Politics / Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty For Teen Accused Of Killing Husband by matrixx9(m): 9:28pm On Oct 30, 2014 |
Nigerian prosecutors said on Thursday they may seek the death penalty against a 14-year-old girl accused of murdering her 35-year-old husband by putting rat poison in his food. The trial of Wasila Tasi’u, from a poor northern Nigeria family, has sparked a heated debate on the role of underage marriage in the conservative Muslim region, especially whether an adolescent girl can consent to be a bride. Prosecutors at the High Court in Gezawa, outside Nigeria’s second city of Kano, filed an amended complaint that charged Tasi’u with one count of murder over the killing of Umar Sani two weeks after their April wedding in the village of Unguwar Yansoro. Lead prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki said that if proved, the charge is “punishable with death” and indicated the state would seek the maximum penalty. Tasi’u entered the court wearing a cream-coloured hijab and was escorted by two policemen. Her parents, who have condemned their daughter’s alleged act, were in the public gallery — the first time the three were in the same room since Tasi’u’s arrest in April, her legal representatives said. The English-language charge sheet was translated into Hausa for the accused by the court clerk. Tasi’u refused to answer when asked if she understood the charges. The case was adjourned for 30 minutes so the charges could be better explained to the defendant, but when the alleged offences were read again Tasi’u stayed silent, turned her head to the wall and broke down in tears. “The court records (that) she pleads not guilty,” Judge Mohammed Yahaya said, apparently regarding her silence as equal to a denial of the charges and adjourned the case until November 26. Activists, including in Nigeria’s mainly Christian south, have called for Tasi’u’s immediate release, saying she should be rehabilitated as a victim and noting the prospect that she was raped by the man she married. But in the north, Islamic law operates alongside the secular criminal code, a hybrid system that has complicated the question of marital consent. The affected families have denied that Tasi’u was forced into marriage, arguing that girls across the impoverished region marry at 14 and that Tasi’u and Sani followed the traditional system of courtship. According to Nigeria’s marriage act, anyone under 21 can marry provided they have parental consent and so evidence of an agreement between Tasi’u and her father Tasiu Mohammed could undermine claims of a forced union. But defence lawyer Hussaina Aliyu has insisted the case is not a debate about the role of youth marriage in aMuslim society. Instead, she has argued that under criminal law a 14- year-old cannot be charged with murder in a high court and has demanded that the case be moved to the juvenile Source: http://..com.es/2014/10/prosecutors-demand-death-penalty-for-14.html |

Family / Woman Gives Birth After 27 Years Of Childlessness by matrixx9(m): 8:33am On Oct 30, 2014 |
An unbelievable miracle recently happened in Lagos as a certain woman simply identified as Mrs. Adenike Kolawole was delivered of a baby boy after being barren for 27 years, and having also carried her pregnancy for five years. Adenike reportedly gave birth to the baby on Sunday at Evangelical Church of Cherubim and Seraphim, located at Pipeline Road, Mafon area, Ejigbo, Lagos during church service. Narrating her story, Mrs Kolawole said, “When I found out I was pregnant, I was happy but at the same time, I was observing my normal menstrual cycles." The woman said she waited endlessly to deliver, but to no avail, so she relocated to Lagos to seek for help. The search for spiritual solution eventually brought took her to the church where she eventually delivered the baby. “I was at the church service when I noticed that water was coming from my private part and I went to a room to check what was happening, before I knew it, the baby came out alive. I raised alarm which attracted church members who assisted me to deliver the baby,“ she added. The baby’s father, Mr. Kayode said he did not believe his wife for a long time when she claimed she was pregnant because he had waited in vain. He said he was grateful to God for what he had done and thanked well wishers for their support. Source: http://..com.es/2014/10/woman-gives-birth-after-27-years-of.html |

Phones / Introducing Tsu, The First Social Network That Pays It's Users For Every Post by matrixx9(m): 8:17am On Oct 30, 2014 |
