All these Nigerian banks talking of opening branches in Western countries. They are not opening retail banking branches. Their business is very limited and local oyinbo people DO NOT know about them. In UK for example only one Bank has successfully launched retail banking in decades: Metro Bank. And they are yet to make any profit after about 10 years. I was simply appalled by how little they are allowed to do locally in the West when I checked out GTB, FBN, etc. |
chinchong:Jonathan that built Almajiri schools to educate them in both Western and religious education, stop them being used as beggars by rigious zealots from childhood and give them a good shot at using their potential in a modern way, was hated by the same North and their Southern acolytes. At least the beggar is not being slaughtered in his own ancestral land like herdsmen do in the South and Middle Belt. Isn't it interesting that why Northerners have put their person in power yet again, OP is not asking what those Northern leaders who have ruled Nigeria over 40 years have done for their own people all these years. Instead he lambasts a free citizen because he is not giving his money to someone for political reasons. He will not question Tinubu who was insulting OBJ. Despite all his failures (God knows all our leaders have failed), he is a Yoruba elderly man and culture demands respect for him. |
[quote author=Mouthgag post=76199858]This is the most ignorant and stupid post ever![/qpuote] Killjoy. You are taking the fun out of this thread dude. We know say you sabi fan. But nobody will smile at your reply. We have heard various versions of how these names came about before. Unless you are not a Nairaland regular. ![]() |
234ng44uk:Ok Mr Muchsensical. ![]() |
Dandsome:I heard it is was previously the junction leading to Ipaja. I stand to be corrected. |
234ng44uk:Legend has it that Hausa traders have been there for ages. It supposedly came from that or something similar. |

Amarabae:Nigeria was much more united then than now. As a curious kid then, I remember seeing people rigging, thumbprinting and stuffing ballot box in 1983. But not on the scale of 2015 and 2019. Tribe plays a much bigger role now. The worst thing that happened to Nigeria after Biafra war was coup plot to remove Shagari. It destroyed our best chance to grow before end of cold war. We lost relevance to the West (their investment, companies dried up) once cold War ended. People who understand world politics will understand. Even South West people still complain that Jonathan gave key cabinet positions to Igbo people. We shouid not sugarcoat anything. We are now a very religiously and ethically polarised nation. Living in Abuja often blinds many Southerners to reality. |
Truth is bitter. She just said what is happening. And ladies are not different in cheating stuff either. I like those who say it as it is. Not cowardly hypocrites. We are all forming holy Holy. Yet despicable things are happening around us. So why not honestly discuss the way forward? With the merits and demerits of the ideas put forward. For example we prudely refuse to discuss sex education with the youth. So we have high teenage pregnancy rates, STIs, abortions, etc. |
Sure, we know her sucking priorities: different prick sizes and shapes. ![]() |
Well at least Desmond Elliot is not disappointing Donald Trump. ![]() |

vizkiz:At least the corruption part of their 9ja DNA will not become part of their phenotype when raised abroad. Thereby helping their birth countries continue to prosper. Yours raised on 9ja will just continue as 9ja is. A lot of what Nigerians use to refer to themselves as smart are frowned upon worldwide. |
Poo. Lies. |
senatepresido:It largely stemmed from the civil war or Biafra war of 1967 to 1970. During First Republic that began just before independence, Dr Azikiwe (an Igbo) of NCNC party teamed up with Sir Tafawa Balewa and Sir Ahmadu Bello of NPC to form the federal govt. Balewa became Prime Minister and Zik became Governor General (later President in 1963). AHMADU Bello remained Premier of the Northern Region. Even though Ahmadu Bello hated Igbo (see YouTube for his anti-Igbo views in a BBC interview) , Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Zik could not work together to form a minority Federal govt. Hinting that there was mutual suspicion between Zik and Awo, and their followers. In January 1966, a group of mostly Midwest/Bendel Igbo soldiers led by Kaduna Nzeogeu staged a coup that led to killing of Bello, Balewa, Akintola (premier of Western Region), Okotie-Eboh and some other non-igbo top politicians of that time. Long before the coup, Northerners of fed govt had framed up Awo of coup plotting and sentenced him for treason in a Calabar jail. After the failed coup of Nzeogwu, the next most senior soldier was General Ironsi. Surviving members of FEC had to give him power to handle the crisis in the land. So came the first military govt. But Northerners now felt Igbo planned the coup together all along. They began genocide of Igbo and minorities in the North. Igbo had long established in the North that even Zik was born in Niger State back in 1903 or 1904. Ojukwu was born in same Zungeru in Niger state in 1930s. Within 6 months of Ironsi taking power, Northern soldiers killed him alongside Fajuyi. With killings of Igbo in the North continuing unchecked, Ojukwu felt Igbo safety could not be guaranteed within Nigeria. He declared Biafra Republic after peace talks in Aburi (Ghana), failed. Biafra released