PoliticsFG Opens Workshops For Nigerians To Convert Vehicles To Autogas by ManirBK(op): 5:27pm On Jul 20, 2023
The Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), says it has built workshops across the country to assist Nigerians convert their petrol-powered vehicles to autogas.

Dr Bayero Salih-Farah, Director-General of the institute, said this at a news conference on Thursday in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said that the institute has been working on the project for a year now and is ready to commence the conversion in the next two to three weeks.

Salih-Farah explained that the transport institute had been working in partnership with some manufacturers of the conversion kits which would be used at its workshops to enable Nigerians to have cheaper conversion from PMS to autogas.

We have sensitised relevant stakeholders across the country at different fora on the need for Nigerians to migrate from the use of PMS to gas.

“Gas is very cheap than petrol, it is also cleaner and convenient; Nigerians will be able to save a lot of money when they convert their vehicles from petrol to autogas.

The cost of transport will come down drastically because the money required to refill a tank using an autogas will be 40 per cent lower than the money required filling a tank using petrol
,” he said.

Salih-Farah said the use of autogas would also reduce environmental pollution in the country substantially and appealed to Nigerians to take advantage of the initiative.

Meanwhile, the DG said the agency would partner with the National Information Technology Agency on knowledge sharing on some major projects of the institute.

He said that efforts have been intensified to make the school the leading transport and logistics institute in Africa. (NAN)

EducationBirmingham City University Appoints David Mba As Vice-chancellor by ManirBK(op): 5:12pm On Jul 20, 2023
Professor Mba , who is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise, University of the Arts London (UAL), will take up his new role on October 1, 2023 and will replace Professor Philip Plowden, who is retiring after six years.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Mba said: “I am incredibly excited by the opportunity to take on the leadership of BCU at a pivotal moment for the University, as we begin work to define – and then deliver – our significant ambitions for the next decade. BCU has grown hugely in recent years, in a city which itself has been transformed, providing a powerful base from which we can accelerate towards 2030.

“My priority will be to ensure that everything we do focuses on unleashing the potential of our students, ensuring a consistent focus on their experience, alongside recognising, celebrating and further developing the talent of our staff. By getting that right, we will also meet the needs of the regional and national economy, something that BCU – as a powerful civic University – is uniquely placed to deliver.”

Professor Mba’s appointment was welcomed by both the University’s new Chair of the Board of Governors, Anita Bhalla, and BCU’s Chancellor, Sir Lenny Henry.

Ms Bhalla , who oversaw the appointment, said: “I am delighted to have secured such an outstanding talent to lead BCU in the years ahead. David brings a wealth of experience and expertise, as well as a determination to build on BCU’s many successes with a razor-sharp focus on ensuring our students have every opportunity to achieve everything they aspire to for themselves.

“There is a great deal to do to ensure we achieve BCU’s fullest potential and David takes on a university that achieved a huge amount under the leadership of Professor Philip Plowden. I want to thank Philip for his enormous work over the past six years, during which time BCU’s student community grew from 23,000 to 31,000, and the University has become an ever more powerful presence in our city and further afield.”

Sir Lenny Henry, the celebrated actor, writer and activist, who has been BCU’s Chancellor since November 2016, said: “David’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor is a very welcome development for BCU’s talented and diverse community. It is a huge role at an ambitious and growing institution, and David will bring to it his track record in advocating for social justice – including on the Hamilton Commission and the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation – as well as his own personal insight into ensuring diversity means opportunity and success for everyone who comes through our door.

PoliticsPeter Obi Failed To Show He Scored Majority Votes, INEC Tells Court by ManirBK(op): 10:21pm On Jul 18, 2023
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has argued that Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, failed to show how he scored the majority of lawful votes during the 25 February presidential election.

Mr Obi, who came third in the election, had filed his petition at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja to challenge the outcome of the polls on the grounds of allegations of electoral fraud, among other alleged irregularities.

He urged the court to nullify President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the poll.

He also called on the court to either declare him the winner of the election or order a fresh poll.

Mr Obi and his party, LP, alleged that Mr Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were not qualified to vie for Nigeria’s presidency.

