Miremoses1: marcelo also messed up real good last night, how can a defender leave such amount of space. His position was the main passage for Sevilla to attack. Shhh! It's as if you've forgotten Marcelo can't be criticized on this thread. That said, it's all about his offensive output these days. It wouldn't be funny when we face any team with world class wingers this season. It's be Bayern 2.0. Hopefully Odriozola's knock gets sorted out before the derby, else it'd be a rout. -Lord |

tesppidd: You people should stop insulting your fellow Nigerians and people around you just because they insulted Ronaldo or Messi.
It makes no sense. If anybody is to make that statement, it shouldn't be you. Haba, fear God! The funny thing is that apparently Barcelona offered Ronaldo more money and Ferguson wanted Ronaldo to go to Barcelona instead of RM; but Ronaldo insisted because he gave President Calderon his word. Source - https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2748827-milan-manchester-barcelona-how-kaka-won-the-2007-ballon-dor-ahead-of-ronaldoEarly in 2007, Real Madrid began courting Ronaldo in earnest. They were knocking on an open door. In March 2007, Ronaldo made clear his feelings: "Everyone knows that I love Spain. I'd like to play there one day. However, I'm happy at Manchester United. If I don't leave now, if I leave in two, three, four or five years, I'd be happy." It was only a matter of time.
"Ronaldo's determination to come here [surprised me]," says Ramon Calderon, who was Real Madrid president when the Portuguese joined the club in 2009. "I remember we got an agreement with Ronaldo in Manchester. Finally in 2008, Ferguson, who doesn't like Real Madrid very much—I don't know why, but he has an obsession with Real Madrid—he said, 'OK. You're leaving, but you go to Barcelona.'
"And Ronaldo said 'No'. He said: 'You don't understand. I gave my word to President Calderon. I'm going to go to Real Madrid.' Of course Barcelona wasn't very happy about that. I'm not sure about the money, but I think they offered him a bit more. Ronaldo said, 'No. My idea is to go to Real Madrid.'
"He was clear. He was very determined. That has to be said in his favour—that he kept his word even though he could have said, 'OK. I'm going to Barcelona, where I'll get more money.' He didn't. It's something very good about his personality." Maybe in an alternate universe Ronaldo and Messi fans aren't at each other's throat. -Lord |

okenwaa: You know football is quite different from the entertainment industry cus many things can make a musician or an actor not to show up...e.g having a performance or being on tour and shooting movie....let's leave this story for another day.
What do you think of FIFA making it known to award winners that they'll be winning cus thought it was supposed to come as a surprise?
And lastly,I think this shows that Sneijder was robbed in 2010 cus his feats surpassed that of Modric's and still the award was given to Messi. It never comes as a surprise. Award winners are told ahead of time every time in nearly all facets of modern civilization. Remember your class valedictorian, s/he was told ahead of time to prepare a speech. A lot of people have been robbed over the years. Like it's a long list stretching to before the start of the CR7-LM10 era. I'm just glad Modric didn't join the list. Because if CR7 had won, the complaints would have continued for two weeks at most then it'd die down. Everyone will move on. He deserved it, he got it, case closed. Unto this season which is shaping up to be a cracker. Neymar, Mbappe, Messi, Ronaldo, Salah, KDB, Hazard could all win domestic doubles, so UCL will be the determinant of if the Ronaldo-Messi era has truly ended or if this is just a blip on the radar. Modric will not even be in the top 3 next year. That's why it's important he won this year. It's like Kaka winning in 2007. -Lord |

Makes them look like sore losers. I'm not surprised though cus it's not about them.
Both are selfish and self centered. Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal. But I understand why others would see it that way. Contenders don't show up all the time for award galas in the entertainment industry, no one gives a sh*t and those are not even as competitive as football. It's about Modric not Messi or Ronaldo. -Lord |

Jarus: Many neutrals believed Messi was far greater then. And Messi fans were more convincing in their arguments then. In fact, aside Man U and Madrid fans, CR7 didn't have much fans then.
It was only with the performance of the last 4 years that made many people agree CR7 is as great as Messi. Maybe you're living in an alternate universe. CR7 had many fans then, it's just the media were all over Messi for obvious reasons. He was the star man of a perfect Barcelona team with a perfect coach with a perfect football style. It was a match made in heaven. Ronaldo was almost always on the podium with Messi, and the last 5 years have simply been a reversal of fortunes. CR7 the star man of a Real Madrid team that could win almost simply by will power alone with a legendary coach and slick, attractive always-attack football style. CR7 didn't just become the most followed footballer on social media in the last 4 or 5 years. It's always been the case. He has always had more fans than Messi. Messi just had a period where as you said the arguments that he was better appeared more convincing, and so his fans were more vocal. What CR7 did between 2003 and 2008 at Man U won him lots of fans while Messi was still an understudy of Ronaldinho. From 2008-2012, nothing Ronaldo did mattered. He could have walked on air and the media would still be all over Messi because of his and Barca's achievements then. -Lord |

donbenie: Messi was NOT nominated for the Best Player Award, therefore his not showing up is much more excusable than Ronaldo not showing up and should not be dragged into a conversation on why Ronaldo didn't show up.. Super Story! Last year when Messi was nominated and didn't show up because Ronaldo won it, did this your useless logic apply? Abi is this one of the usual one rule for Ronaldo and another for every other person. It's an award ceremony, there's no rule of etiquette that demands he shows up. The UEFA Best Women Player didn't come for her award. It's Modric's day, don't taint it with some irrelevant BS! -Lord |

Ronaldo should have at least showed up Messi should also have at least showed up. After all Ronaldo showed up to virtually all the awards Messi won. Ronaldo voted for Modric and Varane, Messi voted for Modric and Cristiano. Not showing up takes nothing away from Modric's achievement or their respect for him. jpmoriarti: For modric's mind, he's now as good as Messi or Ronaldo! Iffa hia! I like the way none of them attended that shit of award ceremony. This year is the celebration of mediocrity. Thank God Messi took no part in that scam. Let a new person win it na. 5 each, plus LM10 deserved it. It's his one and only chance to win it. Considering Iniesta and Sneijder at some point deserved it and didn't win; it is commendable that Modric won it. Also nice they flipped the formation to accommodate Messi and Ronaldo in their current preferred playing positions. They ruined it tho' with all their fails. How is DDG in the FIFPro when Navas is there? They had to give Salah a Puskas with that? Coutinho scores better curlers. Ronaldo's and Bale's overhead kicks. Anyhow, congrats to all the winners, especially my man Modric and bae (and female GOAT) Marta. -Lord |

pkasso: While I do agree Modric would be a worthy winner of The FIFA's Best award, I'm not so sold on Varane being the best defender. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is not good. On the other hand, I rate him as a top CB. I just feel his performances were not spectacular enough. He was always second behind Ramos and he wasn't heads and shoulders above Umtiti in France's World Cup winning campaign. I daresay he wouldn't make the Top 5 if we were to look at best performers for Real and France respectively.
He was solid though and a place in the FifPro XI would be well merited. It's accumulation mate. He was great for Real's successful UCL campaign, and was great for France's successful WC campaign. Ramos had a bad WC. Umtiti had a bad UCL. It's just my viewpoint anyway. -Lord |
