PoliticsNigeria Fulfills Financial Obligations To AU, Pays All 2023 Dues by ManirBK(op): 9:28am On Jul 16, 2023
Nigeria has made full payment of its annual contribution to the African Union (AU) for the year 2023.

Adamu Lamuwa, permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs, announced the development while speaking on the sidelines of the 43rd ordinary session of the executive council of the AU in Nairobi, Kenya.

TheCable reported that President Bola Tinubu will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday to participate in the fifth mid-year coordination meeting (5thMYCM) of the AU, the regional economic communities (RECs), the regional mechanisms (RMs), and the AU member states.

Lamuwa said the payment of the 2023 dues demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to its responsibilities as an AU member-state.

The permanent secretary commended Tinubu for being a president who emphasises prompt payment of financial assessments.

Lamuwa, during the executive council meeting of member-states, welcomed the consideration outlook of African countries and the execution rate of AU departments and organs over the past three years, in the budget drafting process.

He also shared Nigeria’s stance on the proposed 2024 budget of the AU.

“Nigeria emphasised the importance of an austerity-driven, results-oriented budget that avoids duplication,” Lamuwa said.

“Accountability and prudent resource management were also highlighted to encourage other member countries to fulfil their financial obligations.”

In addition, he called for synergy among AU organs and departments and also requested that the AU Commission (AUC) reduce travel costs by hosting more meetings at its headquarters in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

The permanent secretary said the ministerial-level meeting, preceding the heads of state’s participation, adopted education as the theme for the AU in 2024.

Lamuwa said the theme aligns with Tinubu’s focus on education as a priority area domestically, adding that this makes his leadership in Nigeria and ECOWAS timely and beneficial.

PoliticsTinubu Orders Manhunt For Plateau, Benue Killers by ManirBK(op): 1:36am On Jul 12, 2023
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to fish out the masterminds of what he called “dastardly acts” of killings in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State and parts of Benue State.

The president, in a statement on Tuesday by his spokesman, Dele Alake, condemned the most recent internecine killings.

Tinubu, who expressed sadness and grief over the latest round of violence in Plateau State, described the festering “reprisal attacks, needless and avoidable bloodletting” among communities in the two states “very depressing”.

He, however, charged the governments of Plateau and Benue States and emergency response agencies to provide support and immediate relief to victims who have been displaced as a result of the conflicts.

He reaffirmed his government’s determination to stamp out violent crimes and all forms of criminalities everywhere in Nigeria.

President Tinubu urged community leaders, religious leaders, traditional rulers, socio-cultural organisations as well as the leadership of Arewa Consultative Forum, Jama’atu Nasril Islam, and Christian Association of Nigeria to work together to help foster genuine and long-lasting peace, rebuild trust and restore harmony to the conflict areas.

“It is most unfortunate that in this orgy of violence, an innocent eight-month-old baby in Farin Lamba community of Vwang District, Jos South Local Government, died in a conflict she knew nothing about.

“A major consequence of perennial conflict is always the tragic loss of innocent lives. To build virile, peaceful and prosperous communities demand tolerance and forgiveness for every perceived wrongdoing,” the president said in the statement titled ‘Plateau Killings: We Must Break This Cycle of Violence’.

