It never comes as a surprise. Award winners are told ahead of time every time in nearly all facets of modern civilization. Remember your class valedictorian, s/he was told ahead of time to prepare a speech.

A lot of people have been robbed over the years. Like it's a long list stretching to before the start of the CR7-LM10 era. I'm just glad Modric didn't join the list.

Because if CR7 had won, the complaints would have continued for two weeks at most then it'd die down. Everyone will move on. He deserved it, he got it, case closed. Unto this season which is shaping up to be a cracker. Neymar, Mbappe, Messi, Ronaldo, Salah, KDB, Hazard could all win domestic doubles, so UCL will be the determinant of if the Ronaldo-Messi era has truly ended or if this is just a blip on the radar.

It was only with the performance of the last 4 years that made many people agree CR7 is as great as Messi.

Maybe you're living in an alternate universe. CR7 had many fans then, it's just the media were all over Messi for obvious reasons. He was the star man of a perfect Barcelona team with a perfect coach with a perfect football style. It was a match made in heaven.

Ronaldo was almost always on the podium with Messi, and the last 5 years have simply been a reversal of fortunes. CR7 the star man of a Real Madrid team that could win almost simply by will power alone with a legendary coach and slick, attractive always-attack football style.

CR7 didn't just become the most followed footballer on social media in the last 4 or 5 years. It's always been the case. He has always had more fans than Messi. Messi just had a period where as you said the arguments that he was better appeared more convincing, and so his fans were more vocal.

What CR7 did between 2003 and 2008 at Man U won him lots of fans while Messi was still an understudy of Ronaldinho. From 2008-2012, nothing Ronaldo did mattered. He could have walked on air and the media would still be all over Messi because of his and Barca's achievements then.

Abi is this one of the usual one rule for Ronaldo and another for every other person. It's an award ceremony, there's no rule of etiquette that demands he shows up. The UEFA Best Women Player didn't come for her award.

Messi should also have at least showed up. After all Ronaldo showed up to virtually all the awards Messi won.

Ronaldo voted for Modric and Varane, Messi voted for Modric and Cristiano. Not showing up takes nothing away from Modric's achievement or their respect for him. Stop making mountains out of molehills.

Also nice they flipped the formation to accommodate Messi and Ronaldo in their current preferred playing positions. They ruined it tho' with all their fails. While I do agree Modric would be a worthy winner of The FIFA's Best award, I'm not so sold on Varane being the best defender. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is not good. On the other hand, I rate him as a top CB. I just feel his performances were not spectacular enough. He was always second behind Ramos and he wasn't heads and shoulders above Umtiti in France's World Cup winning campaign. I daresay he wouldn't make the Top 5 if we were to look at best performers for Real and France respectively.

He was solid though and a place in the FifPro XI would be well merited.

It's accumulation mate. He was great for Real's successful UCL campaign, and was great for France's successful WC campaign. Ramos had a bad WC. Umtiti had a bad UCL.

It's just my viewpoint anyway.
