Gbawe: This may be true but have you kept up with the administration of Lagos to note some of the outstanding technocrats now involved in driving the State forward? Fashola has far more 'unsung heroes' available to him than Tinubu did when he chose the then unknown Fashola as his preferred successor. Folks should not worry about Lagos because an able candidate will emerge in the end as the ACN candidate and eventual Governor of Lagos.I know aboutsome of those unsung heroes. The issue is whether BAT is willing to trust them and if they are willing to be technocrats and leave the side business to the manor of Bordillion? That is the crux of the matter. One thing is certain, Tinubu is too intelligent to trust the likes of the present House of Assembly speaker and even the rumoured senator Ashafa. |
Gbawe: The truth is that the plans for Lagos are fairly complex. The person to step in must be up to speed, as an involved and key member team player, with everything going on. I actually like Igbokwe. His 'bruiser' style may not be to everyone's taste but he gets it right saying that the problem of Nigeria can be placed at the door of Parties presenting unfit/undeserving candidates, for very important position, who will then bring everyone down to their mediocre level. You also like the way he lied and misled the public during the recent Market leader's nepotistic appointment? You inability to detach your ACN affiliation in discussions are increasingly worrying. What is their to like about Igbokwe? He just makes endless noises, yet his pay master is proving not to be much different from the clueless one we have been saddled with as president. Tinubu may not be as clueless as GEJ (in fact he is exceedingly intelligent)but his greed and insatiable desire is as destructive as the ineptness of GEJ. Igbokwe is no better than Abati and Okupe. |
Delafruita: there is one thing people fail to realise, asiwaju bola ahmed tinubu is a very wise politician.call him crooked, call him a despot or call him a thief but you cant take away his strategic mind.asiwaju rode on the back of fashola's performance in lagos to grow the ACN into what it is today.the party has been able to make inroads into other states because of his singular action of "imposing" fashola on lagos.other ACN governors are performing but the reality is such performance cannot be as visible as lagos so in essence lagos is the major selling point of the ACN and the future APc.do you really think asiwaju will play kalo-kalo with lagos?I see your point but the crux of the matter is that he wants an able governor he can trust for obvious reasons. Fashola just got on with the business of running the state and developing it while leaving the politics and money sharing to Tinubu. the problem now is that most of the interested parties in the race are too street wise to accept such an arrangement besides Tinubu is not even sure of their ability (BRF has set the bar so high). SO let us see how he rolls the dice. |
this was the same way they started out denying Aswiaju's daughter inheriting her grandma's posts. They have started again. Tinubu's greed seems insatiable,so nothing will surprise me, |
take dat: Oh, slow memory? A certain Dickson was imposed, sham primaries, and what of INEC's report on PDP 2012 National Convention indicting the party? All Patriotic and fair-minded Nigerians(Not hypocritical PDP/APC officials) should publicly denounce the near-absence of internal democracy among political parties.you are a correct man!! we should be discussing how in the presence of light in the modern world, we are being saddled with two forms of darkness and asked to choose which is not the darkest. |
jmaine: Ain't it hilarious seeing such jokes around hereDayo is a very intelligent man, seeing the indefensible nature of BAT's greed and wanton nepotism, i suspect he is just shooting breeze and making fun of the situation. |
dayokanu: You can provide evidence to the contrary and show us the Political post Tinubu is holding either by election or appointmentso that means he has no political power? Are you just trying to take the piss? He is the leader of the ACN. He determines who gets what in a party where selection is used as a form of primaries against the democratic norm of elections. How can you ask what political power he has wielded in the last 6 years? Dayo,is this one of your jokes? |
jmaine: Bros, We are talking about a man who is hero worshipped in Lagos and is often hailed for his propensity to dole out good gifts especially cash effortlessly. We are talking about a man whose vice like hold and grip on the political sphere of Lagos is exceptional .Bros,me sef Gbawe just fall my hand big time. It would have been better if he just kept quiet on this matter. He and Igbokwe told us to ignore the rumour as a it was a product of PDP antics. I believed him and disbelieved PDP. Then the Bourdillon Road lord surprised us all. How a rational lover of truth can defend such brazen act of nepotism baffles me. |
dayokanu: So the problem is not that Tinubu family contested but that they contested and won? Or whats the analogy with Keneddy's here?did you actually mean this? |
DaLover: Nice and dandy thread moving along nicely and slowly...That will be the day i stop supporting and following that great club. The sacrilege would be beyond repair. Such a clueless and inept leader supporting a classy club. Strange bedfellows. I beg he should go and support the noisy neighbours or Barca or even Bayern Munch. |