it's matter if time Gifted Tinubu will do the needful beyond your imagination
PoliticsHow N400bn Subsidy Saving Can Build 400,000 Boreholes; 13,000 Health Centres by ManirBK(op): 8:58am On Jul 09, 2023
The federal government can build critical infrastructure from the N400
billion it has so far saved in one month following the removal of fuel
subsidy, findings by Daily Trust on Sunday have shown.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, during his inaugural speech
on May 29, announced the removal of fuel subsidy, which
means that market forces would determine the prices of
petroleum products in the country.
The removal immediately increased the price of petrol from
N195 to N540 per litre. Proponents of subsidy removal said
the action would free funds for other critical interventions in
education, health, agriculture, roads and transport, among
others.
They argued that Nigeria spent over N4 trillion on petrol
subsidies in 2022.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the increase in petrol prices
has already led to a hike in the prices of goods. Worst
affected are foodstuff and transportation.
However, over a month after the removal of subsidy, the
federal government is yet to roll out palliatives to cushion the
effect of the removal.
President Tinubu, in his Democracy Day speech to Nigerians,
said the resolve to remove the subsidy “is one decision we
must bear to save our country from going under and take our
resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic
elements.”
Tinubu said he was aware that his decision to remove subsidy
on petrol would impose an “extra burden on the masses,” but
quickly added that it would “free up for collective use, the
much-needed resources, which had hitherto been pocketed by
a few rich.”
“The government I lead will repay you through massive
investment in transportation infrastructure, education, regular
power supply, health care and other public utilities that will
improve the quality of lives,” he said.
Before the subsidy removal, Daily Trust on Sunday recalled that
the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National
Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, had on
February 17, 2023, announced that Nigeria was spending over
N400billion monthly on petroleum subsidies.

He said this at the final cutover ceremony of the NNPC and
the birth of NNPCL at the corporation’s towers in Abuja.
“Today, by law and the provisions of the Appropriation Act,
there is a subsidy on the supply of petroleum products,
particularly PMS, into our country. In current data terms, three
days ago the landing cost was around N315/litre.
“Our customers are here, we are transferring to each of them
at N113 per litre. That means there is a difference of close to
N202 for every litre of PMS we import into this country.
“In computation, N202 multiplied by 66.5 million litres,
multiplied by 30 will give you over N 400 billion of subsidy
every month,” he said.
What one-month’ subsidy saving can do
Daily Trust on Sunday analysis shows that the N400billion
saved in one month from fuel subsidy removal can construct
400,000 boreholes, buy 20,000 Coaster buses or build 13,000
primary health care centres.
In the same vein, the amount can build at least 200 kilometres
of road or procure about 40,000 units of transformers.
Although government projects are mostly given out to
contractors, the computation done by our reporter did not
include all the technicalities involved in contract awarding, it is
based on market values, which every other person can
accomplish within a short time, provided he has the money.
13,000 primary health care centres
Daily Trust on Sunday checks show that Nigeria has five types
of health institutions, according to the National Primary Health
Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
According to the agency, the first category of a health
institution is expected to serve a village or neighbourhood of
about 500 people. The second category primary health clinics
cater for a group of villages or neighbourhoods with a
population of 2,000 to 5,000 people, while the third category is
primary health centres for each of Nigeria’s 774 local
governments. With each having at least 10 wards, over 7,740
of these are expected across the country.
The fourth category refers to general hospitals, which are
managed by state governments and are expected to be
located in each of the 774 local government areas.
The last are tertiary or teaching hospitals managed by the
federal government, with one expected in each of the 36 states
and in the Federal Capital Territory.
Primary health care is a term used to describe a range of
health care providers who work in the community. Any health
care professional who is the first point of contact for the health
system can be a primary health care provider.
Most people visit their GP (sometimes referred to as the ‘local
doctor’) as a first step when they have a health problem that is
not an emergency. The primary health care system also
includes allied health professionals, such as dentists and
physiotherapists.
Primary health care centres are generally situated in
community settings, and are usually the first port of call for
individuals who have health challenges, especially in rural
communities.
Primary health care providers oftentimes work in medical
clinics, community health centres and allied health practices.
Conventionally, primary health care services mainly focus on
diagnosing and treating common health conditions within their
area of expertise.
Subsequently, these service providers assess the urgency of
the medical problem on ground and make referrals to either
general hospital or teaching hospitals, where the patient will
get appropriate and proper treatment. They may also be able
to provide referrals to other medical specialists if required.
Primary health care provides the most viable route towards
achieving health related Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), especially in the aspect of poverty reduction. However,
in Nigeria, many rural dwellers hardly patronise the system due
to its poor state, a reason the executive director of the
National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA),
Dr Faisal Shuaib, recently said the demand for primary health
care services in the country “has remained suboptimal due to
low level of trust in the health system.”
An average primary health care centre in Nigeria carries a
paltry number of 15 to 25 beds while some just contain only 4-
bed space, according to some investigative reports.

