@rhymz..... 1. The primaries held my parties that IBB cancelled, especially that produced Y'ardua deserved to be cancelled. At a time when we were calling for free and fiar elections, there were widespread irregularities and money for votes accusations. IBB wanted a clean slate and a new order, and not only did he cancell the primaries and ordered new ones, he also suspended some politicians of the old order. Nigeria had no problem with that 2. Abiola did not influence the cancellation. It's an outright lie that you guys were peddling again. Abiola, did not even want to run by then, because few years before then, he lost his first wife Simbi, of whom it was said that did not want Abiola in Politics. 3. Aside from that Abiola was said to have even gone to see Babangida to get him to swear he was serious with the transition to Civil rule before contensting. He had opined that it was not worth it if Banbangida his friend was not sincerely going to hand over to civilian government, then he won't waste his time. 4. In addition, if MKO could beat the strongest Northern Candidate, Babagana Kingibe and the second strongest Jerry Gana stepped down for him, then what are you saying. He won fiar and square in an open convention in JOS. rhymz: Obviously, you are the one that needs a history lesson on June 12. Abiola would not have even come up if IBB his friend and now foe did not cancel the first presidential primaries which he did not participate in and Musa Yaradua won squarely. It is believed that he incited his friend, IBB to annul the initial Presidential primaries of both NRC and SDP and ban all the contestants to give way for him to contest knowing very well that should Musa Yaradua contest again in the SDP presidential primaries, he Abiola wont stand a chance. |
They were not born..... fmgold: He won the election not based on ethnicity or religion, but by GOODWILL. Maybe nairalanders were too young to remember. We will never have the opportunity to vote for such a personality again in this country, neither will we have such a sentimental and violence free elections ever again, thanks to Babangida who made it look like only the north can rule this country and everyone now thinks about presidential rotation that never crossed our mind in 1993 |
@ Katsumoto, It's unfortunate that I got into this topic late and you've enlightened her about ITT. I had thrown her a challenge to explain the ITT situation; even with your story, let her tell us how Abiola ran Nigeria aground with ITT as alleged... The thing is, I doubt if Kobojunky and many of the NLrs posting negative critism of Abiola were born in 1993, at best in their panties. The laziness that will not let them research and furnish themselves with balanced view information is what is killing NL. How can someone ridiculously attribute ITT to NITEL's failures.....still beats my imagination...... Katsumoto: Abiola was vice president of ITT Africa and EMEA and CEO/Chairman of ITT Nigeria between 1972 and 1988. ITT was an American conglomerate that had a global presence. |
Madam, I challenge you or any one here to tell the story of ITT. Tell us how Abiola took away the futures of millions of Nigerians and take Nigeria's IT infrastructure, which you said is still struggling........ Lest my conclusion are these; 1. You're simply saying what you don't know 2. Drawing wrong conclusion from faulty assumptions 3. simply joining the bandwaggon in peddling lies and falsehood...... Kobojunkie: He never did that. In fact he did the opposite, the took away the futures of millions of Nigerians. Abiola is the reason why in the 21st century, Nigeria's IT infrastructure is still struggling to catch up with countries like india, Egypt etc. |
I wish........ I'm still a very young man, and will wish to one day contribute my quota to my state positively... I guess I've started...... purpose100: Mapet= Ogeni Aregbesola. |
O-pon Imo :lollateef4me: What's the name given to this 'laudable initiative' jare ? Is it O-learning ,O-curriculum or O-education ? |
1. For the first time I'm seeing a balanced, analytical and coincise submission looking at the pros and cons. 2. See my additions to your submistion in blue emiye: This is a laudable initiative. !!!!!(I like your analysis, but I'll have love you to do a 3-scenario case analysis. Be that as it may, there are ingenious ways of covering the cost and not that the 10billion is done at once. There is the option of the private sector partnership, support from government contractors, donor agencies, Company CSRs etc. I believe it is important that we start and take care of teething problems along the line than fold arms and do nothing.........) |
