Christianity Etc › Re: Why Aren’t Christians Better Off Than Non-christians? by mazaje(op): 12:51pm On May 21, 2010
Romeo4real:
I don't know the type of Christians you know, or what they have told you. The purpose of Christianity is not to "live longer", be "better protected from disease", or to be "happier" than any other person. There is nowhere in the Bible that alludes to these claims. And remember, anything a Christian asks for has to be within the will of God anyway. We have hashed this out before.
And where did I say that the purpose of Christianity was to live longer lives, or diseases free lives? Christianity promises these things though to those that believe. Christians also underscore the importance of these things and claim that their god provides them with all these things like good health, good protection, guidance, help and support and I said their is no evidence to show for such claims.

There are a miniscule number Christians who fall under my definition - and i doubt that you know them. Even I, don't claim to fall under that definition.

It is not logical to cling to an assertion, when it has been shown to be incorrect. Christianity is a only religion - if you choose to accept a recent man made definition of a "religion".  Taoism and Shinto are not religions - under the definition of the term "Religion" that you subscribe to. You should know that.
I thought all religions were a way of life, no?
I'm on page 206 of The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Along with The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan, it's one of the best books I've bought recently. Utterly magnificent, something everyone should read, so you can examine what you believe and why. Dawkins' argument is less about the possibility God exists as with anger at the (ludicrous) 'God' that's been pushed down people's throats for a millenia by Christians, and justified indignation at the danger and excesses of the religious mind.  From his vantage point, the possibility 'God' exists is extremely remote.I can't believe how many things I agree with him about so far. Christians seem to have no problem with what the Jews did to other people in the OT, in the name of 'God'. If they read of Moslems doing something similar they get up on a high horse. I just came across some of the religious views of Tom Paine, and wish I could've met him. He was far, far, far ahead of his time. Stephen Hawking has his ideas of 'God', as does Einstein. They differ from a fundamentalist Christian or Moslem's ideas of God. We seem to create 'God' in our own image. I like the idea that you think there might be a creator, and wish you could elaborate on that. Evolution is illuminating and rightly humbling but has zero to do with whether we were created or not. It's like the bible; we find confirmation of all our prior convictions in it.
I have read some excerpts from the god delusion and I think its a great book. Haven't read the demon haunted world. I just don't get the double face religious people display towards the beliefs of others, What exactly is the difference between Allah and Yahweh of the OT? The apologist will spend all day lying through his teeth and trying to justify pure evil just because its from the "holy book" of its from god. The same apologist will not hesitate to condemn the act if its from another god or religion. . . . Religion is actually superficial IMO, with very little depth or substance behind it. There exists a wide variety of religious beliefs, but they share a common shallowness to them all. In our world, we have violent Muslim fanatics threatening to kill people that offend their (non-existent) deity, and then carrying out those threats. We have fundamentalist Christians that hold religious beliefs that are incredibly silly and poorly-justified. When they do have their own debates (like they do here most of the time) about the merits of various theologies or offshoot religions or sects within the religion, they refer to each other’s beliefs or doctrines that differs from theirs as absurd and silly, but never think about just how very similar their own beliefs are to them, and how absurd and silly they are as well.

There are certainly a lot of worthwhile religious debates to be had, and religious thought makes for some very interesting and sophisticated philosophical arguments about free will, the coherence or incoherence of the omni-attributes, etc. There is some intellectual depth that can be found in religion, generally when discussing those abstract concepts linked to it. Those discussions can be fun too. On the whole though, as religion is generally practiced, there is a whole lot less there than meets the eye. They are built on false premises and the wide variety of religious beliefs that exist among people are nothing more than the result of their personal biases, bigotries, coincidences, sloppy reasoning, and particular indoctrinations. Nothing about it is worthy of being taken seriously in any intellectual way IMO.

