Politics › Jtf, Ateke Trade Accusations Over Attack On Soboma by mbulela(op): 11:11am On Aug 11, 2009
As there appears to be no seriousness in the submission of weapons by militants in the amnesty programme offered by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement, Mr. Ateke Tom , and the Joint Task Force(JTF) in the region are trading accusations over alleged attack at the weekend.
While the leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement, Tom , alleged that his compatriot at arms, Soboma George, visited and was attacked by JTF on his way back , spokesman of the JTF in the region, Lt. Colonel Rabe Abubakar, denied the accusation as "lies laced with ulterior motives."
Ateke, who was said to be in a marathon meeting yesterday when THISDAY called, had called for the removal of JTF from the creeks to enable their boys come out to surrender.
However, we learnt that Tom had been holding talks with some officials to determine how best to handle the payment for his arms which he vowed not to submit unless he was paid, quipping, “Why dem no go pay me, I pick am for road?."
He called on President Yar’Adua to remove the JTF from the creeks, saying that though no life was lost in the attack on George, such clash could have telling effects on the peace process.
However, Abubakar denied the alleged attack, saying the call for the withdrawal of JTF troops from the creeks was not a new scheme and was meant to allow them free access to carry out their nefarious activities.
Ateke had claimed that the attack was around Dutch Island and warned against such provocations.
However, the six repentant militants who submitted their weapons at the Kaa center in Ogoniland reported again to THISDAY that their parents were being harassed by those who were yet to submit their ammunition, adding that some big names in the militancy industry were still working with those yet to submit their arms.

guy, make your point devoid of insults.it is childish and unbecoming of an adult.
i do not see any reference to city people here.
i did not need to see city people's article (i have still not seen it) to know that that collaboration was suspect.
the summary is that Tuface and Rkelly did not do a duet as implied by his album sleeve and publicists.
if he did, he long would have posted a convincing proof without even saying a word and shame would be the portion of those who doubt the authenticity of the duet.
he has not, rather we have heard aimless rhetorics from his publicists.it makes us wonder if this whole thing is not a fraudulent act.i am a fan of 2face music, so the accusation of being a hater is irrelevant.i am uninterested whether he is the biggest artiste in Africa or not (by the way that is very subjective).
Politics › The Cancer In Turai’s Cancer Project by mbulela(op): 2:45am On Aug 11, 2009
Written by Tunde Fagbenle
Sunday, 09 August 2009
Turai, full name Hajiya Turai Yar’adua, aka First Lady, is our president’s wife. A pretty and personable woman, if you ask me, whose demure look belies the fiery strong character underneath. She is also the mother of a number of daughters who have come to be known more by the ‘co-incidence’ of their marriages, each to some state governor or another, than by any individual achievement or intellect.

Before the ascension of her husband to Aso Rock, little was known of Turai – well, if truth be told, little also of her husband beyond being the innocuous governor of some near nondescript state that lives off the national cake. Even her name too, sweet as it sounds, wasn’t one of the more familiar ones around. Not a Maryam, for instance!

But Hajiya Turai, since getting to Aso Rock has gone about busily asserting her presence in the scheme of decision making within the presidency, leaving her less- than-active husband to his sleep, oft to his chagrin, but with a complementarity that assuages any reservation.

Words have been going round about how without getting Turai’s blessing you aspire to a juicy government appointment but in vain. Worse, any contract worth its salt, i.e. in the several billions of naira, comes only to those Turai appoints, and, how oft, many a well-oiled contract deal has been thwarted at the very last minute by a Turai’s sniffing intervention.

I can’t hold any of these charges against Hajiya Turai, hear say, they are, even in a Nigeria where they say: “there’s no smoke without fire”.

But in her most recent public and media outing, the First Lady has given me the greatest angst. Apparently – drawing from a chain of precedence of predecessor-First Ladies, from Mariam Babangida to Maryam Abacha right up to the late Stella Obasanjo – Madam Turai, as soon as she had settled into Aso Rock, had quickly formed her own “Foundation” which has now chosen to establish an International Cancer Centre in Abuja.

Had cancer not been such a sore point for me lately – since the sad loss of my great friend, Yinka Craig, to the dreaded disease – I would have pulled no punches in lashing out at this most obnoxious of campaigns ever held in our public space since the Obasanjo Presidential Library shenanigan about three years ago.

Madam Yar’Adua dreams of creating a Cancer Centre of international standard, hence the word “international” to the name of the proposed, er, clinic, where those who suffer from the dreaded disease can go for diagnosis and treatment. Again, I have a soft spot for any effort at dealing as deadly a blow to the terrible ailment as it dealt to my late friend, and so I’m glad Hajiya Turai shares my pain and thinks of “doing something”. Great; kind heart, great thoughts.

