U hv two options, it's either u channel to the nearest gutter or to the soak-away pit. Channeling to the gutter is wrong and against environmental laws. Buh channeling to the soakaway is best and it dosent necessarily causes it to full, cos d soakaway is never filled up, d water naturally drains away to the surrounding earth. What gets filled up is d septic tank which is water tight and airtight for anerobic decaying of d solid wastes. The solid waste settles to d bottom while d liquid waste floats on top and as usage continues, d liquid wastes flows into d soakaway and still drains from it. So, in summary, channel to a nicely built soakaway with proper perforations on d walls and u hv notin to worry about.

Just find out if all the items mentioned below are included in the scope of work (assuming it's a strip foundation):

5. Starter Bars reinforcement
6. Foundation blocks
7. Formwork for the starter bars
8. Sandfilling
9. Surface treatment (Compacting, Laying of Damproof Membrane, Blinding, Mesh reinforcement etc)
10. DPC formwork
11. Rough-in pipe work for mechanicals
12. Pouring of the DPC concrete.

I'm 100% confident that the estimate given is not for a raft foundation.

Yeah! u are right, the estimate by the engineer is fair! In addition, money for Community boys/youths and other miscellaneous expenses that might arise in the cost of building. Buh the engineer shouldn't have stated #600k for supervision to the DPC, dat will sound outrageous to the client.

The slab u see is similar to the normal clay pot slabs we do here in Nigeria. where by claypots are arranged in similar manner with adequate reinforcement on all sides. However, against most comments above, this method of slabbling doesn't reduce the thickness of the slab, in fact, slabs of this type has thickness ranging from 200mm-250mm, however, concrete volumes are greatly reduced thereby saving cost. Another advantage of this slab over the solid slab is temperature control and sound damping. The calculations are not out of this world, similar calculations involving clay pot hollow slab can still be applied
