Why do you guys like disgracing yourselves publicly, the photo/image you posted clearly started it's a legend. Just incase you don't know the meaning of legend, see below.

Meaning of legend:

A traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated.
There's really something off with every single Bini person on this forum in recent times, you guys aren't bright at all.

I specifically liked how the caption read "legend has it" that is the blow in the caption because it implies that it is an important part of Bini "collective memory" culture

Do you tell this or do you not?
Simple as that. The answer is obviously yes - seeing as there is even a statue depicting it. so for you to try to play around one Yoruba legend as if you don't have legends of your own is foolish

Just Imagine the mindset. The anti Benin in some people on nairaland have actually shot down their reasoning capabilities. They so much enjoy fairytales. I usually smell them from afar, that is why I usually come down hard on them when I chooses to respond to them.

Many of them that know me, usually stay away when they see me in a thread. They now prefer to read quietly from the sidelines. Sometimes, they get carried away sneaked into a thread to give tacit support to TAO11 and quickly sneaked back out.

You now often see Benin related threads having thousands of views but the active participants will be less than 10 contributors, the majority read quietly.

These guys are not actually out for the purpose of learning but opportunities to bash Benin history.

This particular guy actually created another anti Benin thread in which he accused Benin of revisionism towards Yoruba and Igbo history, his intentions then was to create animosities between the Benin and Yoruba/Igbo alliance but the thread didn't fly because one of the Igbo guys that probably saw his nefarious intentions told him to let those that feel Benin are reversing their history fight for themselves, it died a natural death with just 3 posts, he then created this one.

Without Benin participation on this thread I doubt if it would have gone beyond 1 page.

Sometimes it's good to allow them enjoy their myths and fairytales.
You are just making noise

Deal with your people who tell fairytales like this

Ive told you time and time again, every language has different dialect of saying a particular thing. for instance Ogun means many things in yoruba, like Stab, Charm, gods etc, many things that don't relate, same way Igba also means many things in Ibo...

you havent told me how Oranmiyan captured Igodo all alone ( he wasn't with an entourage ) without a fight and renames it Ile'ibinu. pls do, I want to learn.

Lol...
I've told you guys times without number, languages has sub dialect and general dialect.
for example, during my time in Ado Ekiti, I heard another way they say good morning which I cant even type... its either Ikere tongue or the place where the Institute of health is situated.
also Benin only has more than 10 ways kf saying good morning
Ishan has more than 5 ways of saying good morning.
Okpameri has individual languages. the way makeke will say good morning differs from uneme.

Itshekiri and Yoruba might share common tongue on some words etc, that doesnt change the fact their ancestors were from Bini.
Also languages do intermix, example, the Ishan and Anioma has many languages in common, also the Benin and Ishan has too many things in common, I might say I'm from Bini and I'm correct.
During my time in Itshekiri, many people I know has families in Ondo, mostly riverine town bordering delta...

That is culture for you, its not fixed.
what is fixed in culture are mostly State Idols, Rituals and coronation ceremony.

The Bini also founded a portion of Lagos, which the Oba of lagos presides but there are no Bini speaking group in Lagos.
you get my point??
This is the second time you are saying this falsehood @bold.
What you are calling "more than 10 ways of saying good morning" are family salutations not dialectical variations or language mix.. Its the same language but each greeting has a different purpose.

You have Laiso, Lauhe, Lamogun, Lamehi etc

I've not had you guys time yet I would still use these family salutations to prove Benin traditions recognise several families as well as the Royal family to be of foreign origin (in this case Yoruba)

Go address the specifics of my claims about the origin of your Oduduwa. You haven't requested any permission to dabble into any Benin thread and start writing trash before now.

Was Oduduwa middle east origin first written by Fulani Sultan Bello in the early 1800s or not, some 80 years before Yoruba Samuel Johnson wrote the history of Yoruba in 1897. Didn't Samuel Johnson also traced the origin of your Oduduwa to the middle east?

Was Oduduwa being a native of Ife not written in 2010.
What is this one saying.

Sultan Bello never even mentioned oduduwa and even what he said has been trashed. The idea of attaching African groups to the middle east by Muslims is common... That is the first thing Islamic clerics set out to do either by intentional distortion for the sake of preaching Islam or them thinking they are genuinely discovering the people's history. Either way everyone had middle eastern origin as far as Muslims were concerned, it is now how to sell it to non-Muslims that is the issue. This attitude is present with Christians too.