absulo: It is never private if you have the emblem of the state government on it....tell your rep to move for his impeachment if the thing dey pain you like that. Oga Fash, Man U;for life!!! |
Waste management is one major issue on which Eko has baje well well. I consider it a blot in the report card of BRF. I don't know whether it is his area of jurisdiction or the LGAs but since he is often showered with encomium for all the good that happens in Lagos (rightfully), i deem it fit to also blame him for the filth in the city. In my view, LAWMA is a failed agency. Expecting people to stockpile rubbish until a given day of the week is unrealistic and counter productive. This waste management process needs to be revisited and personal waste management tutorials made mandatory for all lagosians irrespective of class. Lagosians are not very clean people(putting it mildly). |
01 Jul 2013 BEHIND THE FIGURES by Ijeoma Nwogwugwu ijeoma.nwogwugwu@thisdaylive.com In January this year, Professor Chinedu Nebo, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and more recently Federal University, Oye, Ekiti, gave a rather disappointing account of himself during his Senate confirmation as the prospective power minister. The professor, who I believe is a devout Christian, promised the Senate that the he would rout out the “witches” and “demons” in the power sector, who he claimed had constituted a mafia to deprive Nigerians of electricity. He said: “If the president deploys me in the power sector, I believe that given my performance at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where I drove out the witches and demons, God will also give me the power to drive out the demons in the power sector.” Despite the obvious warning signs, the Senate, which like most Nigerians cannot separate the ethereal from plain logic, the upper legislative chamber still made the unfortunate mistake of confirming the professor who did not seem to know that economic development does not call for the “casting and binding of demons” as a requirement. Well, the imaginary witches and demons that Nebo spoke of seem to have gotten the better of him, as six months after his confirmation, the professor has been underwhelming and has failed to seek out the spiritual forces that have conspired to keep Nigeria in the dark. But if truth be told, the problem with Nebo is that he hasn’t got the foggiest clue of how to manage the power sector. As Ejike Okpa, a foreign-based analyst summed him up a few months ago, Nebo, he said, came from an institution with less than $15m in annual budget. “He is a cold feet in corporate boardrooms, and may not articulate financial, legal and maximally productive arguments/scenarios to entice and appease, while appealing to investors to take Nigeria’s power sector seriously.” Add to this the fact that at a time when the heavens have opened up and ushered in the rains, thus increasing the volume of water required to power the turbines at the hydro-electric dams, Nigeria which in the recent past recorded improvement in electricity output between June and October, has this year been subjected to one excuse after the other. An assessment of the power sector shows that most of the challenges in the sector are man-made, not demonic. For one, the transmission grid has not been upgraded in lockstep with electricity output. As a result, each time there is some incremental increase in electricity generation, the transmission grid shuts down. But a bigger problem lies with the managers of the power sector, especially in the power ministry. For instance, one year after the Canadian firm Manitoba Hydro International signed the management contract to take over and manage the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Canadian company has still not been allowed to carry out its mandate and gets no support from the supervisory board of TCN which is more obsessed with awarding inflated contracts for the transmission network than ensuring that it functions at optimal capacity. What is worse is that the TCN board, which is chaired by Hamman Tukur, former Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMFAC), from the outset wrote a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan stating that he had no business reporting to Nebo. His preference was to report to Vice-President Namadi Sambo. The vice-president, for the record, has never been a fan of Manitoba and refused to lift a finger in his capacity as the Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), when the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and Ministry of Justice and Office of the Attorney General rode rough shod over the management contract and tried to get it terminated last year. On top of the problem of the transmission grid and its mismanagement is inadequacy of gas supply to the thermal power stations. This has remained an intractable problem, which the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have consistently failed to address. Their usual refrain has been to blame the unattractive fiscal terms for gas development and the frequent shut down of gas facilities for routine maintenance by the oil companies. But the fact of the matter is that those in charge of the oil and gas sector are plainly incompetent; otherwise they would have insisted that the pricing of gas be made attractive and competitive in order to incentivise the oil companies to invest heavily in gas development for the domestic market. In the same breath, the scheduling