1. Not in all cases, many of these comes with dual charging, so you can use solar to charge it as well. 2. Pls where is "Ikirin"..., so because you travelled from Okuku to Osogbo and didn't see light means they are perpertually out of power? Abeg bros, I am from Osun state as well and I know those places pretty well....there is electricity in 3 places you mentioned. Occassional power failures can be said which is another issue. salakobaba: They will also need electricity to charge those tablets, the last time I saw electricity here in Iwo is about a week+, I travelled through Okuku, Ikirin and Osogbo yesterday and I didn't see light in any of those places (though this is a Naija issue), if he shouldn't installed desktop in libraries because of electricity (according to you) where would they get the light to charge there tablets, generator? Students are studying in an uncomfortable environment and the best thing to do for them is to give them ipads that will eventually be turned to games and browsing gadgets, 100 students for a test run after months of the promise, very soon he'll come out and say it's suspended because they didn't handle it well or we're still coming to other students. Hmmmmm almost 2 years now, only time will tell. |

Where in the report was Ipads mentioned. You are making a wrong assumption. Even in countries with worse power problems, this project is on course. Some of these tablet are solar powered purpose100: Have they thot about how to power those 'ipads'? because at least 90% of those schools lack power supply. And when you factor in the erratic power supply by PHCN,how will the students charge the 'ipad'? Generators? |
...and your point is...? you've simply made a %&*# reasoning kodebin: When Comp Science Students in The University Cant get Access to Computers for Programming,, Secondary School Students get a Lappy.. |
Library is good and both are complementary. Bontee: We don't need movable infrastructure as a library can serve those purpose when in school and after school. In my local library here you can actually go to the library and borrow these devices for use inside the library. If you have to take the tablets back after the students passes out then you defeat the purpose of the whole thing. |
Good questions. these are simple teething challenges, some of which the testing periods with the 100s will find out. If they find their ways to computer village, they will be useless as the tablets will be customized specifically to Osun state requirements saxywale: This project is NOT sustainable. We would start seeing the tablets in computer village. Also on my mind are broken screen, faulty keypads, virus, faulty RAM e.t.c |
The internation organizations are actually looking for states and donor agencies to partner with the initiative. I don't see any "starting from the scratch here". Osun state is probably working with some agencies or consultants on this project, so I think what they are simply doing is customizing. Yes we need modern libraries and schools, but if you consider the capital cost of these initiatives, then you certainly have to prioritize. These things may require lots of strategic planning. For me I think states government should even unbundle some of the schools in their custody to missions and private sectors and they seemingly are not even running them as profitable ventures. Trust me, these laptops come cheaper than the ebook reader..... read more on the OLPC. These nare not Ipads, these are learging specific tablets. Parents are at liberty to buy the fancy ones for their kids. If you're asking for the benefits, I think you answered that with the underlined The idea is actually coming from a well thought out planning session in the Osun Educational Summit, OLPC and the MDG...... Bontee: This is a misplaced priority in my opinion as international organisations already took care of all these tablet or laptop stuffs. We have the classmates pc's and one laptop per child program which they could actually partner to do stuffs like this. Why start this from scratch when you can partner and customize this stuff to suit whatever stuff you want for the students in osun state. |
Wrong information. 1. OLPC is not an FG initiaitive, but Global NGOs pursuing the MDG initiative and the FG was invited to support. 2. The FG, from OBJ's government actually did well in pushing the initiatives to many states and regions, its only that we've not gotten governors, local govt chairmen to continue 3. I know the Zinox, Omatek and some nigerian computer assemblers have also donated to the project My question to you is "What are the best devices to learn computing?"
It's only in Nigeria that stupidity is hailed as an 'initiative'. The OLPC (one laptop per child) by FG is still very fresh in our memory. If the governor of Osun state is really serious about computer education. Why doesn't he set up computer equipped libraries in some selected schools. Or establish computer equipped laboratories at various locations in the state. My.first question to Governor aregbesola is how many tablet he intends to buy considering the number of students and how he intends to sustain this. My second question to the governor is whether these tablets are the best devices to learn computing. Sometimes I wonder who advise these our leaders sef. It's so disappointing.
