France gets deeper in Mali war: Are they ready?

French ground troops in Mali advanced north today toward the tiny hamlet of Diabaly, preparing to engage Islamic rebels in a shooting war whose duration and success are still a question mark.

What began as a limited air campaign last week to counter an ambitious rebel advance southward from strongholds in northern Mali may this week become a full-scale war.

The French are seeking to retake Diabaly from the rebels after the town of 35,000 fell last week and airstrikes did not check rebel advances.

"We will be fighting directly," said French military chief of staff Adm. Edouard Guillaud on Europe 1 television Wednesday. “I am unable to say whether it is in one hour or in 72 hours."

RECOMMENDED: How the French got to airstrikes in Mali: A briefing from Bamako

The French ground assault comes six days after French forces intervened with airstrikes as it appeared Islamist rebels captured Konna, a small town in central Mali close to the strategically vital cities of Sévaré and Mopti.

Despite initial statements by the Malian military that the French strikes drove the Islamists out of Konna, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said yesterday that Konna is still not under the control of the Malian army.

France’s intervention still enjoys broad support among the majority of Malians. But the optimism that defined the early days of the operation has now taken on a more cautious tone.

Both Malians and foreign analysts are grappling with the scale of operations thought necessary to retake northern Mali from the rebels – with many commentators questioning how France could have underestimated the strength of its adversary.

I agree with u that Mali needs to be stabilised, and it is in our interest, but there are alternatives to military action. I don't know of any foreign nation that has militarily stabilised another nation with local insurgency. Neither could the Americans in Iraq or Afghanistan, and neither can the French in Mali, besides as soon as the incursion drags on for too long and election approaches in France, the French will simply pack bags and declare victory however fiticious that may be (just as the Americans are doing in afghanistan and did in iraq). And then nigeria will be left with the infamous status as the 'new big satan' in Africa. And we can't afford to have the attention of alqaeeda in Africa and all her derivatives focused on Nigeria. We don't have what it takes to survive that.

My suggestion is Nigeria shouldn't outrightly decline, but use delay tactics and rhetorics, and intense backstage diplomacy and other foreign policy tools force the concern parties to some kind of a deal or whatever and also to wiggle out of this, cos it's definitely not in our interest going into Mali.
Politics / Is Sending Troops To Mali A Good Idea For Nigeria, Given Our Security Challenges by Maisuya1: 8:32pm On Jan 16, 2013
Just today British and French citizens were killed in Algeria and others abducted by militants, the group responsible claim it is due to French troops operations in Mali. For France this might be a calculated gamble or risk (whichever. Coz overtly or covertly the French sure ain't there to protect Mali or Malian interest but their own interests in Mali - whatever it is)

For nija, our fatherland, what strategic interest are we going there for (especially seeing that our past investment in peacekeeping in Africa hasn't translated to much), and would it be a good idea given our challenges with our own millitants ( especially knowing that gains made on curbing them is fragile and can be eroded with the curent (mis) adventure into Mali)

Let help the discussion here by providing a quranic view of what Islam is. The followiing is from a chapter in the Quran called the prophets, verse 28 to 91

"And We verily gave Moses and Aaron the Criterion (of right and wrong) and a light and a Reminder for those who keep from evil. . . . We bestowed aforetime on Abraham his rectitude of conduct, and well were We acquainted with him. . . . And We bestowed upon him Isaac, and Jacob as a grandson. Each of them We made righteous.
And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). . . .. Remember) Noah, when he cried (to Us) aforetime: We listened to his (prayer) and delivered him and his family from great distress. . . .
And (remember) Job, when He cried to His Lord, "Truly distress has seized me, but Thou art the Most Merciful of those that are merciful.". . . . And remember Zun-nun(Jonah) when he departed in wrath: He imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the depths of darkness, "There is no god but Thou: glory to Thee: I was indeed among the wrong doers". . . . And Zachariah, when he cried unto his Lord: My Lord! Leave me not childless, though Thou art the Best of inheritors. . . . And (remember) her who guarded her chastity: We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for all peoples . . . . LO! THIS, YOUR RELIGION, IS ONE RELIGION, AND I AM YOUR LORD, SO WORSHIP ME. . .'

This my friends is the concept of Islam in Islam.

Religion / Re: What Is A Muslim Worship Like (peaceful Coversation) by Maisuya1: 11:29am On Jan 06, 2013
The two main things that happen on a Friday is the SERMON then the SALAAT (2 units of prayers) there are other acts of worships that go on besides these two which vary from mosque to mosque

THE SERMON

This basically is in Arabic (although some imaams also sermonise in the local language in addition) the theme could be current affairs, historic, worship, etc

THE SALAAT/PRAYER

the prayer proper for Fridays is made up of two units (there are five daily prayers each with it's number of units I.e Dawn prayer is 2 units afternoon 4 units evening 4 units, sunset 3 units and night prayer 4 units)

TO BE CONTINUED ( I shall provide a detailed translation of what every Muslim says in his prayer when standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. Insha Allah)

I don't think Muslims partake in mosque service at midnight today, at least not that I know of. Mainly because the islamic new year was some months back, and even for that there was no official crossover prayer, just every day normal prayers

Islam for Muslims / Re: The Reasons Why Muslim Religious Leaders Dont Have Private Jets by Maisuya1: 7:49am On Nov 14, 2012
Islam lays down a clear path for everything a Muslim does that concerns religion. Thus scholars or preachers do not view the wealth of those that follow them as their own. In fact on the contrary this is what the Quran says;

"Say: "No reward do I ask of you: it is (all) in your interest: my reward is only due from Allah: And He is witness of all things" (34:47)

And anywhere there is cause for contributing wealth Islam stipulates precisely who the beneficiaries should be, lest any private jet owner wannabe thinks otherwise. The Quran explains this in many places, an example is...

"Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom." Normally banks keep personal details of all account holders (it's called KYC - know your customer) and if they don't, u can take action against the bank, coz it is an criminal offence on the banks as far as the CBN is concerned.

So i suggest u report the bank account and name to the efcc. That's a start

It was actually never down, so I wonder what we are celebrating. Just that The cabins/capsules were so dilapidated u would think it's for transportation of circus animals in India, yet people still travel on it that way. So unless new lines are built or new engines acquired claiming to rehabilitate those train is like rehabilitation of a MOLUE BUS instead of getting a new BRT BUS.

What they said was that fasting for one or two days a week makes cells stronger and more resistant to disease.

They didn't say fasting for a whole week or a whole month, ok?

Incidentally, Muslims are encouraged to fast twice a week on the recommendation of the prophet SAW, ( Monday's And Thursday's actually)
