PoliticsJonathan: I Don't Control Boko Haram... by ManirBK(op): 11:23am On Dec 01, 2018
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he cannot take responsibility for the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls because he doesn't control Boko Haram
More than 100 girls were kidnapped from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014.
Speaking on the kidnap, which happened during his administration, Jonathan said he could not say whether he was right or wrong on the kidnap, or that he was trying to remove himself from blame.
He stated this in an interview with BBC on Friday.
His words: "Immediately the Chibok [schoolgirls] issue came up, we expected Nigerians to be concerned. ‘How do we get these girls out?’ Within a couple of days, we saw people going to the US with Bring Back Our Girls placards. How? Why? And of course, Mrs Obama received one of those placards. I cannot take responsibility for that abduction. I don’t control Boko Haram. They are criminals.
"But as a president, of course you know it’s not the president that goes to the fields. You have security and intelligence officers that do the work. Let me admit that yes, maybe they do their best, but their best was not good enough for us to recover the girls. That I cannot say I am right or I am wrong. That does not mean I am trying to remove myself from any blame. Yes I may not be blamed for the action, but I could be blamed that my security and intelligence systems were not strong enough to be able to rescue the girls.
"If I as a politician, will tell the whole world that my political ambition fir any single office is not worth the blood of any Nigerian, how will I be happy that girls have been kidnapped? I’m not that kind of character."

PoliticsPolice Speak On Strange Armed Group Sighted In Sokoto by ManirBK(op): 10:44am On Dec 01, 2018
The police in Sokoto State on Friday said a strange group sighted in a part of the state was not operating on Nigerian territory or carrying arms.
PREMIUM TIMES earlier Friday reported complaints by locals that a strange armed group from neighbouring Niger Republic was operating in parts of Tangaza Local Government Area of the Sokoto State, carrying arms and demaning levies from residents.
The police, however, downplayed the complaints by residents of the border community.
Speaking on Friday evening, police spokesperson in the state, Cordelia Nwawe, told PREMIUM TIMES that the state police commissioner, Murtala Mani, and his deputy in charge of operations, Baba Isa, went to Tangaza on Friday to attend to the situation.
“There’s nothing like armed bandits, there is no need for people to be scared. The commissioner of police and his deputy in charge of operations went and saved the situation,” Mrs Nwawe said.
“There’s no need for people to be apprehensive because whatever happened to Niger Republic has nothing to do with Nigeria. Those people are not operating in Nigeria but Niger Republic. Tangaza is a boundary community, despite people alleged that they saw strange people in the area with their camels, donkeys and wives, it is not in Nigeria.
“But we’re not taking anything lightly because we have mobilised more conventional policemen to make sure the people did not infiltrate into Nigeria,” Mrs Nwawe said.
She said the police were doing their job in Sokoto State but cannot go into another country to arrest criminals.
“If someone commits a crime and ran to Niger Republic, we liaise with the authorities to bring back the suspect here, especially when the crime was committed on Nigerian territory,” said the police spokesperson.https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/298391-police-speak-on-strange-armed-group-sighted-in-sokoto.html

PoliticsGroup Asks Governor Obiano To Resign For Endorsing Buhari by ManirBK(op): 10:31am On Dec 01, 2018
A factional group of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), calling itself the Authentic All Progressives Grand Alliance (AAPGA) has asked Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, to resign as governor and chairman, Board of Trustee of APGA for endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari for the 2019 elections without recourse to the leadership and members of the party.

The National chairman of the group, Chief Jerry Obasi, told reporters on Friday in Abuja that the governor has brought APGA to ridicule, odium and made it a laughing stock in the eyes of reasonable Nigerians.

He lamented that Governor Obiano endorsed President Buhari during a former president Goodluck Jonathan’s book lunch “My Transition Hours” in Abuja recently despite APGA having Gen. John Gbor rtd.as its presidential candidate for 2019 poll.

