Car Talk / Re: Why Do Nigerians Prefer To Buy Used Car Rather Than Buying A New Car? by MARKREN: 6:02pm On Dec 19, 2013
U spoke my mind.
Just to add to your point: I moved to a part of town where the roads are in a horrible shape and I was torn apart between buying a brand new car or a fairly used 4x4. After much deliberation I opted for a used 4runner at N3.7M, a friend of mine opted for a new Kia sportage (N4.5M), while another went for the brand new Pajero (N7.5M). After about a year of use on those roads (We all know how bad some roads in Lagos can be especially in developing areas) the difference is clear. Their cars are always in the mechanic for one issue or the other. In fact one of them has changed his break pad more than twice this one year while the other has had to change his master braking system, not to mention other sundry issues.
We are being cheated in this part of the world with the so called new cars being brought here as they are of inferior quality when you compare them with the European or American specs (I just do not mean Kia & Hyundai, even some brand new Toyota cars are of inferior quality), due to the non availability of standards in our country. As a result these cars dealer bring in all sort of rubbish (especially from Asia & South Africa of recent) into this country claiming there are new cars while in the real sense, these car will not pass the strict quality standards set in US or Europe. I can just imagine what will happen when we start assembling cars again as the FG is inconceivably pushing.
Lastly Nigeria is not the only country where people buy used cars. In the US and UK there are huge used cars markets which serve as a bridge for people who cannot afford new cars. The only difference is that they do not need to import them due the sophisticated and well developed auto industry they possess.
As for mileage this is dependent on what the buyer wants. I still have a 2002 Camry I bought in 2008. It is still serving very well, except for the shocks due to our Lagos roads. I would not trade it for a new picanto, i10, accent or even an Elantra (even though they give better mileage) due to its build quality, as I have ridden in some of them cars; they are nice to drive in when they are new, but when they get old ( by old I mean 3-4 years and above), they become very problematic, due to our bad roads and have a poor resale value if you want to get rid of them.

abatically: First of all, not only Nigerians buy used cars. People in developed countries like the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, etc all buy used cars. As a matter of fact, I would say Nigerians even buy new cars than other developed countries. You will ask me why I say so. Reason is we make full payment for our cars and even pay more than those white folks. For Naija its cash and carry, while in developed countries, about 70% of new cars are on loan payment. How many banks give car loan in Nigeria?

Now op back to ur Kia. Lets say u get ur 2013 new Kia Rio for 2.5million. Yes there is nothing like driving a new car, but with that money I can buy a very clean title low mileage 2008 Honda Accord 4 cylinder. You have better fuel mpg than me no doubt , but do u derive joy in driving that car? How strong are ur suspension. What about safety features and other fun stuff. Well all that might not matter to u because u said car na car. To some people there is more to a car than just mpg and moving from point A to point B. Even though my car is older than urs, its still more advanced than ur new Kia. After 5 years of usage, compare the 2 cars, mine will still be stronger while urs would have worn out. I have more space , more power, more speed, stability etc. And when i decide I am bored with it, I am still going to get more value for money than ur new Kia rio or picanto. So.. if I don't have enough money to buy the latest model of the car I like, I can buy an older model at a cheaper price rather than buy what I don't like just because its brand new.

If I want fuel economy close to what ur Kia rio or picanto gets, the 2.5M will still get me a very clean 2010 toyota corolla and trust me, it will dust ur brand new kia in every aspect. Come back after 5 years My corolla will still be going strong while ur Kia would have worth not more than 400k

We like to delude ourselves in this part of the world. Banning or high tariffs without establishing the required capacity and a porous/ corrupt customs agency equals increase in smugguling and more revenue losses/leakages for govt (which ironically is what they are trying to curtail. This is MacroEco 101. We dont manufacture any car in Nigeria and pls nobody should mention PAN. The duty on cars is already high, at least 25% as at the last time, and some of us are singing and clapping. This is the same Govt that reduced the years for used cars from 8 to 15. Another policy somersault by this clueless Govt..........All this point to what i have been saying for the last 2 years this country is bankrupt and in this period we have seem all manners of tax and tarriff increases across board to meet the costs of running this expensive but unproductive govt

With the level of underdevelopment in his hometown Takum in particular & Taraba (his own state) in general, one begins to wonder about the significance of this gift to Ogun State.

I served in Taraba state and it level of development is miles away from Ogun state. Only 4 local governments out of the 17 or 18 have power. Education is nothing to write home about. Health services are poor, & corp member make up a sizable bunch of their medical teams all of their hospitals and health centers. Road and Infrastructure is another matter. Despite all these this is a state that has the potential to feed this country with its vast and rich land suitable for virtually all forms of agriculture & animal husbandry.

