Politics / Letter From The Borno Empire To The Sokoto Caliphate In 1824 Lesson For Nigeria by Maisuya1: 9:57am On May 20, 2016
This letter from Shehu Elkanemi of Borno to Sultan Mohammed Bello in January 1824 contains a clear message to all Nigerians.....my gratitude to Aminu Gamawa of Harvard Law School for sharing......

Letter From Sheikh Of Borno To Sultan Mohammed Bello
Dated 23rd of Rabee-ul-thani, 1238; (Corresponding to January, 1824)

Praise be to God, and prayers and peace be unto the Apostle of God (Mohammed).
To the honoured and accomplished, the virtuous and munificent, the pattern of goodness and the standard of benevolence, head of the Soodanic kingdon, and ruler of the country of Hausa, our friend, the learned Mohammed Bello, son of the intelligent sheikh Ossman, whose soul may God shelter with the clouds of mercy and peace.
Our salutation, accompanied with affection as strong as the odour of musk, and as perpetual as the movement of the globe, and with the mercy and blessings of God, be unto you.
Hence, the cause of writing this letter and the purpose of its lines, is to acquaint you that the bearers are English travelers; whose nation, out of all the other Christians, has maintained with the Mooslemeen uninterrupted treaties of religious amity and friendship, established since ancient periods, which they inherited from their forefathers and ancestors; and on this account, they penetrate into Mooslemeen countries whenever they please, and traverse all provinces and lands in confidence and trust, without fear. They came to our country, sent to us by our virtuous and accomplished friend, the Lord Yousuf Pasha, master of Tripoli, to see and delight themselves with the wonders of the Land of Soodan, and to become acquainted with its rarities, as lakes, rivers, and forests (or gardens) ; equal to which are seldom seen in other countries.
After having accomplished their wishes, in seeing all the things that the land of Barnooh (Borno) and its environs contained, they felt anxious to visit your country from what they heard of the innumerable wonders therein. I have, therefore, permitted them to proceed on their journey, accompanying them with letters which explain their object.
You are well aware of what is stated in Alcoraanic sayings upon the subject of the obervance of honour, dictated by our Lord, the Apostle of God; and that the true Mooslemeen have always avoided shedding the blood of Christians, and assisted and protected them with their honour. Be then attentive to these travelers, and cast them not into the corners of neglect; let no one hurt them, either by words or deeds, nor interrupt them with any injurious behavior: but let them return to us, safe, and may the high God bestow upon you the best reward for your treatment to them, and insure to us and to you the path of righteousness for conduct in this life.
Our salutation may be given to all who are about you, and to those who are related to you in general. And peace be unto you.
(Sealed)

Politics / Re: Dangote To Construct Lokoja-ilorin Road -FG by Maisuya1: 5:04pm On May 18, 2016
FACTS

In 2014 income tax for dangote cement was 27 billon Naira

In the same year income tax for the group was 25 billion Naira

Distance between lokoja and ilorin is ~ 330km

Lagos Ibadan is ~ 130km

Lagos Ibadan was awarded to Julius Berger and Reynolds Construction in July of 2013 for 167 billion Naira

Naira has since depreciated from that time to now

OPINION

I am not saying it is a good deal but you draw your conclusion from the above. IMHO, it's not a bad deal given we are cash strapped and in dire need of capital expenditure. But more details are needed on the deal

Last week in kaduna the same thing happened but not in this magnitude to have left overs of ice after the storm. But it was quite considerable ice falling from the sky. I guess this is what is meant by climate change

Politics / Re: Accommodation Crisis Hits Buhari’s Ministers by Maisuya1: 9:35am On May 02, 2016
This is a catch 22 situation.
Although frugality is not a vice, but when ministers are not comfortable they can not concentrate. This can provide unscrupulous contractors and other favour seekers avenue to exploit and entice them with 'gifts'.

Be that as it may, this will be a true test of their character.

No it's not.
Take for instance d scarcity in d downstream, this is corruption fighting back. For a fact I know some powerful independent marketers who lift from government depots through the majors and sell at black market rate or move it across boarder. If government insist they sell at official rate they shut operations and create artificial scarcity. I am not talking of those Mickey Mouse marketers with one or two stations buying 5 to 9 trucks on Tarmacs, am talking of the major independents with station spreads as large as the majors (total, Mobil) lifting millions of litters from government depots as independents and through the majors as cash and carry. These guys have the resources to create ripples in d system.

God bless the OP.

i was just telling my collegues in the office last week that how can we work in kaduna and never visit this place? thats complacency bordering criminality!

For those interested I think its a castle with 5 rooms and you can only rent the whole facility for 250,000/24h and can accomodate 10 persons.

I think its not bad. (you can get their phone details if you google it)

My question is simple. If we devalue our currency and exhaust our less than $30b in foreign reserves on imports (by subsidizing import and not replenishing the reserves as oil is at an all time low)- then what?

Politics / Re: Agatu-fulani Peacetalk Live On AIT by Maisuya1: 12:31pm On Mar 24, 2016
I think there is more to the story than the media is reporting. I watched a clip on facebook where 4 humans were being beaten and burnt to death including a woman in the bush by a mob. The poster claimed it happened in Agatu and that those were fulanis being burnt and beating weeks before their incursion into Agatu. Now I cant verify that clip, but I expect our journalists to have gone all out to get the inside story of the Agatu incident (was it an unprovoked attack, was it a reprisal attack e.t.c).

If we really want to get to the bottom of this, then dialoge and not inciteful reporting is the way. The Fulanis may not have the social media to be reporting their part of the story the way the farming communities do, but that don't give them the right to take laws into their hand.

The media should also be fair in reporting not just the stories but putting them in its proper context. Because when all is said and done and the joutnalist are back in Abuja and Lagos, these two communities (farmers and nomards) still have to coexist and only through dialogue can they do that.

And finally, the Fulanis should be made to understand that they are not above the law (beacause they are gradually venturing into other criminal acts like robbery and kidnapping) and that facilitating dialogues is to avoid communual clashes, any other form of criminality will be met with the full wrath of the law.

Don't go around thinking you are any inch smarter than the soldier who posted that information. No soldier would be silly enough to post secret information publicly, there must have been a reason why this soldier had no qualms posting such info.

Meanwhile you have just publicly insulted the memory of a soldier who died defending your nation, a young man who happens to be someone's son, brother and possibly a husband and a father, and who knows, his loved ones may be here reading your comments and you actually think what you have just done has any semblance of decency?
