Politics › Re: From The Governors, Fashola Is The Only One Fit To Be President. by mapet: 8:47pm On Oct 13, 2012
1. Fashola would have been a monumental failure if there was no well thought-out plan and foundation laid down. Guess what, the results you see fashola churning out now, was made possible by a think-tank put together years ago, Consisting of Ransome-Kuti, Pat Utomi,.....etc
2. Fashola would have been a failure if he had no good team working with him. His former commissioner of Finance (Prince Oyekan) was a guest at a dinner we organized back in school. This man was an embodiment of innovation, knowledge, numbers and direction. He reeled out what they've achieved and also what they are aspiring to achieve.....omo, you'll love to be associated with lagos. I felt so emmotional when he told us about their model of leadership transition. He confessed that their team we fortunate to have evolved from a dynamic crack team of Tinubu's government. He also said it is their intention to do same...i.e leave a lasting legacy in Lagos and much more raise a young generation of leaders who will perform better than they are currently doing. I felt on top of the world, cos when he said he will be delighted to have some of us in the graduating class (Business Generals as we fondly called ourselves then) mentored and prepared to step into leadership position in the state.
3. Fashola would have been a failure if his government is made up of no-gooders. Did you guys know that on Fashola's first term, ACN picked most of his commissioners for him; yet they gave a good account of themselve. On his second term, he told Tinubu to allow him pick most of his cabinet. Guess what, Tinubu oblige him, that he's earned it. Today he has a formidable crack team.

For those of you thoughtless people abusing Tinubu without just cause, you're either ignorant, insincere or simply stupi,d.
1. Going by party tenets, Fashola would ordinarily not have smelt the governoship seat if not for Tinubu. Did you guys know what Tinubu went through to sell the candidature of Fashola to all local governments and wards? It was so bad that ACN almost disintegrated. It took the intervention of Pa Enahoro for people like Afikuyomi to come back to the party, yet he was ACN's monitoring head, despite his name being on ANPP platform for the election

2. Who discovered the leadership qualities in Fashola? Lagosians? Heck-no - TINUBU. The gyst was when Tinubu told him to prepare to be the governor, and Fashola wanted to refuse, Tinubu told him it's an order he can't refuse

3. Tinubu it was that opened up the government of Lagos state to the private sector, picking industry captain as commissioners and special assistants. No wonder Tunji Bello once said in his column in ThisDay that the state executive meetings were master pieces. People like Dele Alake, Tunji Bello (US based Lawyer and Media guru), Ben Akabueze (Former MD of NAL Merchant Bank), Muiz Banire(Lawyer and Lecturer Unilag), Arc. Towry Coker(Foremost Architect), Tunde Anibaba(Almost made it to Rector LASPOTECH), Rahman Owokoniran, Hakeem Gbajabiamila, Rauf Aregbesola etc

Thanks Bro.

If anyone is in this mess, Pls PM me and I'll give you the contacts of my ex-lecturer. He's quite good. If we don't speak, we are digging the grave for generations to come.

Training is part of the contract and labour engagement plan for any typical staff and no company has any right to BOND any staff. I'm sorry am passionate about this.
Wallie: Things are not always that clear cut. Just because you willingly sign something doesn’t make it enforceable.

This particular contract may be unenforceable because of (1) illegality, (2) fraud, (3) duress, and (4) unconscionability. Of all the available defenses listed, I think unconscionability and illegality might prove to be the strongest defense.

The contract is unconscionable because it is extremely unfair to ONLY the applicant and an applicant almost has no choice than to sign it (duress) because they have no bargaining power and if not signed, will continue to remain unemployed thereby subjecting their family to untold hardship. The contract is heavily lopsided! They also want you to pay if they fire you?

Won’t you sign a contract like the one above to provide for your family especially when other jobs are almost non-existent?

By Business Law lecturer in Bskul told us that it is illegal for coys to get employees to sign BOND. In fact he said if employers want to bond us, we should sign and challeng them to take us to court. He quoted one case where FG sent a guy abroad and he was put on bond, the guy walked away from the useless bond and won in court...
My brother, Access bank would not kill job seekers with this funny bond. My wife signed that bond in 2009 after training school at Ikeja and left the bank the next year. Guess what??

They collapsed the 2M bond into her account which she already emptied and since then, it has been accruing debit interest. I wrote them a stinker and challenged them to take her to court but yet they have decided to take it on the guarantor who has equally asked them to seek redress in court.