Tomorrow they would write to UN and claimed police killed 4 innocent people
CrimePolice Kill Four Gunmen Enforcing Ipob’s Sit-at-home Order by ManirBK(op): 10:27am On Jul 08, 2023
The police in Enugu State, south-east Nigeria, said
they have killed four gunmen who were enforcing a
controversial one week sit-at-home order declared by
a faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of
Biafra (IPOB).
The police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel
Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday
night.
One week sit-at-home
PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Simon Ekpa,
the leader of Autopilot, a faction of the IPOB, had in
a statement on 14 June, announced that there would
be one week sit-at-home in the South-east.
Mr Ekpa, a self-acclaimed prime-minister of Biafra
Republic Government in Exile, said the sit-at-home
would hold from 3 to 5 July and continue from Friday
7 to 10 July.
He would later announce that Sunday 9 July had
been exempted from the sit-at-home days, to allow
residents of the region – which has a high population
of Christians – to worship their God.
But Emma Powerful, the spokesperson of the IPOB
faction led by Mr Kanu, later told PREMIUM TIMES
that the sit-at-home order did not emanate from the
group, but was declared by “criminals” seeking to
frustrate the release of Mr Kanu.
Since 3 July, there had been reports of shootings by
gunmen enforcing the civil action across the five
states in the region.
‘How the gunmen were killed’
Mr Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, said
police operatives serving in Awkunanaw Divisional
Headquarters in the state had, on Friday morning,
dislodged the gunmen when the operatives
intercepted them attempting to snatch a minivan
vehicle from a driver along Agbani Road, Enugu
South Council Area.
The police spokesperson said the operatives foiled the
attempt by engaging the hoodlums in a shootout,
forcing them to abandon the vehicle and “narrowly
escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot
wounds, due to superior firepower of the operatives.”
He said the operatives subsequently recovered the
vehicle, which had blood stains on its seats and other
parts of the vehicle, adding that some arms and
ammunition were also recovered from the attackers
during the operation.
Mr Ndukwe said the operatives would later discover
and recover “bodies of four of the male hoodlums, in
a forest behind G. Ede Filling Station/Seven-Up, at
Awkunanaw, Enugu, where they escaped into.”
Awkunawan is a community in Enugu South Local
Government Area of the state.
The police spokesperson said the discovery of the
bodies followed an “intense manhunt” operation
launched by a combined team of security agencies.
One AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 19 live
ammunition of 7.62 calibres and two bottles of petrol
bomb were among the items recovered from the
hoodlums during the operations, according to the
police.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed
Ammani, has reassured residents of Enugu State that
the police and other security agencies in the state
will not relent in their efforts to secure their lives
and property, Mr Ndukwe said.

TravelN1.54trn Kano-Maradi Railway To Have Over 100 Bridges, 3 Side Camps by ManirBK(op): 9:53am On Jul 08, 2023
There are strong indications that the $2 billion, about N1.54 trillion, Kano-Maradi railway line that links Nigeria and Niger Republic will have over 100 bridges and three side camps among other facilities when completed.

The project which is currently being handled by MOTA-ENGIL NIGERIA is expected to be completed in three years.

Speaking with media men at the Port & Cargo Terminal in Lagos, Mr Nuno Colaco, the company’s logistics manager, explained that the project which was expected to be delivered in three years would have over 100 bridges and three side camps among other facilities of a modern railway line.

Colaco revealed that the project was massive and that about 100 kilometres of the project had been paved ahead of the main construction work.

He further said, It is a 400-kilometre railway, starting from Dutse in Kano and terminating in Maradi in Niger Republic. This is one of the biggest projects to be handled by the Portuguese company.

“We came to Nigeria in 2018 and we are happy that we got this project two years after our arrival. Nigeria is the biggest economy in Africa with huge potential.”

Also speaking, the Customs Controller of Tin Can Island, Mr Adekunle Oloyede, who said that there had been a decrease of cargo throughput at the ports, expressed delight at the sheer size of the Mota-Engil import, saying it was evidence that the Nigerian economy was on the rebound.