They accused the governor of anti-party activities and breach of Article 22(2D) of the party’s constitution deposited with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Obasi said the original and foundational ideology of APGA is that it should be inclusive and guarantee the rights of members to express themselves in line with democratic principles regretting that it is obvious from prevailing circumstances that the party has derailed and lost the moral compass that endeared it to marginalized Nigerians.

“There is urgent need therefore, for loyal and genuine members of the party to embark on a programme that would bring back the party to the original ideas. This programme would involve the reconciliation and unification of all those that fought through thick and thin to ensure that APGA serves the purpose of political emancipation of all oppressed people,” he said.

He said the new APGA intends to reach out to all those who have suffered injustice, impunity and deprivation with a view to refocusing the party in line with the original ideology and principles.

He also asked the National Chairman of APGA, Dr. Victor Ike Oye, to resign his position having failed to improve the fortunes and good image of the party.

“The complaints from Imo, Abia and Anambra State chapters of APGA, to mention but a few, detailing the exchange of bribes in foreign and local currencies, are too weighty to be swept under the carpet,” he said.

None of the officials of APGA were willing to respond, as they neither picked their phone calls nor reply SMS asking for their reactions.

1. Because election is near, does it mean Buhari shouldn't do anything again? He should suspend every project until after election?
2. People complaining, did you vote for Buhari 2015?
3. We have agreed that he is doing it because election is near, now let me ask. Why didn't PDP use election periods for the past 16years to make Nigeria a better place? All the things Buhari is doing now, if PDP did it because election is near, we would av been miles ahead of where we are now. They should all continue crying.

President Muhammadu Buhari has convened a meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC).
The meeting will hold on November 29 at N’Djamena, the Chadian capital.
Mr Buhari convened the consultative meeting in his capacity as Chairman of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the LCBC.
Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesperson, said in a statement Wednesday that the one-day meeting would review the security situation in the areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency and adopt measures to enhance the capacity of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to meet the challenges of securing the areas.
Mr Buhari convened the meeting after his visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, to declare open the annual Chief of Army Staff conference.
The conference earlier billed for Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday, was moved to Maiduguri following a resurgence of attacks by the terror group, Boko Haram.
The insurgents recently attacked military formations in Metele in Southern Borno leading to high casualty figures.
Reports say Boko Haram are taking advantage of the withdrawal of Chadian troops along its border with Nigeria.
Mr Buhari had earlier sent his Minister of Defence, Manir Dan-Ali, for consultations with the Chadian authorities.
“The presidents of the LCBC member countries of Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and the Central African Republic have been invited to attend the meeting,” Mr Adesina said.
He also said the president of Benin Republic, “a troop-contributing country, has also been invited to attend”.

PoliticsSenate Wants Tariff On Alcohol, Tobacco Suspended by ManirBK(op): 10:52am On Nov 28, 2018
The demand was sequel to the adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Finance.

The committee considered a motion, “The urgent need to review the excise tariff increment in order to save local distillers of beverages from looming extinction” – which was moved by Ben Uwajumogu (APC, Imo North) in May.

He had stated that the current excise duty paid by the locally produced beverages sector stands at 20 per cent across board. But under the approved excise duty tariff hike by the federal government, it is fixed at 67 per cent; a more than 300 per cent increase.

The federal government had in March, rolled out a proposal for the upward review of excise duty on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products.

The approval, according to the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, was given by President Muhammadu Buhari, and would take effect from June 4, 2018.

Mrs Adeosun in a statement said the president also granted a grace period of 90 days to all local manufacturers before the commencement of the new excise duty regime.

EFCC denies receiving N10mn from Ganduje
She also stated that there would be no increase in excise duty of other locally produced goods and that the new excise duty rates would be spread over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020 in order to moderate the impact on prices of the products.

In the committee’s report, presented by the chairman, John Enoh, it said the discussion with stakeholders should pave the way for consensus on the implementation .