What is, however, disturbing is how Turai has gone about wanting to get her “dream” materialize.

At a well-publicized Fund-raising event held at the appropriately chosen International Conference Centre, Abuja, Hajia Turai got the “Crème de la Crème” of Nigeria political and business class to raise a mind-boggling N10bn for Turai’s project.

The thought of what transpired on that occasion is enough to make any right-thinking Nigerian puke. But we are in a country too far gone in absurdities and official criminalities to bat an eyelid.

N10bn donated on the spot, for a private project, of a public officer’s wife, by well-known private and public figures in private and official capacities, for a cause that is not already established, no track record, nothing; nothing, but that it’s the President’s wife’s event?

But I blame not Turai, after all, even a sitting President, that man for whom shame had no meaning, Obasanjo, had equally thrown such event and raised his own billions and nothing happened! After all, the Maryams before him also had gotten their own “pet projects” well fund-raised! Ours is a sick society indeed. And, incidentally, an eager, see-I’m-still-relevant, Obasanjo was there to chair and cheer; and to show them “how we do it”! Events such as this have themselves become the cancer of our society!

Let us visit cursorily some of the donors at Turai’s event: Alhaji Aminu Dantata donated N1.2bn on behalf of himself, friends and associates; his nephew, Aliko Dangote gave N1bn for starters, he says; Niger State governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, gave a measly N720m on behalf of some nameless “governor’s forum”. Then all sorts of characters, including that infamous Daniel Kanu of Abacha time took the opportunity to show face and “identify with a noble cause”, throwing in their own ostentatious millions for Turai to see. Even the National Assembly members weren’t left out of the struggle for Turai’s eye. And, of course, this is not counting the many others who would, for whatever fear, rather make their own donation privately and directly to the First Lady – later, and possibly more effectively.

The questions to ask: what sort of work, what sort of business, how have these people made such money as to be able to give billions of naira just like that? Where is the taxman? How much tax, personal and corporate, have these people been paying? What has happened to all the other “Foundations” and “Centers” for which “First Ladies” and “First Man” (in the case of Obasanjo) raised their own billions?

What government contracts have these “kind-hearted” donors received and will receive to compensate for their generosity? For, let no one be deceived, any and all of those donors will get the amount they contributed back in many folds – insha Allah and for as long as Turai and Umaru are in Aso Rock. Those others who may have EFCC on their trail may also be assured of some gentler handling. That is the crazy country we live in. Any surprise America’s President Barack Obama gave us a wide-berth on his maiden official visit to Africa, choosing to throw sharp barbs at us from Ghana?

Let me end where I started, I am happy at Hajiya Turai’s concern about the havoc cancer is wrecking on our society. But is this multi-billion centre really the best way to get involved? Who administers the centre? Who monitors transparency and accountability of use of the funds? Where is the guarantee of continuity beyond the Yar’Adua’s Aso Rock years? Of course, projects such as this make the need for a 2nd term more imperative – and what a curse on Nigeria that would be! Couldn’t the billions go into funding badly needed equipment and staff for a special Cancer Ward at one of the existing Teaching Hospitals?

The questions are just too many and too troubling. This cancerous business is funny and tastes really nasty. Pssshhh!

Politics › Fashanu Apologises To Babangida Over Corruption Allegations by mbulela(op): 12:34am On Aug 11, 2009
08.10.2009

Former football star and member of the Presidential Com-mittee on 2010 World Cup qualification, Ambassador John Fashanu, at the weekend, apologised to former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, over allegations that Babangida was involved in debt-buy-back.
Fashanu, who visited Babangida in his Minna residence, said his visit was to inform the General of his forthcoming youth academy event and also tender unreserved apology over the accusation he made years ago against the General.
Fashanu was in company with Chairman/CEO, Reagan Renaissance Group, owner of Reagan Cement, Chief Reagan Ufomba, who brokered the reconciliation.
The former football star said he was misguided on the said allegation and accused the Nigeria media of misrepresenting his position on the issue.
“There was never a time that I accused Gen. Babangida over funds stalked away in any foreign land. It was just a media creation and I have personally apologized to him for the embarrassment it has caused him,” he said.
His apology is coming barely two months after Saliba Mukoro was taken to Minna by the Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to seek forgiveness for participating in a foiled military coup against Babangida’s regime.
Fashanu and Ufomba, who arrived Babangida’s Hill Top residence around 10am and immediately went into a closed-door meeting lasting three hours with the former president, later said he was pleased with the outcome of the reconciliation.
He described the meeting as a rare privilege, saying he was humbled by the warm reception accorded him by the General.
Fashanu noted that he was also misquoted by newspapers that published the said report and that he never mentioned Babangida in the alleged debt-buy-back running into several billions of dollars.
“I can say it again and again, that there was nothing like debt-buy-back or any billions stalked away in any account anywhere. It was all a misrepresentation by the media world-wide, and it is rather unfortunate,” he said.
What happened, he said, was that some sections of the media liked to attribute anything good or bad to the former military president, adding that he felt sorry for his action, which he said was due to youthful exuberance, among others.
The former football star, who recalled that his relationship with Babangida dated way back to 1989 when the former military president got him introduced to former Iron Lady of Britain, Margaret Thatcher in Britain, said Babangida was not involved in any debt-buy-back scam.
“I am sorry; we have not found any evidence to link the name of His Excellency with any debt- buy-back or any allegation at all. I have also apologized to Her Excellency Maryam Babangida as well,” he said.
He said he felt humbled and highly privileged to meet with the former military president and begged him for forgiveness for the embarrassment the publications might have caused him.
Responding, Babangida expressed delight at Fashanu's visit, adding that it was not his nature to say no to those who had come forth to beg for forgiveness after realizing their mistakes.
He also said he was interested in the football academy programme being packaged by Fashanu under the auspices of the Association of Local Govern-ment of Nigeria (ALGON).
“You media goons should concern yourself with helping John to succeed in his football academy programme rather than dwelling so much on apology or no apology,” IBB submitted.

