Tonykjngs:
Spain said on Thursday, that it recorded 950 people dying in last 24 hours, the highest number of deaths of any country in one day.

This was before France released a death record of 1,355 that eclipsed it.

Italy’s deaths of 919 people on March 27, was formerly the highest in the world in a single day.

The number of confirmed Spanish cases rose from 102,136 on Wednesday to 110,238 – an 8% rise that is similar to the rate recorded in previous days, BBC reports.

Authorities believe the virus is now peaking and say they expect to see a drop in figures in the days ahead.

“We continue with an increase of around 8%. This points, as we have already seen, to a stabilisation in the data that we’re registering,” María José Sierra, from the Spanish health ministry’s emergency co-ordination unit, said at a news conference.

Spain, the second-worst hit nation in terms of deaths, has also lost nearly 900,000 jobs.

The US on Thursday said it saw a record 6.6 million new unemployment benefit claims.

NzeNaOgbunike:
The Painful Ordeal Of 57 Suspected Gay Men Arrested At Birthday Party In Egbeda Lagos Nigeria
A human rights group, The Initiative for
Equal Rights has called for the dismissal of criminal case against 57 men arrested by the Lagos State Police Command at a birthday party in Egbeda area of Lagos, a year ago with lack of evidence.
The suspects were arrested for allegedly being initiated into a homosexual club at a hotel on 26th of August, 2018 but no single charge has been brought against them, and no evidence has been brought forward despite five court appearances.
The civil right group called for the dismissal of the case at a press conference held for the young men to tell their side of the story and what they have been going through after the Nigerian Police paraded them in front of the media.
The Group Executive Director, Miss Xeenarh Mohammed, while addressing journalists said for one year, the 57 men had been branded as criminals, incurring travel, and legal costs, while the police, with support from the magistrate, had given excuses why they had not been charged or acquitted.
In her words, “We got in touch with them and they don’t have legal representatives, and I think that’s also the part of the problems that happen in Nigeria. If you are from a lower class where you don’t have money, where you cannot buy justice, you are left to rot in jail without help from anyone.
“Some of the boys are here so they can talk about what they have been through since they were arrested and there are many people in Police stations, in Kirikiri who are suffering worse cases than them because they have nobody to stand up for them.”
Mohammed called for the case to be dismissed for lack of evidence, and asked the Nigerian Police to tender an apology to the boys for the brutality and maltreatment they received while in detainment.
“We hope you are here today to help us call for justice that these boys should be acquitted, they should get the apology that the constitution has guaranteed them and also their freedom,” she said.
The lawyer and lead counsel to the suspects, Oludare Falana, sid the police had failed to file any case against the suspects up till date.
According to him, the suspects were detained under Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws of Lagos State pending the outcome of the police’s investigation, adding that the magistrate granted the boys bail and that they were left off the hook at least, temporary.
“It’s been one year exactly, and I can tell you that as at the last time we were in court, not a single charge has been filed against them. I was in court the last adjournment and I tried to move the magistrate to strike out the case because there is no case before the court because there is no charge but in her wisdom, she said she is going to adjourn again.”
Citing the Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, Falana said the suspects had the right to assemble and freedom of association.
“If the constitution has guaranteed their freedom of association, freedom to assemble together, that fundamentally guaranteed freedom cannot be taken away by anybody. Anybody can gather, that’s what the constitution says and from the charge that I saw, it was not signed the Police and they said they were engaged in cultism and later they said it was unlawful sexual relationship.
“If you are going to charge people to court, you must give us the proof of evidence, the proof of evidence is everything you were able to gather during the cause of your investigation which informs your decision to charge them to court.
“For now, every other thing as it stands today is in the realm of speculation. These boys have been shown to the whole world as homosexuals, as criminals and all that and at the end of the day, if a state cannot prefer a charge against them in one year, it tells a lot about what has gone wrong in their investigation.
“Secondly, how are you going to make up for these stigmatization? Are you going to take them back on air and say you are sorry, these boys are not who we thought they were and therefore we apologize? Are you going to put it in the newspapers? How do you ameliorate their pains in terms of recreating the wrong impressions you have given the whole world?
“Till date, the Police have not been able to come up with anything and that tells us the extent of injustice in our system. I am aware that this will not happen in any clime except Nigeria. And I do not know why our government is not taking things like these seriously,” he stated.
Falana lamented that the police were quick to arraign people and do media trial but that when it comes to the issue of substantiating the allegation against them, “suddenly they just go numb, and then they will be foot-dragging and eventually the case will fizzle out.”
“But what happen to these boys? They are Nigerians, this story had gone viral even international. These boys are lucky they have a voice, what about others who don’t have anyone to speak for them? They die in pain?” He asked.
Some of the 57 men arrested, who were present narrated their ordeals.
Forget all that shit.if you really care for the boys, raise money as a human rights group, get them lawyers, then sue the living hell out of the police force for damages.you know the case is good and you shall get your money back with interest.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