I am still waiting for them . . .
I'd rather we allow the discussion of Educational Policies and Strategies of any state that's worth discussing on this thread. There is nothing bad if he brings Kano here. I like the fact that he took up the challenge and provided facts. I also think we can learn a thing or two from Kano's perspective.
Funkymallam,

Why don't you open another thread for Kano, this is about Osun.

Politics › Re: Chukwumerije Hails Osun’s Education Policies. by mapet: 8:59am On Oct 11, 2012
Let me go straight to some key issues

1. You're entitled to your opinions, so no biggie
2. I'm tempted to believe that the crux of this thread is lost on you. First off, thank God that a non Osun, a non ACN member and the head of the Senate committe on education gave the verdict after an assessment. I am not too certain how many of such has been given by the same body. So if you point out that the best reform you saw were some few things, all well and good. I would have thought an understanding of Chukwumerije's statement bothering on translation of policies into strategy and action is the laudable effort. Besides, it is not compulsory that all the 18point be implemented in 1day or 1 year. what is important is that a sustainable foundation is laid and continually built upon.
3. With regards to the students in Ukraine, except you're on a journey in self deceit, then it should not be lost on you that the state government had done something noble and responsible with the situation all involved found themselves. First who's fault was it to enrol students on medical program when they were not ready to put in place the requisite teaching hospital and get it accredited. So you expect the state government to now leave the huge problem of Osun State medical students being in limbo and then be discussing some useless bond?
4. Please insult me as you wish, but if you care to check, the OP came into this thread with facts. Even Funkymallan that was challenged to do same did. Yet you expect us to gobble some unverified statements that they should have accessed grants from international bodies. Even at that, humour me a little; what is the correllation of "Research Grants" with the government's cost of running a state University. Is that what research grants used for to youhuh grin
5. If you're still battling with how the state could have funded the 18 action point in the policy, i'll tell you that the summit itself had charged a sub-committee with the task of fund-raising strategies. I keep saying it that we take the easiest route of general critisism without critically looking at contents and workings of institution, yet we end up talking from an uninformed view

Sky Blue: I will simply address the main differring views.

The best reform in all I saw was in the primary school sector which I pointed out - so it was irrelevant going into that. I stand my ground on there being little improvement in quality of education with the outcomes posted in secondary and tertiary institutions. Apart from manufacturing in Osun, what do they actually bring to the educational process of secondary and tertiary institutions? I am also of the view that one solidly maintained and improved campus makes more sense than seven poorly equiped village sites.

With regards to sending students to Ukraine, we need to fundamentally look at the purpose of education and the purpose of a University. If it can's contribute to society then it is worthless. Now, the students being sent off to Ukraine all expenses paid, are they under any obligation to return to the state to contribute to it meanigfully? If not then what on earth does the state gain, considering it is the state paying for this? Chinese students are helped by their government, study abroad AND return to China to add to development of that growing economy.

With regards to budget and whether the state can afford it, I find it a HUGE contradiction that you could postulate about the need for fiscal responsibility by 'plugging loopholes', and then challenge me to prove the state can afford it these social reforms. I really have to restrain myself so it does not seem like I am insulting you, but that is a tad silly. Like most states in Nigeria, Osun struggles with infrastrucure and insecurity among other vices. Money that is spent on schemes with lesser societal impact like sending students to Ukraine and a few others I did not bother to mention, is money that could have been spent on OTHER THINGS. No Nigerian state is in the position of having more money than it needs, hence the need for minimal WASTE.

I will pick the only main point raised in your last flurry of sentences. Bodies like the UN and international research bodies and NGOS normally have processes through which institutions can apply for grants. I know that such is possible because I have looked into the issue before (won't elaborate unless necessary). A lot of Universities in the west make most of their money from research grants.

You even hit the nail on the head more than I did
Katsumoto: He doesn't have to employ federal character when talking about achievers. If he likes he can mention two only from the SW or one from the SW and two from the SS or only one from the SE. If he hasn't heard of good works from administrators in other regions, should he mention them just for the sake of applying federal character?

There is no need to make subjective arguments about the level of development in the education sector or any sector for that matter. The thread is open to debate, if you feel that Osun state is lagging because other states are doing better with their own resources, then present the data. That would be a more logical approach than the approach which you took which what appears to be a witch-hunt.

