Why all the wahala? Let the under-40's among the ladies start sending photos if they feel like. Can I send my grand-daughter's photo? She is really cute and is she permitted to contest on behalf of her dearest granny?

And boys stop the noise, you already assume all the girls are ugly, you may be very wrong. You may just tempt me to email something.

CultureRe: Why do Nigerian Women Bear Their Father's Name, After Marriage? by madamL(f): 1:40pm On Nov 17, 2009
There is always a genuine reason for keeping the father's name after marriage. A real change of name and notification and adaptation is far more bigger a task than publishing it in the newspapers. Some simply let things be and find a space for both surnames to minimise stress of explanation

Again one of the hard things after marriage is you getting used to a brand new surname. It was hard for me in that I worked at a job then where I needed to write my name repeatededly everyday. I will start off with papa's name and then cancel it and write the new name. Strange, but the names don't really fully change. My old school mates and I have never gotten used to the new names and still address each other with good old papa's surname.

Does it really bother men?

My dear Shinatu, I was only saying lawyer forgot that some of us didn't know him before the post. Maybe he is a top shot but I never encountered him before the post. He assumed we all know him and his touted good works.

I didn't say they should not praise him. I am only saying in the last part that if he wants to sell to a larger audience he has to realise that new people sign up daily and so he must have to convince them too. If he is not adviced to show tolerance and patience, he will always have this type of problem since a typical Nigerian greets any money story with suspicion.

I run a biz in which I sell everyday and I know what I take at the hands of customers but that is not enough to pack up and leave. My skin is as thick as that of an elephant now. I don't quite enjoy the hassles but I have learnt to live with them and reach out to even more customers.

The problem is that those his fans are not allowing him to concentrate. That area of town he is selling is a big risk. I truly bought and lost three plots there. Another friend lost ten cool plots. She sold her plots at Crown Estate to pay for the ten. Another lost his own land plus they knocked down a house he had already started building.

Lawyer asked me to name the family and all that but I decided not to when I saw where he implied I must have done something wrong to make them take back the land. That was too annoying. I knew he and his fans will never believe me and will only use the information to abuse me even more since they have already decided I lost the plots due to my stupidity.

Enough said on my part about this matter. Lawyer can decide to win the rest of us or sell to his fans. A lot of new entrants to NL are big buyers and this is an anonymous location so you never can tell who you are addressing and his or her purchasing power. I think he has to know the site is growing and NL is attracting top shots who he can catch with more patience. Me, I am off to my own dear wahala customers.

Marmaduke, no one is out to destroy your lawyer but anyone who dishes out insults and is not able to endure some of it is immature. Like someone pointed out here, he was dealing with a mixed multitude and not all of us are aware of his much touted goodness. In Nigeria, the norm, if you value your money, is to be very cautious.

Lawyer ought to know that and so not type big words of abuse when people were just doing no harm by saying shine your eyes. Your lawyer seems to be under the impression he is such a big NL shot that we all know him and are ready to worship at his altar of touted honesty. That is very far from the truth except for those who only check the property threads.

He can choose to be very polite and tolerant if he wants to post for everyone in NL or restrict it to where only his fan club members can see his treasures and snap them up. I have had cause to place a call to one of the property people on NL.

For lawyer, I can only repeat that he learns tolerance or develops a thick skin. If not, he will only find solace in dealing with just the people fawning and praising him as if he is the best thing to happen to this world. He can choose to broaden his horizon by becoming more accommodating or allow the people praising him to high heavens to limit his reach. I repeat, nothing personal against him.

Saying BUYERS BEWARE has never hurt anyone who is not too proud. If you read well, all you would have seen is BUYERS BEWARE.

You have a bloated opinion of yourself and that is the problem. I think you don't bother reading other sections of NL or insults won't hurt you the way you claim it did. You may have many enemies on NL but many of us are not your enemies.

The matter would not have gotten out of hand the way it did if you had not started badmouthing people and even offering dictionary definitions of the insults you were dishing out.

You made jest of out fears, not realising how much some of suffered over land and how cautious we have become.  You can choose to trim down your pride especially when dealing with people who don't know you well or burst yourself in your anger like the proverbial cricket roasting over fire.

Sweeten your speech with sugar while selling, I also have stuff I sell but I have learnt to let the customer exhaust all his worry and fears and then give every assurance rather than cut him off halfway with abuses.