UNITED STATES SUSPENSION OF THE ISSUANCE OF IMMIGRANT VISAS TO NIGERIANS

On 31st January 2020, the United States (U.S) Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced temporary travel restrictions on six (6) countries including Nigeria.

For Nigeria, the restriction is the suspension of the issuance of “immigrant visas” to Nigerian passport holders only. This suspension shall come into effect on 21st February 2020. The suspension does not apply to other U.S visas such as those for official, business, tourism and student travel.

The DHS states the suspension of “immigrant visas” became necessary following a review and update of the methodology (performance metrics) adopted by the U.S Government to assess compliance of certain security criteria by foreign governments. This resulted in certain enhancements on how information is shared between Nigeria and the U.S.

Nigeria remains committed to maintaining productive relations with the United States and its international allies especially on matters of global security. Accordingly, President Muhammadu Buhari has established a committee, to be chaired by the Hon. Minister of Interior, to study and address the updated U.S. requirements. The committee will work with the U.S Government, INTERPOL and other stakeholders to ensure all updates are properly implemented.

This is shameful and disgraceful to know that a country like Nigeria with all its blessings even with the evil of corruption and terrorism can cry over US travel ban.this issue has nothing to do with the average Nigeria who goes about his normal surviving activities.it affects the high and mighty who want their children and grand children to have the US green card.they are only trying to make it look like a national crisis when it is not.to me it is domestic crisis for the high and mighty and a blessing to the common Nigeria.let them stay here and invest the stolen loot of their fathers and mothers.the more they send their kids out to the US,the more they worsen the situation of the country.let their children stay and suffer from any plan they have for this nation.I wish Britain and all other countries will apply the same measure,it will bring peace, progress and eliminate poverty for good.

Kwanza:
The Imo State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Raji Ibrahim has narrated how Imo North Action Alliance senatorial district candidate, Ndubuisi Emenike, was killed.

The late Emenike was allegedly shot dead by one Sydney Ogudoro, an Assistant Superintendent of the Corps.

The commandant, who sympathized with the people of the state and Nigerians at large over the sudden death, pacified the people and assured them that the corps would not leave any stone unturned in the investigation of the matter.

Assuring the people that Civil Defence Corps and other sister security agencies would investigate the matter thoroughly, Ibrahim described the suspect, Sydney Ogudoro, as one of the most tactical officers of the command.

“We don’t want to believe that it was an accidental discharge because, in the Civil Defence Corps, we don’t believe in accidental discharge, this is because the suspect is one of our senior officers,” he added.

The PUNCH gathered that the suspect who was not directly attached to the deceased had allegedly shot him at a party recently organised in the state.

Ibrahim said, "The shooting of the deceased was not intentional as people had it. He had already released a shot in the air to scare people but on coming down with the riffle, somebody from crowd mistakenly hit him at the shoulder and the bullet pulled out."

He prayed for the repose of Emenike’s soul just as he implored God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the great loss.

He said, “When I got wind of the incident at Isiala Mbano, I called the Commandant General, who quickly ordered that the suspect should be arrested. As I speak, he was immediately arrested and detained in the police cell”.

He also said that the full weight of the law would prevail adding that the corps had issued the suspect a query, through in detention.

“All security agencies will align with the Police and Corps to give a thorough investigation on the immediate and remote causes of the shooting of the deceased,” he added.

Aso Villa Officials Stop Court Bailiff From Serving Buhari’s Daughter Over SIM Card Case | Sahara Reporter

Officials working at the Aso Villa on Friday declined to receive court processes on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hanan, from Bailiff of the Federal High Court.

