Many people in Ghana have lost money by investing in a Russian-backed Ponzi scheme which promises huge profits. The scheme, the Marvodi Mondial Movement or MMM, was introduced in Ghana after it freezed in Nigeria. Ghana’s financial sector is currently struggling to recover from a major financial crisis involving Ponzi investment schemes. Millions of Ghanaians have been denied access to their savings after investing in micro-finance companies. They had been promised huge returns on their capital over a short period of time, but now they’re pleading with Ghanaian President John Mahama for a refund of their investments. “Many people are dead and many are on their sick bed, because of this money [scandal]. It’s not easy for us, Mr. President. Pay our money to us because the Bank of Ghana is under you,” said businessman Haruna Seidu. These schemes were at the center of the presidential election campaign in Ghana. The incoming New Patriotic Party government has promised to reimburse all who have lost money with these investments. Ghana’s central bank has also revised its rules to discourage such Ponzi schemes in future. Its deputy governor Johnson Asiamah said they were also receiving help from Germany on how to better protect small investors. Many Ghanaians want the government of President John Mahama, or his successor, to pay them compensation for the money they have lost “With the passage of the Ghana deposit protection bill, I am happy to inform you that the Bank of Ghana in collaboration with the German government will soon establish a deposit protection system in Ghana for the first time in our history, This will ensure protection for small depositors and enhance the safety of the financial system,” said Asiamah. New scheme Reports of a new investment scheme called the Marvodi Mondial Movement have recently emerged under which clients are proimsed a return of 30 percent in less than a month. The Russian-owned scheme been banned in some African countries including Nigeria. Financial analyst Osei Amankwah says it should be thoroughly investigated. “The bank of Ghana shouldn’t allow this to cascade. Obviously if it was bad for Nigeria, it’s not going to be any good for Ghana,” he said. The Marvodi Mondial Movement said on Twitter that their scheme in Ghana was a simple system in which a community of voluntary members provide and receive help. However, some Ghanaians are wary of these schemes. “I would not be interested in it because I am afraid of losing my money at the end,” said Bernice Asiedu, a resident of Accra. The Marvodi Mondial Movement isn’t officially licensed to operate in Ghana and officials have said that they will launch a probe into the group. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2017/01/02/ponzi-scheme-mmm-blamed-financial-misery-ghana/ |

Growing up i have seen how zealous JWs are in preaching the bible and i have always been fascinated by how they go about it. In 2009 i decided to give a shot at attending their meetings, subsequently i was given a teacher to guide me through their doctrines. While the teaching was going on i became privy of some teachings not in tandem with the bible. Some of these believes among JWs are hidden from their bible students until you are ready for baptism. In some cases new members may never know about this as these sensitive topics are rarely discussed in meetings. So below are five believes among JWs that ordinary eyes cannot see, although they may deny it, but in reality thats what is obtainable; 1. JWs Teach that not all members are in the new covenant of our Lord Jesus: This may not be a surprise to many, but most JWs you see today are not part of the new covenant to which Jesus died for, they believe Christ's sacrificial death is for the "anointed class" of 144,000 that will rule with Christ from heaven. The rest JWs are to benefit from the ransom by associating with the anointed christians. How the rest members not covered by the new covenant gets forgiveness of sins is what still baffles me because without "the blood of the ransome" there is no forgiveness of sins. 2. Not all members are to partake in the memorial: This is known generally as the holy communion elsewhere, JWs believe that not all members will partake in the memorial, it's closely related to the fact that only those in the new covenant can partake, as a result majority alive today are not permitted to partake. 3. Jesus does not mediate for majority of JWs: There is only one mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), but according to JWs teachings, Jesus mediate for only 144,000 christians, today JWs believe that among the 144,000, only less than 10,000 are alive today. These anointed class are represented by the governing body in America. It is these faithful and discrete slaves that mediate for the rest members. You must pledge your allegiance to them before you are allowed to baptise. 4. JWs must believe in 1914: this year is believed to be the year Jesus's second coming took place, they teach that Christ assumed his duty as king over the earth. All new members are expected to believe in this teaching before baptism in addition to "dedicating" yourself to Jehovah. The 1914 teaching is the foundation on which JWs was founded, not accepted it makes any member apostate. How they arrive at that date has been proven false time and time again. 5. Majority of the epistles in the new testament are addressed to anointed christians: This one appeared very weird at first, most of Paul's letters and other epistles by the apostles are addressed to the anointed 144,000 christians, but the rest are expected to live by it anyways. |
PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS, JANUARY 1, 2017 My dear Compatriots, I am happy to welcome you to the beginning of a New Year in our beloved country Nigeria. I felicitate with you today at a time when our nation is witnessing a new and impressive turnaround in our security and socio-economic situation. I know you will join me to, once again, congratulate the heroic and gallant efforts of our military and other security agencies on their remarkable successes to rid the nation of terrorism. Following the successful capture of Sambisa Forest, spearheaded by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, we have entered a new phase in our battle against our common enemy, Boko Haram. When we see our beloved 21 Chibok girls reuniting with their families and community for Christmas, it gives us the hope that those who are still in captivity will one day return to the loving arms of family, friends and well-wishers. Following the successful capture of Sambisa Forest, spearheaded by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, we have entered a new phase in our battle against our common enemy, Boko Haram I urge all Nigerians to be on the alert and watch out for strange figures settling in their communities, and report to the nearest security agencies, as our armed forces intensify the pursuit of fleeing terrorists from the captured Sambisa Forest. Misguided elements who decided to take up arms against constituted authorities must be brought to face the full weight of the law. The support of all Nigerians to security agencies to enable them successfully execute their mandate is crucial in our bid to effectively secure our country. Seeing the joyful return of thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to Damasak town in Borno State, following the reopening of Maiduguri/Gubio/Damasak road in Northern Borno on December 25, 2016, reassured us that the voluntary return of IDPs in other parts of the country is imminent. The Federal Government will spare no effort in seeing to the resettlement and rehabilitation of the unfortunate victims of terrorism and insurgency. I urge state governments, privileged Nigerians, donor agencies and countries to redouble their contributions towards this goal. Government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits. Government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits. In this New Year, I want to reassure all Nigerians that our defence and security forces are more than ever before ready to perform their constitutional role of protecting lives and property in the country; and we will surely overcome all other forms of security challenges. The lingering security issues in several states will be frontally addressed. These ugly crises cannot be allowed to fester as they strain the unifying bonds of brotherhood and neighbourliness. Some sections of the press and some politicians should avoid provocative and inflammatory statements, while the government is painstakingly trying to find solutions to our challenges. I want to remind you on the first day of this New Year of an African proverb that says “it is easy to break a broomstick but not a bunch”. Nigeria is a bunch and is more than equal to troublemakers. I have interacted with a broad spectrum of Nigerians, the old and the young, and they have told me unequivocally that they believe in the unity and stability of Nigeria. The year 2017 provides an opportunity for us to build on those aspects of our national life that unite us. We are courageous, hardworking, hospitable, steadfast and resilient people, even in the face of difficulties. These are the attributes that define us and have for years confounded the pessimists who do not believe in our continued existence as a united and indivisible nation. We are a remarkable nation that has succeeded in harnessing our multiple diversities for national development. We must continue to support and tolerate one another and live together as one. The year 2017 provides an opportunity for us to build on those aspects of our national life that unite us. We are courageous, hardworking, hospitable, steadfast and resilient people, even in the face of difficulties. We will continue to pursue peace initiatives in the Niger Delta as I again, call on our brothers in that region who have taken to violent disruptions of economic infrastructure to come to the negotiating table. As for our brothers and sisters of the Shia Community, we urge them, too, to embrace peace. They must accept the laws of the country they live in. They cannot be islands by themselves. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies must treat them humanely and according to the rule of law. On our part, in the past 20 months since our inauguration on May 29, 2015, we have focused our energies to turn around the economy, create jobs, fight corruption, and transform agriculture to replace oil and gas as a major revenue earner for the nation. I am encouraged that we are getting things right. The agricultural revolution has begun. Farmers in different parts of the country are experiencing bumper harvests; states are getting into strategic partnership towards attaining self-sufficiency in rice, and the era of over-dependence on oil for foreign exchange revenues is gradually waning. I am optimistic that the CHANGE we all yearned for in voting this administration to power in 2015 will manifest more and be sustained in different sectors, particularly agriculture, in 2017. As you may be aware, our economic recovery and growth plan in 2017 is anchored on optimising the use of local content and empowering local businesses. In pursuit of this administration’s philosophy, we will continue to appeal that we buy “Made In Nigeria” goods. Like I said during the 2017 Budget presentation to the National Assembly, farmers, small and medium-sized manufacturers, agro-allied businesses, dressmakers, entertainers and technology start-ups, will remain the true drivers of our economic future. They are the engine of our economic recovery and their needs underpin our Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. On job creation, this administration will sustain existing programmes aimed at lifting a vast number of our youth out of poverty, while at the same time creating the opportunities for people to fend for themselves. Our determination to wrestle corruption to the ground remains unshaken. This fight, which will be guided by respect for the rule of law and due process, will not spare anybody or organ of government. It is a collective undertaking and resolve that must be seen to its logical conclusion in spite of certain distractions. The fate of our country lies partly in the success of this campaign. It will be unthinkable on my part to allow the boat of this crucial campaign promise capsize mid-stream. I thank you for the public support for our administration’s efforts to transform Nigeria. I assure you again that the current pains are temporary and will ease when the economic seeds in gestation begin to bloom to fruition. I urge you to continue to support this administration in its effort to transform Nigeria for the good of all. I wish you a Happy New Year, 2017. The Enugu State Police Command on Thursday appealed to residents and community leaders in the state to report any shortlisted candidate for Police recruitment with questionable character. The Command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, made the appeal in a statement issued in Enugu. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the list of successful candidates in the just-concluded Police recruitment was released about three weeks ago. Amaraizu said that any member of the public with genuine and verifiable information about the character of any candidate shortlisted in the recruitment should present such to the Police command. “Religious and traditional rulers, as well as community leaders, NGOs and members of the public with genuine and verifiable objections as to the character or conduct of any candidate should write to the Inspector-General of Police through state commissioners of Police,’’ he said. The spokesman advised shortlisted candidates to check their names on the notice board of the Police Public Relations Department, state headquarters in Enugu. “The training for successful candidates who have been shortlisted will begin on December 31, 2016 in three centres. “These centres include Police Staff College, Jos in Plateau State; Police College, Ikeja, Lagos State; and Police College, Oji-River in Enugu State. “All shortlisted candidates are expected to report to the centres with original certificates and credentials, as well as evidence of medical and physical fitness,’’ Amaraizu said. A black American billionaire, Mr Robert Smith, has volunteered to sponsor the education of 24 girls from Chibok Community, including the 21 recently rescued Chibok schoolgirls. Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, made this known to State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday. He said beneficiaries of the scheme included the first set of escapees from Boko Haram insurgents. According to him, the girls will be admitted through negotiation at the American University of Nigeria, Yola. “Smith has offered to pay for the education of the 21 released through negotiations and is offering to take responsibility for all the others who will hopefully be eventually set free. “The Murtala Mohammed Foundation in the country is equally interested,’’ he added. On the welfare of the recently-released 21 Chibok Girls, Garba said “they are being treated as adoptees of the Federal Government but there is a lot of local and international interest in the future plans of the girls.’’ However, some of the parents of the 21 Chibok Girls complained that they did not have enough room for interactions with their daughters brought home for Christmas by the Department of State Services (DSS). Reacting, Shehu admitted that there were some hitches arising from a lack of understanding of the objective of the trip on the part of some security operatives. He, however, stated that following the receipt of this complaint, a directive had been given from the headquarters for the access by the parents to be eased. “If the situation persists, please let us know so that the higher authorities will make a further intercession,” he said. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/12/27/american-billionaire-provides-scholarship-chibok-girls/ |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised the Ebonyi State Government to introduce annual national yam exhibition as a means of encouraging farmers to put in more effort in agriculture. Obasanjo, who noted that Ebonyi was one of the four pilot states selected for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal number two, an international zero hunger project, suggested that the best yam farmer should be given accolades as a means of motivating others. He spoke during a oneday South-East Economic and Security Summit in Enugu where Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State advocated resolution of boundary disputes to foster peace and development in the South-East geopolitical zone. Obasanjo, said “last year leaders met in New York, United States at the end of millennium development goal. They came with sustainable development goal and had 17 goals. Item No.2 is zero hunger by the year 2030. “So they approached me and said yes, zero hunger but we want you to lead the zero hunger review in Nigeria. We took four states and said we will focus on the four states as pilot states. “I want to take Ebonyi which is one of the four pilot states in the federation. Why can’t Ebonyi as a yam producing state have an annual yam exhibition? An annual yam exhibition where you will have judges that will determine who is the best yam farmer of the year. Not in Ebonyi State but in Nigeria but Ebonyi State will be the state hosting annual yam exhibition. That way you bring new interest to yam production.” http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/12/27/obasanjo-advices-ebonyi-to-introduce-annual-national-yam-exhibition/ |

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday said Sambisa forest would serve as training ground for personnel of the Nigerian Army as from 2017. Buratai said this in Damasak, Borno, while celebrating Christmas with troops of 145 Battalion after the road leading to the town was reopened by Gov. Kashim Shettima, three years after closure. He said troops were already conducting a mop up operation in the forest after the last strong hold of the Boko Haram terrorists was captured. “We are also opening up roads to Sambisa and Alagarno forest. Sambisa forest is going to be one of our training grounds. “I have already directed that we should conduct Nigerian Army small arms championship in that forest Next year. “And we are going to use it also to test fire our fighting vehicles, other key equipment and weapons that requires testing whenever we want to induct new weapon and equipment into the Nigerian army inventory. “It will afford us very good ground for basic tactics and indeed advance tactics, including but not limited to tactics at the Platoon, company, battalion, Brigade and even division levels. “We are going to make it more robust to make sure that these criminals do not come back to that forest again. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/12/26/nigerian-army-turn-sambisa-forest-training-ground-2017/

