ISLAMABAD (AP) — A Pakistani court sentenced Osama bin Laden's three widows and two of his daughters to 45 days in prison on Monday for illegally living in the country, ordering them deported when the sentence ends, their lawyer said. With credit for time served, the women and several of their other children will leave Pakistan later this month, said lawyer Mohammed Amir Khalil. They have been in detention since American commandos killed bin Laden in a large house in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad on May 2, but they were formally charged with immigration offenses only last month. The Americans left the women and children behind in the house after they flew off with bin Laden's corpse. The women may have information about how bin Laden managed to remain undetected for close to 10 years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the U.S., despite being the subject of a massive international manhunt. The youngest, 30-year-old Yemeni wife Amal Ahmed Abdel-Fatah al-Sada, has told investigators bin Laden lived in five houses while on the run and fathered four children, two of whom were born in Pakistani government hospitals. Pakistani officials have said they had no idea the al-Qaida chief was in Abbottabad, something many in Washington found hard to believe because his compound was located close to Pakistan's equivalent of the West Point military academy. The U.S. has not found evidence indicating senior Pakistani officials knew of bin Laden's whereabouts, but said he must have had some form of "support network." Two of the widows are Saudi and one is Yemeni. Khalil said Yemen has consented to the return, but he is still in discussions with Saudi officials. Saudi Arabia stripped bin Laden of his citizenship in 1994 because of his verbal attacks against the Saudi royal family. Al-Sada was overjoyed to finally be heading home, said her brother, Zakaria al-Sada, who has been campaigning for her release. Yemen has issued her five children passports so they can return with her, he said. "This verdict is a victory for the oppressed after a tough time," he said. A member of the bin Laden family in Saudi Arabia, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said they had talked to Saudi officials, who indicated they would be willing to allow the widows to return and grant their children citizenship if requested. But the family, which is prominent and wealthy, has not decided whether to intervene on the women's behalf, he said. The Saudi Foreign Ministry declined to comment. The five women were also ordered to pay a fine of about $110 each, which has already been done, said Khalil. The lawyer said he does not plan to appeal. The three widows would like to be deported to the same country to "stay as one family," he said. A Yemeni Foreign Ministry official said the country has not received a request to grant the Saudi widows residency. Al-Sada told investigators she flew to Pakistan in 2000 and traveled to Afghanistan, where she married bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks. After that, the family "scattered," she said, and she traveled to Karachi in Pakistan. She later met up with bin Laden in Peshawar and then moved to the Swat Valley, where they lived in two houses. They moved one more time before settling in Abbottabad in 2005. Al-Sada, said to be bin Laden's favorite wife, was shot and wounded in the leg during the raid. The compound in Abbottabad was a crowded place, with 28 residents — including the 54-year-old bin Laden, his wives, eight of his children and five of his grandchildren, according to Brig. Shaukat Qadir, a retired Pakistani army officer who spent months researching the bin Laden raid and said he was given access to interrogation transcripts. The bin Laden children ranged in age from his son Khaled, who was in his 20s and was killed in the raid, to a 3-year-old born during their time in Abbottabad, said Qadir. Bin Laden's courier, the courier's brother and their wives and children also lived in the compound. ____ Associated Press writers Ahmed al-Haj in Sanaa, Yemen, and Abdullah al-Shihri in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia contributed to this report. http://news.yahoo.com/bin-ladens-relatives-short-prison-sentence-094530625.html |

