kabe1:Not combat patrol. Escort for the MONUSCO commander on a visit to a Company Operating Base. |
bidexiii:From a non-Nigerian perspective, the NAF is to be congratulated for this. Here's hoping this is one of many medium choppers the NAF acquires because the war you're fighting requires a lot more of these. |
Where do Sahel terrorists get their heavy weapons? With arms flows from Libya declining, military barracks and poorly controlled national stockpiles are being targeted. https://issafrica.org/iss-today/where-do-sahel-terrorists-get-their-heavy-weapons |
Raaven:South African avionics when you need them most in a bird! ![]() |
Odunayaw:Reminds me of someone who once said, "the tiger doesn't go around shouting and reminding others of its tigretude", or something like that. |
Xbee007:When you fight a losing war with guys in scandals and your drone gets downed; you send a fighter plane to bomb the wreckage and you miss; perhaps gross incompetence is too mild a term. |
Raaven:Saudi incompetence knows no bounds! |
fachfouch:A month or 2 ago I said Tunisia -based on what my Turkish friends in the industry were saying - and you still mentioned the rejected Cobras. A Turkish banker friend says his bank worked on the financing and the client is Tunisia. |
Raaven:RIP to the pilots |
Raaven:Nigeria and all of Ecowas supported Morocco's re-admission. As far as I know, Algeria, Mauritania and all the southern African countries minus Swaziland, voted against. |
Raaven:Chkil, I'm hearing one of your Agusta choppers went down. Is it true? |
Raaven:With the exception of Algeria and South Africa, all the big regional African countries betrayed the Sahrawi people by voting Morocco back in to the AU. |
LTGEN:Old news. Plus, big doesn't mean anything. If it did, DRC would be a big deal. |
GreenandGold:That's true. They lost a few of the Jordan-supplied Paramount Mbombe 6 because even though they were configured as APCs, they were fighting them as ICVs. |
Throwback...

Raaven:You guys have the optimal force design. Light, medium, heavy and attack. Same goes for the naval side: light, medium, heavy, anti-ship, anti-submarine. |
What types of military helicopters are in service with various African countries? Just so we're all clear what I'm talking about, I'll start with South Africa: 1) Maritime Helicopter - Super Lynx Mk.300 2) Attack Helicopter - Rooivalk 3) Medium Transport - Oryx 4) Light Utility - A109 LUH 5) Light Utility/Transport - BK117 PICS: all 5 types in service with the SAAF

Lurker4Long:South Africa sells several planeloads of military equipment to Turkey, potentially flouting Covid-19 lockdown rules On Thursday an A400M military transport plane, carrying a donation of medical supplies arrived in Cape Town. A second arrived later that day while a third and fourth aircraft on Saturday. At least one more aircraft is expected in the next day or two to pick up what Turkish ambassador Elif Ülgen explained was “some kind of military ammunition” purchased from Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM). Only the first arrived with medical supplies on board. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2020-05-02-south-africa-sells-several-planeloads-of-military-equipment-to-turkey-potentially-flouting-covid-19-lockdown-rules/?fbclid=IwAR0vHwXbEDkpPqm0PbVuE5lqIUpvrpSEdiDm3o7oJ-Qrhp0nEp-5YRvgDTg

youghs: Some source would say it can withstand 14kg under hull, 21 kg under wheel and weighs 10 tonI suspect you're confusing the Marauder with the Matador. Other sources say 8kg under hull weighs 17 ton. What exactly is the specificationThe manufacturer says 8kg under hull and under any wheel. Curb mass according to Paramount is 9,900kg and combat mass is 15,000kg. |
First Jordan illegally transfers Paramount products to Libya, now the UAE. I'm also convinced those multiple flights by Turkish A400 planes out of SA during April were illegally sent to Libya. G5 howitzers seen in Libya It appears the Libyan National Army (LNA) is now operating South African-made G5 155 mm howitzers, mostly likely delivered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). What appear to be Denel Land Systems G5 towed howitzers were seen in a video released on 14 November by the Libyan National Army, which controls eastern Libya. The UAE acquired G5 and self-propelled G6 howitzers from South Africa and is the most likely supplier of the weapons to Libya – it has supplied LNA forces with other equipment. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/g5-howitzers-spotted-in-libya/

It seems Paramount is on a roll! South African armoured vehicles spotted in Mozambique Moz 24 Horas reported that five Marauders arrived in November to reinforce landward operations against Islamist insurgents in the north of the country. The 17 tonne Marauder, manufactured by Paramount Group, can accommodate up to 12 personnel including two crew, and offers STANAG Level 3 protection. Its hull can withstand a direct explosion of 8 kg of TNT. Other sub-Saharan African operators include the Republic of Congo and Malawi. Elsewhere, Paramount has sold Marauders to Mali, Nigeria, Kazakhstan (as the Arlan) and Singapore (as the Belrex). https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/south-african-armoured-vehicles-spotted-in-mozambique/ |
The Nigerian Air Force chose well. Paramount’s Marauder and Matador vehicles battle proven in Azerbaijan Matador and Marauder vehicles in service with Azerbaijan have been battle proven in the conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The September/October edition of Azeri Defence magazine reported that the vehicles demonstrated good performance during the five-day war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in April 2016, in an explosion at an ammunition depot in Gilazi, Azerbaijan, in 2017, as well as during Azeri military operations launched on 27 September 2020 as part of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The magazine cites several examples of the vehicles performing well under recent combat conditions, including a video showing a Marauder detonating two anti-tank mines under the wheels of the vehicle. Despite the large explosion, the personnel escaped unharmed. https://www.defenceweb.co.za/land/land-land/paramounts-marauder-and-matador-vehicles-battle-proven-in-azerbaijan/

An EW system produced in the country that only does armoured vehicles, according to some here. "In March 2018, Egypt used the South African GSY2210 electronic warfare system(made by GEW Technologies) in the Sinai Peninsula in the fight against ISIS. The effect of this system reached some parts of Israel and a lot of people could not use their phones which prompted the Israeli authorities to contact the Egyptian Military."

jln115:Back when sane discussions could still be had on this thread, I think it was Frumentius who used to say, "Dogs bark, whilst the caravan moves on." |
You do not control what you do not patrol. Nigeria’s super camps leave civilians exposed to terrorists Boko Haram has moved in to control spaces vacated by the military in north-east Nigeria. Last year, the Nigerian military started pulling soldiers out of villages, small unit formations and bases into bigger, stronger and better equipped camps. This ‘super camp strategy’ sought to bolster the military’s combat posture and enhance its resistance to Boko Haram attacks on its bases. The approach has indeed improved the ability of the Nigerian military to counter Boko Haram, but it has also eroded the protection of civilians and their access to livelihoods.
