During inspection, the officials uncover $110, 000, a car, and other items in the cargo from US Article | June 21, 2011 - 9:33am | By Valerie Anofochi A container containing $110,000.60 (about N15 million) has been intercepted by customs officials at the Tin-Can Island and the agent attempting to clear the cargo arrested. The container, with number MSKU 966291/0 which was brought in a marine vessel, sailed in from the United States of America. The cash was discovered during customs examination. The Customs Area Comptroller, Austen Warikoru, confirmed the discovery. According to him, the container also contained a Honda Pilot car with other personal effects. He said the money was too large to have been brought in through a container, and should have been brought in through a more transparent means. He said the method of transferring the money was against the Money Laundering Act, adding that as soon as customs concludes its investigation, the suspect and the money will be handed over to the appropriate authorities. Meanwhile, the importer of the money has been traced to Festac and customs officials are currently on his trail. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/customs-discover-sack-dollars-container |

EFCC re-arrests Bankole June 13, 2011 12:24PM The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday granted bail to Dimeji Bankole, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives after eight nights in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). However, some agents of the Commission immediately re-arrested Mr. Bankole and he will be arraigned on fresh charges today with his former deputy, Usman Nafada. Bankole who is facing prosecution on alleged corruption charges committed while in office, was asked to submit his international passport to the court which granted him bail earlier in the day in the sum of N5 million and a surety in like sum, with a landed property in Abuja. He was arrested on Sunday June 5, and charged to court for inflating contract awards which includes the cost of 400 units of 40-inch Samsung (LNS.3410 Television sets) purchased at the rate of N525, 000 per unit, instead of the prevailing market price of N295, 000 and thereby committed an offense contrary to Section 58 (4) (a) of the Public Procurement Act No. 14 of 2007 and punishable under Section 58 (5) of the same Act. The Commission had also in Abuja on Sunday arrested Mr. Nafada over allegations of corruption while in office. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5715443-146/efcc_re-arrests_bankole___.csp |
The speaker evades arrest as his security detail prevents anti-graft officials from taking him Article | June 3, 2011 - 9:40am | By Gbenga Olorunpomi Tense scenes unfolded today at the official residence of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja. Agents of Nigeria’s anti-corruption body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attempted to arrest Dimeji Bankole, the immediate-past occupier of Nigeria’s number 4 office. Bankole, who had been expected to leave Nigeria for the United Kingdom on a British Airways flight this morning, is facing allegations of corruption and money-laundering stemming from his tenure as Speaker. It was revealed that in the last few weeks of his tenure, Bankole obtained loans amounting to N10 billion, and is also alleged to have funnelled over $1 billion out of the country. However, the EFCC agents were prevented from entering the premises by plainclothes and uniformed officers attached to the Speaker’s office. A stand-off then ensued as the EFCC agents refused to leave, and a second detachment of EFCC operatives was despatched to the scene. Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, soon arrived on the scene to persuade Bankole to surrender to the EFCC agents, but left the premises abruptly, a few minutes after he arrived. Sources then revealed that while Bankole was still in the country, he was not at the Apo residence but was in hiding somewhere in the capital. Soon after, it was announced that Bankole had come to an agreement with the EFCC to surrender himself to the agency on Monday. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/efcc-goes-after-bankole |

By Armstrong Bakam April 29, 2011 01:50AM The governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, has said it was the destiny of the corps members killed in the post-election violence that erupted in the state after the presidential election to die in the riots. "As far as I am concerned, these corps members were destined to experience what they experienced during the course of their service to their fatherland because every new day is a new experience to each and every one of us as human beings," said the governor. Mr Yuguda, who was fielding questions from journalists in Bauchi shortly after casting his vote at Baba Sidi Primary School on Ran Road under heavy security yesterday, said "as human beings people must accept whatever comes their way, good or bad". He also said when the corps members were posted to the state for the national service, he did all he could as the chief security officer of the state to protect them until they were recruited as electoral officers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). "I promised to give them jobs and make them citizens of Bauchi State seven years after their service. I made sure they were well protected in my care but when I handed them over to INEC, it was the responsibility of INEC to ensure that they were well protected. "You cannot hold Yuguda or Bauchi State (responsible) for what happened to those corps members, because it was the responsibility of INEC to take care of them." The governor urged corps members who had been evacuated from the state in the aftermath of the killing of their colleagues to return, promising to ensure they are protected. He added that they should see the service year as a sacrifice to their country. "I urge them not to see what happened to their colleagues as the impression of the state. It is only a few people that unleashed violence on innocent citizens and most of them were imported from neighbouring states as well as from Niger Republic." http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5695195-146/story.csp |

With results outstanding from only Oshodi/Soomulu, the ACN has 1,373,987 votes to PDP's 251,556 for governorship polls (83 percent to PDP'S 16 percent). ACN also won all Lagos House of Assembly seats. ACN has also won governorship polls in Ogun and Oyo; but in Oyo the margin of victory is just 30,000 votes. The party has also won 24 out of 26 seats in the state assembly elections in Ekiti, losing just two to the PDP. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5694542-146/acn_wins_in_lagos_ogun_oyo.csp |