They alleged Mr Tinubu was convicted of drugs-related crimes and forfeited $46,000 in the US.

They also accused Mr Shettima of double nomination by their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petitioners contended at the trial of the case that Mr Tinubu was not duly elected by the majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.

Mr Obi called 13 witnesses to back his claims.

The five-member panel of the court led by Haruna Tsammani had ordered parties to the case to exchange their final addresses at the end of the trial.

In its final written address, INEC, through its lead lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud, said MrObi’s petition “lacks merits.”

Responding to allegations of Mr Shettima’s double nomination, Mr Mahmoud, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the APC had, in a letter dated 6 July 2022, received on 13 July 2022 by INEC, withdrawn his candidacy for Borno Central Senatorial District to clear the way for his nomination as Mr Tinubu’s running mate.

He clarified that Mr Shettima’s voluntary withdrawal preceded his nomination as Mr Tinubu’s vice presidential pick.

Also addressing the issue of Mr Tinubu’s alleged trafficking of narcotic drugs in the US, Mr Mahmoud said, “There was no criminal charge, sentence or conviction to support the allegation of criminal conviction or forfeiture,” referencing a letter from the US government tendered during the defence.

He added that “the alleged order of forfeiture being that of a foreign court is not registered in Nigeria to be enforceable”.

The forfeiture order made by Judge John Nordberg of a United States District Court on 4 October 1993 “is in fact over 20 years since the alleged order was made,” Mr Mahmoud said, referencing Mr Tinubu’s defence in the case.

On the issue of INEC’s failure to upload polling units results of the presidential election to its Result View Portal in real-time on 25 February, Mr Mahmoud said that electoral officers “could not transmit” the image of the results to the IReV portal “due to the technical glitch that occurred on the e-transmission application hosted by Amazon Web Services…, this…technical glitch… was eventually resolved.”

INEC ‘s sole witness had, during his testimony, tendered the Amazon Cloud Trail in support of the claim that there was a technical glitch on the commission’s portal during the Presidential poll.

Mr Mahmoud said the evidence of INEC’s sole witness, Lawrence Bayode, an assistant director at the commission’s ICT department, “was uncontroverted.

Mr Bayode, during his testimony, stated that he was one of the persons who designed the INEC e-transmission system and helped resolve the technical glitch that occurred on election day.

“Petitioners neither pleaded nor demonstrated at trial any unlawful votes of the 2nd respondent (Mr Tinubu) to be discounted from the computed scores of the parties.

“… And did not present any lawful vote to be added to their own. This clearly shows…failure to lead any evidence to support same.”

25 per cent votes in FCT

On Mr Obi’s contention that Mr Tinubu ought not to be declared the winner of the election for failing to score 25 per cent of lawful votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the presidential election, the commission said, “This clearly has nothing to do with lawful votes or unlawful votes”.

It noted that the issue “is clearly one of interpretation of the relevant constitutional provisions.”

Mr Mahmoud added in the INEC’s final address that Mr Obi failed to “lead credible evidence” to aid his case.

He said there was no “mandatory obligation prescribed by the Electoral Act” for INEC “to electronically transmit and collate results of the election…or to fully upload same on IReV before collation of results…”

In the court filing dated 14 July, Mr Mahmoud said, “The evidence presented by the petitioners (Mr Obi and LP) failed to make out a case that the 2nd and 3rd respondents are not qualified to contest the election.

“Section 134(2) of the constitution only requires a candidate to have scored the highest number of votes cast and at least one-quarter of the votes cast in two-thirds of all the States in the federation and the FCT as an aggregate of 37 States.

“The petition for want of evidence deserves to be dismissed and accordingly dismiss same.”

`
A Divisional Police station in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State came under attack by unknown gunmen, early Tuesday morning.

Although no officer was reported killed during the attack, one of them was said to have been shot and is currently receiving treatment.

The gunmen also succeeded in carting away arms and ammunition.

A local hinted that the assailants stormed the unfenced police station at about 2 am with a Toyota Sienna bus, shouting “Release Nnamdi Kanu,” “No Nnamdi Kanu, no peace.”