BTW, I am not criticizing you, just your approach.

Oga Mallam,

Commending "each alike" without factual basis for such commendation is useless. Kano's gov is doing well, so we heard as well, but supply details so we can review it. It is even for our good. If your grouse is that we are talking about one and not the other, then you're probaly going to reduce the essence of this discussion to "roforofo-dog-fight" or "beer-parlor-analysis"
Funkymallam: not blaming anyone bro but saying we should commend each alike.
Do you know the population of kano state compared to osun with relative to the allocation? Moreover, the gov is just over a year there and is doing great in the respect.
Politics › Re: Chukwumerije Hails Osun’s Education Policies. by mapet: 8:52pm On Oct 10, 2012
Oga Sky Blue....

Please check my reactions in the bolded underlined part.
Sky Blue: With all due respect Mr Chukwumerije, I do not share your optimism. The only positive thing I saw in that report was the moving of Manufacturing facility for touch screen device to the state, and the patronising of local tailors for uniforms which are both good. I think you probably had not followed this issue since the educational summit and also the time we debated on the issue of the tailors and the laptop. What you say is good in the laptop, was widely condemed as a waste of time and funds. People here lampooned the initiative, say he should have built libraries, instead of investing in tablets. I think what I want to nail as an agreed point is the localizing of the manufacturing and knowledge transfer

Correct me if I am wrong but Osun is not exactly a rich state, like most states it depends significantly on the federal government. Hence while social reforms might sound all good and nice with fuzzy feelings et al, we need to ask what has to give. What has to give, for me will be plugging loopholes of wasteful spendings, not well thoughtout strategies and "Jeunjeun" political loot sharing. If we also add to it the fact that residents has to pay taxes, the state has to increase the IGR drive and much more. I think it's probably laziness of being innovative that makes us tag states as perpetually reliant of federal allocation as the means of survival. I'm also tempted to see a contradiction with your next question on quality...and my answers therein.

Education is much more than infrastructure. Education is about quality. It goes beyond buildings to include lab equipments, teacher training, etc. The problem a lot of Nigerian Universities have is that they CANNOT source funds effectively enough to improve on the quality (equipment, training, infrastructure, etc). So what we end up with is many village schools we call universities whose bests are yet to crack the top 1000 in the world. I think you need to furnish yourself with the outcome of the Educational summit held the more. Quality was a major identified gap and challenge that needed to be addresssed. I remember vividly well a poser Aregbesola made to the delegates to ponder upon was the viability of a 7-campus arrangement of UNIOSUN which makes it difficult to maintain as against a single, stronger and better managed institution. For me, I eagerly await the 170 model schools he's embarked upon and I pray he brings it to fruition soon (I thought they said some will be ready before the resumption of the new session). I want to see model schools like the ones Tinubu and Fashola has built in Lagos. Then my guess is that the issue of standard labs, libraries, computer facilities etc will come with the package

So the question is this, how does reducing University income help matters? I'm also with you on this. Reducing Univeristy fees, is just a short term political gimmick that won't work. Education is not cheap and we're better off looking for more realistic way of bridging the gap.

And the most shocking thing, we are meant to celebrate government sending students abroad to get a better education in a place that can give them opportunities their state and country could not provide for them? You're wrong here. Sending them to Ukrane was a last resort, to give them a soft landing. These students would have had to go do Jamb again. Recall that the medical students of UniOsun could not proceed to do their clinicals, as UniOsun had no teaching hospitals and these students were rejected by all other Nigerian Universities that were approached for help; hence the Ukraine option. So this is laudable as a social service/gift to Osun medical student in a dire situationHow is that something to beat the chest about? Were these students made to sign contract saying when they finish they will come back to contribute meaningfully to their state? So what does the state gain from that?

There were other things to pick up on from that article but it is not worth the time. Sometimes I worry about the leaders we have. The positives are manufacturing site moving to the state. I liked the reforms for primary schools (assuming the state can EVEN afford it), but I saw nothing to be joyful about with regards to educational QUALITY for Secondary schools and Universities IN THE STATE.Please prove with data and stats that the state cannot afford it. Is this opinion from an informed position or just your imaginationhuh

I might just have to start ignoring news about Osun because me and that man think completely differently. Socialism is not cheap. We should be helping our Universities tap into global funds to help improve their quality and be trying to retain and meaningfully deploy local talent.Socialism or Capitalism is not the issue here. Education is it that is not cheap. I think you're just overtly jumping into wrong conclusions. Please what global funds are you talking abouthuh All your positions here are simple suggestion that needed to be added to make a collective good. You've not said anything new or different. I think it is important that there was an all inclusive stakeholder summit in planning the policies and execution. That some of the action point of the summit is being actualized and not in a dusty file, is the greatest pluses to take away.