Enugu - The implementation of the Nigeria Incentive Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) will commence in March, an official of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said. Mr Kingsely Moghalu, the bank’s Deputy Governor, disclosed on Sunday in Enugu that a number of steps were being worked out to ensure that beneficiaries were able to access the account. NIRSAL is a N450 billion special credit portfolio set aside by the CBN as its own contribution to the Agricultural Transformation Agenda of the Federal Government. Moghalu said the CBN was now finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development that would define the role of CBN and what the partnership was meant to achieve. He said the MoU was important because it would provide an implementation platform for some of the policy issues that need to be addressed, if,lending to the agriculture value chain was to be successful. “This is a critical success factor which must be put in place before NIRSAL can deliver. The deputy governor listed a number of issues such as land reform act, legal framework for insurance and also practical ways to support farmers to transit from subsistence to commercial farming were also being looked into. He said that the apex bank had set up an implementation office for NIRSAL and that by June, the office would be converted to a non-bank financial institution that would be capitalised to drive the scheme. Moghalu said as at now, some states including Zamfara, Edo, Rivers, Ekiti, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Kano, Sokoto, Nasarawa and Benue had sent their Expression of Interest in NIRSAL to the CBN, while the bank was having series of discussion with other states. He expressed the hope that this would become a nationwide programme that all the stakeholders would key into. Moghalu said that the successful implementation of NIRSAL had the potential to additionally generate not less than N464 billion of bank lending within a period of 10 years and increase agricultural lending from the current 1.4 per cent to 7 per cent total bank lending. He explained that all the commercial banks operating in the country constitute lending channels through which NIRSAL’s fund would be disbursed to beneficiaries in a risk sharing manner with the CBN. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/03/cbn-begins-implementation-of-n450b-nirsal-special-credit-soon/ |
This is really interesting. Its nice that this thread made a front page. I observed some pertinent issues about poultry production are being raised, some have been addresed, while many have been unattended to. Kudos to the experienced/experts who have been solution providers here. However, i'll love to be part of this discussion. I presently work with one of the biggest operators in the poultry industry in Nigeria where I'd been involved in training people on Poultry/Catfish Production and management. Apart from this, our company is involved in sales of feeds, drugs, vaccines, inputs and laboratory services with business presence across Nigeria. Should you require any help/information or got questions, pls visit www.animalcare-ng.com or write info@animalcare-ng.com you can also write me on ooparinde@animalcare-ng.com Poultry farming is for the wise, hence apply wisdom. best wishes |

The tension currently brewing in the Ibru family eventually blew open Tuesday when Mrs Maiden Ibru, the widow of the late publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Chief Alex Ibru, approached a Federal High Court in Lagos with an application seeking to wind up Federal Palace Hotel over a N2 billion debt. Federal Palace Hotel, owned by Tourist Company of Nigeria, was co-founded by Alex Ibru with two of his brothers, Goodie and Michael. In the petition filed by Tunji Braithwaite, Omamo Investment Corporation wants Tourist Company of Nigeria to be wound up pursuant to the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matter Act, 2004. It also wants the court to appoint a provisional liquidator in the person of the President of the Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to supervise the winding up of the company. The company averred that between 2003 and 2009, it lent Tourist Company of Nigeria various sums of money - $7.1 million, N610 million, N381 million and N19 million respectively - which it had refused to off-set. It added that it had several times approached the respondent either personally or through its lawyer, Messrs Tunji Braithwaite & Co., for it to repay the loans but it had failed to respond positively. Omamo contended that from the evidence at its disposal, the respondent was insolvent and does not have sufficient assets to meet its liabilities or the capacity to meet the conditions for which it was incorporated. It added that the respondent’s cash flow and balance sheet have shown that it had not been effectively carrying out its hospitality business. However, the respondent, Tourist Company of Nigeria, in its preliminary objection, urged the court to strike out the petition on the ground that it was incompetent. The company contended that not only did the suit not disclose any reasonable cause of action against it, it was also an abuse of court process. The respondent also disclosed that in the ordinary course of business, it took loans and advances from trade creditors and business associates. While it admitted that it was a beneficiary of such loans and advances especially from the petitioner, the facilities are long term and resolving which were yet to become due or payable. It denied its inability to or incapability of meeting its financial obligations as they fall due. When the case came up for hearing Tuesday, a mild drama occurred as the presiding Judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke, was forced to hand off the case and transfer the case file to the Chief Judge of the court, Justice Ibrahim Auta. The drama started when Justice Okeke informed parties in the suit that he had received a letter from elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clarke, urging the court to adjourn the matter indefinitely to enable him facilitate an amicable settlement of the dispute out of court . This development did not go down well with the counsel to Omamo, Braithwaite and Maiden, who was present in court. Braithwaite prayed the court to ignore the letter, saying that Clarke was a busybody since he was not a party in the case. On his part, counsel to the respondent, Mr. Onyebuchi Aniakor, noted that though he agreed that the writer of the letter is a busybody, he was convinced that it was done with good intention. He advised the judge to use his discretion to decide the next line of action. At this stage, Justice Okeke invited a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Kola Awodein, who was in court for another matter, to contribute to the argument as a friend of the court. In his intervention, Awodein submitted that though the court has jurisdiction over the case, the court must however exercise that discretion in the best interest of the parties and in line with the law. However, in his short ruling, the judge held that though the writer of the letter was not a party before the court, he would grant a week adjournment to allow for amicable settlement of the case. After the ruling, Braithwaite told the judge that they had already written to the Chief Judge of the court to withdraw the case file from him as they no longer had confidence with the way he was handling the case. This development angered the judge who said that he would hand off the case right there, adding that he had no interest in it. He added that as an African and a Nigerian, he felt that such family matter should be settled at home and not in the open court. While this was going on, Mrs. Ibru stood up to say that the case was filed two weeks before her husband died and that before he died, he vowed to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion whether dead or alive. -Thisday