PoliticsRe: Billion Naira Dry Ports Lay Waste In Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Katsina by ManirBK(op): 9:36am On Jul 08, 2023
Recommendable observations
PoliticsBillion Naira Dry Ports Lay Waste In Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Katsina by ManirBK(op): 9:35am On Jul 08, 2023
Years after the approval and commencement of the Dry Inland
Ports across the country, most of them are yet to operate
optimally.
The ports, LEADERSHIP Weekend findings reveal, lay waste in
states and communities where billions of naira has been expended
to provide facilities that are meant to aid exp orts.
Investigations show that in many of these communities, the youth
who were promised thousands of jobs still have their hopes high
that these jobs will materialise.
State governments in Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Borno, Plateau and
Oyo made thousands of hectres of land available to the federal
government but poor planning and a lack of coordination between
the ministry of transport, successive state governments and
relevant agencies have made the ports inoperable.
The federal executive council had granted approval for the
establishment of the Inland Dry Ports in March 2006 at six locations
across the country namely Isiala- Ngwa- Abia State; Erunmu Ibadan
– Oyo State; Heipang Jos – Plateau State; Funtua- Katsina State;
Maiduguri – Borno State and Dala, Kano State.
However, Kaduna Inland Dry Port Limited, which was not originally
part of the six approved in 2006, was commissioned by the federal
government in 2018 as the first port of origin for export and port of
destination for import for hinterland and landlocked neighbouring
countries with no sea ports like Niger Republic, Chad, among
others.