I beg to disagree with you a bit. While the fact that celebrity status does not bequeath on them all knowledge, but the fact that they had some form of basic education(and I dare say SS3), some of the shameless displays are unbelievable.

No wonder we struggle to find substance, lofty and valueable meaning, poetic skills and life lessons in songs of now-a-days. When Tell magazine released a feature "Generation of the Dullards" to bring to fore the decay in basic knowledge of our youths in secondary school, which was evidence by the year-on-year abysmal performance in WAEC, we never knew the ripple effect will so spread to all facets of life.

pro01: The fact that they are celebrities doesn't mean that they should be more knowledgeable or "intelligent" than the average Nigerian. In fact, I strongly suspect that many viewers/posters on this thread would first look up the word 'incumbent' to know what it really means (because they were hitherto unsure), and then subsequently mock the celebrities. Celebrities › Re: Yinka Ayefele's Music House To Be Demolished By Oyo State Govt by mapet:
Oga sir,

1. Building a 4-lane road in a neo-cosmopolitan/populated city in the 21st century may not make logical sense IMHO. I went to Park Avenue in New York a month ago and it was like the former Oshodi madness. Giant Multi-story buildings, with roads that cannot sustain the human traffic. You'll wonder in a typical area in the states when they had to combine traffic light, and traffic warders, road patrol officers, police men, temporary road dividers, to control traffic. If we don't start planning sensibly for the near future it will be mess/chaos

2. There are issues of overriding collective good that superceeds and individual's. Demolishing structures of individuals is one of the sacrifice some people have to make. I believe that Ayefele will be compensated, so what d biggie

3. Gbenga Adeboye of blessed memory's studio was about to be demolished by Marwa back then, and Adeboye went on his radio program to state that even though he'll suffer losses, but if it will be to the collective good of Lagos State and the area, then he's ready to pay the sacrifice. He even went on to further refer to his studio in his jokes as jingles as "ile ise wa, ki won to wo", meaning "my place of work before it is demolished".

4. With technology and engineering feat, nothing is impossible. If cities are built on water so roads can be built in virtually any terrain.

onyxo76: i stay in ibadan. building an 8 lane road in the area may not really possible.too many filling stations and buildings will be affected .a 4 lane road is more realistic .
just after ayefele house is a depression on which i guess no road can built.

thegoodjoehunt: There is no proof yet that they were cultists or robbers. Let us wait for the police to finish their investigation.
LOOK AT THIS PICTURE http://vanessamichael..co.uk/2012/10/picture-of-ugonnaone-of-victims-of-aluu.html

This picture of Ugonna one of the deceased surfaced, while he was on a working holiday in London. Okay sources reiterated that he's one of the children of a well-to-do family. So the story of him being involved in a petty theft is really kinda contradictory. And according to an eye-witness who claimed to be very close to the deceased family, the boys were just unfortunate and were at the wrong place at the wrong time. On that fateful day, one of the victims actually went to collect the money a friend owed him and somehow an argument ensued. The debtor then raised a false alarm alerting the indigenes of the community. Sadly, there had been reports of incessant thefts/robbery in that community. And so the boys were rounded-up, taken to the chief's and even though they pleaded innocence, it all fell on deaf ears. They were then stripped, paraded as robbers, beaten and burned to death. With the very disturbing video all over the net, the nation and those in diaspora are calling for JUSTICE as it was wrong for the villagers to have taken the law into their hands.

This is the story I heard, I don't know why people are just calling them Cultists and Robbers without any proof. I even Heard that Tekena is very cool and not a hot headed kid. Let us not jump into conclusion yet.