By Daniel Eteghe …Says ‘I want to travel abroad’ LAGOS- Amid tight security at the airport, a young lunatic, Monday, beat all the security agencies at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and entered into the tarmac with the intention of boarding a flight to Europe. Vanguard gathered that the man, whose identity could not be identified at press time, broke the glasses of the boarding gate at the airport and entered into the tarmac. It was further gathered that as soon as he gained entrance into the tarmac, he was said to be shouting on top of his voice that he wanted to travel to Europe. “I want to go to abroad; I want to go to Europe. Please give way for me to go,” he shouted repeatedly. The screaming of the man was said to have attracted some aviation personnel on the tarmac who thought he was a terrorist and scampered for safety while some of them called the attention of security officers attached to the airport. After a while, the combined team of security agents who he had earlier evaded apprehended him and quickly took him away from the tarmac. The security personnel later announced that he was a lunatic who found himself at the airport. It was later gathered that no sooner than the lunatic was apprehended he was detained straight away at a police station within the airport complex. The General Manager, Public Affairs of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, (FAAN) Mr. Akin Olukunle who confirmed that incident in a telephone interview with our re[porter noted that the person in question was a mad man who strayed into the airport. Olukunle emphasised that he had since been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation. He explained that if it could be ascertained that the man in question was really a mad man that the only thing the security operatives could do was to take him to the rehabilitation centre for treatment. He said, “There was truly an incident today at the Lagos Airport, but the man arrested was a lunatic who was shouting on top of his voice that he wanted to travel out of the country by all means. But, he was immediately overpowered by the security operatives attached to the airport” “After investigation, and if confirmed that he is really a mad, he will be taken to a rehabilitation centre.” He added. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/03/mad-man-breaks-into-airport-terminal/ |

A state High Court sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, has said that it cannot proceed with the trial of a former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, because the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission did not follow due process in the amendment of the initial charges brought against him. The court, presided over by Justice Olanrewaju Mabekoje, in declaring Daniel a free man, said that instead of seeking the leave of the court in amending the charges, which were initially 15, the EFCC rather relied on the Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Wemimo Ogunde, SAN. The judge held that the court cannot proceed with the trial of Daniel based on the new 43-count charge except the EFCC decides to file the case afresh and follow due process. After the ruling, which lasted for about an hour, Daniel's lead counsel, Taiwo Osipitan, SAN, said that he was set to confront the EFCC again if the commission decides to file the charges afresh. Osipitan reiterated the innocence of his client, saying justice had been done by the court. http://www.theeagleonline.com.ng/home/news/1587-court-frees-daniel-says-efcc-did-not-follow-due-process-in-amending-charges |

United States prosecutors will drop sexual assault charges against ex-International Monetary Fund Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn at his next court appearance in two weeks, or earlier, because of doubts about the credibility of the alleged victim, the New York Post has reported. The newspaper quoted an unnamed top investigator in the case who said the eventual dismissal of charges "a certainty." "We all know this case is not sustainable," The New York Post quoted its source as saying. "Her credibility is so bad now, we know we cannot sustain a case with her," the source told the newspaper, referring to the Guinean hotel maid who accused Strauss-Kahn of trying to rape her in a luxury hotel in Manhattan. Strauss-Kahn, 62, was arrested on May 14 at New York's JFK airport and subsequently resigned as managing director of the IMF, Reuters reported. But revelations that the accuser had lied about being raped in Guinea in a U.S. asylum request and changed details of her story about what she did after the incident in Strauss-Kahn's hotel suite have undermined her credibility and left prosecutors struggling to make a case. A judge released Strauss-Kahn from house arrest and lifted strict bail conditions Friday, although serious charges including sexual assault and attempted rape remain in place against the man once seen a top French presidential contender. "She is not to be believed in anything that comes out of her mouth -- which is a shame, because now we may never know what happened in that hotel room," said the source quoted by The New York Post. The newspaper said its source was at the center of the investigation and spoke only on the condition of anonymity. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news-update/11429-u.s-to-drop-strauss-kahn%E2%80%99s-charges.html |
