Now to your observation. You cannot be sure that the leakage is from the top as you didn't see the bottom of the can. It could be could both be coming from the top and bottom concurrently with the gas momentum higher at the bottom. The dent you are seeing at the top of the cannister could be as a result of a collision with the windshield.

The motion of the can can also be altered as it flies around the car colliding with every part of the car until it get stuck on the glass. There are so many unknowns. You did well by thinking this but that is the actual flight is a combination of many unknown factors and forces whuch schools may be silent on.