of routine maintenance should be planned and carried out in a manner that it does not adversely disrupt electricity generation. That the petroleum minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke is tolerant of the indiscriminate closure of gas facilities for maintenance is indicative that she is not on top of the issues in the sector she superintends. Another factor contributing to epileptic power supply are the labour unions that have been shifting the goal post as far the settlement of workers’ entitlement is concerned. The union leaders who have been rabidly against the reforms and privatisation of the power sector have colluded with the management of the distribution and generation companies to sabotage the system. In their bid to hold on to their jobs, they have devised means to vandalise power facilities and frustrate the federal government’s effort to hand over the sector to the private sector. A bigger worry is that they have used the lack of budgetary allocation to the Gencos and Discos in the 2013 budget as the perfect fodder for their undertaking to deprive Nigerians of electricity. That Nebo has failed to deliver on Nigeria’s electricity challenges arises from the fact that he was appointed to manage a sector fraught with man-made conditions and situations that need effective leadership to tackle head on and cleanse. He has clearly shown that he was more effective in the classroom than he is at managing the power sector. The reason his predecessor Professor Bart Nnaji was disliked by those in the (vice) presidency and his power ministry was because he had the temerity to take on those who stood in the way of progress. And in his dogged determination to improve electricity supply, Nnaji partly delivered. It is unfortunate that Nebo lacks the same fighting spirit and has elected to blame factors some of us simply cannot identify with. Given his shortcomings, it is high time the president relieves Nebo of his misery so that he can head back to the classroom where he is better suited and can pontificate on witches and demons. The president can ill-afford to make mistakes with the power sector. He has too much to lose should the sector spiral out of control. He must step in and appoint a capable hand, who like Nnaji, will not be afraid to step on toes and can deliver Nigeria from darkness. |
01 Jul 2013 Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has said neither the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor anybody can give him order or condition on the dissolution of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. Amaechi who was speaking yesterday at the 60th birthday church service of former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief O.C.J Okocha (SAN), held at the Emmanuel Anglican Church, Okoro-Nu-Odo Deanery in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, noted that it was the state House of Assembly that suspended the chairman and councillors of the council over allegations of corruption, stressing that it was within the right of the Assembly to do what they did. Amaechi who was responding to some issues raised by the officiating priest, Bishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, while delivering his sermon, said he is patiently waiting to hear the final determination of the court on whether the Assembly should be allowed to perform their legitimate, constitutionally enshrined functions or not. “It is within the powers of the Rivers State House of Assembly to suspend the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The same constitution gave me the powers to dissolve Obio/Akpor, but, I have not done that. The Rivers State House of Assembly suspended the Obio/Akpor council chairman and the councilors, which is within their lawful functions... The reason for which they were suspended was corruption, so allow the Assembly to investigate. "If they investigate and the chairman and councilors are not corrupt, they will call them back. And no court can say the Assembly members have no right to carry out their lawful functions. However, whatever the court says, the Rivers State Government will obey the court. But outside that, PDP or anybody cannot give me any condition on Obio/Akpor council, we will continue to struggle for our rights, and that includes our oil wells," Amaechi explained. Amaechi also called on the people of the state to choose credible candidates during elections, reminding them of the incidence of 2005 to 2006 where militancy and kidnapping metamorphosed into breakdown of law and order in the state. Amaechi further maintained that he would remain committed to the vision of his administration to provide accountable and transparent stewardship anchored on integrity and good governance. “I have done a road to Opobo and if I drive to Opobo, will the people pursue me? I have also constructed a road to Andoni, will they pursue me for putting a road to Andoni? What about the road from Port Harcourt to Owerri road and from Eleme to the boundary between Abia State, will they pursue me? What about the schools. I met a school with 100 to 200 students in a classroom. But now, you have standard structures and conducive learning environment with only 30 students per class, and we are still building. Similarly, Amaechi has congratulated Professor Alabo Dagogo Fubara, a native of Opobo Town in the state on his 75th birthday. At a birthday reception in honour of Fubara, the governor described Fubara as a strong man who contributed