The easiest way to work in the USA with F1 is by driving uber or lyft. If you have clean driving records and your background check is clear you are good to go. You can make as much as $1k for full time and $500 on part time every week. You don't need to verify ur SSN as long as it's valid u have no problem. This can help u all through ur stay in school. Good luck
Thought F1 cannot participate in paid employment outside of the campus. Except You have OPT or have declared harsh economic conditions.

This is quite new. How do you explain this away to police if you are unfortunate to be caught?

Yeah.
I know international students are not eligible for the 'Federal' Work/Study program and are not allowed to take off-campus jobs. However, I also know that students with F-1 visas are allowed to work 'on-campus' and there are quite a number of such opportunities available at Harvard.
Thanks for the advice though. If I really do need to take a loan, I'll explore the options here in Nigeria before considering the US. Of course, all this is hinged upon the financial aid offer I'm given (if I get admitted).
Wow! Such brilliance! And succinct use of English. You sound like a graduate student already. Now I know the reason for you stellar performance.

Enrollment and admission are two different things.
Let's put things into perspective, you can be admitted and told to take a $100,000 loan. Would you still enroll with a $100,000 burden on your head?
Theory about endowmentis still theory. We all know pubic schools are more generous despite having less endowment. AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEE YOU'LL GET FUNDING AT HARVARD ONCE YOU'RE IN. Heck it's very unlikely. Millions of Americans take huge loans to go to those schools.

Also, a degree from Harvard won't give you a green card. You still need to hustle for h1b like someone from any other school.
If you're admitted by Harvard and asked to take a loan of $100,000, do you expect a middle class family from Lagos to be unreasonable enough to do that? Just because he wants to go to Harvard?
I have friends that went to HSPH(Harvard school of public health) Their parents are very wealthy. It is not for the average guy.
Endowment or no endowment.
I get your point. Many candidates get into Harvard already armed with scholarship. Very few seek internal funding. More so, the STEM courses have more funding opportunities! This boy we refer to is going for one of the STEM courses most probably Engineering. He was begged to apply!

I am a lecturer, I have medium scale GRE coaching centre. I have mentored good students into ivy leagues. They all went with scholarships.

If I am faced with taking 100k loans for Harvard, I will take it up. Harvard may not mean much in US. It does anyway! But you are distinct graduate in Nigeria. Imperiouxx wife knows this is true except she is a US citizen. I tell you, u can have huge return for value if u did go to harvard.

Let's clarify this: US citizens first choice of college funding is federal loan. For this, other choices somehow elude them. Whether they go to ivy league or Valparaiso, they are still burden with education loan for years to come. Funding situation is somewhat different for foreigners. Anyone with admission should never chicken out.

Update: just saw what bro imperiouxx wrote now. Makes more sense now. I learn here everyday. Imperiouxx... You know I like you, don't you?

Can't blame your wife. I too found it difficult to acclimatize here. I almost ported to texas.

cheesy cheesy And you guys will be saying funding are available at those kind of schools like it's easy. You forget about how extremely competitive it is to get ordinary admission, let alone funding. Harvard, I know of very well. Their admission doesn't come with any automatic funding. Harvard will tap fingers to collect their money in full from you. My wife is a graduate of Harvard University, her student loan is super high.
It's possible you may not get funding at the beginning. But there are tones of scholarship to apply to once in. However, you won't be deny enrolment in Harvard because of fund. Worse, you will be given loan. The endowment allows every admitted student to enrol.

I wonder why your wife is not in Nigeria. She would have paid her loan in two years. Harvard graduates are rare in Nigeria. After my PhD now, Harvard is my direction though I will be taking class in Jf Kennedy School of Government. I will need your input then.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I'm really glad I stumbled across this forum.
I've just gone through some of the previous discussions and they've been really enlightening. Getting a US student visa from Nigeria seems to be even more difficult than getting admitted into a US school in the first place.

I have a few questions (for any one in a position to answer):

1. Does the school you're admitted to have any bearing on the success/failure of your visa application/interview. For eg. let's say I have an I-20 form from Harvard College. Would that 'guarantee' me a US student visa from Nigeria?.

2. Can anyone offer any 'specific' information on scholarships that can be applied for prior to admission to a US university (for Nigerian students). [I got 2280 on the SAT I, 770 (Math Level II) and 790 (Physics) on the SAT II].

3. Considering my 1530/1600 score on the SAT Verbal (CR+W), do I still need to take the TOEFL to impress the folks at the visa office? $180 is a lot of money and I'd rather not have my parents spend it if they don't absolutely have to. MIT and Harvard waived the TOEFL for me since I did well on the SAT Verbal, but I would still gladly take it if it would help with my visa application. I can't imagine being denied a student visa if I do get admitted to an Ivy.

4. And finally...in my application for a student visa (for undergraduate studies), does the bank statement I submit have to show funds sufficient to cover the total cost of attendance for all 4 years or for just the first year?