|
@emmasege, I'd rather we stay on the topic of discussion that you to vent your anger on Aregbesola overdoing things, not partnering with FG and wanting to be independent; else you've not said anything wrt the discussion at hand emmasege: Thank u my broda, i happen to come from that axis as well. I personally don't have any interest in his policies because he tries to "over-do" things or better put he takes things to the extreme. So much was promised but with little or nothing to show for it, and yet propaganda would not let us rest. what again baffles me about this man is that he seems to forget the yoruba adage that says "mo ja mo sa la fi nmo akinkanju l'oju ogun i.e. a valiant soldier is one who knows when to fight and when to retreat. I have seen other ACN govs including Fashola and Oshiomole eulogising/fraternising with the FG when duty demands. I even heard Amosun appreciating FG/president recently for giving them the approval to carry out a certain project, but this is not the case with our own aregbe who seems to be more catholic than the pope i.e more ACN than tinubu himself. Has he forgotten that Osun is not and can't be self-sufficient like Lagos. I just hope he's able to deliver at the end of the day, otherwise he would have succeeded in alienating Osun from Abuja while he flees to Lagos where he came from. |
Gbaade, 1. "Can this initiative be sustained?" is a good question. Yes it can if we collectively put in the required drive. The original proponents of the initiative are leveraging on donations from world bank, IMF, Federal and state government, private sectors and individuals like you or I. If a government cannot afford to spend about 20k per student in a space of 3yrs, then what social benefit should they get? besides states governments have been paying for WAEC, NECO etc exams since 1999 todate...... 2. What you call crappy waste of money is identified in the MDG as one of the ways to bridge the knowledge gap between the school children in the advance countries and the 3rd world. Please google "Did you know? and watch some of the stats and idea gbadexy: Sincerely speaking, this is a misplaced priority. |
Good thinking. I hope with the test, they collect such data, especially list of sites visited during the test, hours of usage per day, battery durability etc... these are the things that will form the areas of improvements Zeus Zuco: Hmmmm not bad I see it as a form of e-learning one major suggestion should be these tablets should be customized in a way students can't play games with them, watch movies etc. Music is allowed and when browsing certain websites are prevented from opening. Hence the aim would be deafeated. |
The stocked library that has been there since the 80s, what happened to them. There are no guarantees, and we can't continue to do the same thing and expect different results, else we become idi.ots. We need to try new approaches, new and better ways of doing things and getting better results Onyenna: Seconded....... This is the best idea.... very good library full of computers to meet the student needs instead of buying tablets year in, year out...... Simple..... |
You're right....they are cheap, affordable for the government and we have to start one way or the other. unfortunately people don't realize how we need to invest in knowledge development in our school children. Yes with hurdles, and those are milestones to improve the initiative. all4naija: Indeed, if these tablets are connected at cheap price they become useful tools in acquiring knowledge. We are living in information age. It is a very good thing but with some hurdles. |
I think you're simply naive...... we shouldn't resort to blaming our leaders all the time for this sake of it, especially for something we don't understand...... "What would studednt use computer tablet for in secondary school" is a very ridiculous question. If you have a tablet yourself, what is more important? the tablet or the apps that allows you to do the necessary and desirable things. The article/report says these tablets will be loaded with necessary apps that addresses the identified learning gaps i.e. curriculum, ebooks, subjects, past questions. I think some of you guys are erroneously thingking this is Ipad3...... these are just customized stripped-down version of the original thing. As far back as Y'ardua days, the proponent/NGOs were looking at a $100 alj harem: Misplaced priority, confused set of leaders |
To be honest, I think you should check what you call stup.id, becos your alternative is even the more stup.id. When you're the world is moving towards ubiquitos computing, mobility and quick access, you're talking about some big box? Please....... spade: I think a wiser initiative would have been to purchase these computers as desktops, for the school libraries. |
