Politics › Ghana Prevented Nigerians From Selling Generator by Mcfemad(op): 11:28am On May 21, 2012
Lagos — President of the Academy for Entrepreneurial Studies (AES), Dr. Ausbeth Ajagu, has advocated the need for the Federal Government to stop the importation of generating sets into the country, in a bid to address the epileptic power situation in the country.

Ajagu, who spoke weekend, at a press conference, said Nigeria should emulate Ghana that barred foreigners from selling generators in order to avoid sabotage of its stable power supply.

“I was in Ghana recently and I spoke with the President. He told me that Nigerians have been prevented from coming into Ghana to sell generating sets because the moment they do that, Nigerians will sabotage the country’s electricity company and it will go up like Nigeria,” he said, adding that the President said it never occurred to him that Nigerians or anybody would ever contemplate coming to Ghana for such business.

He said: “What do you expect from somebody who imports over N50 billion worth of diesel every quarter to do? What do you expect from somebody who imports generator set in large quantity? Sabotage of course.

“If Nigeria’s electricity company works well, they will sell; we should look at each other and say, let us stop the importation of generating sets. That is the way to go, we are not for or against the proposed price hike, we are interested in enabling environment.

“If we can get constant electricity supply, whatever the price people will pay, this is because if they consider the inconveniences of financing their generating set, they are left with no option.”

He advised the Federal Government to hands off the issue of power, saying “government does not have any business with power, all they need to do is create all the necessary enabling environment.”

Speaking on the Academy’s National conference scheduled for May 22, holding at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, with theme: “Strong systems: Necessity for building a virile nation,” he said: “Our thought in AES is that the critical mix of strong institutions and system, forms the bedrock to the building of a virile and egalitarian society. This guarantees the confidence of the citizens in the now and hope for future generation because of the entrenchment of the rule of law, value for human life and global best practices or acceptable behaviour by all persons in all facets of society.”

Accordingly, he noted that communiqué from the conference would be forwarded to government in form of conference report for consideration and adoption.

“We took time to select participants of this conference, a situation where for the first time we have three past heads of state, and incumbent governors to discuss a topic on the way forward, it has never happened and it is deliberate, having the likes of Obasanjo, Gowon and others is a game plan for us to achieve our vision 2020,” he added.

However, former Nigerian leaders, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Gen Yakubu Gowon, Chief Ernest Shonekan are among guests expected to grace the Academy’s 4th national.

Politics › Has Ibikunle Amosun Achieved Anything In Ogun State? by Mcfemad(op):
Senator Ibikunle Amosun, FCA will be a year in the next few days as the Executive Governor of Ogun State. I'm an indigene of the state and my family lives in the capital city, around this time, when Gbenga Daniel was at the helms of affairs, there were so many things to name as his achievement under one year.
Amosun's administration has of late come under criticims for having no notable/major achievements in one year of his administration, I also belong to this school of thought as there are no visible projects on ground other than:
Employment generation of some youths and adults which was heavily politicised.
Construction of Totoro-Sokori road which leads to his family house. This road is practically of no economic value as it has no business presence.
Distribution of free notebooks and textbooks to 'all' secondary schools in the state (methinks this is what the 20 LGs can handle).
Witchunting of the officials of the last administration through kangaroos commitee set up.

Nairalanders, I want us to critically examine this administration of Ibikunle Amosun and offer valuable discussions.
Thank you

Politics › Hollande Sworn In As French President by Mcfemad(op): 4:02pm On May 15, 2012
PARIS (AFP) – Francois Hollande was sworn in as France’s first Socialist president since 1995 on Tuesday at a solemn ceremony overshadowed by the debt crisis threatening to unravel the eurozone.

After brief ceremonies in Paris, the 57-year-old career politician was to dash to Berlin to confront Chancellor Angela Merkel over their very different visions as to how to save the single currency bloc.

France's president Francois Hollande waves to the crowd as he parades in a car on the Champs-Elysee avenue after being officially invested as France's president, on May 15, 2012 in Paris. AFP PHOTO

“Power will be exercised at the summit of the state with dignity and simplicity,” Hollande declared in an inaugural address to Socialist leaders, trade unionists, military officers, churchmen and officials.

“Europe needs plans. It needs solidarity. It needs growth,” he said, renewing his vow to turn the page on austerity and invest for the future, and implicitly underlining his differences with Merkel.

“To our partners I will propose a new pact that links a necessary reduction in public debt with indispensable economic stimulus,” he said.

“And I will tell them of our continent’s need in such an unstable world to protect not only its values but its interests.”

Hollande was also to make the much-anticipated announcement of who will lead his government as prime minister, with Jean-Marc Ayrault, the head of the Socialists’ parliamentary bloc, tipped as favourite.

The new president was welcomed to the Elysee Palace by his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy, who led him to the presidential office for a private head-to-head and to hand over the codes to France’s nuclear arsenal.