SaharaReporters had reported how Anthony Okolie, a young businessman, who lawfully purchased an MTN SIM card was illegally arrested and detained by the Department of State Services for 10 weeks because the SIM was once used by Hanan.

Okolie, whose arrest and detention at the DSS facility was masterminded by Hanan, had since dragged the DSS, MTN and the young lady before the Federal High Court in suit number: FHC/ASB/CS/3/2020 demanding N500m compensation and public apology for the violation of his human rights.

Okolie's lawyer and National President of Revolutionary Lawyer's Forum, Mr Tope Akinyode, made the disclosure today.

He said, “Aso Villa officials have declined to accept court processes on behalf of Hanan Buhari today.

“They told the court Bailiff that they are working for the President and not the President's daughter.

“We are not surprised by this loser antics, but it is an inglorious display of inconsistency that the same Hanan Buhari who misused presidential privileges to fly a Presidential jet, now finds it hard to accept court processes at the villa.

I am with them in a pharmacy getting their wounds treated. There is a nagging question I want answers to as I watch these beautiful harmless girls:

Why are Africans vehemently opposed towards these kind of people and LGBTQ people in general? Is religion or culture the reason? What is wrong in loving a person of the same sex? Is it the greatest of evil? Is evil categorized? I need answers to these questions in order to know what decision to make on these girls...

Earlier yesterday @Truthfully83 shared a personal experience on his visit (along with a law practitioner friend) to 3 prisons in Nigeria.

In his words, you'll weep for this nation, at the sight of inmates. Many of whom are innocent.

From sources unknown, NPS currently has 75,489 prisoners out of which 24,450 are convicted while 51,139 of them are awaiting trial.

Could this be true? Or a mere exaggeration? He went further to say in one prison, 645 prisoners are sharing 2 toilets. How inhumane. Why then did they change the name from prison to correctional facilityhuh
The Nigerian judiciary system is part of the cause of such national disgrace.we say we are practicing the British type of legal system yet their prisons is not as congested as ours.a case goes to court and before you say "jack", the judge will adjourn the case to 3 weeks or 6 weeks sometimes to months.the judges are too lazy to take enough cases to justify the jumbo pay.imagine a case of theft lasting for as long as one year.if judges apply some seriousness and strict attitude to the start and prompt finishing of cases it will help decongest the prisons.the prisons is not the only problem because they give them food no matter how terrible the food may be.the major problem is the police station where you have the most inhumane form of detaining the guilty and the innocent without food.our police stations bring the biggest disgrace to us on the international level.also our journalist are the most useless the world has seen.they stay in country and journalist from other countries, come in,investigate issues and report to the public.the only thing our journalist know how to do is to follow politicians behind like flies and report irrelevant cases.if the journalist in this country were exposing such police cells and prison cells,it would have helped a lot.The Nigerian journalist do their own investigation at cyber cafes where they source for stories.shame.they are not adventurous using mini undetected cameras like their counterparts in other countries.I can bet you that the journalist that got this pics is not Nigerian.journalism is the civil societies greatest weapon against inhumane acts.In 80s and 70s,journalist were hard working but now they just wash the ass of our politicians.

It was a sad experience for some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after they were involved in an accident on Monday.

Thousands of PDP faithful had occupied the streets of Abuja and some major cities in the country in what they described as the ‘mother of all protests’.

The protest was against the judgement of the Supreme Court delivered on Tuesday last week in which the court sacked the PDP governorship candidate in Imo State and declared Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the winner of the March 9 poll.

While the protest went smoothly in some cities, it was a sad event for some PDP faithful in the nation’s capital as two trucks conveying protesters collided.

One of the trucks was stationed at the junction of a major road while the other which was approaching lost control in apparent stunt and collided with the first vehicle.

A number of protesters are feared to have sustained various degrees of injury while it has yet to be ascertained if anybody died in the incident.

I urge the Nigerian Government (State and/or Federal) to release Mr. Glorious David-West to me. There is something that guy confessed that it seems none of you, including crime experts/criminologists have taken into serious consideration. Please, release that guy to me and let me carry out "experiments" to try and rehabilitate him. Honestly, I feel pity for that guy because he is INNOCENT of those homicidal crimes even though he is guilty in the legal sense. I know you may never understand.

I await the Government's response to my appeal. I remain Mallam Obebinaru F. Obhuo. May Almighty Allah bless you.