Some Nigerians on Thursday expressed displeasure with the celebration of the release of James Ibori, a former Delta Governor, from a prison in London. They said that such celebration was condemnable, unfortunate and uncalled for. The former governor of Delta was on Wednesday released from prison in London, U.K. Ibori was jailed in 2012, two years after he was arrested by the Interpol in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, where he was hiding after fleeing Nigeria. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Southwark Crown Court on April 17, 2012 after pleading guilty to 10-count charge of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud. In spite of his guilty plea and conviction for corruption, his kinsmen at Oghara and other Urhobo communities in the Delta, however, turned the affair to a carnival as they lined up major streets dancing. There was wild jubilation in Delta following the news of the release of the former governor. A retired teacher, Mr Augustine, said it was unfortunate that some Nigerians celebrated criminals and those who contributed to the bad situation of the country. He said, “It’s a shame that we are celebrating those who had contributed the increased unemployment rate in the country, lack of healthcare services, dwindling standard of education and failed democracy among other challenges. “Until we start to change our ways and mindset, we will continue to wallow in our problems in the nation.” In his views, Mr. Sesan Adeleye, a businessman, said such jubilation showed that politicians had successfully brainwashed some citizens with ill-gotten wealth. He said, “The problem of some Nigerians is a clear case of poverty of the mind. We value wealth so much. They are not even bothered about why he went to prison. “They are already waiting for him to come back so that he can continue to distribute ill-gotten money to them. “They don’t even care that the money stolen was meant for their welfare and development.” Also, Dr Edewede Iyamu, a private physician, said that the celebration over Ibori’s release was uncalled for as he also contributed to the pervasively poor and under developed state of the Niger Delta. She said, “Those from Niger Delta continue to blame the Federal Government for the challenges confronting their region, whereas, people like Ibori should be held responsible. “It is sad that people from that region are now celebrating him.” A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Mr. Adekunle Aribisala, said something must be done to stop the celebration of criminality in the country as it was becoming rampant. Aribisala also expressed worry that it would not be easy for the Western community to release the money in question — 18 million Pounds — to the Nigerian government. He said, “We had the same situation when Chief Bode George and Mr. Hamza Al-Mustapha were released too, now it’s Ibori. I feel really ashamed as a Nigerian. “We do not need people like that in our society any longer. They need to be isolated so they don’t corrupt more people.” In her opinion, Alhaja Aishe Jelil, a civil servant, said the future of the youth who were being used by politicians called for concern. She said, “We seem to have lost our values in this society, I wonder what the future holds for our future generations. They are celebrating Ibori because they consider him a hero and a role mode.” NAN http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/12/22/nigerians-condemn-celebration-iboris-release-uk-prison/

Participants in the ongoing federal government Youth Entrepreneur Support Programme (YES-P) in collaboration with Bank of Industry (BoI) have cried out for a more feasible loan conditions in order to be able to access the 5 million naira loan en marked for the funding of their business ideas. According to some participants interviewed by our correspondents, after going through a three months rigorous online training and another one week intensive in-class training, the Bank of Industry has presented difficult loan conditions which will effectively make it difficult to get the loan. The YES-P participants according to the loan terms will have to relinquish two certificates including their degree certificates all through the loan term as a collateral security. Another huddle is the provision of a loan guarantor who will have to declare their net worth to the bank including bank statement. The categories of individuals who can sign as guarantor are senior civil servants, doctors, lawyers, professionals. According to participants, getting these individuals to sign a loan of 5 million naira in this time of recession is an almost impossible task. The loan also comes with a 9% interest rate that must be paid within a term of five years. Most of the would be beneficiary of the scheme are already pulling out as a result of their inability to provide loan guarantors, according to a source in the bank, very few participants, less than 5% have been able to meet the loan conditions. Some of the participants also complained that the bank will mainly support their business through direct purchase of equipment and other capital assets while releasing only a maximum of 50% of the fund as working capital. According to sources, this arrangement only favors agriculture but disadvantage for those investing in ICT, intellectual properties and those whose business is offering of services. The YES Programme is an initiative of the federal government and the Bank of Industry to tackling unemployment in the country which is expected to generate 36,000 jobs for the nation. The YES Programme is also part of the federal government’s drive and wealth creation programme which is aimed at addressing the malaise of youth unemployment. The programme is targeted at young aspiring entrepreneurs within the age range of 18-35 years, who have a minimum educational qualification of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or its equivalents. Considering the hurdles standing in the way of these entrepreneurs, it is highly unlikely that the objective of this programme will be accomplished except the federal government steps in and help advice the bank of industry to soften the loan conditions. http://www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/10/05/boi-yes-programme-participants-cries-demands-attainable-loan-conditions/
