If you are looking at a minimum of a 5 year plan, I will advice you to invest in fundamentally strong and highly liquid stocks.

If the money is quite substantial you can buy an income generating property in a good area.

KingMEXX: As an Undergraduate student on scholarship, i would like to know if there are any investments one can start up using the scholarship grant. Leaving the money in the bank can be very tempting.

Please, any advices? Thankx in advance
How much do you have to invest. How long do you want to invest. These will enable one to provide an answer to your question.

aasog1: Fine business....Just time and capital consuming...but soooo lovely!
I do this, but I didnt really get it until 2006...but here is how it is done:

in 2006, I bought an old property in a road that links Gbagada with Bariga (in most cases, I target rough areas in lagos, with promises of development and upgrades....areas I know the rich and elites are slowly migrating into and which would be transformed within atmost, 4-5 years). I took the first two years to raise a 5 bedroom duplex, and 2 bedroom bq on it, and gradually did the finishing on the third year based on the flow of cash....by 2009 ending, the property was ready and placed on the market for 40mil. It sold in 9 months, and I made over 65% profit as im an engineer and handled the project myself wink....And since them, other strategic properties have been purchased, remodeled rebuilt from scratch, just that now, I work with my bank instead, and me and the manager of my branch are like partners....Hes brought some money bags into the bidness over the years, the sad thing is, we still keep making the mistakes we did in the past....house flipping isnt a wonderful business like "land flipping....call me so I can explain that".

Good slow investment business sha....Mind you, it is an investment and it yeilds excellent....it is not buying and selling like garri and beans grin
DO you have a valid title to the property. If yes how long did it take you to get the valid title in your name.

A property that does not have a valid title in the name of the owner can not be used as a collateral.

jamace: That is true.

Smart investors have already taken position by investing in stocks of their choices.

Invest while the day is young!
You also need to invest when you are young, so that you wont play catch up at old age.

I THOUGHT YOU READ THAT ESSAY I POSTED IN MY THREAD ?. NEXT YOU WILL SAY IS THAT THEIR FATHER GAVE THEM A PLACE TO RUN A COMPANY OR THEY BOUGHT A PC FOR THEM. A living example is "TRIMIT".
You can not force an investor to invest in what he does not believe in. I wish you all the best in your search for investors.

Redoil: please manie when is thier closing date
The result is not out, just made a forecast based on the earnings for the 3rd quarter.
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 4:36pm On Apr 03, 2013
manie: Now is the result declaration period for more than 70% of the companies listed on the Nigerian stock exchange. The results so far declared are not too bad.
Congrats to the investors who mopped up shares when they were selling at low prices, we pray that the harvest for the year ending 2013 will be a super bumper harvest.

I am anxiously waiting for the results from FBN and UBA.

The declaration from the Palm oil and Rubber Plantation by Okomu Oil is the bomb. Okomu Shareholders who bought at N10 to N15.00 should expecting a ten bagger. This is a term I learnt from Peter Lynch.

NB Okomu Oil closed at N87.70k today.
With the right management, manpower, infrastructure and business acumen, I think legitimately wealth can be created from the Agricultural sector. Okomu and Presco are in the Agricultural sector, and they are creating wealth for their shareholders.

UBA should be able to pay 70k dividend.

shigidi: Spot on! I think they are very good. Bear in mind Nigerian Breweries paid the same dividend as Zenith, at six times the share price. Also bear in mid the banks have a much lower PEG.
NB paid N3.00, but Zenith paid N1.60k. EPS of NB is about N4.00, while Zenith EPS is over N3.00. I think NB, Unilever, Nestle and PZ are over-valued earning wise.
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 3:13pm On Apr 03, 2013
Seun: Agreed. What are their profits like?
I think Zenith made an earning per share of over N3.00, Access made EPS of almost N1.70k. I think these figures are not too bad considering the prices the stocks.

glogirl: Manie,
I don't know how long you've been trading stocks, but you have to realize that the banks have never had the history of paying huge dividends. They are heaviliy capitalized and a bank like GTB has about 25billion shares in the SE. So even if they pay out their entire PAT of 86billionn they can't pay more than 3 naira. I think 0.60 is ok. Let's pray for hifher profits next year and then beta dividennds.
You compare the dividend paid with the price of the stock. You also need to consider the earning of the stock.

