. What happened??
This golden age was before my time here on NL! I still read 2009/2010 articles! Even some far back!

I guess many christians and muslims did not want to share their religious debates with unbelievers. They got tired of it. I'm sure many users prefer to dicuss theological issues with fellow believers. Debate gets tiring when your side is on the losing side that is always attacked.

Just my opinion

And for emphasis I repeat:

You are still thinking in Euclidean terms.
Einstein's theories support my position. Now go study a bit more else you 'll continue talking through your hat.
Does the moon or mars or venus rotate at the same rate as the earth? Hmm?

If you were living on planets, your calculation of days and night would be different.

If you are thinking of wormholes, those wormholes better be on earth or you are entering another time in another galaxy
