Xbee007:That's a pity. I thought the acquisition was excellent, for the following reasons: 1) the m346 is an excellent LIFT aircraft, allowing both trainer and light attack roles; 2) it's a worthy replacement for both F7 and Alpha, which will have to be replaced at some point; 3) most important, it would have simplified logistics as with phased withdrawals of F7 and Alpha, NAF would've been left with this structure: ---a) basic flight-> Mushshak ---b) intermediate-> M346 ---c) final-> JF17. |
kabe1:We have such rough seas down here even a IPV has to be over 60m or it won't fare very well. OPVs will be more than 80m. Our current OPVs - converted Israeli missile craft - were acquired when no one else would sell due to sanctions, and will be withdrawn from service. Sailors will be pleased cos the design suited the Mediterranean and they had terrible sea-keeping. That's why I envy navies working in calmer waters cos they can buy lots of smaller vessels. Personal opinion: I suspect the Sea Axe design is the way of the future for IPVs and OPVs. |
kabe1:To add: IPVs in SA Navy classification, built in SA, with a concurrent build of an replacement for SAS Protea, the hydrographic vessel, also done locally. |
The idiotic nonsense on here. 1) F7 is an upgraded Mig-21, which can carry 250kg-500kg dumb bombs. 2) RAAD 1 is the Pakistani designation for the DENEL MUPSOW, currently qualified for the Mirage and JF17. 3) RAAD 2 is the extended range version, recently integrated on the Mirage and JF17, a single test firing, and not yet in production. But what use are facts when chest-puffing means bending reality to whatever fantasies I wake up with? |
mekussa:I'd love to know how a 250-500kg dumb bomb carried on an upgraded Mig-21 platform that NAF has had for years suddenly became a nuclear or cruise missile, carried on a platform NAF received days later and has yet to officially commission. My mate at Denel said NAF aren't idiots, maybe he meant they're geniuses who can bend time and the laws of physics. |
RAAD 1 was the Pakistani version of the Denel MUPSOW. Denel helped the Pakistanis integrate it onto the Mirage, due to South Africa having developed the weapon for that aircraft. RAAD 2 has extended the range, and been integrated onto the JF17. According to a Denel acquaintance, "Pakistan has only done 1 test firing of the Raad2 on the Thunder, and has yet to qualify the weapon on this particular platform. The NAF aren't idiots, and would not buy a weapon that's not yet qualified by the manufacturer." Make of that what you will. |
The fantasists now infest all military/defence threads on this forum! |
Odunayaw:The fan girls here think that's the only and main thing SF is for...sadly. |

SA Navy training with SAAF while a Helix ISR has a look, Cape Town, 16 March 2021.
|
Odunayaw:Thanks for that. So NAF making the most of less than ideal joined/interoperability capabilities? |
Odunayaw:I can understand HVTs. 81mm/120mm mortars; 90mm guns, rockets etc should suffice for the rickety structures I've seen in videos. Cheaper too. |
A simple question: all the ATAKA missiles, on what will they be used? Surely not on BH Toyotas and motorcycles? Isn't it more cost effective to use guided and unguided rockets? |
Odunayaw:The B version is finishing school for the guys who've gone past the LIFT phase. If the M346 purchase is confirmed, here's the logical progression as I see it: 1) basics in Pakistani Mush; 2) intermediary/advanced in other props like King Air; 3) intro to jets/ mid- aviation in LIFT M346; 4) final / ace in JF17. But as I said, my logic is based on SAAF, and NAF might think differently. |
Raaven:The Soviets trained a whole bunch of countries which don't do the same thing? And other Arab countries not trained by the Soviets? For example, the Saudis are trained by the Americans, yet they still put on such shows. The Moroccans, ditto. |
Odunayaw:The various acquisitions make sense to me. The M346 is a Lead in Flight Trainer/ Light Attack. Your pilots need to transition from your Pakistani basic trainers to jet aircraft. If NAF is smart, a squadron will be made available as CAS support, and the rest to train future JF17 pilots. Then again, I might be projecting: we in SA use our Hawk LIFT as a precursor to the Gripen. Hell, our Hawk cockpits have been Gripenised to ease the transition. |
Sizzorkay:One vehicle chasing after the terrs; no back-up. 1 vehicle with comms as I already mentioned. No personnel placed at possible escape routes for the enemy; meaning no situational awareness after contact; and so on and so forth. All of this has nothing to do with the abilities of the troops on the ground. But it all starts with the lack of comms on the ground. In this very thread, go back and look at the very many pics of NA vehicles without any comms antennas, and ask yourself how they conduct ops without the most basic logistics component. |
Only positive I took from the video is that one of the NA vehicles had comms. Not to be negative but all the ammo and pointy things in the world don't mean shite if logistics isn't in place. |
Raaven:Why do elite units mostly in the Arab world like these sort of shows? |
kikuyu1:Don't know about Kenya or Naija, but we Saffas have no current need for a destroyer. We are in desperate need however, for 12 x 80m or more OPVs: this would mean a pair always on patrol on both our Atlantic and Indian Ocean areas. 4 on ops/ 4 in maintenance / 4 for training. 2 SA-origin Yanks have commanded Burke class destroyers. One of whom actually exercised with one of our frigates off Spain. I personally don't set much store by such things: these people are Americans, Brits etc, and for us to claim them is disingenuous. I get a lot of flak from Saffas who claim Elon Musk. |
Ddream6627:IDF or ex-IDF private contractors? |
BabaOwen:Is it legal in Nigeria to publish people's bank details? I've also noticed your police parading suspects they've arrested before the media, before they've appeared in court. Here in SA both these things are illegal. |
UAE orders more drones from Denel Dynamics! Defenceweb - 03 March 2021 UAE orders Seeker 400 UAVs for its Presidential Guard The order was announced by Staff Brigadier-General Mohammed Al Hassani, Official Spokesperson of the IDEX and NAVDEX exhibitions, on the first day of the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi on 21 February. “The UAE Armed Forces confirmed deals with Denel SOC, trading as Denel Dynamics, to provide an unmanned drone system, Seeker 400 UAE, to the Presidential Guard Command with a value of AED 50 000 000 [R204 million),” he said. The UAE is a repeat customer for the Seeker 400, having most recently ordered AED25 821 190 (R105 million) worth of Seeker 400s in March 2020. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s Arms Transfers database, the UAE bought several batches of Seeker II aircraft in the 1990s and 2000s, Seeker 200s in 2017 and six Seeker 400 armed UAVs in 2018. The Seeker 400 has up to 16 hours’ endurance and can carry two sensor payloads (weighing a combined 100 kg) at the same time, or guided weapons.

Sizzorkay:Yep, 60 Minutes was first to air the whole thing. Russia Today used their footage. I do believe the Iranians sent an indirect warning to the US. They downloaded satellite images of the base from a commercial provider, knowing full well the US would know. They moved their missiles into position in broad daylight, again knowing Uncle Sam would be watching. |

Paramount Matador in Azerbaijan. The vehicle hit a landmine and everyone escaped unscathed.

Raaven:If one applies the usual principle which any decent Air Force applies - out of every 3 aircraft: 1 operational, 1 for training/reserve, 1 in maintenance - that means 24/48 Su30 MKA available to fly. More than our entire fleet of Gripen! Fangirls who only look at quantity point to Egypt; they completely disregard the logistic genius of Algerian acquisitions. |