@Ola_pluto,

1. I doubt you can vouch for any of the team members except you know them, and their parents and when they were actually born.
2. I'm not sympathetic to a cause where we shamelessly cheat and fail to realise we're hurting ourselves. First look at the team against Columbia, I told myself this is just too ridiculous and glaring.
3. The reporter has done his bit and it's left for us to also as people of integrity do our bit. How? Whoever went to primary or secondary school with the lady in question can say on this page. I've always said these things are easy to find out. Nigeria's goal keeper in Coach Tela's team played U17 @ age 30. A reporter went to Taiwo Ogunjobi with irrefutable evidence, yet Taiwo Ogunjobi refused to take him out of the team. I was in Primary 1 when Festus Odini was in Primary Six. In fact we used to call him "Boda De-Boy", yet the same was in U17 with Kanu, Oruma, Babayaro's team in 93. That year I slightly crossed 17. People that know Kanu will tell you he's closer to 50 now, yet claiming 36. Julius Aghahowa's wife was my wife's mate in the Uni. She got to Aghahowa when she was in year 3, and by then she was not a teenager. Julius played U20, after he was alledged to have served in the Police..... Gbenga Okunnowo, Ugbade, Furo-Iyenemi, etc are cases I know.
4. Truth is, we are doing ourselves disservice. We're not going to win this cup, so why cheat in the first place? There are some true and talented U17s who deserves the spots some of these girls are ILLEGALLY occupying, yet we rob their future and Nigeria's. These current girls will not even make it to U20, yet the true U17s who should have been discovered and taken by foreign clubs to help nurture their talent further woun't see them. Guess what happens, we keep getting worse as a team. Super Eagles has "graduated" to a point where we're not sure of qualification for Nation's cup, U21 teams struggle at international competition, despite cheating with 30 year olds against teenagers (I mean France recently defeated our old men)
Thank you very much for bringing up this issue. The report is flimsy! Though I doubt the age of some of our players, but I can vouch for 70% of the team being U17. I recently posted the picture of some of the team players for people to judge. I will also repost some of the pictures if I have time.
As for the 'proof' of the silly reporter, it is very flimsy and too thin. In fact, he got most of the proofs the wrong way round. His first evidence is that Blessing is the younger sister of Victoria. He concludes this because Blessing says 'God go make you BIGGER sis. Luv you to death'. He concludes that means she was referring to her elder sister (illiteracy). God making someone bigger doesnt mean they are your bigger sis.
I think sometimes we need to be wary of lazy Nigerian journalists who always try to bring down our players.
Not necesssary. In business strategy, you may opine that you don't need a gigantic edifice to be profitable, especially when you're trying to re-align(downsize, right-size etc). This will also be a veritable options of raising funds, than debt financing (banks or Fiancial institutions) or equity financing (sell stakes)

It's been a common practice in business world, although dangerous, cos their market is already led by iphone and samsung. But it may be worth the shot. Some top coys in the US have done this, in most cases the HQs are sold to top hotels......
afam4eva: Are they that poor that they would have to sell their headquarters?

1. The write up is dumb.
Let's assume this is not NL Nollywood
2. The premise and argument of both the writer and agent is even more stupid. So Oni's offence is that he did not allow a shipping agent to "squeeze" him....pathetic crap reasoning
3. How can a shipment of a 40' contaniner controll a whole market in a statehuh?
4. So Oni shipping for his "supposed" girlfriend is giving an undue advantagehuh? Honestly I'm alarm as the volatility of common sense on NL at times?
Aigbofa: Actually, I think the part about him having a girlfriend is balderdash anyway, it is nobody's business. He can even import a shipload of cooking oil, if it is legal. But importing refined cooking oil is not.

grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

You know when some pps makes it to the state with questionable papers, live minimum wage life style and come back to 9ja to do nyanga, they just misjiive. The bobo thinks he's talking to his villagers and ancestors, whom he lies to and they gubble it up in awe...... the blind trying to lead....

Pls tell him we know about America by mere reading the media
lagcity: i don't have any problems with Igbo except their blatant lies that can make Lazarus rise from the dead. Haba, the guy said that Igbos own 70% of businesses in Lagos, he just pulled it out of his arse. If we let them become governor, they'll claim that they developed Lagos and that it was like mogadishu b4 they took over. i don't know what the diagnosis is for such grand delusion of epic proportions. these guys are killing me wit the lies! angry angry angry angry

Bros,

See how you skillfully turned logic on its head
This shows clearly that GEJ is working. Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Enugu, Calabar, Akwa Ibom is atleast developing their state. If other governors will follow this developmental stride, the much soughted development will be achieved in no distance time. We are all Nigerians let us see this achievement as Nigerians and not partisan or tribal views.