The bases on which African Muslims who were in contact with Yorubas claimed the Yoruba were from the middle east revolves around Nimrod for some reason, maybe because the Nimrod mythology character was a hunter and Yorubas had a robust hunters gild undecided
As well as the existence of an Omani tribe called "Ya'aruba" who claim to descend from Ya'arab bin Kahtan, a name dropped by the sultan Bello as the ancestor of yorubas. These Ya'aruba were the rulers of the Omani empire that controlled parts of East Africa until the early 18th century so of course sultan Bello knew about them.

But this has no basis in Yorùbá traditional records and has been long trashed

Bariba were also said by the Muslims to be descendants of Kisra (A legendary figure based most likely on Khosrau II of Persia)
Hausa Kings - claimed descendants of Bayajida also said to be from Baghdad, Iraq
And so many more

So your justification is base on name similarities.....
there are only 2 details that make us know that João Afonso d'Aveiro was not making it up

1. He mentions a recognisable name
2. He describes the shape of one of the gifts (the brass Cross) which has been seen on Benin art depictions and Ife excavation

Every other thing is secondary compared to these two

So if I were you, I would do well to take name drops seriously

Benin name Oghene 'n' uhe (god of Ife people) for the Ooni of Ife only came into Benin lexicon after 1897 when Benin came into contact with Ife. There is no evidence that Benin had anything to do with Ife before 1897.
Lol grin
Culture › Re: Who Is The Ogane To The East Of Benin by macof(m):
samuk:
Firstly, you assume that Ogane is a corruption of Oghene.

Secondly, the location doesn't fit. Ogane is east whilst Ooni is west.

Thirdly, the travelling time from Benin to Ife couldn't have been almost 2 years.

Fourthly, the history of Oduduwa/Ife from where Ooni is derived started as a myth in the 1800s, some Yoruba historical accounts even says Oduduwa was a female deity. In early history of the Yoruba as told by the likes of Samuel Johnson, C. C. Law, Oduduwa is heavily conflicting. No evidence that he actually lived as human.

Fifthly, there are no concrete evidence that Benin/Ife relationship goes early than 1897.

Benin history of her relationship with Oduduwa, Oranmiyan and Ife are not in agreement with Yoruba claims.

Benin is claiming Oduduwa as a Benin prince, whilst Yoruba history is either claiming Oduduwa as a Saudi Arabia, Egyptian/middle eastern prince or recently as 2010 a native of Ife.
I assume "ogane" is oghene because we know that "ogane" is a Portuguese corruption of what they heard in Bini
So what ruler is known by a name similar to "ogane" - I can bet the only one you can mention is Oghene

You have a brain, you can deduce things by being logical, you don't have to be told everything word for word before you know what is what

So unless there's another ruler somewhere known by a name similar to "ogane" you have nothing to say samuk.

Oh, 20 months journey from Benin to the domain of Ogane too long to be Ife but you can entertain the idea that it is Igala? Even though Idah is closer to Benin city? Lol. Yoruba paranoia

The Ogane story told by the Benin ambassador to the European in 1485 could have been an allegory of the spiritual journey that every new Oba of Benin took.

The bible is filled with such allegories. The story of Job is one of such. I wouldn't be surprised if most Nigerians literally believe the story of job as an event that happened.
Whether it is allegory o, or a drunkards tale or actual facts

The best candidate for that name "ogane" and the relationship shared between ogane and the oba of Benin is the Ooni
Culture › Re: Who Is The Ogane To The East Of Benin by macof(m):
@samuk. @abohboy

Feell free to look at other possibilities but be realistic.

There are two things to note here as to why it is the Ooni

1. Who is ogane. "ogane" is obviously a Portuguese corruption of the name of a ruler given to João Afonso d'Aveiro by the Binis
The question now is what ruler in Bini language is called something similar to "ogane"?
We know of "Oghene" which only the Ooni is called so.. Infact "Oghene" as I've said before is Bini corruption of "Oghone" which is a SEY variation of "Ooni"

What other ruler do we know the Binis call something similar to "ogane"??

2. The Ogane mentioned by João Afonso d'Aveiro, is someone who the Oba of Benin had reason to hold in high esteem and one who he seeks blessings from before ascending the throne.
Who apart from the Ooni would have enjoyed such patronage from the Oba of Benin? especially in the late 15th century, a period when Benin had started to grow into an empire

----------------------

By all means suggest any other ruler to the east of Benin, since you are particularly interested in the mention of "east".