Change a bit and leave off a little of your pride.
PoliticsAppeal Court Panel Unanimously Dismisses Andy Uba's Petition by madamL(op): 3:25pm On Nov 13, 2009
Appeal Court Panel Unanimously Dismisses Andy Uba's Petition

Andy Uba, the controversial former domestic aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, today lost his case at the special election's appeals panel made up of Court of Appeal justices sitting in Enugu. Spontaneous and widespread celebration broke out in the streets of Enugu and Anambra States as soon as word spread about Uba’s latest humiliating defeat.

The five-judge panel led by Justice J. Sylvanus Ngwuta unanimously dismissed Uba’s application to be declared Anambra’s “governor-in-waiting” based on the fraudulent electoral exercise conducted by the Professor Maurice Iwu-led electoral commission in April 2007.

“The justices have finally rescued their names from ignominy and Anambra from a serious constitutional crisis,” said a lawyer who was present in court to hear the panel announce its decision.

The lawyer further stated that several reports by Saharareporters exposing massive behind-the-scene corrupt deals between Uba and some of the justices led to a massive public outcry, including a threat by Ikemba Nnewi, Emeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, who said the country could be embroiled in another civil war should the justices sell the judgment to Uba.

Our earlier investigation, which included information from sources within the Enugu Division of the court, indicated that the majority of justices on the panel had planned to deliver a favorable judgment to Uba. But following our revelations, the panel could not sit last week since the justices feared serious public reprisals in the tension-soaked southeast if Uba was declared governor. Also, Saharareporters reported that two of the judges, Mrs. Kudirat Kekere Ekun and Mr. Paul Galinje, did not accept to be part of the deal brokered by outgoing President of the Court of Appeal, Umaru Abdullahi, Uba’s lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun (who also represented Yar’adua in the presidential elections case), and Andy Uba.

Our sources revealed that today's judgment turned decisively against Uba, when a third justice, Abdul Aboki, switched sides and went against Uba, thus ending a majority support for the rogue politician. The justices who presided over the case flew into Enugu last night from a judges’ retreat in Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross Rivers State.

A source within the court told Saharareporters that Mr. Olanipekun was absent in court today as one of the justices had forewarned him that his client’s case was going to collapse. In court was a senior advocate, Amaechi Mwaiwu, representing the Independent National Electoral Commission.

INEC had played a sneaky role in Uba’s latest legal battle, seeking to persuade the court to uphold Uba’s fraud-ridden election. INEC chairman Maurice Iwu is a well-known supporter of Uba’s ambition to become governor.

We had reported on several occasions that Andy Uba and his elder brother, Ugochukwu, were responsible for persuading Obasanjo to nominate Iwu for the INEC post where he conducted a round of elections universally condemned as the worst in human history.

In handing out its verdict today, the panel told Uba in clear terms that his application lacked merit.

“Today's judgment has put an end—a welcome finality—to Uba's dry runs to return to Anambra State as governor,” said another lawyer, a senior advocate of Nigeria, speaking from Lagos.

However, a source close to Uba had told Saharareporters early yesterday that the former presidential aide had told some of his closest associates of his intention “to make another try at the Supreme Court once Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu takes over as the Chief Justice early next year.” The source said Uba is counting on his “rapport” with Justice Katsina-Alu.

However, a source within the apex court said Justice Katsina-Alu was highly unlikely to “take up Uba’s case any time soon,” adding that the cost to the reputation of the Supreme Court “would be too grave to contemplate.” He predicted an open mutiny of justices if anybody, even the future chief justice, attempts to bring in Uba’s case again under any guise.

Today’s resounding defeat for Uba marks the sixth time Nigerian courts would unanimously reject his judicial efforts to buy his way back to Anambra as governor after justices of the Supreme Court ruled that his two-week stint as governor of the state was an anomaly.

A lawyer in Abuja told Saharareporters this morning that she was ashamed of unscrupulous lawyers “who have accepted Uba’s briefs to facilitate Uba’s numerous ill-advised forays to the courts,” adding that “a senior lawyer like Chief Olanipekun ought to have advised Uba against the reckless action of asking the Court of Appeal to, in effect, overrule the Supreme Court which had determined that Uba’s so-called election was a nullity.”

Uba had spent “more than $100 million” in his futile bid to regain the governor’s seat, according to a source close to him. The source added that judges always promised him a positive outcome, “but they always shocked him by dismissing his petitions.”

It is not your biz but do it in the name of universal sisterhood binding all women. She can always confront the guy and tthrash out the matter. If it is a lie, she will know unless she is totally undiscerning.

Lawyer, I never said I needed your help to reclaim any land, I can take the loss and get on with my life. Lt has nothing to do with you but everything to do with there being a lot of fraudsters in town and a lot of desparate sweet-talking salesmen. In case you don't know someone can lose land for no reason af anything she did.