Awo from Calabar prison. Igbo felt at this point that Yoruba wouid be sympathetic enough to their cause. To perhaps be neutral like Midwest (until Biafra invaded Midwest) or even declare Oodua Republic. Considering Awo's frame up and how the North used Akintola against Awo, splitting Awo's party Action Group. But instead Awo joined the new Head of State Gowon in FEC as vice chairman and Federal commissioner (minister) of Finance. Igbo people were made to understand that Awo proposed blocking food supply to starving civilians in Biafra that led to massive deaths and end of the war. At the end of the war, Awo is said to have given Igbo people only £10 no matter how big the money and assets they had in other parts of Nigeria before the war. This has led to Igbo seeing Yoruba as traitors. Even two generations down the line. You often hear Igbo call Yoruba people Afonja, to remember the Oyo soldier who betrayed Oyo empire to Fulani Jihadist Alimi that led to loss of Kwara/Illorin to Sokoto Caliphate. |
kollinskollins:Benin Republic you mean? If you mean Edo, you will be surprised despite poor govt performance since 1999. Excluding even Italy (money from there has dried up), Edo has about the third largest hard currency remittances per volume after Lagos and Oyo States. Per head, it receives the most foreign remittance. Always in top 5 in WAEC results, high literacy rate, a booming real estate sector. The people do not rely on govt allocation. Despite being a moderate oil producing State. Poor roads and amenities are a result of poor governance. |
Kikikikiki |
ednut1:I used to know of about four flights daily to Benin. Aero then too. But way to little for the volume of travellers. |
ednut1:How many planes ply that route? Capavity is way below demand. So just because one returns from abroad he must fly? Thousands of daily home-based travelers nko? Very soon anyone returning from abroad should fly to Ibadan, Ilorin, Lokoja, Abeokuta, Akure, Enugu, Imo, etc. I for one, I have little confidence in 9ja aviation system. Corruption will allow short-cuts in maintenence. Benin-Lagos Road is one the most important federal high ways in Nigeria and should be safe for all to use. |
OladimejiRufai:Are we not there already? When even customs officer can chase someone just returning from abroad from airport for refusing to pay 5k and shoot him dead? When dozens of people are murdered by terrorists and politicians are dancing to crowds in rallies? When mutilated bodies for ritual litter the land? Is it not empty RIP we just say and move on? Dude in fact we have been long immune to any shock over daily massacre o. |
Jaideyone:You are debating with yourself and reaching conclusions in the normal BMC mode. Funny that you do not even know what illiteracy means. Another example of failed education. So every project started must be completed before election? If not completed it automatically means abandoned? You BMC lot are learning from Liar Mohammed fast. But it's all very predictable and pathetic now. But the trademoni pain you well well. Na serious pain dey cause such an agbero reaction. Everything about APC and their goons is do or die. ![]() |
Jaideyone:Weldone King Solomon. Talk of education from the product of failed education system churning out half-baked graduates. ![]() Kikikikiki. ![]() 30k BMC Crew. |
geo4c:APC never planned to rule. They were warning up for parallel govt and sabotage of the nation. But GEJ surprised them by conceding. That is why after contesting election 4 times, it still took Buhari 6 months to form his cabinet. They have been stuck in the opposition Propaganda ever since. Aside projects already conceived or nearing completion under GEJ, nothing to show in almost 4 years. Trade moni is the best project they have come up with since. ![]() |
Leonardoreel:Problem is by the time people get the car story will change " the car too dey spoil, fuel too scarce/dear, LASTMA wahala too much. You might be different though. ![]() |
Speculation. YWNWA. |
yemaldo:Many. Running from Lagos to Kanu and also going through back of Amaechi's house in Port-Harcourt. A fact Amaechi later reluctantly admitted. |
Shibaraba:Na failed education cause am. If GEJ had not actively shown us that modern trains can actually work in Nigeria, not just MoU on paper, Buhari would never have come up with the idea. Indomie kids didn't witness his cancellation of Lagos metro. That was always an Albatross on his neck. The minimum he could do is continue on the Integrated National Railway link GEJ was already working on. |
martineverest:There are friends' or relatives' parties one cannot afford to miss. They will have probably attended yours already or would if you invite them. In the West most people are aware of the serious consequences of driving under the influence, including jail time. They avoid drinking & driving largely. Fact is at 3am, concentration is low and tiredness is much. A bad time to drive generally. RIP to the dead. |
dododawa1:The rich think of more investment. The Just About Managing (JAMs) spend money recklessly. |
MrThisandthat:Na Obama mess up there. Trump for nor allow that nonsense. Obama might be mixed race but he follows oyinbo agenda. Understands Africa only from CIA briefing like other US presidents until the skeptical (of institutions) Trump came. Obama probably believed Buhari had something to offer because his handlers said so, considering APC's well oiled propaganda machine. Which by the way included Sahara Reporter & Omoyele Sowore back then. |