The Social Media giants may be in trouble! In Today’s world social networks like Facebook and Twitter both use user-generated content to generate profits for their shareholders with no money going back to the user. Now this has been the norm ever since the beginning of this digital age, but a revolutionary idea has come along looking to change everything around. Tsu (pronounced ‘Sue’) is the first social network that is opening up its bank to share 90% of the revenue generated with it’s users. It just launched on the 21st, and its algorithm intends to re-distribute sales revenue directly to its source. According to Tsu’s founder, Sebastian Sobczak: “Established social networks have built amazing business models prospering on the total monetization of free user-generated content. Why should anyone commercially benefit from someone else’s image, likeness and work giving no financial return to the owner? The markets we participate in are enormous, growing and can materially compensate each user — we’re simply and uniquely rewarding the users who are doing all the work. This is the way the world should work.” At a glance, Tsu seems to work in the same way as any other social network. Page views generate ad revenue, but what sets them apart is that only 10% of that ad revenue is returned to Tsu. 50% of ad revenue is sent to the content owner. The other 50% is given to the user who brought the content owner into the network. Where as any other network keeps 100% of the profit for themselves! CONFUSED? I WAS A LITTLE AT FIRST TOO. That 50% of profits propagates in a series of infinite thirds up a ‘family tree’ of users that begin with the original content owner. The person who invited him is the parent, and they get a third. The person who invited that person is a ‘grandparent’ and received a third of that third. So it’s like one giant pay-it-forward platform. So make sure to invite all your friends because Tsu only works if we decide we want it to. So Join the social media revolution and take back ownership of your social content. Education / 2015 World Schools' Debate Competition To Hold In Nigeria by matrixx9(m): 8:44am On Oct 29, 2014 |
Following the participation of the Nigerian contingent in the World Schools Debate Competition in Bangkok this year, Nigeria has been granted the hosting rights for the 2015 edition of the competition . According to the Coordinator of the President ’s School Debate, Dare Oritu , Nigeria won the hosting rights due to the brilliant performance of the country ’ s representatives in Bangkok recently . He disclosed this in Abuja while announcing the commencement of 54 th Independence Anniversary School Debate competition scheduled to hold within the week in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT ). During the debate competition , young contingents from over 60 foreign countries are expected converge in Nigeria to participate in the competition . “ Our performance at the last World Debate School Championship has given Nigeria the right to host the next International Debate in Nigeria . By April next year , we are going to host the first World Schools Debate in Nigeria ,” Oritu said. It would be recalled that Nigeria was recently promoted to the rank of competition committee membership, which gave it an edge to host the next year edition . Nigeria was initially expected to compete against Germany to host 2016 edition of the competition but its participation in Bangkok earned it the 2015 hosting right. Meanwhile , 26 states out of the 36 states of the federation are expected to take part in the 54th Independence Anniversary Schools Debate competition . According to former Minister of State for Education , Professor Jerry Agada , who is the Chairman , Advisory Board of the President ’s Schools Debate , the competition which was earlier scheduled to coincide with the nation ’s independence anniversary was put off following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the country. “ All of you might be wondering why there was a delay in organising the 54th Independence Anniversary Debate, the reason is that , the whole arrangement was made and we were to roll out our drums to do the independence celebration and you know this debate is inter basic education schools debate. “ We were to have students from the six geo- political zones of the country to do the debate , so as to highlight the 54th independence of Nigeria . “ We had wanted them to do this debate to showcase what we do in Nigeria and why we are proud to celebrate our independence , but unfortunately, that particular time was when Ebola Virus Disease ( EVD) was at the height and therefore you were aware that schools were closed and all the activities that will bring people to associate and circulate the disease was avoided. Politics / You Will Pay For Your Sins After Office, Jonathan Tells Amaechi by matrixx9(m): 8:29pm On Oct 27, 2014 |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday warned Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State against “ reckless and irresponsible” comments aimed at blackmailing the Presidency and inciting Nigerians against the government . Apart from accusing Amaechi of misappropriation of the funds belonging to Rivers State , the President reminded him of possible repercussions for his current actions when he is shred of gubernatorial immunity after leaving office next year. Jonathan , who is on a pilgrimage to Israel , was reacting to the political rally of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC ) organised by Amaechi in the state capital , Port Harcourt , during which he branded the President a non-performer and a disappointment to Rivers people and Nigerians. Jonathan