Then Hollande ushered Sarkozy to his car for a final farewell, outgoing first lady Carla Bruni exchanging kisses with successor Hollande’s partner Valerie Trierweiler, elegant in a dark dress and vertiginous heels.

Hollande then signed the notice of formal handover of power and headed back in to the palace ballroom.

No foreign heads of state were invited to what was a low-key ceremony for a post of such importance, leader of the world’s fifth great power.

After the swearing in, Hollande rode up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe in an open-topped Citroen DS5 hybrid, waving to the crowd.

But the real work was to begin later in the afternoon, when Hollande was to fly to Berlin from an airbase north of Paris, for tense talks with Merkel, the leader of Europe’s biggest economy and France’s key ally.

Merkel was a Sarkozy ally and the architect of the European Union’s fiscal austerity drive. Hollande opposed the speed and depth of the cutbacks demanded by Berlin, and wants to renegotiate the eurozone fiscal pact.

Germany is committed to budgetary discipline, and Merkel has repeatedly insisted since Hollande’s election that the pact, signed by 25 of the 27 EU countries and already ratified in some, is not open to renegotiation.

But observers say there is room for compromise, with Hollande likely to agree to additional stimulus measures without a rewrite of the pact.

And with political paralysis in Greece raising the spectre of the country being forced from the eurozone, the heads of Europe’s two largest economies will be keen to reassure worried markets they can work together.

New figures released Tuesday showed France’s economy still stagnant, with official statistics agency INSEE saying it recorded no growth in the first quarter of 2012.

The agency also revised downward the growth figure for the fourth quarter of 2011, to 0.1% from 0.2%, while maintaining that the economy grew by 1.7 percent overall in 2011.

Before he heads to Berlin, Hollande’s first order of business will be to nominate a prime minister, who will be tasked with forming a government before a first cabinet session likely on Thursday.

Ayrault, a 62-year-old longtime Hollande ally, is considered first in line for the job, but other names are circulating.

Once the cabinet is named, the focus will move to the Socialists’ campaign to win a parliamentary majority in June’s legislative elections — a key test for the party after Hollande’s win.

After the talks with Merkel, Hollande heads to the United States where he is to meet President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday ahead of back-to-back G8 then NATO summits.

NYSC › Nigeria Is Cash-strapped, Can't Pay Monthly State Allocations And NYSC Allowance by Mcfemad(op): 1:31pm On May 15, 2012
Sources in several state governments as well as the Federal Ministry of Finance have disclosed to SaharaReporters that Nigeria’s cash flow woes appear to be worsening. For the second month in a row, the Nigerian government was unable to meet the schedule for disbursing monthly allocations from the federation account to states.

Our sources accused President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration of depleting the country’s foreign reserves and recklessly overspending budgeted funds.

One source revealed that the Federal Ministry of Finance has paid March monthly allocations only to some states. The allocations for April and May 2012 remain unpaid. As a result of what some of the sources described as a major cash flow crisis, many civil servants and National Youth Corps members have yet to receive their April salaries or allowances.

In addition, the meeting of the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) has been postponed indefinitely after the secretariat said the earlier meeting scheduled for today and tomorrow was no longer feasible. SaharaReporters obtained a text message announcing the cancellation of the meeting. Sent by Philip K. Angulu, the terse message apologized to recipients for any inconveniences caused by the postponement.

SaharaReporters learnt that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has not been able to make regular payments to the federation accounts as oil marketers and corporation are now deducting their share of profit in offshore accounts to avoid dealing with local bureaucratic bottlenecks.

A source within the Presidency described Mr. Jonathan as a confused pawn in the hands of members of his security team who manipulate him to approve huge “security votes” for the so-called fight against terrorism. “Many of the president’s security advisers just keep deceiving him into releasing more and more cash to them – and they have nothing to show for it,” said the source.

Another source in the Central Bank told SaharaReporters that fuel marketers continue to defraud Nigerians with undocumented and fraudulent claims. “As we speak, I can tell you that the government has virtually spent this year’s budget for fuel subsidies – and we are only in the middle of May,” said the source. He added, “Nigerians are calling on President Jonathan to prosecute those who committed fraud in collecting fuel subsidies in the past. They don’t know that the fraud has actually increased this year.”

One of our sources accused Christopher Kolade, the chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment (SURE) Committee, of deliberately misleading Nigerians when he claimed that N60 billion has been saved for the implementation of the phantom palliative program put in place by Mr. Jonathan’s government to pacify Nigerians who thronged the streets of Nigerian and foreign cities in January to protest the removal of fuel subsidy. “Dr. Kolade knows that no such fund exists,” said the source, a ranking official in the federal government.

Politics › What Has Jonathan's Administration Achieved In One Year? by Mcfemad(op): 1:48pm On May 09, 2012
It is few days to mark one year in office of President Goodluck Jonathan. I was wondering what he has achieved in his one year in office. To me, there is absolutely nothing visible I can mention as his achievement (fulfillment of his campaign promises) to have benefited the common man on the streets other than plan, plans.