Madam, Humour me. 1. What makes it not an Initiative? (short of asking you to go familiarize yourself with the meaning) In fact you sound confused when trying to be logical. What money will a government use for Initiatives? Is there any rule that forbid's government use of tax-payers money? 2. I think equity in this context demands you unwramp some of your seeming suggestions which are largly vague and not specific. "Improving Educations itself" specifically how? Name other alternatives? Point is when you decide to look at issues like these in isolation, then you come with half-baked and not thorougly processed assumptions. This is beyond typing in haste and I dare say hate, just becos you don't like Aregbesola. 3. Do you know this model is being done in countries like Kenya, Rwnda, Mynar, Nicaragua, Madagascar, Paraguay, Iraq, Napal, Afghanistan, Peru, Uruguay etc for starters. what is common to all these countries = 3+rd world 4. Do you know this model is actually part of the MDG? Let me give you an example. When India started their IT/Internet penetrance as part of the MDG, they gave internet free of charge to all women for 5yrs...... 5. I believe you have good suggestions and intentions, especially looking at the underlined. But how you see this initiative and well equipped library as alternative, beats my imagination. Library and this laptop per child initative are actually complimentary. They can't replace each other. 6. Many NGOs and government bodies are encouraged to either donate or actually do this project in their domain. I think you need to familiarize yourself with the education aspirations of the MDG and initiatives to make it achievable. Just blasting intiatives in sheer ignorance is down-right low. Kobojunkie: This is an initiative? Really? What these kids, and tax-payers now need is for Government to spend already limited resources, not on IMPROVING EDUCATION ITSELF but purchasing Laptops for each and every student? So giving out about 100,000 tablets, bought with tax-payer money, is now considered an initiative? |
I'm sorry I have to say this all again. I keep seeing NLrs that have purposely refused to reason, and some jump into the ship of a not well thought out arguement; may be because the first few postings did same. I will do two things here; 1. I will go back to page 1 and start deconstructing some arguements 1-by-1. Thank God it's my lunch hour 2. I'll tell you how this initiative is actually a global initiative with the global goal of connecting every school and part of the MGD well I can only laff and the arrogance with which some people display ignorance.... |
@Bros Slimark and Olafolarin, You guys have done good justice to the Havard profile kite jare. What are we talking about? Jeff Skillings of the "Enron" saga was from Havard Business School and the gyst was that he had helped his Havard/Authur Andersen pps into Enro and they chopped the pls to bankcruptcy. In serious climes, Oteh should be discussing refunds of all moneys recklessly spent by now, yet we have some ridiculous NLrs talking about witchhunting. A CEO was forced to resign for questionable expense tickets and underhand payment to his girlfriend/contractor; something that is like given here. For me if our value system is not salvaged from the further corrosion it's persistently going through, then we are toast. We need to be taking all the corrupt officials to the cleaners, else the country will be so corrupt, a revolution will rise up one day and there will be mass state execution to save the country. slimark: Being an alumnus of a high profile university is not a yardstick of not being corrupt. If she was innocent of the bribery and financial misappropriation saga, she could have acted proactively by crying out to all and sundry, even if it demands her resigning her position honorably....That is wot people of integrity do. Nigeria is so badly infested with anti progressive virus called corruption that the credibility of an average Nigerian are always questioned. We should not subject ourselves to celebrate the stance of any politician in Nigeria like Ms Oteh who think because she is a woman, she can't be capable of committing such crime "what a man can do, a woman does it best" olafolarin: Oteh made some gravious mistakes that is unexpected from someone with harvard degree. |
I remember telling someone that when she decided and took Hembe to the cleaners, she unfortunately started a battle that will yet consume her. Her case was reminiscent of OBJ-Atiku saga; OBJ accused Atiku of corruption, Atiku did not bother on clearing himself, but to counter-accuse OBJ of corruption. The draw-back of that approach is that you have tacitly acknowledged what you are accused of. Arunma-Oteh did not clear the air on many of those accussations, and some she tried to do, she was far from convincing. From 80k meal at Nicon, evidenced by the mean-ticket (dumb-ass Havard alumus should have know that the ticket should have been issued in favour of SEC and not her name) 8months in Transcorp, 2 Access Bank secondees on special Projects....please has the board of SEC forgotten the word SACK ?? |
Even the Ndidi that she ochestrated her kick out has results to show, while she has nothing to show....... Lesson - come to equity with clean hands, be professional at all times and we will say of you as was said of the FIRS madam. |
R u a fraud? |