immensely to the development of Rivers State. Speaking on Wike, (who is leading a small faction of the State PDP against Amaechi) the governor said Wike was too small for him (Amaechi) to discuss. Amaechi also said majority of those, who betrayed him severally were from his Ikwerre ethnic group, whom he nominated for positions at various levels, including Wike (who has now turned himself to be the chief opponent of Amaechi) and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara. Amaechi said: “His grace, this will be the first time I will be talking about my former Chief of Staff in public. My former Chief of Staff is too small for me to talk about, I don’t want to discuss him and I have never done that before. Today will be my first and last day. “You know, there are different types of men. I hope you know that there are men with character and there are men without character. And you know I have character. I don’t believe that money can solve all problems and i don't worship money, my greatest fear is that where am I going to, after here on earth... Let me also tell you that I have been betrayed severally in politics and majority of those who betrayed me are from my Ikwerre ethnic group. “Before I became a Speaker, can we look back at Ikwerre history? We were crying, we wanted Governor, we wanted this and that and the last ministerial appointment was Chief Emmanuel Aguma, a long time ago, and that was the last Ikwerre Ministerial appointment. I became Speaker and through the Grace of God I got the Deputy Speaker seat in the House of Representatives to an Ikwerre son (Austin Opara), all with my sweat, I struggled for it.” Amaechi stated that when it was time for Opara to support him, he, instead, betrayed him “Again, you can ask Mr. President, I submitted his name (Nyesom Wike) as Minister, where is he now? I Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi submitted his name (Nyesom Wike) as Minister to President Jonathan. But where is he now?... You must have character, you must be known for something...” Meanwhile, reacting to claims by the governor that he has joined the Abuja politicians to run down his administration, Chibudum Nwuche, said he could not have jettisoned the possibility of securing another term for a South-south Presidency in 2015. Nwuche, who was recently appointed the PDP Deputy National Chairman to replace Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, said the stance of Amaechi against President Goodluck Jonathan, was against the aspiration of the South-south people. His words: “What I have sought to do is to urge our governor to govern in a more competitive manner, and to also understand that our people, the entire people of South-south will prefer to have Jonathan run for another term as our president.” Nwuche said Jonathan embodied the hopes and aspirations of the people of the region, adding that nobody should distract him or undermine his government. |
Desola: See reasoning!I have long lost hope in the polity but this particular incident has made my hopeless state irreversible. The fact that intelligent men will even attempt to defend this atrocity is equally as baffling. Like i said earlier, if you think a clueless daft and inept man like GEJ is doing harm to the commonwealth, better pray an intelligent, manipulative and eternally greedy man like Tinubu does not get any where near the helm of affairs in this country. Else, there will be nothing left soon after. PDP might be evil but it is beginning to look like we actually have no better option out there. |
I believe you and Igbokwe. Of course, i do. Gbawe: Igbokwe has come out to deny this officially on behalf of the ACN. End of story. |
sylve11: if care is not taken, day shall cum when these two shall xchange punches.you wan kill GEJ for Patie? |
Gbawe: Igbokwe has come out to deny this officially on behalf of the ACN. End of story.thank God. |
take dat: Can Tinubu anoint/impose his daughter on the Association of "Nigerian" not "Lagos" Market Women and Men? Can Tinubu install the daughter as Iyaloja of Lagos when he is not the Oba? Even the said meeting which was meant to confirm or reject did not hold. Not until we hear the official position of the association and the Oba before we can conclude. As it is now, he has denied such intention.QED. but remember smokes and fire. |
Demdem:The insults were very unnecessary. you could make your points without resorting to it. “The (ACN) leadership is not aware of it. It is not true and can never be true,” said Joe Igbokwe, spokesperson, Lagos ACN. So the issue is settled,i guess? May we never have need to revisit this page again on this matter. |
take dat: The title of Iyaloja is not hereditary. Tinubu, through his party has denied the report.so the summary ofthe gist is that the THISDAY report is wrong? The daughter has not been anointed to fill either of her grandmother's positions? Kindly affirm or deny this assertion. Thank you. |
Demdem: Fool, did u notice this at all?Oh,the woman is even the head of all market men and women in the country, not just in Lagos state? |
take dat: Before she became the President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, she was and remained the Iyaloja of Lagos till her death.so is the grand daughter inheriting both positions? |
That can never happen. The only reason he is relevant in today's politics is due to the overwhelming xenophobia and stup1dity of the average Yoruba bigot who gave him their support. Other sections are not that daft.
