Politics / My Solution To Nigeria's Problem Of Corruption by meetmeonline: 2:37pm On Jan 26, 2013
The problem with Nigeria cannot be corrected by a single person. No civilian can cause a change if he be given the opportunity to rule now. The level of corruption in the country has gone so deep that the best civilian president in the history of mankind cannot bring things to normal. They’ll tell him “Yes sir” and do “Mine sir”. I laugh when people say that our uncle “B” (form the north) will change things if given the chance; he’ll only go to Aso Rock to increase the percentage of his grey hair. When you sack the head of “HHPC”, who will you then appoint? An old officer who has always waited for a time to own houses abroad? Or a new-comer who will naively fall into the set-up trap of the angered subordinates in the corporation? Fighting corruption as a civilian ruler in Nigeria is like going to the centre of a stadium to arrow people who are armed within the seats…they’ll snipe you from all angle that you’d not tell which one hit you first…our solution can come if; “something serious happens to overhaul every public seat while the constitution and people are kept silent and a sound warning that it may happen again is given before normalcy is restored with a fresh cast of officers”…then Nigeria will be free. wink wink kiss cool

HABA MY PEOPLE!

A typical Nigerian will not do that, we are so intelligent.

ALL WE WOULD DO:

For males: Seek the ugliest female athletes from all countries of your choice and get talking to exchange contact with about five of them (they will definitely give you that audience seeing you as a fellow star from your continent). When you are back in the country, meet them online and tell them how great they were and how your family will love to meet them. The typical western families do not enjoy times with their sister/daughter in laws as we do and this keeps the white woman crazy about the African guy.
She will surely write to her ambassador here that she is crazy about you...WIFE DON COME...and you migrate as a king.

For females: Pass a note to all the white guys from countries you like saying "Have you f**ked a chocolate pu**y in your life?" (make it only one person per country cus guys discuss this whenever they are together) I bet only one out of twenty will ignore this and believe me none will report you. Also meet him online and send your wettest pictures to him (avoiding your face appearing in any)...He will come to Nigeria to marry you in Eko hotel, and you don turn Americana in style...Period!

My addictions. They change from season to stage. the few I can remember that affects me currently are

THOSE THAT GIVE ME FUN
Downloading materials form the internet to read later
Scrabble
Chewing groundnuts (can consume up to 500grams daily and can tell which one is good or salty form 100m away)
Searching in Google

THOSE THAT ARE DISGRACING ME
Picking up a topic of debate that turns the whole BRT bus into a debate forum (this is so strong that I am now known Lagos-wide) cry cry cry
Using the pidgin language everyplace, every time.
Looking back to view a woman's buttocks when she's good in the front while walking along the street.
Advising teenage girls (though it never never leads to anything)

WATCHING MOVIES.

I remember Nene used to sing so sweet when she washes her clothes down by the river side where the green grass grows. She used to call her playmates to join her in singing too *jobless girls*

It is a little vague to me now but I think I can remember some stuff in those old readers

Remember Ali and Simbi?

Ali and Simbi were children of Mr and Mrs Salami.
Simbi had this sungass kind of hairstyle and lived in a room that had a wooden bed all alone.

Remember Edet?

I can still remember the lines: Edet lives in Calabar, he is eight years old. Every morning, he goes to school and in the afternoon, he stays at home. His father buys he books from the bookshop

Also this line: Today is Friday, today is Friday, Edet and his cousins are eating rice and chicken. Can you see...

Edet had an uncle called Bassey (if I'm right) this uncle took him to Ibadan in a very long travel with "911-gwongworo"

Edet's dad used to own a shop with a fridge that had this Fanta logo on it

I think Edet also had an aunt called Nene...was she the one that got married sometime?

Education / Things You Must Consider Before Choosing A Tertiary Institution In JAMB-UTME by meetmeonline: 6:44pm On Jul 03, 2012
When it was our time, lack of orientation made us fumble woefully. We were jumping for the biggest name schools just to boast as undergraduates but never considered the little things that really mattered when choosing a higher institution for study.

For the benefit of the younger ones, I have decided to expose some points on the real stuff to be considered before selecting a school to ensure the candidate gets a pleasurable higher schooling.

In selecting a school for studies, you are to consider the following items.

The nature of entrance

The competitiveness in getting admitted into the department
This is the most important question to be asked. It gives a firsthand insight of what the candidates is bound to face in trying to win a space in the department. This inquiry is so important that it tends to give a boost to the prospective student to work harder during the UTME exams. Parents are advised to ensure the students visit campus to spur him or her up to work herder to get there. Study have shown that when one has a vivid picture of what he chases, he works harder and tends to do better to attain it

The O’Level requirement of the department
The Ordinary level requirement of a department may vary slightly amongst schools. Some schools may allow for the absence of a course while others may not. The candidates is to ensure that his or her O’Level qualification meets the prerequisite of the school he or she applies for. Where result is awaited, the candidate must ensure he or she has done well in the exams.