One would think that though his wealth is ill gotten, if he wanted to make a donations, he would remember his people first.

Rubbish write-up!!!!!!

Marriage is about 2 people not one person. It is the commitment of the 2 parties involved to make it work that counts.

Marriage goes far beyond all what you have written and in some cases some of the things you quoted as not being an issue actually go a long way in determining the success or otherwise of any marriage, while some other you mentioned as key in no way affect or influence it. I would not want to go into details as you write-up smacks a tone of immaturity.

Nobody possesses all the qualities you outlined at the same time as Nobody is perfect and so also no marriage is perfect.

Politics / Re: A British Response To 3,000 Pounds Bond by MARKREN: 6:33pm On Aug 16, 2013
We Nigerians are the silliest and most hypocritical people.

We complain about the hostile attitude and unreasonable conditions we get from Foreign countries, while we treat our own fellow Nigerians with so much disdain. We actually deport our own fellow Nigerians for reasons such as "being destitute & mentally challenged". We have finally succeeded in "criminalizing poverty". If you are poor it is now your fault, if you cannot afford the right healthcare to take care of yourself it is your fault. If you cannot feed it is your fault. And to top it off we who claim to worship "God" clap our hands in support.

Our Leaders tells us that there is no money to fix our education, health, transport systems etc, meanwhile they and their wards go abroad whenever they like and as usual we sing and clap for them as long as they come for the same ethnic or religious group.

The British know what they are doing. They are not as stupid as we are. They have seen a pattern in Visa applications & stay of people for the affected countries, & have worked a potential cash generation opportunity and are exploiting it to the fullest because they know we Nigerians will stupidly pay and overstay their “visas”.

Instead of Nigerians to see this as a wake-up call to fix this contraption of ours, I hear silly comment like we should impose a tit for tat policy; as is British people are queue up in our embassies to come here, other people ask "why nigerians are looking to travel out?" like if the economy was well manage and our education & health sectors were up to speed, people will bother with travelling abroad.

Lagbaja knew what he was saying when he called us 200 Million mumus

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Ogun Clears Air On Employment Advert by MARKREN: 5:49pm On Jul 30, 2013
Your comment is so wrong. How can you justify paying for "employment forms" citing WAEC & JAMB. In standard HR practice, Job exams are used for promotion & confirmation of new hires. In Nigeria we know how to turn good concepts into avenues for exploitation. And for the record pls give us names of the people who you claim have gotten jobs through this means......... If this is waht ACN is going to sell to us through their "APC", I think we are better off with "PDP"..................................

Exponental: Virtually all exams we write, we pay for them, pls flash back. Days of waec, jamb, post jamb......just name them. Some of them give certificate while some do not.

PDP=APC=ACN. All these politicians are all the same. I don't know why we Nigerians are so blind to these politicians or politrickcians as I choose to call them.

My question is what is the benefit of all this acrimony? They fight each other in the day to make us take sides and cuddle up in the same bed at night to share their loot, thereby blinding us to the real issues that they should be addressing. Issues like corruption, poor education, insecurity, unemployment, excessive recurrent expenditure at all level of govt., poor infrastructure etc.

Properties / Re: Lagos Family Houses (Pictures) by MARKREN: 7:27pm On Jul 25, 2013
I cannot but look at this thread with all the comments and laugh at we Nigerians. We are so short sighted and myopic, it is not surprising that Lagagda called us 200 Million mumus while Fela called us "suffering & smiling".

Here we are arguing over which tribe who owns majority of the houses, whose pictures were uploaded, not asking the important questions Eg. What is the source of this stupendous wealth that enables them to own such property? How much do these property owners pay in income tax? What are their contributions to our society outside showing us that they have made it? Most of these property are owned by people who have stolen our public wealth and used it to their own selfish benefit. These are people who took loans from banks and did not pay back making it difficult for ordinary people like you and me to get little loans to manage our business or solve temporary cashflow problems and in some cases lead to the closure of some banks throwing people out of employment & generating losses for people who invested their life savings in their stock: These are people who collect contracts and don’t execute them, but pocket the funds: They are also people who have fleece their congregations of a percentage of their earnings in the name of religion with little or nothing to show except “cathedrals, big mosques”, schools most of their congregation cannot afford and opulent livestyles their “flock” aspire to: They are people who feed fat on rent seeking activities that do not generate any real economic benefit. In some cases they owe their employees for months and do not pay for services rendered to them. Their children go to foreign schools, they go to foreign hospitals when they have headache or catch common cold, go abroad to “shop” & holiday while we continue to languish here with no light, water, roads, education, hospitals etc.