You talk about Nupe or Igala, however,
- Nupe is not east but north. that eliminates it leaving Igala.
- Every reference to Igala in Edo state is also pointing their location as North. Even the Akoko Edo people who are north of Bini still point to Igala as north. But let's excuse this seeing as if we want to be exact, it would be northeast.
But the question is - What connection or history points us to any reason a 15th century Omonoba would need to send emissaries to the Atta of Igala?
For ife, we can look to the fact that the oba of Benin traces his ancestry to the ruler of ife. But to the ruler of Igala? Why?
Perhaps Benin was conquered by Igala and that's an omitted backstory to the Benin-Igala war??
Highly unlikely though as I said earlier this was when the Ọba of Benin was growing in power. 1486 should have been after Ewuare's reign or at best towards the end of his reign... Are you saying Ewuare or his sons Ezoti, Olua and Ozolua were sending emissaries to Attah of Igala who had no ancestral connection with them?
And isn't the Atta known also as "Atta" in Bini language? I don't know but if the attah isn't known in Bini with a name similar to the Portuguese "ogane" then doesn't that also eliminate Igala?

Macof is on the other thread mutilating the history of Ada and Eben grin grin
As uncomfortable as knowledge makes you feel you will continue to get it grin

macof:
1. About the Ẹbẹn and Ada

They are known as symbols of the King's Justice and Favor
Ada being a cutlass to execute justice and Ẹben being a fan to deliver mercy or favor

These are purely Yoruba derived

In Yorùbá fan is "Abẹ̀bẹ̀", and cutlass is "Àdá"
Also "ẹ̀bẹ̀" means plea for mercy or a favour (the receiver)
"dá" means to execute, to perform. ie. Execute justice = "dájọ́". (the giver)

You don't have this linguistic representation of the Ceremonial fan and cutlass "Ẹbẹn" and "Ada" in Bini language.

In Bini "execute justice" is bu ohiẹ. To "seek favor" is rinmwian

Also in Bini "cutlass" is Opia (possibly igbo derived), while "Fan" is ezuzu

You can't find the logic behind the names of Ẹbẹn and Ada in Bini language

We can see that only in Yorùbá does "Ẹbẹn" refer to Mercy/favor as well as Fan
So also "Ada" refer to Cutlass as well as execution of justice

2. So much talk about Ologboṣere, yet if asked to give its meaning in Bini you wouldn't be able to.
Even at first look, you can recognise the n-l palatalization which is a signature of Yoruba language.

Oghene is the Bini word for their God and looking at evidence from scholars it doesn't seem to be Ife or even the ooni as the source it is more likely that the origin is of Nupe or Igala and not of yoruba reasons for not choosing Ife include the lack of brass crosses in excavations at Ife but brass crosses have been found in igbo land and especially in nupe and igala land so those are places are more likely to be the origin but the next step is to find the city, why the Oghene had that power and why they lost it and also if Oghene is even a person and not a religious site or metaphor for their God
Anybody can suggest anything but nobody can prove it is of Nupe origin.
Should it be Igala.. It is the same thing I'm saying then as Igala language is a Yoruboid language
Linguistics analysis shows "Oghene" is derived from Yoruboid and in this language family it is the ruler of Ife... As used by the Edo people too. So what exactly is the problem?

PS. Nupe would be North, so that is out of it if you want to take the "east" seriously

1486 João de Barros: Pre-Protuguese Christian influence in Benin - Ibid., 126-7

Among the many things which the King D. João learnt from the ambassador of the king of Benin, and also from João Afonso d'Aveiro, of what they had been told by the inhabitants of these regions, was that to the east of Beny at twenty moons' journey which according to their account, and the short journeys they make, would be about two hundred and fifty of our leauges there lived the most powerful monarch of these parts, who was called Ogané. Among the pagan chiefs of the territories of Beny he was held in as great veneration as is the Supreme Pontif with us. In accordance with a very ancient custom, the king of Beny, on ascending the throne, sends ambassadors to him with rich gifts to announce that by the decease of his predecessor he has succeeded to the kingdom of Beny, and to request confirmation. To signify his assent, the prince Ogané sends the king a staff and a headpiece of shining brass, fashioned like a Spanish helmet, in place of a crown and sceptre. He also sends a cross, likewise of brass, to be worn round the neck, a holy and religious emblem similar to that worn by the Knights of the Order of Saint John. Without these emblems the people do not recognize him as lawful ruler, nor can he call himself truly king. All the time this ambassador is at the court of Ogané, he never sees the prince, but only the curtains of silk behind which he sits, for he is regarded as sacred. When the ambassador is leaving, he is shown a foot below the curtains as a sign that the prince is within and agrees to the matters that he has raised; this foot they reverence as though it were a sacred relic. As a kind of reward for the hardships of such a journey the ambassador receives a small cross, similar to that sent to the king, which is thrown round his neck to signify that he is free and exempt from all servitudes, and privileged in his native country, as the Knights are with us.
That's what you get when you rely too much on European accounts. I know Bini people here who act as if anything the Europeans wrote is exactly as is written and what they didn't write did not exist.