Stop spewing rubbish. Unfortunately in your quest to sound intelligent, you're just turning logic on its head effortlessly. Pray, tell me, how many of all the Ogas in the Multinational Oil Companies (that's even if you're familiar with one, beyond what pictures you see on newspapers and net) have you seen their certificate? In fact I may be stressing your faculty......name 5 MD's of IOC's and tell me their qualification(s) My advise is that don't dabble into what you know NOTHING about, because further attempt to do so gives you away. PortHarcourtBoy: If you scrutinize the credentials of all the big Ogas for the Multinational Oil companies operating in Naija...You go find out sey more than 90% of them na OND and Certifications dem get...Just that dem dey fortunate to get jab those days wey jab sara everywhere |
I tot you started well, then you veered off and joined the crew of NLrs without integrity and morals. First off, let's call it what it is, the guy is simply a fraud. I think we should lay off this sentiments that he has the skills, what skills? can program/code? can fix parts and do networking? what skill will a supposed fresh-grad have that cannot be cascaded to near nothing in the corporate world. In my days in IT, I've had to lead a lot of talented young men and women fresh from school. They come with so much talent and tell even we the seeming veterans new things. That is good, but they still needed to be refined, mentored and coached. I have seen a lot of talented fresh-grads and my nephew who is in his Final year in Babcock is another. So this excuse that he has skills is nothing but plain rubbish. Now to the OP, let me give you some piece of advise; 1. First off, I think you've already answered the lingering question yourself before bringing it on NL. 2. Quit listening to pps on NL with no morals telling you he should continue with the job, Nigeria is too Certificate oriented, he has the necessary skill etc. 90% of these guys have not been in a corporate environment before, most of still struggling with JAMB, NECO etc as can be assessed by the way they type 3. What a foolish thinking, that private sectors don't check! OMG some of you guys are funny. Running background checks is a standard verification proceedure. It's simple a letter to the school claimed is all that is necessary. It could even be written by the press. My wife, once had to report the head office, after HR called her. What happened you may ask? Nigerian Law School did not respond to the request her office sent to verify her qualifications. A Manager left my company to join another company as Finance Controller. His profile was put in the media and was contrary to what we had in our records.......your guess is as good as mine, the guy was out of the job a week later 4. Why will your friend take a place of someone who duly and painstakingly went through the process to get the certificate? There are graduates out there who are qualified for the job; YOUR FRIEND IS NOT QUALIFIED. His stated frustration is unfounded and baseless. Why would he in the first place be vieing for a job that stated first degree as the prerequisite? My advise is simple. 1. Your friend is a fraud. The laws are clear, he can be procecuted and be jailed. 2. Tell him his living on borrowed times and will be found out. 3. HE SHOULD RESIGN WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT. Some companies will not be so soft, his company on discovery may hand him over to the police linearity: The deed is already done! It really does not make any difference if he reported himself or quit the job or if the company finds out later. He is a certificate forger and obtained employment under false pretense. It will be fool-header to report himself to the company now. |
You guys get overtly emotional. I'm not a fan, but I think Linda's model is that she sells gossip. Besides celebrities have to deal with it; soft-selll print media, bloggers will always latch on to any scoop and crumb about them. As much as I'm neutral, I don't subscribe to all these swearing and cursing that reduces people. Taiw: i respect linda for her success but i dont know why she always poke into people's affair.she gossips alot |
..but for me the critical question are these, 1. Did you friend get into the civil service with authentic certificates? 2. Did your friend have any disciplinary issue? No matter the way we spin it, if any of the affected are guilty of the the two above, then their case is difficult to argue. If your friend belongs to the opposition party, do you think the government will trust him? Do you think they'll not be weary of a mole or moles in their cabinet/administration? I'm not too sure, but you're friend cannot serve 2 masters in this case as well. If he wants to be in politics, he either resigns and joins or try not to make his political disposition known till such a time, a government he favours is in power. StateOfMind: Actually, you are not totally wrong about this. A family friend of mine was served with a compulsory retirement letter on friday and i was so shocked wen I was told its because he's suspected to be from the opposition party. |