The Kaduna Dry Inland Port has been offering skeletal operations as
non-completion of rail lines project to link the port is affecting the
mass movement of containers from the seaports to the dry land,
investigations revealed.
Our correspondent who visited Kaduna Inland Dry Port located in
Kakuri near Railway Station reports that only a few long trucks load
goods from seaports and off load to the dry port per day.
An official of the Kaduna Inland Dry Port who did not want his
name mentioned explained: “In a day, only ten or fifteen trucks load
from seaports in Lagos and bring goods in this port for onward
movement to far northern states. We are not operating fully as it is
supposed to be.”
In a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, the general
manager of Kaduna Inland Dry Port, Rotimi Raimi-Hassan,
lamented the lack of rail lines linking the dry port, saying it is the
major challenge facing the dry inland port operations.
The general manager identified other major challenges confronting
the Kaduna dry inland port. He said, “Since we launched the Kaduna
Dry Inland Port, we have been working perfectly well. Having said
that, we have challenges like customs, railway among others we are
facing.
“On the issue of customs there is no customs template for ICDs to
operate and government should look into it. On the railway issue,
inland dry ports cannot work effectively without rail lines connecting
to them.”
Raimi-Hasaan said, “A dry port must have rail access from the
seaport to dry port so that the transportation of moving goods from
seaports to dry ports will be cheaper. There should be political will
to back up dry port operations in the country.
“We have about 600 direct and indirect staff and workers working
in our port. We have from 300 to 350 containers of goods from
seaports every month to our port here. We welcome the new
administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and we appeal to
him to look into inland dry ports challenges to reposition it.”
The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-
Rufai had in 2017 during the final inspection of the Kaduna Inland
Dry Port before the commissioning said the facility will boost the
country’s export capacity by over $50billion annually.
The port has the capacity to handle 29,000 tonnes of cargoes yearly
and is estimated to generate about 5000 employment opportunities
The general manager of the Dry Port had earlier said the port
stands out as most suitable for international trade facilitation in the
North.
He said aside from being the first dry port in Nigeria, Kaduna Port
stands out as the best in West Africa, with staff strength of persons
having over three decades of maritime experience, matching
knowledge with latest technology.
According to him, the port is a solution provider that has blazed the
trail for other dry ports in the country.
In Plateau State, 17 years after the inauguration of the Jos Inland
Container Depot (JICD), Heipang, in Barki Ladi local government
area by former head of state, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), the project
is yet to commence operation in the state.
Duncan Container Dry Port Limited, the concessionaire, was given a
presidential approval for the construction of Jos Inland Dry Port in
2006.
The JICD covers over 33.9 hectare of land provided for the JICD
from 100 hectares acquired by the state government. When
completed, it will create over 5000 jobs.
The Jos Inland container depot, JICD, suffered a great setback in
2014 when the site was demolished by former Governor Jonah
Jang’s administration in August 2014 before Duncan Maritime
International commenced work again.
In 2021, Plateau State government, under the leadership of
immediate past governor, Simon Lalong, took over ownership of the
Jos Inland Container Depot (ICD) from Duncan Maritime Ventures
Nig. Ltd.
The memorandum of agreement signifying the change in ownership
was signed between the Plateau State government and Chief
Godfrey Bawa, managing director of Duncan Ventures, at a cost of
N2.2 billion based on its economic benefits.
Speaking to our correspondent, Heipang youth leader, Chuwang
Davou, said the presence of the depot will bring food to their
tables, as a lot of youths will be engaged in the value chain.
According to him, their landlords too will benefit, as most of the
houses will be rented out for people coming to do business in
Heipang and its surrounding communities.
He pointed out that the value of their lands will appreciate and it
will open up their villages to international communities and Heipang
will be a hub where stakeholders in dry port business will converge.
Davou appealed to the state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to engage
a qualified concessionaire with a view to completing the project
because of the economic benefits to the people of North Central
zone.
Similarly, the federal government in February 2023 declared Funtua
Inland Dry Port in Kastina State as a port of origin and final
destination for import and export of cargoes.
The port has not been in operation since its declaration as a port of
origin and final destination for the import and export of cargoes in
February this year by the then minister of Transportation, Mu’azu
Jaji Sambo.
But a fact check by this paper on the facility revealed that it is lying
dormant and is only used by some people to store their goods for
some time, as efforts to reach director of the Port failed.
The Funtua Dry Port was first established in March 2006 by the
Federal Executive Council as container freight station and was later
converted to an inland dry port and that this critical transport
infrastructure is based on the strategic framework of build, owning,
operating and transferring (BOOT).
The state permanent secretary in the ministry of Commerce, Musa
Sule, had recently said the state, as part of its contribution to the
project, facilitated 16.2 hectares of land and also paid
compensation to the land owners.
He explained that the step was taken based on the conviction that
when fully operational, the port will create employment for the
immediate community and its environs, support the revenue base
of the state and facilitate trade within and outside the country.
Also, in August 2022, the federal government declared Dala Inland
Dry Port, Kano, as port of origin for export of goods and final
destination for goods brought into the country via the nation’s
seaports.
The then minister of Transportation, Engr. Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, while
making the declaration in Kano on behalf of the federal
government, disclosed that the project was part of federal
government’s reform programme to promote efficient
transportation, decongest the seaports and bring shipping and ports
services closer to importers and exporters.
Sambo said, “In today’s new global economy, speed to the markets
with finished goods and lower shipping costs are the main drivers
more than ever before. The Dala IDP will facilitate this and more.”
On why the project was located in Kano, he said, “The importance
of Kano State as the commercial capital of northern Nigeria with
huge agricultural trade and export volume is well documented.
“The State has a sizeable number of textile and agro-allied
industries, assembly plants amongst others and several
manufacturing industries. It is not only suited but most qualified”.
He equally called on shipping companies, maritime practitioners,
land-locked countries like Chad, Niger and other port users to take
full advantage of the Dala IDP for import and export of their
cargoes.
But part of challenges hampering the full use of the dry ports is the
lack of connection to rail systems.
On linking the railway to the Port, the managing director, Nigeria
Railway Corporation (NRC), Engr Fidet Okhiria, said, “The Board of
NRC has approved track access to anybody or company wishing to
provide the infrastructure, that is the rolling stock to operate on the
track which i hope Dala Inland Dry Port will tap in so that they can
maximise the essence of having rail track into their premises”.
Also, the general manager of the Kaduna Dry Inland Port harped on
the need for incentives to be given to shippers to bring cargo to
Kaduna instead of taking it to Lagos and other seaports in the
south.
He said, “Since 2018, we have not been able to commence full dry
ports. Kaduna is the first full dry port, and others are still coming.
There should be a process by which dry inland ports should
operate. We need at least five locomotives and 100 wagons for us
to operate.
“The shipping companies should encourage shipping activities to
thrive by sending their services to commence documentation
processes for cargo destined for Kaduna Inland dry port by issuing
true bill of lading.
The essence of the dry port is to decongest the ports and bring
shipping services to the internal shippers, this has not been done.
“Most of our customers in the north, particularly in Kaduna and
Kano, do ask the shipping lines that their cargos should be destined
to Kaduna, but the shipping companies said the recognised ports
are Apapa Port and Port Harcourt and they don’t recognise the dry
inland port.”

