President Muhammadu Buhari has lauded Nigerians for curbing excessive taste for foreign products, which has positioned the country for food self-sufficiency, and resulted into savings of over $21 billion. The President said the humongous savings will be deployed to other critical areas like infrastructure, education, health care, and many others. President Buhari was reacting to recent disclosures by the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, who spoke at the 2018 Annual Bankers’ Dinner, where he said: “Noticeable declines were steadily recorded in our monthly food import bill from US$665.4 million in January 2015 to US$160.4 million as at October 2018, a cumulative fall of 75.9% and an implied savings of over US$21 billion on food imports alone over that period. Most evident were the 97.3% cumulative reduction in monthly rice import bills, 99.6% in fish, 81.3% in milk, 63.7% in sugar, and 60.5% in wheat. We are glad with the accomplishments recorded so far.” President Buhari said with the commitment of Nigerian farmers, and the support given by the government, “in no distant future, food importation will be completely alien to us, and we will even export actively, thus reversing our position as a mono- product economy.” https://leadership.ng/2018/12/09/pmb-applauds-over-21bn-savings-on-food-import-promises-greater-strides/ Lalasticlala oam4j mynd44 |

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate refurbishing of the Okundi Community Healthcare Centre in Boki LGA of Cross River State 57 years after. It was built by Nigeria’s former foreign minister, late Chief Matthew T. Mbu in 1961 and handed over to the government of then Eastern Region. ADVERTISEMENT The acting executive secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Mallam Bello said the president had directed that the agency should use the proceeds of the lottery to refurbish and equip the health centre to enable the people access it instead of allowing it to waste. Bello said, “The exercise of equipping this hospital with critical medical facilities through funding from the national lottery is a clear demonstration of the federal government’s desire to foster better inclusion of the most vulnerable segments of our society, especially women and children. We are confident this special intervention will assist this community to address its immediate medical needs..” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/57-years-after-buhari-orders-overhaul-of-cross-river-medical-centre-with-lottery-fund.html? President Muhammadu Buhari calls for calm over deadly violence in Cross River has expressed concern over reports of violence in four communities in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State. The violence has resulted in loss of lives, injuries and displacement of villagers. Calling for calm and restoration of peace in the affected communities bordering Abia State, the President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, urged the people of the areas to allow law and order to prevail. “Our communities must be ready to live together in peace since no development can take place in an atmosphere of recurring violence,” he said. The Kashimbilla Hydropower Plant in Taraba State is 100 per cent complete and will commence generating about 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity by February, 2019, to the national grid, the Federal Government has said. The project was conceived to solve ecological problems and improve power supply. Although the dam project designed to have a 500-million cubic metre reservoir was awarded in 2007, actual construction work by SCC Nigeria Limited began in 2010. Giving update on the project during an inspection tour last weekend, the Project Manager at the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Engr. Aliyu Abubakar, said while the power plant was ready, the power evacuation project was at 88 per cent, with a commitment to complete it at most in February, 2019. Engr. Abubakar said, “The power evacuation project is 88 per cent complete. However, the hydropower plant is 100 per cent complete. It was built and handed over to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources on October 17, 2017.” He said the transmission line would take the power to a 120MVA transmission substation in Takum and would move to Wukari, a distance of 75km from the plant. “After supplying to Takum and Wukari, the excess electricity will be supplied to the Yandev substation where eventually the power will be connected to the national grid through Aliade, which has the 330kv transmission substation at Makurdi in Benue State,” he noted. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fg-targets-40mw-by-feb-2019-as-kashimbilla-hydro-plant-hits-100-completion.html?