in a statement issued by his spokesman , Reuben Abati, said the governor had crossed the red line in his selfish political agenda by resorting to libel, blackmail, incitement and immoral , baseless falsehood against the President , the First Lady and the Federal Government . Abati said the Presidency was aware that Amaechi had squandered the resources of Rivers State on dubious projects , but warned that “a day of reckoning will surely come when he will answer for all his actions and false allegations against President Jonathan , the First Lady and the Federal Government .” The Presidency further asked Amaechi to stop trying to make Jonathan a scape- goat in a bid to cover up his failings as governor of Rivers State for eight years. The statement reads: “Governor Rotimi Amaechi took his obnoxious willingness to denigrate the highest office in the land in a reckless bid to advance his selfish political interests to a new level of irresponsible and rascally behaviour yesterday in Port Harcourt with his totally false and baseless vituperations against President Jonathan , the First Lady and the Federal Government . “ It appears from the Governor’s completely unfounded and off-the -mark allegations that he had totally lost all sense of propriety, decorum and responsible political behaviour and resorted to unacceptable demagoguery , libel, blackmail and incitement of public disorder. “ Unless his unbridled ambition and desire for self - promotion have completely befuddled his mental faculties and caused him to totally lose touch with reality , Governor Amaechi must know that his claims and allegations are untrue . “ We can only assume therefore that he is deliberately spewing malicious falsehood in a desperate effort to incite the people of Rivers State and Nigeria against his assumed political foes . “ We warn him that there are legal , constitutional and moral limits to political rascality beyond which he will not be allowed to go without repercussions . “ The immunity which he currently enjoys notwithstanding , Governor Amaechi should be under no illusions : A day of reckoning will surely come when he will answer for all his actions and false allegations against President Jonathan , the First Lady and the Federal Government . “ He should also know that Nigerians are aware of the truth and will never be fooled or swayed by his arrant opportunism and anti- Jonathan rantings. “ Nigerians know that while Mr. Amaechi falsely accuses others of corruption, he cannot show or explain to the people of Rivers State what he has done with the billions of Naira that has accrued to the state under his tenure . “ They also know that while Amaechi continues to falsely accuse the Jonathan Administration of having done nothing for Rivers State , he has recklessly squandered huge state resources on dubious, vain-glorious projects or self- aggrandizement. “ Nigerians will know too that while he falsely alleges that Rivers and other states have not received funds due to them from the Federation account, the only outstanding allocation was for September , which was released to all states well over a week ago . “ The Governor should stop trying to make President Jonathan the scapegoat for his woeful performance in Rivers State and look to his own very apparent failings and incompetence . “ He should also stop blackmailing the First Lady who has demanded nothing from him other than good governance, justice, equity, fairness , real development and progress in Rivers State .” In another development, Governor Seriake Dickson has declared that the politics of Bayelsa State was characterised by treachery , disloyalty and pull- him-down syndrome before the emergence of the present administration . Dickson buttressed his observation on the state ’s divisive politics, saying that the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party usually gets factionalised three months after any sitting governor sets up a political structure . “ For those of you who have been involved in the politics of this state for sometime , you know that in Bayelsa, immediately a governor sets up any structure because of the essential divisive nature of politics in this state before now, two or three months down the line , you will see the party factionalised . “ Let no one ’s personal ambition be too big for the stability of our state, ” he cautioned. Celebrities / Wizkid Arrested In Kenya For Smoking Weed by matrixx9(m): 8:22pm On Oct 27, 2014 |
Wizkid Arrested In Kenya For Smoking Weed Visiting Nigerian singer Wizkid was arrested from his Nairobi Crown Plaza hotel room on Saturday afternoon and quizzed by police only hours before his flight back to Lagos. The arrest was in connection with allegations that he was caught smoking illegal substances. The incident happened at around 1pm just as the Caro singer was checking out of his hotel room where he has been staying for a week, since his last week’s concert. According to our sources, Wizkid was caught smoking ‘weed’ inside the hotel in which smoking is prohibited. The hotel’s Front Officer asked him why he was smoking before the two got into a heated argument attracting security officers who ended up calling the police to arrest him. Before police officers cuffed him and drove him to Capital Hill police station where he was quizzed, the hotel had already charged him with Sh50, 000 smoking penalty, which he paid through his credit card. Coming to his rescue was his newly found Kenyan flame Victoria Kimani, who followed him to the police station shortly after he had been arrested. Victoria had been with the singer at the hotel the previous day. Wizkid was due to leave for Lagos at around 3pm and was forced to cancel the flight due to the drama Source : http://..com.es/2014/10/wizkid-arrested-in-kenya.html 1 Like |