The two biggest clues is that
1. this ruler is referred to as if the Oba of Benin pays him homage, not necessarily a subject but a figure that he seeks blessing from as one who even the writer imagines to be the most powerful ruler in that part of the world.
The only person that would be in such position is the Ooni.. Forget modern Nigerian ethnopolitics, oba of Benin and Ooni of Ife used to be very close

2. Ogane seems to be a Portuguese corruption of Oghene. Oghene which is in turn a Bini corruption of Oghone - Southeast Yoruba dialect of Owoni or Ooni

And what does -ṣerè mean that makes adding it to "Ológbò" refer to Leopard
You see how you are the one making fabrications grin

Also "Ológbò" is not the word found in "Ologboṣerè"

If you use the word "Ada" for sword in Bini then it is also a Yoruba input because that is Yoruba for cutlass.
And while cutlass is technically also a sword.. We don't use it to refer to any kind sword, Yoruba were master blacksmiths and give names to different kinds of swords. "ada" is particularly what we call cutlass, it is not for war and as such rarely used as a weapon, we use the Idà and Ògbo. the Ada of a king we are talking about is neither Idà nor Ògbo.. It is a cutlass not a long sword or a double-edge sword

None of the Obas up till Oba Ovonramwen have any relationship with Ife. It all started after Ovonramwen. Esan are the closest to Benin and yet they don't subscribe to the Benin/Ife relationship. Urhobo and others tribes in Delta, Rivers and other parts of the southern and middle belt region that traces their origin to Benin are not aware.

Benin/Ife relationship is strictly Oba Eweka alliance with the Yorubas to safe his throne and dynasty that the British wanted to end.

There is absolutely no evidence of Benin/Ife relationship before Oba Ovonramwen was removed by the British.
I like how after seeing that nobody pays attention to your Bini revisionist campaign of turning oduduwa into a Bini Prince
You guys on this forum have unanimously decided to do away with any Ife connection at all grin grin... Well almost unanimously
Now oduduwa is no longer a Bini Prince, Bini had no relationship with Ife grin

I'm not surprised. Yorubas are known to stick to lies even in face of undeniable truth. 'Oga' is yoruba?, wow......how far do you intend to go with these lies?
What lies? It is not true that in urhobo four is "ẹne"
So where do you get ẹne from "Ọghẹnẹ"
And how did "ọga" come into the mix? /g/ is not /gh/

And yes. "Ọgá" is Yoruba

Firstly, we uruegbo do not associate with beni or edo generally. Your "points" mean nothing when you are history books written by frauds. Your breakdown is actually very stupid, trying to link two unrelated words for the purpose of implanting your people in the glorious history of uruegbo.

Now let me teach you the truth about those unrelated words you were trying to link like a child learning a word. Ooni is a corruption of the word 'onini' meaning great or grand leader in uruegbo. The word oghene is a combination of two uruegbo words, 'oga' or 'ogi' meaning 'lord' and 'ene' meaning 'four'. 'ogaene' literally means 'lord (of the) four'.
Lol.

grin grin grin I Don laugh tire

Unfortunately for you, urhobo call it "ọghẹnẹ" not "ọgaẹne"... Ẹne being "four"
I don't know what word you were trying to break down there lad grin

Btw, you see that "ọga" you mentioned, I hope you know it's a Yoruboid input too grin grin grin

I'm not Beni, I'm uruegbo(urhobo)......

Besides, truth is something the world currently lacks going by the large scale sick distortion of factual history and appalling identity theft both on this forum by you and your colleagues and in your "history" books.
As far as you affiliate with Benin kingdom you are Bini in this conversation.
Naphtali44:
the glorious kingdom will rise again and bring trouble to the invaders
And you have the exact miscreant mentality Bini youths are known for on the Internet especially on this forum.
Cry me a river grin deal with my points by making a superior argument. I broke down those words, show how my break down is wrong, don't cry on my mentions grin mr. Truth