“They came through Eha-Amufu and left through the same axis but it’s not possible they got to Eha-Amufu township or crossed to Nkalagu, otherwise they would have been encountered by the soldiers in that area. It’s possible they went through Aguamede to Benue state,” the source said.

The Enugu State Police Public command is yet to issue a statement on the reported attack.

PoliticsTinubu Orders Review Of N8,000 Palliative After Public Outcry by ManirBK(op):
In response to widespread public criticism and concern, the Tinubu
administration has announced a revision of the N8,000 cash
transfer program intended to provide relief to vulnerable
households affected by the recent removal of petrol subsidy.
Presidential spokesman, Dele Alake in a statement on Tuesday said
the President’s commitment to dialogue with Nigerians and
prioritize their welfare and security under the Renewed Hope
Agenda has prompted this swift action.
Recall that following the decision to halt the fuel subsidy, the
Federal Government had proposed to implement a conditional cash
transfer initiative, which would have granted N8,000 monthly for six
months to 12 million households among the poorest of the poor.

However, the plan was met with a barrage of criticism, with many
expressing ill-informed concerns and doubts about the program’s
effectiveness.
Recognizing the importance of addressing public sentiment and
fostering inclusivity in policy-making, President Tinubu has heeded
the voices of the people and instructed an immediate review of the
cash transfer program.
The President emphasized that the cash program is just one part of
a broader range of relief measures designed to ease the burden on
Nigerians resulting from the subsidy removal.
In addition to the revision of the cash transfer program, the
President has directed the unveiling of the entire gamut of
government palliative packages to Nigerians
Alake said “you will agree with me that it has become part of the
culture of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to
constantly dialogue with Nigerians who voted him into office. The
President covenanted with Nigerians that their welfare and security
will be topmost in the Renewed Hope Agenda of his government.
“In the last few days, the conventional and new media platforms
have become awash with stories of the government intending to
embark on conditional cash transfer to vulnerable households
mostly affected by the painful but necessary decision to remove
subsidy from petrol.
“The story has been widely reported that the Federal Government is
proposing to give 12 million households from the poorest of the
poor N8,000 monthly for a period of six months as government
palliative to reduce the discomfort being experienced by Nigerians
consequent upon subsidy removal.
“A lot of ill-informed imputations have been read into the
programme by not a few naysayers. The administration believes in
the maxim that when there is prohibition, there must be provision.
Since subsidy, the hydra-headed monster threatening to kill the
economy, has been stopped, government has emplaced a broad
spectrum of reliefs to bring help to Nigerians.
“While it should be noted that cash programme is not the only item
in the whole gamut of relief package of President Bola Ahmed
Tinubu, as a listening leader who has vowed to always put
Nigerians at the heart of his policy and programme, the President
has directed as follows:
“That the N8,000 conditional cash transfer programme envisaged
to bring succour to most vulnerable households be reviewed
immediately. This is in deference to the views expressed by
Nigerians against it.
“That the whole gamut of palliative package of government be
unveiled to Nigerians.
“Immediate release of fertilisers and grains to approximately 50
million farmers and households respectively in all the 36 states and
the FCT.
Alake said the President further assures Nigerians that the N500bn
approved by parliament to cushion the pain occasioned by the end
of subsidy regime will be judiciously utilised.
According to him, the beneficiaries of the reliefs shall be Nigerians
irrespective of their ethnic, religious or political affiliation.
He said President Bola Tinubu has promised to always prioritize the
wellbeing of Nigerians and he is irrevocably committed to the vow.
A number of decisions taken so far by this administration have
buttressed this stance.
“You will recall that the President took a similar decision after
listening to complaints from the business community/stakeholders
about burdensome taxes, particularly multiplicity of taxes they are
made to experience.
“This warranted the signing of four (4) Executive Orders cancelling
some classes of taxes, while suspending the implementation dates
of others.
“In addition, the President has also set up a Tax Reform/Fiscal
Policy Committee to bring up recommendations that will engender
a wholesome fiscal environment for the country and remove anti-
business barriers,” he said.
He assured Nigerians that President Tinubu will continue to be a
listening leader whose ears will not be dull to the views expressed
by the citizenry.
The President believes government exists to cater for the interest
of the people and he has demonstrated this so clearly.