Other requirements
There may be also other requirement that may be strictly demanded by schools that the candidates must produce. Some of this document may be very difficult to get and may take months or years

The average number of student especially those in the first year
Knowing the average number of students in a department gives an insight on the number that is likely to be admitted the next time. This gives the candidate a comprehensive understanding of how the admission process will go in his own time. The prospective student is expected to find out how many actually applied to arrive to that number. The information the candidates gets from here will also expose how convenient it will be studying in his or her time.

Hint: the number of students that applied for the admission year in a department may be found in the JAMB UTME website

The studentship nature

The inherent problems faced in the department
Every department has got its advantage and disadvantage. This is best communicated by a current student of the department. The candidate is to give good listening ears to the other to know if any of the problems may seem unbearable. Some students are made to travel to far away campuses for lectures, others are made to stay overnight in the department. Every problem presented by the student must be assessed by the prospective student to see if conditions will be bearable.

The average cost of studying in the department
The study activities of a department directly translate the level of spending for the student. Courses that do a lot of practical, field, and studio work are relatively more expensive than enumerate and philosophical courses. This is because the student will have to bear the bills of purchasing the items needed for this purpose. The nature of study and the approach the department has taken in teaching and researching the course defines its activities and this determines expenses.

How study materials are sourced
Various schools have various traditions of sourcing study materials. Some are made available directly to the student, others are bought from the school's bookshop. There are also cases where students are forced to purchase books and materials directly from lectures at exorbitant prices with the gun of failure pointing to their result if they do not cooperate. The prospective student is to check this area to ensure his budget can match the expense.

The exit nature

The grading attitude of the departmental lecturers.
Some departments have lectures who forbid giving an “A”. Some departments in a school will hardly give a first-class to their graduating student. However this may sound, it truly exists in Nigerian schools. Lectures of older departments have worked together for a long time and have overtime built a tradition in grading their students. This is an important aspect of the student’s inquiry.

The average cost of activities outside academics
Other cost like accommodation and feeding expenses in living in or around the campus must also be checked. All these are checked to prepare the students mind and to ascertain if they are affordable to avoid having the student got distracted during studies in need to top up cash.

The length of study years, nature of exams and other training
The candidate is also expected to verify the length of time to be spent in the department and match with what he or she had earlier estimated. The nature of the exams may also be verified to prepare him or her mind for the task ahead. All these are important because it enables the student to know what to prepare for in the times ahead.

What is your take on the above...graduates may also teach more points from their hard experiences.

Nairaland / General / Goruping The Nigerian Higher Institutions by meetmeonline: 6:54pm On Jun 28, 2012
There are various interesting ways to group and regroup the Nigerian Tertiary institutions

According to age of existence

Pre-independence schools. These are schools that were founded during the colonial period. Some of the higher schools at that time were usually affiliates to schools in foreign countries mainly England and mostly offered foreign diplomas. But today, they have been converted into full fledged higher schools. They usually adopt the academic pattern of the school they were formally affiliated to.

First generation schools. This categorizes the higher institutions that were founded between 1948-1970. Most of the federal schools in Nigeria were set up as a result of the report of the Ashby commission of 1959 which was to advice the federal government on the higher education needs for the country in the first two decades. Most of these institutions have in the years, built a strong recognition nationally and internationally. The first generation higher schools are usually the most popular in the system and this has brought about a high rate of application yearly. It is more challenging to secure admission into a first generation university than the others.

Second generation schools. The third national development plan brought about the development of more tertiary institutions between 1975-1980. The schools set up within this period are referred to as second generation schools. Some schools found shortly after these periods are sometimes referred to as second generation schools but they are actually of the third generation.

Third generation schools. The third generation school were established mainly to complement the effort of other institutions established earlier. This is the period of birth for most technological schools existing today. Technological schools were set up in Nigeria at this period to boost national research for advancement in science and technology with the aim to bring prosperity and progress to the nation. Some state schools were also established within the boundaries of the state to alleviate her people from difficulties experience from the federal school.
Other generations emerged later e.g the burst of private schools but will not be discussed here

According to ownership structure

Federal government schools. The federal government of Nigeria intervenes in higher school education to cushion the effect of mass literacy. Higher schools are created by the federal government through decrees (in the military era) and Acts (in democracy). The schools are funded by the federal government and are known to be relatively the cheapest and to have more stable procedures and operations than the other schools.