Some supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have asked
him to consider youths for appointment into various positions
including as ministers in his government to enable him deliver
on his “Renewed Hope” agenda for Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference yesterday in Abuja, National
Coordinator of the Progressive League of Youth Voters for
Tinubu/Shettima, Ambassador Abdul Usman Shuaibu, also
appealed to the president to dialogue with aggrieved groups
for peace and stability of the country.
Shuaibu, who was flanked by other youth leaders in the
country, said “Nigeria is blessed with a lot of talented and
intelligent youths who are barely given the chance or
opportunity to exercise these gifts.

“Thank God President Tinubu has a very good record of
grooming and including youths in governance. Therefore, we
expect him to continue in that line, especially in his
subsequent appointment of ministers, heads of departments
and agencies, board members of federal institutions, etc.”

In a bid to return to the summit of football
refereeing, 115 Nigerian referees have
been selected to undergo a 15-day
intensive training from FIFA referring
instructors.
The training will see a total of 35
participants taking part in the Women
Referees Course, while 40 participants are in
the Futsal Referees Course and another 40
are involved in the Elite Men Referees Course.
It would be recalled that no Nigerian referee
has officiated at the FIFA World Cup while
CAF in the last decade has not considered
any Nigerian referee for the Africa Cup of
Nations. Due to lack of consistency in the
nomination of referees for FIFA and CAF
seminars, Nigerian referees were always
ignored by these football bodies.
Speaking yesterday during a visit by the
instructors, the President of Nigeria Football
Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau called
on FIFA refereeing instructors who are in
Nigeria, to help improve the lot of Nigerian
referees to a level that they would be
regularly considered for major FIFA and CAF
assignments.

“We have our teams regularly taking part in
major competitions in Africa and the world,
and it is always a painful thing seeing
referees from other countries while we
hardly get to see our own compatriots of
the whistle. We want you to take up this
assignment beyond the regular instruction
courses; you should endeavour to
communicate with them all the time,
encourage them, support them and give
them tips that will keep improving them to
get to the top,” Gusau told the FIFA team.
The FIFA instructors, led by Gladys Lengwe
from Zambia, also includes Houssein Ali
Mohamed from Djibouti, Said Nouri from
Morocco and Bento Navesse from
Mozambique. They are in Nigeria to
superintend a Women Referees Course, a
Futsal Referees Course and an Elite Men
Referees Course, all happening between 1st
– 15th July 2023.
The women referees’ course and futsal
referees’ course, which began on Saturday,
will end on Thursday, 6th July, while the elite
men referees’ course will take centre stage
between 9th – 15th July.

PoliticsWe Need Help, Tinubu Tells Bank Of America by ManirBK(op): 5:02pm On Jul 04, 2023
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said
Nigeria needs all the help that it can get
at the moment.
The president said this on Tuesday while
receiving visiting Bank of America officials in
his office at the State House, Abuja.
He expressed confidence that his
administration was on the pathway to
success in spite of the challenges facing the
country.
President Tinubu, in a statement by his
spokesman, Dele Alake, said his government
was committed to instituting reforms that
would engender the sustainable growth
and development of the country.

