Ok, do you all recall a bank known as Societe Generale? These Swiss banks are leaving for similar reasons. For diplomatic reasons and to build more cooperation with Switzerland, particularly in area of repatriation of stolen wealth, Nigeria has overlooked the crimes committed by HSBC and UBC as conduits for channelling huge sums of stolen money out of Nigeria and into Switzerland secret accounts. Life is like a game of card and whether you are aware or not, you are playing the game. Most people who are not experiencing growth in their lives or business are those who don't know how to play the game so also it is in the workplace. Your degree might get you a good job but it may not determine if you will stay long in your job.
Today, I want to share with you just five tips that you can use to secure your job or position for as long as you want.

- Loyalty
The loyalty of some employees either to the owner of the company, the head of their department, the wife/husband/boyfriend or girlfriend of their boss etc is the reason why they still have their jobs. You may think they are being foolish, but their foolishness is why they still have a job. Even if you are naturally proud, wisdom demands you fake loyalty until you have been able to gather enough money or experience or contact to move forward. It won't be a bad idea if you keep telling you boss how loyal you are. Humans are naturally selfish, so, no one will lift up another man if they don't believe that they can control you.

- Keep Your Mouth Shut
People who always want to say it as they saw it or as they are feeling always die before their time. You might be loyal to your bosses but your mouth can betray your loyalty. If you want to keep your job you must be careful how you talk whether in public or private. Recently, a top editor in a top organization in Nigeria allowed his mouth to put him in trouble. Don't talk bad about your superiors to your colleagues because you don't know who was planted in the company to report what you said. Never you allow your mouth to take away food from your mouth.

- Competency
Competency is a card you need to play in order to secure your job forever. You need to develop yourself until no one in your organization is as competent as you in your field. People will always need people who have what they need. Haven't you wondered why some ladies still stick to their abusive partners? He may have character flaws but he may be too good in the other room to let go (this is not my handwriting o!).

- Learn To Play The Workplace Politics Well
I have written a whole writeup on workplace politics before and I don't intend to repeat it here. Because of God let me explain a little. Politics is not just about political offices, it has now entered into every organizations and institutions. For you to be able to secure your job you must understand the various politics at play in workplaces. Like, the politics of numbers, the politics of institutions, the politics of relationship etc.

- Have Plans In Place
Inasmuch as this writeup is about securing your job, I also believe that you should have an exit plan. Having a realistic exit plan will give you confidence in your job. Most people will ride on you and even withhold your salary if they know that you don't have a choice. Your confidence will make them think otherwise. Please, don't be arrogant or overly confident when you don't have an exit plan otherwise, you will just lose your job for nothing.

Perhaps he forgot the hawker has to recover the cost of goods sold before he can say he has made money; the farmer also has to recover all costs incurred in growing his crops before he can talk about net gain likewise the driver. You dont look at how much they are with at the end of the day. You need to consider the costs they incured in keeping their machines up. Someone repairs a vehicle with 25k within a week and also makes 30k within that same week. Would you say he earns more than a salary earner whose only cost is cost of transportation and that is not to mention the health implications of such jobs.

Opinionated:
Divide your salary by 30 days and see what you get (i.e. the number of days in a month and see the funny thing about your salary plan).

For example, an average level-12 worker in the state government civil service earns N60,000.

And this translates to N 60,000÷30= N 2,000 every day. This is less than the amount made daily by an average hawker in the city.

A freshly employed graduate banker in most Nigerian banks earns an average of N120,000 monthly.

So every day, you get N120,000÷30= N4,000 as the daily value for your work-life. By implication, this is less than the amount earned daily by an average driver in the city and in some villages.

If you are a fresh graduate employee in some oil companies, you earn an average of N300,000 monthly. So in a day your work-value is N300,000 ÷ 30= N10,000

This is less than the daily amount earned by an irrigation farmer supplying vegetables to Lagos markets, a tipper driver supplying sand for three block industries and construction sites just 3 times a day and drivers of Dangote trucks who have bought-off the trucks at scrap value and are using them to convey products between villages and the cities for just five business owners.

Hope by now, it is sinking in, right?

And when there is an issue in the family that requires financial assistance, the drivers, hawkers and the rest are looking up to you with a white collar job.

If you are an NYSC member, you don’t need to be told that:

N19,800÷30 = N660 is your worth on a daily basis.

I hope you know that pure water sellers who own a shop, a pepper soup joint and a small Toyota Corolla car to distribute pure water to five restaurants earn more than you and wheel-barrow pushers working on contract for three warehouses probably make more money than you each day.

Wake up and be more productive. We should be more proactive, create room for more income and strive to diversify our streams of income.

The earlier you wake up and smell the coffee, the better for you.

Someone right now will say this analysis is too ideal to be true but take your time and do it, you will grasp the crux!

Stop waiting for the government to feed you, feed yourself and help the government feed others. That is where we are in this age.

Average Lagos hawker makes more than 2k daily? Are you talking about his revenue or net gain after cost of goods sold must have been deducted? If it is the later, you are WRONG. Not even sachet water that has a high turnover will give you that.

Furthermore, if you take out UBA, Zenith and maybe Skye bank due to their recent problems, no bank pays an Executive Trainee/Graduate Trainee/Entry Level, Full Staff cadre 120k. We all know the importance of getting multiple sources of income. However, if you must educate us on it's importance, please take the pain to do a good research so as not to mislead people.