Where is the disconnect? It is still my assertion that your leaders are screwing you up? And they've been since day one.

Feel free to call whatever the idiots running around in canoe with ak 47 are doing insurrection, I call it pimping and extortion, it's just another dishonorable criminal extension of what your elected leaders are doing.

They're gonna get their money and the poor folks out there in the delta are still gonna be suffering, your leaders don't give a shit about you and MEND don't give a shit about you.

11% of Nigeria's oil wealth is more than enough to take care of everything in the delta, we're talking about billions of dollars, on top of that, you have NDDC, a fully funded federal parastatal created to promote development in the delta. Your own son  of the soil looted every penny, he blew 1 billion naira  @ the ritualist to regain his manhood. And the monthly statutory allocations nko?

I'm not sure if you know the meaning of representation and governance, your leaders are appointed or elected to take care of you, to manage/govern your state, to protect your land, it's not the feds responsibility.

Let me tell you how this shit is gonna play out. Our useless government/Abuja is gonna pay the rag tags called MEND, your leaders are gonna take their cut, MEND leaders are gonna move on to other BS with their loot, young and hungry delta boys are gonna take their spots and keep refining the extortion formula, your leaders are still not gonna pass laws and fight to protect your land and environment even tho' it's their primary responsibility esp' since they've convinced clueless people like you that it's the feds job and they're gonna keep re-routing and looting your resources.

It is your leaders jod to design, pass and enforce environmental laws, they're are either dumb, clueless, incompetent or just don't give a shit about what they're charged and took oaths to do. Just go to lagos and see what fashola is doing with LASEPA and their enviromental laws, even local governments in lagos enacting laws to protect their environments.

And it doesn't matter how much or what the feds sends to the delta because the money is gonna have to go trough your leaders (the clowns in the picture) and we both know what's gonna happen to that money.

Stop running your mouth as if the clowns in  the pictures don't exist, they are your leaders, they are the enemies, they are the reason why the delta is bleeped. love-vendor the feds as much as you want, they're gonna send the money and it's still not gonna reach the delta, it's gonna be hijacked same way they've been hijacking 11% of Nigeria's oil wealth and countless statutory allocations.

The only people I feel sorry for is the good and poor folks of the delta.

Armed insurrection against injustice sounds good, unfortunately, this ain't it. Sorry to burst your burble.
gbam.
QED. end of discussion.

I think I am clear in my stance on this issue. I am against any group playing the "VICTIM CARD" and more for the PEOPLE as a whole realizing that they need to make a decision for their own good in all this. Change is not going to come with everyone trying to blame the others for their situation. We all watched the last USA elections and how people acted to get their voices heard on both sides. If Nigerians cannot take an example from all that, then I believe we deserve what we continue to get -- every last one of us.

people outside (i mean non Nigerians) assume we too not know what is good or that we do not desire a functioning state.
so they just blab on about fighting for your right and enthroning true democracy by mass will.
the truth is that the average Nigerian has given up and thinks the situation is not worth dying for because even your death might not remedy it.
as i see it, Nigeria will continue to slide down until a massive catastrophe causes a seismic shift only then will the cabal of thieves holding us hostage set naija free.

'hey everybody here, i want one line'.
'na only PDP dey for here, one line o!'
everyone proceeded to form one line, the returning officer or whatever crap they are called, counted everyone in the line (of course there was no descent), everyone thumb printed for the ruling party. he jumped into his waiting car and everyone scampered to safety.
i presume he moved on to the next polling booth.
