@toba, Pls i need further clarification. In your post (which was really explanatory) u mentioned the part where God uses "we" and "us" to refer to himself. I have heard the argument b4 that in normal English usage, the use of WE is allowed for anyone great to refer to himself and that even kings now use it. It is called the "royal plural". I even checked the dictionaries and it's true. So how do we explain that. Thanx

PoliticsRe: U.S List Nigeria As "State Facing Enhanced Screening" by mendax: 10:29pm On Jan 04, 2010
Nigerians are constantly under terror of/from their state. so i think they r right. You live in terror of NEPA(PHCN) if u own a business that depend on electric power u will know what i mean, terror of the death traps called roads or highways (please say sincerely that u dont feel the fear when u travel on our roads), terror of police brutality, terror of press freedom, terror of getting ill due to sick hospitals, terror of unemployment, terror of fuel scarcity, terror of ,  terror of , , terror of, ,
@stiyke,
u know damn well that is not because of NEPA or bad roads that we were labelled as such. How does NEPA prob affect a Nigerian goin to the US? or are we the only nation havin problems with leadership? U k ow it is for fear of bombing and one bombin threat is what put us on that list. Or is there any of the other countries put on that list because of bad roads and light problem. Yes, we hav our problems in Nigeria and yes our leaders are failing on us, but NO the government is not encouraging so called terrorism. Mind u, the definition of terrorism in world politics today is mainly restricted to physical violence to promote a goal

calabar is considered the neatest city in the country, but that doesnt extend to the whole of crossriver ofcourse!

i saw that article. i was under the impression that "state sponsore" meant that the country sanctiones terrorism and encourages it. so does that qualify nigeria?
we hav seen more britons and US citizens carry ouit terrorist acts. eg, the alleged 7/7 attackers ar said to b britons and the US major that carried out an attack is also a US citizen. what of the US ex-convict that opend fire on police men while they were havin breakfast a week after the majors incident and many other cases. why would a country be blacklisted just for one incident. moreover, to say that the country encourages terrorism?

@labiyemmy
You certainly didn't factor in some variables before commenting on this thread.
Pray,do tell whether the registration of sims in ZA has reduced the crime rate in any magnitude.
The main purpose of sim registration is not to check crime rate,rather it is to determine the number of suscribers in the country as well as its population teledensity.
Banks collect data before they trancsact business with customers,has that checked fraud?
Schools collect data before they register you for external exams,has that checked malpractices?
FRSC collect data before they issue you driving license,has that stopped a 15year old from acquiring one?
If you think registration of sim cards in Nigeria is a way to curb crime rate in Nigeria,then why don't we let NCC do the job of NPF? undecided
u that is saying it hasnt checked the crime rate, what is ur source? how sure ar u that if the sims werent registered the crime rate wouldnt hav been more.

and u r sayin that the reason for registration is to know the number of subscribers on a network, that is ABSURD. whether the users are registered or not, so far u make calls, they immediately know, they know where u make the call from and they even know ur fone IMEI. pls dont mislead ppl on this thread. moreover, for the sake of argument, lets agree that the registration is to know how many ppl ar on the network, is it a bad thing? or whats wrong with havin more than one reason for carryin out an exercise?

u r even sayin that if the reason is to curb crime rate that we should let NCC do the job of NPF? i'm sure u havent read through this thread, how many times earlier has it been mentioned that, the data obtained frm the telecomms operators is just to assist the NPF in carryin out their mandate. EG, a kidnapper begins to call with a gsm fone asking for ransom, the NPF needs to contact the telecom operator (after obtaining clearance) to get the owner of the fone, and the location the call is made frm. abeg ppl should stop arguing unnecessirily! i hav personally seen such a case where it was later confirmed that the kidnappers were using a fone that belonged to the driver of the kidnapped chinese workers, and this happened in this country not sumwhere else. u know how? not by registration but by the IMEI number of the fone. the same IMEI was registered for his other sim card,

It should be clear by now that if that were the issue,it should start with already existing subscribers.They know they were talking for the fun of it that's why they want to start with new subscribers.
nawa wo, ofcourse they hav already started with old customers a long time ago. the telecomms operators were given that task to start getting details from there customers, and i am surprised ppl that comment on this topic havent heard of it!

@mayowaak, I agree too that he mad a blunder but not in the issue of the Hawaii location. I think his main blunder is that Obama is hail & hearty while out president is a very sick man. Moreover, I never knew there could be so much politics in a VP acting in the capacity of a president. The constitution is there. And if the VP cant act for the president or is not competent e ough, or evrything in the country needs to stop cos the president is sick, then there is no need for a VP in the 1st place!!