State government schools. Due to cases arising from the scene of federal schools on how various natives were handled, state governments have set up their own higher schools to meet the higher education need of their state. State schools are relatively more expensive than the federal schools this is because the state does not get involved in funding their schools as the federal government does. Locals are considered greatly for admission into most state universities and fees are in some cases reduced for them.

Private schools. These are schools set up by the bodies or individuals other than the federal or state government. Private individuals, religious institutions and other bodies have come into the higher education problems by setting up higher institutions. The primary aim of setting up private institutions in Nigeria is to ease the admission problems experience from their public counterpart while earning revenue from fees. The private school is relatively the most expensive. Private schools are very unique in their quest to trying to train manpower for national development by a direct transition of knowledge rather than making them study while contributing to the pool of knowledge as traditional universities do. They have a very steady academic calendar that is not easily set back by strikes and are known to be more convenient in academic and accommodation facilities. Private

According to specialty

General/regular schools. Some schools have been set up to teach and research on every possible field of education as it deems fit. This must be restricted to only within the type of education qualification they award. General school usually offer a wide range of courses and are relatively larger in size and population. They are normally the most common in their area; this is because they tend to meet various study needs over time.

Science/Technical schools. These are schools set up to specialize in teaching and researching on science and technological related courses for national advancement. They offer a wide range of course options in their area than the general schools. Science and technology school usually have their names ending with “of science and technology”, “of technology” or “of agriculture”. Most of them have in recent times drifted a little to operate like general school by adopting departments related to to fields like management.

Schools of education: these are schools that teach and research in fields that train teachers, lecturers, educational policy makers, researchers and administrators. It is an institution that is seen as the factory of teachers. They build teachers and other administrators ready to coordinate the process of impacting education and transferring same to the younger generations. S

Vocational schools: these are institutions that offer certificate courses to their graduates in specialized fields. Their certificates are of very little popularity in various industry of the labour market but are very powerful in their industry of specialization. The duration of study in these institutes are relatively shorter and studies are stressed along a narrow faculty path. Vocational institutes are mainly referred to as Innovative enterprise institutions and graduates may be awarded a Diploma in the area studied

According to the qualification they award

Universities: These are institutions that teach and test candidates for the award of higher degrees and to conduct research in contribution to education and humanity. They offer courses that lead to the award of bachelors. Bachelors are referred to as first university degrees and they are important for their use in employment as a middle and lower administrator and as a prerequisite for the study of the Masters degree. A degree simply means a rank of education that is being awarded to students that have completed a higher level of education. Degrees are sometimes given as an honour to non-students for their great contributions or societal achievements
The university is the most preferred tertiary educational institution in Nigeria because of the Bachelors degree they offer. It is generally believed that a graduate with bachelors will be more successful after schooling than others and this has led to the large numbers that apply yearly. It is a real problem that this huge number is so much than our universities can carry and so there is always a serious competition in getting admission into the Nigerian University.
Note: Students applying for bachelors must wake to the reality of the great competition in its admission process and therefore should plan and prepare very seriously for it. A good percentage of UTME candidate do not get into higher school because they have applied for a university without good preparation in reading, having a good plan or strategy.

Polytechnics: These are also higher institutions that teach advanced educational and vocational courses. The polytechnics mainly award Diplomas of various ranks; the Higher Diploma and National or Ordinary National Diploma. A diploma equips one to serve in various fields as a supervisor and technician. The National or Ordinary National Diploma (popularly known as N.D or O.N.D) is awarded to successful candidates that completes the first two years in a course. After which he or she is expected to go for a year Industrial training as an attaché to acquire on-the-job training from the industry in his field. A successful completion of the Industrial Training prepares the candidate for the next two years of study where the Higher Diploma would be awarded on successful completion.
The polytechnics are not popular in Nigeria because of the perceived fact that their Diplomas are ranked lower than Bachelors amongst employers.
Note: Securing admission into the polytechnics in Nigeria is relatively easier. And outstanding performance in a course of study in this institution brings the candidate at per in consideration with a graduate of Bachelors

Colleges of education: These are institutions that make teachers. Because of their affiliation to some universities, some colleges of education award university degrees to students who have studied for an extended length of time. The basic qualification awarded by the college of education is a National Certificate of Education (NCE). This a two year study that equips one to teach in schools and educational centers. Bachelors of Education is a prerequisite to teach in some secondary schools while Masters of Education (MEd) and PhD is a prerequisite for an assistant lecturer and a lecturer respectively in a tertiary institution.