I have proof that I bought the land but you surely don't expect me to allow myself get killed ovrt three plots of land.

I bought some more from my state government and the FCT and no one is making any trouble for me. I repeat: abuse us all you want, call me frustrated but no one will believe you easily. I don't know you too men? and have never done any biz with you and you really want me to believe everything you say without thinking? Do you realise they are more fraudsters in town than honest

Fear of flying which got worse around the period aircraft were dropping from the sky weekly in Nigeria. I have prayed, fasted and prayed some more but it won't go. I quote a powerful scripture to stabilise myself before boarding and hold my breath till we land.

I used to feel more relaxed in international flights but not anymore, not after that Air France fell from the sky on a bright day and disappeared in the water.

I still fly though, what can I do?

AutosNear Aircraft Collision Over Port Harcourt by madamL(op): 2:06pm On Nov 05, 2009
From Madu Onuorah (Abuja) and Wole Shadare (Lagos) Guardian Newspaper

AVIATION Minister, Babatunde Omotoba, yesterday announced the suspension of the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) on duty when two aircraft almost collided in the air in Port Harcourt, Rivers State last Friday.

The Federal Government has also grounded the two aircraft involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, for a viable aviation sector, aircraft giant, Boeing, has said African airlines need $70 billion to finance and acquire 620 planes in the next 20 years.

The company's Vice-President, Sales, Ihssane Munir, spoke at the 18th African Aviation Finance Conference, with theme 'Air finance for Africa,' which ended yesterday.

Omotoba told journalists after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja that the supervisor on duty at the time of the Port Harcourt incident had been queried.

He however remarked that the avoidance of the incident and the full take-off of the total radar coverage for the nation was sufficient evidence that Nigeria's airspace is safe.

According to Omotoba, "this is a very good forum for me to assure Nigerians that Nigeria's airspace is safe. Last Friday, there was an air mishap over Port Harcourt. An aircraft was taking off from Calabar, while another one was coming to land in Calabar, and they were about to collide over Port Harcourt.

"Our investigations revealed to us that the air incident was due to Air Traffic Controller's error. The ATC, when we looked at his log book, actually asked the pilot that was coming to land to descend to a level of 21,000 feet, whereas what he put down on his log was 25,000 feet. And then he also asked the one taking off to Lagos to stay at 24,000 feet, so they had to cross path. What saved the situation was the line of defence we have in our airspace. On every aircraft in Nigeria, we have what we call Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS).

"One of the aircraft was able to notice that another was coming very close to it, and then it decided to come down 5,000 feet to ensure there was no collision. We are happy to discover that there was no collision, and the TCAS that was put on our aircraft is working, otherwise it would have been disastrous on Friday," he said.

Other actions taken by the ministry, Omotoba said, include the grounding of the two aircraft. "We have also called the crew, there is an investigation going on between Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). The first meeting was held on November 3, and then we also got all the ATC's tapes, as well as the log book. It was from there that we realised that it was ATC's error."

He said: "In addition to being ATC error, one would have expected that the aircraft coming to land should have also noticed, because, from our investigations, we have noticed that it was only one aircraft that was able to get that signal. Now, we have checked, the aircraft coming to land also has TCAS, but we are inviting an expert to look at all our aircraft to be sure that the TCAS we have are not epileptic. With the other line of defence we have, by the end of this month when the total radar coverage is fully up, the ATCs in Port Harcourt, would be reduced, they would be able to see clearly."

Omotoba said the ATC that made the mistake had been suspended and his supervisor queried as investigation continues.

The convener of the summit on African aviation, Nick Fadugba, said financing and leasing are critical to aviation, but chided African governments for not attaching importance to it, hence the sorry situation of the sector.

This came as the Federal Government assured that it would rescue local airlines from imminent collapse.

Although the government did not give details of its plan, it simply said the palliatives would be included in the 2010 budget.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Aviation Matters, Captain Shehu Usman Iyal, however, ruled out cash gifts to the carriers.

At the 18th yearly African Aviation Finance Conference which started on Tuesday, Iyal said government had realised and "ascertained that operators in Nigeria are yoked by debilitating debt and the inability to meet the rising cost of doing business," adding that President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was ready to look into the problems of the airlines.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the clearing house for global airlines, had recently predicted that "airlines in the African region will lose $500 million in 2009."

Iyal said since meetings on how to rescue the airlines were still on-going, he could not ascertain in what form the palliatives would take.