It also said an increment of not more than 50 per cent should be adopted, “as it becomes necessary for the Federal Government to increase the tariff in order to boost revenue as the rate will provide more leniency to the affected manufacturers and give more hope for the survival of local firms”.

It stated that there is need to increase the import duties of foreign alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in order to give local firms more competitive edge.

The Senate urged the government to sensitise and carry along the producers and consumers of alcohol and tobacco products to understand the need for the increase and its advantage in adding to the economic fortunes of the country.

The lawmakers agreed that if the new excise tariff is allowed to be implemented by the government, it will stand at about 500 per cent after the three years incremental period.

It also said if the tariff is fully implemented without review, it is capable of compelling affected companies that cannot stand with the new rate to either shut down or relocate their full operation to neighbouring countries with favourable and flexible taxation policies for the sector.

President Muhammadu Buhari will today visit Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in an effort to boost the morale of the Nigerian troop fighting the Boko Haram insurgents in the North east geopolitical zone.
Daily Trust reports that all arrangements for the visit have been concluded.

Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmed had on Monday announced on his twitter hadle that the President would be visiting Maiduguri today.

Our correspondent reports that already the advance team of the Presidency has since been dispatched to Maiduguri.

During the visit, it was gathered that the President would declare open the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) annual conference scheduled to hold at the Borno State Government House, Maiduguri.

The COAS conference which attracts the top brass of the Nigerian Army was earlier scheduled for Benin City in Edo State. It was however cancelled following the killing of soldiers by Boko Haram insurgents in Metele.
It was gathered the President would use the visit to meet with Nigerian troop.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has cancelled his trip to Daura, his hometown in Katsina State. The president was to spend five days in Daura, starting from Tuesday.

The House of Representatives yesterday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, to urgently release to the National Judicial Council (NJC) the sum of N110bn appropriated for the judiciary in 2018.
The lawmakers said the directive was in line with Section 81(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which states that “any amount due to the judiciary in the Consolidated Revenue Fund shall be paid and disbursed directly to the National Judicial Council.”
In a motion on the failure of the Minister of Finance to release funds standing to the credit of the judiciary,” sponsored by Aminu Shehu Shagari (PDP, Sokoto), the lawmakers noted that the essence of the constitutional provision was to guarantee the financial and administrative independence of the judiciary.
The lawmakers expressed concern that withholding funds meant for the judiciary might disrupt the efficiency of the judicial arm, and jeopardise its financial obligations to serving and retired judicial officers, as well as to its contractual commitments.

PoliticsN/assembly Delaying Rail Projects – Amaechi by ManirBK(op): 8:50am On Nov 28, 2018
The non-approval of the $30bn foreign loan by the National Assembly is delaying various rail projects across the country‎, Minister of Transport Chubuike Rotimi Amaechi has said.
Amaechi said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the various projects and forwarded the loan request to the legislature but that the non-approval has made it impossible for the projects to take off.

The minister, who spoke when he appeared before the joint Senate Committee on Land Transport and Local and Foreign ‎Debts, said the projects included the Port Harcourt-Enugu-Maiduguri and the Lagos-Kano rail lines.
The joint committee is investigating allegations that the government has abandoned the Port Harcourt-Enugu-Maiduguri rail line and concentrated on the Lagos-Kano axis.

Responding to questions from members of the joint panel headed by Senators Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos) and Shehu Sani (PRP, Kaduna), Amaechi said: “We didn’t abandon any rail project. All the rail projects awarded are there. The truth is that we can’t go and borrow without Senate approval. The Federal Executive Council has awarded the contracts, but we can’t go to work without funds‎, and that has to come when the Senate approves the $30bn loan request.”
‎He said once the projects were completed, movements of cargoes would be done via rail, which would reduce the pressures on Nigerian roads.
Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (APC, Sokoto) sought to know if there was any rail contract ‎awarded that would cut across Sokoto State to which the minister said there was one from Jibiya in Katsina State to Sokoto and Kebbi states.