Born 2be Rich: Bros thats the same question that came to my mind....however, i believe government hands are involved in aid the company
Their is no country where farmers or stakeholders in the Agricultural sectors are not subsidized by government.

valacious: i cant but agree with you sir, the basic thing is seeing opportunities. i think the good old days are coming back.
What do you have to say, concerning the bumper harvest from Okomu Oil?
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 1:27pm On Apr 03, 2013
valacious: yea i agree, but investors appetite were low then boss! most bought at N9 and above, and waited for this poor result. arma akinbo for first bank.
Astute investors buy when ordinary investors' appetites are low. Access also went below N6.00 some months ago.
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 1:18pm On Apr 03, 2013
valacious: access bank final dividend 0.60k, total dividend 0.85k, so poor. SELL! nahco- 0.25k worst! SELL! spill them blood on the arena! lol
Not too bad, it is manageable. It depends on the price you paid for the stock. Some investors bought this stock for less than N7.00
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 1:15pm On Apr 03, 2013
We should not be surprised if a stock like Zenith eventually gets close to N30.00k
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 1:12pm On Apr 03, 2013
valacious: @manie, pls just buy grin
FBN is about my heaviest investment portfolio on the exchange.
Investment › Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by manie(m): 1:11pm On Apr 03, 2013
Okomu Oil has crossed the N80.00k mark, we should not be surprised when this stock gets to N100.00k

How come the companies that are making billions of naira profits from the Agricultural sector are all foreign owned. Okomu and Presco have more than 50% foreign shareholding.

Omexonomy: you are not saying no but you are saying not now.
UPDC was listed about 13 years ago at N5.00k, yet the stock is still selling less than N20.00k. Compared to UACN and CAP and some other companies in the UACN, i don't think the performance of UPDC is fantastic.

manie: Investors with multiple streams of income benefited immensely from the stock market meltdown. They kept on accumulating shares on the exchange at ridiculously low prices. Some people have made 300% returns on UBA within 24 months.

Investors who bought when the market was doing badly, will definitely get a higher dividend yield.
I asked an investor who committed a substantial sum into stocks when the All Share Index went down to around 20,000, why he was still investing heavily on blue chip stocks.

He said if his house was valued at 100 million 2 years ago and was generating a rent of 8 million Naira, now the house is values at 70 million and generating a rent of the same 8 million Naira. What will I do as an investor if I still have money to invest. I said I will buy more houses, he said that was what he was doing.

feelamong: At times it seems like you are preaching when you tell people to take time and study the market and coys they are investing in...Manie has said it all!

For anyone to make money in any endeavour, it takes time and energy! you also have to be patience!

I have made money and also losses in the market but in all I have made more money than losses! Just a few of months ago.. I bought Diamond bank at N1.99, sterling at 0.99k and UBA at N2.

I intend to hold these stocks for the next five years at least before i start selling for a start up...

The less people that understand the market.. the better for us!! no wonder its so diff to make the kind of money we make in the NSE in the LSE!

Omexonomy: Manie well done for doing a good job. I am about paying for UAC property dev. IPO what are the potentials of the IPO considering UNION HOMES has not move from the initial fifty naira. And is the UPDC a good buy.
The performance of UPDC since it was quoted is not too encouraging. May be when they start building housing units of 15 million naira and below, which will be affordable to the working class then I may increase my shareholding.

Peterwins: I was in the financial industry (banking and non-banking) for several years but still a keen observer in local and international finance. If most people know (realise) the "real" undercurrents (trade secrets) of finance/business/investment they will probably make less mistakes in their respective investment decisions.

Over the years I realised there was (are) majorly two classes of investors namely the objective ones (those who could confidently answer rightly or wrongly most of my questions posed above) or the subjective ones (often emotional investors) who just want to make investments (grow their money/wealth) without clearly defined investment goals and objectives.
All things being equal the objective investors ought to create more wealth than the subjective ones.