“We believe we are on the right track so far.
We believe we need all the help we can get,”
the President said as he asked the bank’s
management for support and partnership
that would advance mutual benefits for
Nigeria and the financial institution.
The president said governance and
development challenges facing the country
could not be addressed without fiscal and
institutional reforms.
“21st Century actions on climate change,
finance and innovation are intertwined.
Having a good platform and believing in
innovation will help in undertaking reforms
and tackling the issues.
“This is the largest economy and democracy
in Africa and if we cannot do it, nobody will
do it for us,” he said.
President Tinubu, while stating that no one
could do it alone, made a case for the bank
and other willing financing institutions to
help the country, for instance in partnering
to ensure Nigerian gas compete favourably
in the global market, as a viable source of
alternative revenue.
In his remarks, the leader of the delegation
and President of International for Bank of
America, Mr. Bernard Mensah, expressed
excitement about the initial steps taken by
the new administration, which, he said, is
taking Nigeria back to its rightful place on
the global stage.
He said the bank was willing to assist the
country address its immediate and longer
term challenges not only in the area of
financing but also contributing with ideas.
In company with Mr. Mensah on the visit
were Head of Sub-Saharan Africa of the
bank, Mrs. Yvonne Ike Fasinro, and Head of
Investment Banking Sub -Saharan Africa, Mr.
Chuba Ezenwa.https://dailytrust.com/we-need-help-tinubu-tells-bank-of-america/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&

FoodAbuja Housewives Settle For Carrot Stew As Tomatoes Price Shoots Up by ManirBK(op): 8:02pm On Jul 03, 2023
Some housewives in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Abuja, have stopped using tomatoes for stew and other sauces over rise in cost.

The residents, who made this known in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), said they resorted to using garden eggplants and carrots for stew.

They said garden egg, called ganyen gauta in Hausa, igba in Yoruba and anyara in Igbo, could blend very well with rice in the same manner as tomatoes.

Others said they were exploring pumpkin, pawpaw or traditional soups like white soup and palm fruit soup popularly called banga in place of tomatoes stew.

Mrs Jumai Amodu, a mother of five, said a week without rice with tomatoes stew was unfulfilling for her and the family.

She said rice with stew was a regular on their menu, adding that “there is an unexplainable satisfaction that comes with taking cooked rice and stew.”

The mother of five, however, said with the scarcity and high cost of tomatoes, her family was exploring garden egg stew.

Amodu said, “since tomatoes became very expensive, we decided to use garden egg for stew and it is as sweet as tomato stew.

“The only major difference between garden egg stew and tomatoes stew is the colour. We also use pumpkin stew with rice sometimes and although it has its unique taste, it blends well with rice.”

Mrs Helen Omo, a businesswoman, said although tomatoes stew was an important recipe in almost all homes in Nigeria, its scarcity had made some Nigerians to think of alternatives.

“I went to the market yesterday to get some tomatoes for stew and a sizeable bushel, which costs between N2000 and N2500 was being sold for as much as N6500.

“I did not bother to haggle the price because it was way beyond my budget
,” she said.

Mr Chinedu, an entrepreneur, told NAN that he enjoyed taking rice with pepper soup or white soup.

The prices of all food stuff have gone up but that of tomatoes is outrageous probably because it is tomatoes off-season.

Besides being expensive, it is very scarce and as a result we decided to explore other recipes,
he said.

Umar Adamu, a tomatoes retailer in Nyanya market, said he has stopped retailing tomatoes for some days due to low patronage.

He said customers were not patronising him because of the high cost.”

Mrs Rukkaya Umar, Chief Executive Officer, Abraks Farm Produce Nigeria Limited, said the major reason for scarcity of tomatoes was high cost of fertiliser.

According to her, many tomato farmers do not grow it because they cannot afford fertiliser, adding that fertiliser was critical to its growth.

Umar also said reliance on seasonal farming was one of the reasons for the scarcity, adding that it was tomatoes off-season.

“Most farmers in Nigeria still do seasonal farming and that is contributing greatly to scarcity of farm produce particularly in their off-seasons,” she said.

NAN reports that a sizeable basket of tomatoes which hitherto sold for about N10,000 now sells for about N35,000 while big baskets cost more.
