It has nothing to do with science when people say the world (earth) in most cases it refers to people in it.

"Àwọn ayé" in Yorùbá means the people nah.

So EARTH Genesis 1:1 refer to the whole planet while EARTH 1:10 refer to the habitable part for humans.

John the baptist said for months before Jesus came to John for his own baptism! Matthew 3:2

Jesus also said the same thing before and even after John the baptist was taken and detained! Matthew 4:17

And it's the same message Jesus commanded his disciples to preach when he had gathered twelve men! Matthew 10:7

Imagine you were alive during the time all this occur first you noticed John then six month time you heard Jesus saying the same thing and later Jesus' disciples became so active even after his execution.

What will you say about the whole thing that happened that year?
What do you think most Jews will say back then?

Let's not stress ourselves there was talks about John the baptist, Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples falsely prophesying about the end of the world! undecided

The Jews are familiar with all the prophecies related to the Kingdom of heaven so they knew that when the Kingdom comes the earth will change completely and evildoers will all perish one day! Psalms 37:7-11

But decades following this event both John the baptist, Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples became the talk among many Jews as they were saying:
“Where is this promised presence of his? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep in death, all things are continuing exactly as they were from creation’s beginning.” 2Peter 3:4

So today the real disciples of Christ are facing the same thing for proclaiming the same message "Repent for God's Kingdom is near" each year the families of people throughout the earth who joined this group continue counting years after members of their family left their religion for this faith proclaiming the message of God's Kingdom.

Jehovah's Witnesses throughout the earth today are been accused of being false Prophets, Satanists and so on as they remember times when this group reach one country after another proclaiming this message.

God's standard on this never changed!

Back then the law or constitution in Israel says a rebellious child must be killed so as not to corrupt the other children today true Christians follow the same standard but since God's Kingdom has been taken away from the earth in 607 b.c.e. believers now live under human governments where death penalty only comes from the superior authority who don't regard God's laws.

That's the purpose of DISFELLOWSHIPING the unrepentant wrongdoer {Matthew 18:15-17} we will no longer greet him not even eat with him {2John 10-11} it's like pelting such a person with stones. 1Corinthians 5:11-13

The difference is he may later repent and come back to his senses so that we welcome him back into the global spiritual family {2Corinthians 2:5-8} unlike the former law such ones have the chance to make a U-turn.

The idea is understood but the quoted verses didn't do justice to the OP.
God cursed the ground...God added thorns and thistles....There was no mention of seed-bearing plants and trees with fruit seeds!

If you study botany you will realize that weeds (fruitless plants) are stronger than fruit bearing plants so you have to continue cutting the weeds otherwise it will choke the fruit bearing plants.
That's what happened to our planet.
After leaving the garden Adam and his children had to work hard to preserve fruit bearing plants outside the garden otherwise they will starve to death because it's the thorns and thistles that the ground started to yield instead of fruit bearing plants that's good for consumption.

So the fruit bearing plants are everywhere on the earth before the CURSE but thorns and thistles are choking them till today!