@Mazaje -
Just put your illogical hatred to one side for a minute and have a constructive argument - even if you choose to disagree. I defined exactly who a "Christian" is in my post. If the "Christians" you know do not fall under this definition, that does not make it wrong.
I know so many christians that fall under your definition of what christianity is and despite all their claims they are just like anybody else. . .No evidence what so ever to show that they are better protected from harm, or to show that they are happier or  better protected from disease and live longer than any other person. . . .

Read above. I don't know what you mean by "try to" , but you alluded in your earlier posts that the Christians you knew did not behave better than non-Christians.
The christians that I know who fall under your defination of what who a christian is make lots of the claims I talked about in the OP yet, No evidence at all to show that their claims are true. . . . .Reality says their claims are false. . . .And that was the point I was getting at. . .

Err, you are wrong here. The term "Religion" is a relatively new construct. I don't know about other faiths, but Christianity - the teachings and philosophies of Jesus Christ was originally a Discipline - A lifestyle, instructions, collections of teachings and philosophies; hence the word "Disciples" for its original adherents.
The term "Religion" came much later later to describe faiths, disciplines and spiritual teachings in general. The original latin root of the word - "religio" simply means reverence for God or the gods.
Christianity remains a religion. . . .Its a culture and a way of life which is nothing different from Islam, Taoism, Shintu and all the other religions out there, which are basically adhering to one way or life or the other. . . . Nothing separates christianity from them. . .Christianity remains a religion. . . .

I think no man named Jesus ever walked the surface of this earth. . . .You raised one very important point.  The name Yeshua  is mostly tanslated as Jesus but that is wrong since Yeshua means Joshua(Jehovah's salvation) and since the ancient greeks nothing about Jehovah I wonder why christians keep making that error in translation . I concede the possibility that there is no God, that it's all in my mind. I know there are different kinds of names for God, and our parochial society has long dubbed It, 'he'. I mean God in the sense of a Higher organism. Let me ask you this: I ask, knowing we may have unexplored abilities latent in our brains, that 500 grams of LSD produces a 'religious experience' where people 'see' gods and demons and others things passing strange, that we evolved as a species and once lived in trees, and that terrible things happen to good people. Does even the remotest possibility exist in your mind that there might be a God?
God is a loaded term. . . .Creator sounds possible. . . .As for all the Gods as described by all the religions? Hmmmm. . .I know non of those gods exists at all because all of them were created by men and their superstitions . .  .The evidence is everywhere. . . .

@mazeje - there is a serious flaw in your argument. This flaw is to assume that most people who call or label themselves as "Christians" follow the teachings and precepts of Christ.  Afterall, that is what the terms "Christian" means.
Same tired old excuse again. . . .Who then are the christians?. . . .

What did Christ teach? Unconditional Love, Selflessness, Humility, Patience, Understanding, Tolerance and Forgiveness. Irrespective of your beliefs, these are universal concepts. Most people who call themselves Christians are selfish, vainglorious, judgemental, opinionated, defrauders, unforgiving, cheats, liars and thieves - So how can their lives be better than people who are just like them?
I have lived with christians that try to observes these laws in all they do yet they are NO better than any body around. . . .

Christianity is not a badge. Christianity is not a "religion". Christianity is a lifestyle.
Islam is also a life style, Hinduism is also a lifestyle. . . .Yet they are all religions, Christianity is just like them too, except if you want to keep lying to yourself. . . .Christianity remains a religion just like any other religion out there. . . .

It's such barbarians that have battered the image of Islam and reinforced in the hearts of many that Islam is an intolerant, crude, barbaric, and violent religion.
The Christians are not better than the Muslims in Nigeria, the Christians in Jos could not even stomach the fact that a Hausa Muslim minority won the chairmanship election in Jos north local government, so the state government had to rig the election which was clearly won by the Hausa Muslim just to make sure that a Hausa man was never allowed to rule as chairman which lead to the last blood bath in the city.