Nairalanders, Lets contribute and share thoughts on Jonathan's accomplishment in one year as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank you,
Romance › Re: I've Been Told That He Is A DOG!!!!! by Mcfemad(m): 8:11am On Apr 28, 2012
My dear, you need to wise up!
What are u doing with ds man when we have single responsible guys out there. Wise Up and Act Right!
TisaBone: There is this man that I am extremely interested in. I respected him, because he was able to bring himself out of the gutter, and free himself from the bondage of crime and jail and has become a successful businessman. He has a lot of ambition and drive, which I love , as well as this magnetic power emanating from him. The attraction was definitely mutual.

I went by his shop, and we talked for maybe an hour about many things. He knows that I am a Christian. He wanted to know what my dreams were, my goals for the future, and where I saw myself once I graduated college. He wanted to know why I was not in a relationship, and I told him because I was not willing to settle for just any old man. I made him laugh, and he made me laugh. He told me he was 32 with four kids, and 3 baby mothers, which scared me. I mean I was ready to run for the hills. But as he began to talk of his children, I could see the love he had for all of them, and I began to soften up once more, but at the same time my guard was still up because I know that sometimes men will talk of their children, to make themselves appear more wholesome than what they really are.

He knows how old I am, but as we were talking he picked up on the fact that although I was young, I had lived a little. He asked me why I went to church. I told him because I had problems, and I was trying to work them out with and for God so that I could become a better person.

As most men tend to do, he got a little fresh and asked could I come over and cook him dinner, once I revealed to him that I was a guru in the kitchen. I told him absolutely not, and he wanted to know why. I said because I was not ready. He said that he could respect that, and that was the end of that particular conversation. Once it was time for me to leave, I stood up, and couldn't take my eyes from him. He asked was I ready for a hug, and I sort of melted and said that I was. He took me in his arms, and his hands roamed all over my lower back, and my hips, and I could feel his hands hovering over my behind, but he stopped short. I never knew that just a simple hug could ****** not only my body, but my mind as well.

Fast forward to a couple of days later. I am talking to my aunt and cousin, about this new man I have met. I asked for prayer from my aunt, because I need to stay strong and the lady always. She wanted to know what his name was, and once I said it, my cousin turns around and is flabbergasted. According to her, this man is quite the player around town, and is known to dog women out. He may even have a girlfriend, but my cousin said she didn't know for sure. She told me to stay away from him because he was too old, and the only reason older men talk to young girls ( I'm always a child when its convenient, at other times I'm a grown up when it suits her purposes) is so that they can feel like they are doing something. My aunt chimed in and said I should ask him to pay my light bill and take me out to an expensive restaurant. She said that would get rid of him quick. It's ironic that she would suggest this considering that her own husband is an invalid who hasn't worked not one day in their ten year marriage. My cousin is a thirty something, unemployed, and bitter woman, who awaits the release of her on/off again boyfriend from prison so that they can be wed. She ridiculed me because he is shorter than me, but I don't care! according to her I'm "settling." I mean for God's sake I'm 5'11! alot of men will be taller than me, but he told me he loved my height, and that if we were ever to go out, that he definitely needed me in a pair of heels.

In my opinion both are bitter, but I can't totally discard what is being told to me. I'm scared and confused. He not once disrespected me in anyway, and seems to be accepting of all that I have told him. Is this information that I have received from my cousin a sign that I should leave this man alone? Should I walk away and never look back?

Family › Newborn Baby Found Alive In Morgue 12 Hours After Being Declared Dead by Mcfemad(op): 11:51am On Apr 12, 2012
A newborn in Argentina was found very much alive in a morgue by her mother 12 hours after hospital staff had declared the baby dead.

The mother, Analia Bouguet, tells TeleNoticias TV that the hospital still has issued her only a death certificate for the infant rather than a birth certificate. Bouguet said she is planning to pursue a medical malpractice suit.

The Daily Mail reports that the baby was Bouguet's fifth and was born prematurely.

Two hours after being issue a death certificate, Bouguet and her husband visited the morgue because they wanted to see their child one more time.

"The baby was there and they put the little casket on a stretcher. We looked for a bar to pry it open," the baby's father, Fabian Veron, said in a press conference. "My wife looked and uncovered it slowly. She saw the little hand and then uncovered the face. That's when it let the first little cry out."

"That night, we went to the morgue. We wanted to take a photo of our daughter," Bouguet told Argentina's Clarin newspaper. "But when a worker opened the drawer, we heard a cry and she was alive."

The newborn has been named Luz Milagros, or "Miracle Light." She is still listed as being in critical condition but is said to be improving. The deputy provincial health minister announced that five medical professionals involved in the case have been suspended, pending further investigation.