Politics / Why Do You Think Lagos Is Called Lasgidi? by matrixx9(m): 6:33am On Oct 26, 2014 |
Here's my opinion Las Gidi or simply Gidi is a name commonly used to refer to the city of Lagos, Nigeria. You can see it in the names of such organisations as ‘Gidi Lounge’, ‘Gidi Traffic’ and of course your very own ‘Gidi Business’. But why Gidi? And how did Lagos come to be known as ‘Las Gidi’? Like anything historical and undocumented, there are several explanations depending on whom you ask. However, there are two main widely expressed sources of the name – one being more plausible than the other. 1. Benin Origin. It has been claimed that sometimes in the 1970’s in Benin City, Nigeria, a slang was coined out of ‘Lagos’ and ‘City’ to form ‘LasGity’. The term then morphed to ‘Lasgidi’ over time. This is one plausible explanation of how the term came to be especially if you consider that most groups of people and places where named by 3rd parties. For example, it has been claimed that the ‘Yoruba’ were named such by the Hausa to their north. It is also plausible when you consider other Benin origin slangs for places such as ‘Sapelociti/Sapelocity’ [Sapele], ‘Waffi’ [Warri], and so on, some of which may or may not have survived to the present day from the 70’s. 2. Indigenous Origin. Lagos State, and Lagos city are located geographically in the part of Nigeria that is considered ‘Yorubaland’ even though the population that make up the city, like any large metropolitan city in the world, consists of persons from all over the country, continent, and planet. Therefore along with English and Pidgin English, Yoruba is the predominant language in Lagos. There are at least two sub explanations of how ‘Lasgidi’ or ‘Las Gidi’ has become the nick name for Lagos. i. The concatenation of the words ‘Las’ from ‘Lagos’ and ‘Gidi’ the Yoruba word for ‘Real’. In this case, Lasgidi or Las Gidi would mean something like ‘the real Lagos’. To understand the use of the term ‘gidi’ or ‘real’ in this way, a deeper understanding of the local lingo is required. The use of the word is similar to the way it is used in ‘urban’ America in such expressions as ‘keeping it real’. ii. Another iteration of this is a bit of a tip of the hat to Las Vegas. In Yoruba, one of the ways of putting emphasis on a term is to say it twice. So saying ‘gidi gidi’ would mean something like ‘Very real’. So life in Lagos is not just real, its very real, as in, the City of ‘hard knocks’. A trendy way of putting this then became Las gidi – ‘Las’ being the Spanish plural of ‘The’, such as in ‘Las Vegas’ [The Vegas] or ‘Las Palmas’ [The palms], and so on. So what is the true origin of the term? Nobody can say for sure, but it is a term that has gained wide acceptance and is in general use If you have any other views you can still comment Source : http://..com.es/2014/10/why-lagos-is-probably-called-lasgidi.html |

Romance / The Brazilian City That's Made Up Of Only Women Appeal To Bachelors For Marriage by matrixx9(m): 7:14pm On Oct 24, 2014 |
More than 600 ladies aged 20 to 35 have made an appeal for eligible bachelors to visit their home Noiva do Cordeiro, in south-east Brazil. The predominately female settlement has its sons sent away at 18 and only a few husbands allowed into town on the weekend. "Here, the only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us, everyone is a cousin. I haven’t kissed a man for a long time," Nelma Fernandes, 23, said. "We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don't want to have to leave the town to find a husband." The settlement was founded by Maria Senhorinha de Lima after she was branded an adulterer after leaving a man she was forced to marry. Chased out of town in 1891 the catholic church excommunicated her and the next five generations of her family. Looked down on by society the town became a home to other women who had also been shunned and soon enough they were isolated from the outside world – and men. But hold your horses fellas before you book your plane ticket, the town is more than just Spice Girl levels of girl power. "Do what we say and live according to our rules," says Nelma. "There are lots of things that women do better than men. Our town is prettier, more organised, and far more harmonious than if men were in charge. "And there’s always time to stop and gossip, try on each other’s clothes and do each other’s hair and nails." Source : http://..com.es/2014/10/women-of-noiva-do-cordeiro-brazilian.html |