I asked you to tell me if any body came out and talked about god not existing before the god hypothesis was first porposed. . . .Theist have NO evidence for any god. . . .If I ask you to provide evidence to show that your god exists I know you will start pointing to the things that exist or point to the bible a book that was written and manipulated by men which you have been conditioned to believe is god’s word . Theist just believe and thats it. Belief is not evidence at all, My real problem with faith and believers is NO ONE worships the same Jesus, the same Yahweh Or the same Allah, people just have different conceptions of who these gods are supposed to be based on the up bringing, church doctorine, or personal opinion. . . . .Believers ALWAYS write their own story of their own god  they go along. Me? I write my own views too as I go along, but I base them on what's really happening around the globe and in the universe.
The entire faith argument is sad.  It reminds us all that it is perfectly OK to accept, in pure faith, whatever it is that makes you happy.  To hell with the fact that nothing objective can be stated, shown, or proven by the entire ridiculous delusion.

Christianity Etc › Re: Is Man Truly In The Image Of God? by mazaje(m): 12:11am On May 16, 2010
@ Toba

You keep running round in a circle. . . .You are ALWAYS missing the point entirely. . . . . .  You are attempting to say that an atheist cannot prove there is no god, therefore the argument is a stalemate?  VERY WRONG!  Any time a person says "prove there is no god", that person has failed to understand the basic idea that making a claim such as "there is a god" requires a burden of proof. . . . .   The atheist has no burden of proof whatsoever in this debate.

Atheists would not exist had there never been a god assertion in the first place. . . . . .  There was never a time, prior to all known gods, when someone boldly proclaimed "there is no god" has there? There has never been such a time . . . .   The statement f no god came after the original assertion that there is a god and that statement is largely a response to the original, which if you'll remember has never been proven at all.

If no god has ever been proven over the entirety of humanity, and there have been many gods created by many cultures and religions, then the original assertion still holds the burden of proof.  Even though I technically cannot prove there is no god, I can remain unmoved by all god claims, and simply respond with, "no, there is no god."  I could easily change my position on this issue if there was even one tiny shred of evidence that something like a god was "at the controls".  But alas, every single god ever invented has fallen woefully short of being in any way objectively identified and shown to actually exist. . . .Rather there is abundant evidence to show that all gods were ceated by men (your god inclusive). . . . Throughout human history, all gods have been posited through some appeal to emotion or faith, or even pure imagination as far as I can tell.

Christianity Etc › Re: Noah Ark Have Been Discover On The Mountains In Turkey. by mazaje(m): 2:00pm On May 14, 2010
Here is what I got from another site about the claims of the Noah's flood that was "found" in Turkey. . . .

This Hong Kong group claims they are 99.9 % sure that the wood they found belongs to the Ark of Noah.  Since we have spent a few thousand hours digging into the subject of the Noah’s Flood and the Ark, we have the following questions about the alleged discovery:

1. When archaeologists make a discovery they must be able to prove exactly where they took their specimen out of the ground.  How do we know this video showing the rooms was filmed where they said it was?

2. It is claimed that this discovery was found in an ice and rock cave on Agri Dagh, also known as Mt. Ararat.  It is a known fact among geologists that nearly all of the icecap on this mountain consists of moving ice, that is, glacier.  A glacier is a river of ice which flows down the mountain.  Any wooden structure inside this ice would be ground to bits from the glacial action.  In their news releases they have reported this site to be at 13,000 feet and in another report at around 14,000.  With these altitudes it would have to be on the ice cap or at the very edge.

3.  Most geologists believe this mountain was formed in relatively recent times, i.e., after the Flood.  It is a complex volcano with no clearly discernible layers of sedimentation that would have been laid down by flood waters.

4.  The group claims they have had the wood carbon dated by a lab in Iran with the results being almost 5000 years old (with the Flood occurring about 3000 B.C.).  Why did they have the wood tested in Iran, we ask?   Will other scientists have access to the lab results?  Are there any good labs in Iran that can do this kind of testing?  Or, was the wood tested in Iran because the lab results might be harder to trace by other scientists?  Why wasn’t a lab in the United States or the United Kingdom used?  Just asking!