Thanks.
Boy! you are hot as they come. But MIT and Harvard are no joke. The competition is really high. Some indians and chinese are crazily hot. But I believe you stand a chance if few Africans applied to your course. Ivy leagues aim to diversify your class. Funding is almost guaranteed for anyone that gets admitted! If I were you I would apply to some three to five more schools. Just email the school with your score and ask them to grant you waiver as you are coming from developing country. Your teacher can support with a letter too.

YOU should try Pennsylvania, Cornell, Stanford and two mid schools like Notre dame and my school- University of Missouri. As per your question, you stand a very huge chance of getting visa with ivy leagues. They are always impressed to see ivy leagues whether they show the emotion or not. This comes with huge responsibility. They won't expect you to flop when they ask you the few questions in their mind. I do not expect you to flop as an intelligent guy. See? if you flopped, you don't deserve visa

Car Talk › Re: Washing Automobile Mechanical Parts With Petrol; Is It Really Wrong? by Mayflowa(m): 6:40am On Mar 05, 2016
mayor2013:
You have spoken well. Petrol is more abrasive than kerosene. Have personally used both and the result was different, petrol being a harsh and volatile substance takes out those sticky oil easily. Also it dries up fast unlike kereosene which is non volatile in nature requires more time to dry up and doesnt clean up the parts well that needs to be cleaned up. Another substitute to this is carb cleaner but the big question goes thus; how many cans of carb cleaner would you use to clean up those sticky oils away? A dozen ? cry

Well as for me I would stick to petrol. Another important thing we should not forget is as at today in Nigeria petrol is much more cheaper than kerosene. As for me I would put into the consideration the nature of the part am to clean up. I wouldn't be using kerosene to clean up noozles. My fuel injection tester and cleaning machine does that. My opinion
Petrol will do it for nigeria driven car because of the toughness of mud stains. Kerosene is ok in clean road found in developed world. The designer of the course don't know that such a bad road found here could still exist. So they recommended non abrasive cleaner in kerosene

It is a hard calls. The country can't stop just for a few. Go change your dollars now. Policies are being package to convert idle funds in foreign currencies to naira going rate. Americans that work in Nigeria do not send Naira home but dollars. Ita a good thing to repatriate dollars home but so bad if left unused. it encourages speculation and put pressure on naira at the black market.

Currently, the only way to bypass the FOREX restriction is to operate a domiciliary account and link it to your card and receive deposits from abroad. I guess they will start restricting domiciliary accounts as well soon, after which they will have to forbid Nigerians from opening foreign accounts to bypass that restriction as well. One stupid decision leads to another. God forbid that we should let the naira find its level in order to incentivize Nigerians to earn dollars legally by exporting their goods and services.
These are genuine reasons bro but with Nigerians, trust to expect widespread financial shenanigans. That is the bane of our country such that high level economics doesn't work and Nigeria continue to defy theories that have successfully turn other mundane countries around.

What the CBN refers to are idle funds. These funds have been lying fallow for years on end. This amount is near the country's entire wealth and could stimulate development for Nigerians and the owners if invested. If you receive and keep funds in your domiciliary account with the intention of changing at black market rate at favourable times, you are as well guilty.

As a control during this harsh time, All forex earned should be converted to the Nigeria currency after 3 months. And you will see how our Naira will pick up both at the official window and the black market. The only reason foreign governments don't bother about their BDC, is because, there exist slight margin with the official window. BDCs are not profitable! so you don't find them anywhere except in airport maybe where they fleece travellers. Here BDCs are hugeeee (in Donald Trump's voice) business in which you sell currencies with no products attached. That is the beginning of a dying country.

Bro, it is not up to 0.5% of Nigerians than owns that money. Let me help with the figures:@0.5%, you get: 0.005 * 180000000 = 900,000 Nigerians. So the percentage is most likely around 0.005% which amount to 9000 Nigerians. Get the drift?

Oh. You spoke to him. That is a good way to start. You are now left with the option of watching your girlfriend keenly. You need to be sure this is one off case rather than a regular cheat with anyone on pair of shorts.

Sex could be a funny thing when you keep yourself in emotional position with anyone like sleeping on same bed or been alone in the house with someone. If you weren't raised together as siblings, you could mess up big time. Once started, you are hooked. That is why there exist so much inbreeding. Many don't just speak out. Cousins and Uncle-niece intimacy are the commonest.

In Uk, once you are 5 yrs, siblings are not allowed to sleep in same room even with same gender to dissuade this kind of abuse. A lot of nairalanders have probably had carnal knowledge with a distance family members at early age!

So create hugeeee distance between them. She has lost her freedom for this singular act. Never should you allow her go to the sex venue again with the said cousin still lurking around. That is a point of no deal if she flaunt the rule.

I wish you best of luck.
