Culture › Re: Fact About Pa Idu by macof(m): 7:33pm On Jul 23, 2022 |
RedboneSmith: Nope. I didn't say it has roots in both Esan and Igbo. It's origin is unequivocally Igbo, and diffused to both Esan and Benin. You didn't understand what I said there.
And, no. The Southeasterners don't use idumu to mean quarters like is done in Anioma, but this doesn't mean that etymologically the roots of 'Idumu' cannot be understood by a Southeasterner. It was an Anioma innovation but linguistically is still Igboid. To give an example: in the southeast, soup is called 'ofe' in Standard Igbo, but the Ikwerre of Rivers State call it 'mini wiri'. But does it mean "mini wiri" is not Igboid? No. 'mini wiri' is cognate with 'miri nri' which means 'food' s water' or 'sauce for eating food' in Igbo. The Ikwerre word is therefore still etymologically Igbo, even if it isn't used in Central/Standard Igbo. It's the same basic concept with Idumu.
Then you should be able to break it done into its constituent units and explain it. But you apparently can't. And while we are on the topic of Igbo expressions loaned to Edo:
I hope you won't disagree that the "Uku" that appears in the praise name of your Oba "Uku Akpolokpolo" is from the Igbo word for "big or great".
Or that the Edo word for gun, osisi, is from the Igbo word for stick (applied to the early daneguns because they looked like long sticks), and is still used to describe guns throughout Anioma.
Or that the Edo word for skirt buluku, is from the Igbo word 'mbuluku' or 'mbunuku' or 'mbenuku/mbenukwu', which in Igbo means 'that which is girded around the waist'.
Which language isn't continually evolving and borrowing? What exactly is the point of this paragraph?
Deliberately evasive. I will be waiting for an Edo etymology of Idu and Idumwun. Cheers. Thanks for this knowledge. You should do a series on words in other languages with igbo origins using etymological breakdowns like this because we rarely see igbo language broken down.. At least I don't |

Ologbo147: Itsekiris are not up to a million, the Yorubas in Edo state are not more than a hundred thousand, kabba is the least populated senatorial district in kogi state making up about twenty percent of the population of the state(1.2 million at most). Kogi and kwara even are not strong population centres(Yorubas in kwara will be at most 3 million. These numbers cumulatively would staggeringly make six million. We know Ekiti is a bonus state. Among the least populated in the country. Cannot be more than 3million now. Osun is just there too, no viable bubbling town there, would hardly make 3.5million.
I think most persons ordinarily count kogi west and kwara as part of Yoruba save for itsekiri which won't add much when counted alongside. I don't know what else to call oyedepo and the afolayan family if not Yoruba not like they have Yoruba denial issues. Or smart adeyemi from kogi west. All Yorubas I have seen from kogi west and kwara own it with their full chest that they are yorubas. You only call people what they call themselves. You are barking up what is tantamount to guesses as I already stated in my very first comment Nobody knows what the population of anybody is as a matter of fact. |

Ologbo147: Yorubas being 35 million even would be wild guess. No major tribe in Nigeria is more than 35 million believe or not. Semi major groups in Nigeria have experienced "stunted growth" as a result of analysis by men from major groups. Groups like ibibio-annang-efik would hardly scale 15 million when analysed by these men but Yoruba which was just twice the number of this group in 1921 According to the census at the time is given the number 45 million like if the ibiboid groups experienced genocide. Same with other semi major groups like kanuri, Fulani and Tiv which are heavily downplayed Well I don't know what you are trying to get at by comparing Yoruba to Ibibio But I will remind you the Yoruba include those in Kwara, Kogi, Delta and Edo states who are often left out |

Our Masquerades are diabolic Why because its African and not from Europe or the Middle East?? shogsman: I'm in my early 30s, I've got a bsc in sociology, a master's degree in statistics and like a dozen other professional degrees in human resource management, gerentology, demography, financial risk management, oil and gas services, pmp and so on.
Infact I'm basically one of the most educated individuals I've met. The sad part is I've never made a cent off my educational qualifications. Heck I work in a totally different industry and make a good living which I'm definitely not going to trade for social work or psychology, so this past few days I get myself thinking what a waste of Time and resources that was, I literarily spent millions on my education, even relocating abroad to study but it was all a goddamn waste of time, all I got is a useless paper I'm never going to use.
My advice to young ones out there is to set your goals right and stupid untraditional ideas is better than no ideas. You don't necessarily have to pursue a degree to be okay in life. That is because you were after paper not after the actual education. And it's not your fault but the typical Nigerian environment encourages going to school just as an avenue to get a degree hoping for cash to start flowing in after rather than just getting educated and developing skills and self development We need to set goals and map the path, failure to do so and the school or degrees we have can indeed be a waste of time |