PhonesRe: Ncc Bars Sale Of Sim Cards On The Streets by mendax: 3:44am On Dec 31, 2009
So u think u ar registering ur car because it's expensive? In a system that's workin, if ur car plate is sighted in a crime scene or it's used to perpetrat a crime. They'll home on u. Same goes for the sim, it could b used to assist the NPF in their duties. Like sum1 posted earlier, we may not be there yet, but we are on our way. There are benefits for u the user like dis guy mentioned, but then there are also the benefits for the security agencies, which should translate to societal benefits of fighting crime and which would ultimately be of benefit to u again.

Imagine a scenario where every sim is registered (the ideal case, which we all know is not possible). No one can commit a crime with the gsm. Remember I'm just tryin to xplain benefits and not justifying whether registering all sims are possible or not.

Back to ur car issue, if registering ur car is important, which has a small outreach, what more of a gsm? Do u also know that all gsm conversation are recorded and kept including SMS by the gsm companies and can b recalled at anytime when required by the appropriate authorities? And I'm talkin of here in Nigeria not even other places? So just giv the project a chance

@dis guy, u r right and I like ur comment on airomon's post

@aieromon, at the risk of sounding like I don't care or I am rich, I feel that the main pro lem right now isn't for the telecomms operators to concentare on reducing the tariff. Don't get me wrong, they can reduce their tariff, but I even feel given the present circumstances in the country, they at even tryin. Do u k ow what it takes to run all their base stations 24/7 on generators. Our main problem is the issue of power in the country. Om the otherhand, they could intensify efforts in improving the quality of service, which is sumthin they can do effecit ely with the present resources at their disposal.

Goto some developed countries and compare charges, like in Uk or USA. In some countries U could hav a package were both the caller and receiver are been charged! Laws can't all be made at the same time, but since we are now at the bridge which concerns registering our sims (for our. Collective good) I believe we should support it. Even if only half the gsm users are registered, it's a forward step in the right direction.
PhonesRe: Ncc Bars Sale Of Sim Cards On The Streets by mendax: 2:43am On Dec 31, 2009
@puskin, yeah u ar right, but as dis guy pointed out, the retail outlets ar evrywher u do t need to really kill urself to ge to them. I agree that the scheme would b a hard task to Implement, but they could make a food attempt wit good marketing strategies like preventing. Maximum benefits instead of knocking u off completely. They could bring promos an say u can't benefit if u aren't registered. Though me & u know that a criminal who WANs to perpetrate a crime doesn't giv a damn about promos.

The challenges though ar many. For eg, in developed countries they could actually keep a track of a registered customer. If u change an address, they know. Infact in the Uk u can't buy a tv without govin ur address. Ofcourse that's not the case in 9ja, once u decide to move ir home, even if ur registratn details were correct, u don't need to sign any agreement wit anyone b4 rentin or buyin a house. So u could technically disappear. My 3 Nigerian sims were registered wit the operators, So I don't really hav a problem wit their new law, but if we had a functioning system that wasn't disjointed, were all arms of govt & sectors are workin together, this task doesn't need to be only on the telecomms operators. We had National ID card exercises, voters registration, e-passport exercise and in these cases pple gave their contact numbers and were stored in datbases, it would just be an issue of cross references and then atleast a sizeable number of sim owners would be known.

If on the otherhand it's another un4tun8 selfish exercise wit underlying motives, like sum ppl hav pointed out ( and which cannot b ruled out in Nigeria) then , sad
PhonesRe: Ncc Bars Sale Of Sim Cards On The Streets by mendax: 1:17am On Dec 31, 2009
@puskin, y should he delete Uk frm d list. Ofcourse if u walk into O2, virgin or any of the main networks, they must take ur registratn details whether it's post paid or prepaid service u want. However, u can stil buy those simcards without registratn in small shops.

@all,
I hope that this thing works cos I believe the laws are made in good faith. However, I want all contributors to note that this law was not just given to the telecomms operators. A long time ago they were informed to get the details of their customers and they hav been doing just that. So it's not as if they hav only 3 mths to come up with the whole details. And like some1 posted earlier, they could easily block the SM of unregistered customers. The question now remains to be asked, would the telecomms companies be dedicated enough to take such drastic measures? Don't 4get it's the money they are after. Especially if they know the Nigerian system can't detect whether they at ensuring the registration. If it was another country, I would hav been more confident if the success of the operation, lookin bak at the recent similar incident in India were millions of subscribers were blocked because they were warned to stop using china cones that had no traceable IMEI numbers. I hope this operation works sha