but they are daft enough to support a clueless GEJ and his rabid wife (you know it is a joint presidency )I struggle to understand how GEJ ended up as a president. something is seriously wrong with our leadership selection mechanism. We are either ending up with crooks or clueless clowns and often a mixture of both. |
Virgin Finder: You are not a South African afterall.Damn! What makes you think i am not? i might have dual nationality. |
Poo is about to hit the fan. |
Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, has said he will lead a protest against the actions of the federal government and the state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, and challenged the police boss to shoot him if he wished.http://www.punchng.com/news/shoot-me-if-you-can-amaechi-dares-cp/ |
ACN in action. so Tinubu does not only appoint govs and House of assembly members,he also appoints market leaders? Is the concept of elections alien to ACN leaders? Hop this man does not intend to appoint angels soon? I wonder how Lai Mohammed will defend this? The opposition are almost as bad as the devil inspired PDP. Who knows, with an intelligent man like Tinubu ACN might actually do worse damage to our commonwealth than daft GEJ is doing. |
http://www.codewit.com/nigeria-news/8931-nigeria-traders-grumble-as-tinubu-s-daughter-succeeds-grandmother?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+codewitnews+%28Codewit+News+-+Home%29 Tinubu’s Daughter Succeeds GrandmotherIt was a shock they never prepared for. Gathering at the home of their late leader, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who until her death on June 14 at the age of 97, was the President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, majority of them had only come to mourn their leader, for whom the family was holding the eighth-day fidau, a religious ritual for departed Muslims. Like so many dignitaries and others from different spectrums of the society, who had converged on the late Mogaji’s Alausa, Ikeja home to take part in the eighth-day remembrance prayers for the deceased, the least the traders had expected was that on that Sunday, they would get a new leader. But they had not taken into reckoning that Mogaji’s most famous son and former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, could have other design. And that was what he did as shortly after the fidau prayers, he met with the traders, ostensibly to thank them for honouring his mother with their presence. After a short speech, he dropped the bombshell to the chagrin of the traders: his daughter, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, will replace her grandmother as President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men. Majority of them concealed the shock with muted approval. Though Tinubu-Ojo, wife of a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, could not hide her joy at the pronouncement, as she danced in appreciation, most leaders of market associations present, who had been expecting that they would have a say in who would lead them after the demise of Mogaji, grumbled at the appointment. Worried about the development which it said was against democratic ethos, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on Tinubu to rescind the decision. The party in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, noted that democratic process should be allowed to usher in a new leader as against the dictatorial style being displayed by Tinubu, who is also the national leader of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Lagos State. “The much touted democrat should allow the simple tenets of democracy to prevail in the selection of a new leader for the market women,” the statement said. The main opposition party in the state also faulted the decision to name Tinubu-Ojo as the successor to her grandmother on the grounds that she is not a full time trader, adding: “There is no cogent evidence that his nominee and daughter is a full time market woman.” According to the party, such a development is dangerous and must be reversed. “This new development portends great danger for our democracy and indeed Lagos integrity. We are thus calling on the state Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, not to sit on the fence at this auspicious time,” the party added. The PDP therefore urged Fashola to exhibit control in governance, especially when Tinubu’s interests conflict with the public interests. “He (Fashola) must see to it that the process leading to the emergence of a market leader and any other leadership in the state is transparent, liberal and credible,” PDP said. THISDAY reliably gathered that a meeting of leaders of markets slated to hold Tuesday to discuss the matter and decide on how to respond to Tinubu’s imposition of his daughter as the leader of traders in the state did not hold as scheduled. However, no reason was given for the cancellation of the meeting. But a market leader at Ijaiye-Ojokoro area who would not want his name in print, has expressed doubts over the possibility of a reversal of the decision on the grounds that Tinubu and the Lagos State Government were behind the imposition of Tinubu-Ojo as their leader. The position is considered relevant in Lagos politics as the occupant of the office wields considerable influence among traders, who constitute a significant portion of the electorate, and could exercise that influence to mobilise votes for any party of choice during elections. |
I hope the whole of Festac is included in the list of roads for rehabilitation? That place is a hot mess. I think the issue of roads are beyond building and renovation. We need to still reevaluate this drainage issue. Go and have a look at the the Orile axis of the badagry express. that road looks like it will be under construction for the rest of this century. the parts that have been completed are water logged and the drainage are not working. The daily traffic at mile two is mostly due to a water logged part of the mile 2 bus stop. Meanwhile that part of the road had long being completed. After a few more rains, a crater will be created there and we will be back to square one. As for the folks at Okota, they need to make a sacrifice to the gods. they have been forsaken. |