I served in Taraba State the home state of Gen. T. Y. Danjuma. For someone who has such considerable influence in govt since 1976, there is nothing to show in the state. His hometown Takum does not have motorable roads, hospitals or good schools. This is the story of all our "Big Men" who have made it by being close to power irrespective of the states they come from, while we Nigerians fight each other over the crumbs they feed to us.
Imagine a post from someone congratulating himself & other people of his tribe for being the "ones" who own most of these properties; Properties you do not personally own or have any stake in, and then some other person arguing that the majority is from his tribe & the wars of words began to trade back and forth. I laugh hard almost falling off my chair.

Majority of the people who own these properties do not care about you or me irrespective of whether you belong to their tribe or not, as money has no religion, no tribe, no creed especially in our case where corruption is the order of the day. This has been the common thread since 1960; every tribe fighting the other over seeds sown by these power brokers while they continue to plunder our common wealth. At the end of the day we complain when nothing works.

I can go on and on but I will end with this: Dangote recently launched a Foundation to give soft loans to Nigerian in all the 774 LGAs with a view to empower them to start small businesses. I am not a big fan of Dangote, as I also hold him partly responsible for the death of a lot of local manufacturing companies in the 80’s & 90’s due to the destructive polices which he largely benefited from. But since then he has been trying to repay back by bringing local production to Nigeria, creating employment and paying taxes to all levels of govt for his activities. He was not the only one who enjoyed one form of incentive from Govt. . Imagine if we have 20, 50, 100 or 1000 Dangotes in this country all creating wealth, providing jobs & most importantly paying taxes and doing charity work, we would not be in this mess we call Nigeria. Imagine we ran a system where ideas rule and not where you come from, which tribe you belong to, which religion you profess, which church you attend, and not but these leaders whose are only interest is “it is their turn to control, chop, share, steal, etc” as if it is their God given right.

Nigeria will never move forward as long as we continue to feed off the crumbs our selfish leaders serve us, lased with tribal, ethnic and religious connotations. Why, because they know that as long as they do that we will never ask the right questions and challenge them (simple divide & rule)

Foreign Affairs / Re: What Are The Lessons From Egypt? by MARKREN: 2:46pm On Jul 04, 2013
The biggest mistake anyone will make is to compare Egypt with Nigeria. We are innately selfish and greedy people and this has been with us since independence, only amplified with every generation as we get older as a country. There are 2 categories of Nigerians "Those in positions of Power & Influence & Those waiting to get into those positions of Power & Influence". Everyone complains about how bad the system is, how those in charge are ruining everything, but deep down we are waiting for our turn to run things and get our own piece of the largesse.

We claim to be one of the most religious people in the world but lack any sense of morals. We lie, cheat, kill, rig, etc. and justify it in the name of religion. We have religious leaders who no longer preach morals or good behavior but prosperity. Therefore if you get into any position of influence, God has blessed you and u must do everything to get your own share of the loot. And guess what it is ok as long as you give 10% or higher to your Pastor or GO or Imam or better still build a cathedral or mosque for your religious faith, purchase a private jet, cars, houses and all sort of ostentatious effects for our clergy, while poverty stare us in our faces everyday. We do not believe in charity except if it is for our churches or mosques.

We are ready to sell our conscience for any piece of silver (At least Judas sold his for 30 pieces). Every Friday & Sunday I watch people attend religious services & come out the same way they entered. This is the reason why countries who are less endowed & religious than we are continue to make progress while we continue to go to churches and mosques to pray for our problems. We are waiting for God or his so-called messengers to perform miracles to solve our numerous problems forgetting the age old adage “God helps those who help themselves”. We even have a Minister of Power- a Professor of Engineering who during his interview told the Senate how he will “fight the demons & witches” who have constituted themselves into a cabal that has sabotaged the Power Sector in Nigeria. Imagine this statement coming from a so called Professor- This tells you the level of hopelessness in this country where all our problems are attributed to one witch in the Village or one demon in our family and we sit & fold our arms waiting for God upstairs to come & “deliver” us, making more silly statements like “God help Us or in God we trust”
Nigeria will never change. If you read books on Nigeria history (which we hardly do in this part of the world) you will understand that all our problems have been there since 1960. Name it Corruption, Ethnicity, Tribalism, Nepotism, Greed, Religious Violence, and we have never sat down to study them and find lasting solutions. Why Because it is not in our individual selfish interests.

The lesson is simple when people sit down and do nothing they cannot expect change to happen like we expect in this country.