5.  Is this wood coated with pitch (bitumen)?  The Bible says God instructedNoah to treat the wood with pitch, either asphalt or pine pitch (Gen. 6:14).  At least some of this wood should test positive for this coating.  Also, has a botanist examined the wood to determine what kind of wood it is?

6.  What about motives?  Only God knows their true motives, but it sure makes one nervous when these groups looking for the Ark are planning a documentary video so early in the project before any truth claims are established.  One of the members of this Chinese group just happens to be a filmmaker.  Most readers interested in this subject probably notice that about once a year a new docudrama about Noah’s Ark appears on one of the cable channels.  They would not keep doing this if they didn’t make money.  Hopefully, this group’s motives are other than financial.

7.  What are the plans to publish this material in scientific peer-reviewed archaeological and geological publications?  We would have hoped that this would have been primary to a news conference and videos.  True archaeological is not forwarded by this sequence, but we certainly understand their excitement and the desire to be the first to report such a discovery.

In addition to the above questions, we have some reasons to question the integrity of this discovery for the following reasons:

1.  This group had a local guide who is a known for his deceit and fraud. It is this guide who initially informed the Chinese group that he knew the location of the Ark in 2008.  However, since then he has led them to more than one location.  The first location was a cave at a low altitude, a small cave with a tree growing in front!  Apparently the current cave is at the 13,000 or 14,000 foot level on the icecap.

2.  The specimens taken from this first cave (at the lower altitude) were claimed to be petrified wood from the Ark. In actuality, they were nothing than volcanic tuff.

3. In one of the photos of the rooms, straw is seen on the floor and even a spider web in one of the corners.  Really!  Do spiders live at 13,000 or 14,000 feet?  Can they survive the freezing temperatures?

4. There is a real problem with evangelists (which is what they claim to be) who use this kind of discovery to prove the Bible, and hence convince non-believers of its authority, when in fact the truthfulness of the discovery had not been established.  I [Bill Crouse] know firsthand of one “Indiana Jones” who spoke eloquently and emotionally about his adventures, and when he gave an invitation at the end of his presentation, many in the audience stood up to commit their lives to Christ.  When the speaker was confronted about the truthfulness of some of the stories he told that night, he replied:  “But look how many stood up to receive Christ.”  This becomes very problematic when at some point the convert learns the real truth.  They often become very embittered about all things Christian, and understandably so.

5.  There seems to be more than the usual gullibility here in that the Hong Kong group was warned about this local guide who has led others astray.  We say usual gullibility, because it seems to be a characteristic of some ark-hunters as well, in that they tend to uncritically accept all the local lore.  While many of these ark-hunters mean well, it seems that they want to believe every report seemingly at all costs; putting everything through a rational grid often is avoided as being too skeptical.

At this point we are skeptical of these new claims but would rejoice in the end if they proved to be true.  If this someday is the case, we will be the first to apologize for our doubts. We would strongly urge the Hong Kong group to follow proper scholarly procedures and publish this material in scientific, peer-reviewed archaeological and geological publications so that the scholarly community can examine the material first hand and critique it in order to offer helpful, and constructive, criticism.  For the person in the pew, we caution you to not get too excited about something that is at best, unsubstantiated; and at worst, a fraud perpetrated by an enterprising local guide!
Even Answers in genesis(AiG) has expressed concerns that creationist scientists are not being invited to see the evidence. No peer review allowed smacks of fraud. . . . . .

But if he should do this and you repent and serve him and make heaven like i said earlier, then the aim of this post is fulfilled. If God in his own wisdom doesnt do it, that does not mean he cant do it but it could eaither mean that he has given you sufficient reason to believe in him and you refused or he has a better way he can do it. God's way and will is always the best and we bow down to him. Some of you here are responding as if it's a call for God to punish people. I am not doing what I dont know.
What exactly is it you are saying?. . . .Your god remains IMAGINARY. . . .End of story. . . .

NO. If its a call for punishment then my prayer would have been for God to kill you or make you blind till you die.

This is not the christain way and God doesnt really answer such prayers because he is a loving God. Our own is to present christ in everyway convincing way to you and if at the end you refuse him, thats up to  you. God will record it that we did our best to give you the word. I still pray God to that he brings you unto repentance and salvation so that this messages you are hearing from people of God wont be a judgement to you when you die. GOD IS REAL,HEAVEN IS REAL AND HELL IS REAL. MAY GOD SAVE YOUR SOUL IN JESUS NAME. AMEN
Why then did you throw the challenge? You think that some of us kind of believe in your imaginary god but are hiding it, eh?. . . . .Your god remains imaginary. . . . . .Heaven and hell remain a myth. . . . . .end of story. . .

Op, lailai, even if they said it nothing might not happen. God will not do such. Reason being that,a man can never be convinced except if he personally wants to&something beyond the individual persuades hm/hr to do anythng. God will only touch anyones heart except God wants&not u pulling God this way.Paul did worst, but arrested paul without being dragged into it this manner. This is ridiculous.
Bla bla bla your god can't do anything because he remains inaginary. . . .Your evidence that some imaginary god arrested paul is WHAT? Of course you will say you read it in a story. . .a story whose account cancel each other out(read the two conflicting accounts of paul "arrest" in the book of acts). . .Mohammed once made the moon bow down to him too, the hadiths say so. . . .keep on believing in nonsense fairy tales that have no basis in any reality. . ,

You think we are afraid of your myths and childish imaginations? grin grin. . .Dey there. . .Your god is IMAGINARY and just like anything else a creation of other men(ancient jews and their superstitions) your religion is nothing but following another man's culture. . .You are not even ashamed of worshiping the "god of israel" whose name is yahweh. . .Are you a jew? Is yahweh a name that originated from your village?. . . .All of a sudden it is the slave masters god that is real and all other gods fake eh? Or the religion which you happen to be born inside that is real and all others fake, eh?. . . . .Its not your fault, you are way to indoctrinated to see or reason at all so keep on keeping on. . . .If you like fast and pray for 10 years. . . .there is NOTHING that your imaginary god can do to me or any atheist that comes here and takes your ridiculous test. . . .Your god remains imaginary and a creation of other men and their ridiculous superstitions. . . .

Christianity Etc › Why Aren’t Christians Better Off Than Non-christians? by mazaje(op): 2:32pm On May 08, 2010
Most times you hear Christian televangelists or pastors in churches proclaiming their god’s promise to cure the faithful of their ills, indeed we all hear Christian holy men of all denominations talking about the wonderful things their god will do for their flocks if the worship him and obey his words, We all here about things like protection, blessings, good health, long life, prosperity(you shall always be the head and never the tail) source of guidance so that they will always make the right choice etc. . . I wonder why christians aren’t better off than non-christians at all. After all, if you have the alleged creator of the universe in your corner who is alleged to be able to do all things promising you goodies like protection and what not, you should have a pretty sizable advantage over those who don’t, no?

But when I look at the condition of the faithful, they have just as many problems as the non-faithful. No evidence to show that they are any better than any body at all. I’ve never seen any indications, either anecdotal or objectively, which suggest that christians are healthier, better protected, happier, wealthier, live longer lives or in any way better off than the rest of us enemies of their god who are condemned already grin grin. I’ve never seen any evidence that believers recover from diseases faster than non believers, hit the lottery or have better lives than we infidels at all. And when disasters strike, christians get hit just as hard and suffer just as much as the heathens. Harm affects us all equally. . .

Even at funerals believers seem to grieve the loss of their loved ones as much as atheists do, even though they believe in some wonderful afterlife. I suppose the faithful think they’ll get their just rewards, and we’ll get our just punishment, in the next life, but it sure doesn’t look like they’re getting any special payoff in this life. So why do believers just keep talking about miracles, blessing and wonders ALL THE TIME, when there is absolutely NO evidence for any of these things. . . .Is there any evidence to show that christians that pray to their god for better protection from harm are better protected than we the infidels?. . . .
