Islam › Re: Backbiting, Slandering And Amassing Of Wealth: Lessons From Surah Al Humazah by merits(m): 12:40pm On Dec 09, 2022
Lukgaf:
FROM THE NOBLE QUR’AAN
SURAH AL-HUMAZAH (THE SLANDERER)
Surah: 104:

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

1. Woe unto every backbiter and slanderer.
2. Who amasses wealth and counts it.
3. He thinks that his wealth has immortalized him
4. Never! He will definitely be thrown into the Crusher.
5. And what would make you know what the Crusher is?
6. It is Allah’s kindled fire,
7. That would reach right to the hearts
8. It (the fire) would engulf them
9. In pillars stretched forth.

COMMENTARY

The surah opens with grave warnings for three sins which we find common nowadays. These sins are backbiting, deriding or mocking others and the hoarding of wealth. The surah moves on to describe the plight of those who indulge in these vices which will be the blazing fire of Jahannum that will consume and devour them to such an extent that they will be totally ruined.

How often do we find ourselves caught up in the evil snares of backbiting and slandering, whether it is at the home of someone, a function or shopping centres and, sadly, this scourge has crept into out funerals also. Have we realized just how easily we fit ourselves snugly in these gatherings and thereafter become generous contributors to the gossip that is doing it’s rounds? The evil practice of hoarding wealth is also condemned by Allah Ta’ala. Have we ever given thought to the fact that no one before has ever taken the worldly possessions that was amassed in his lifetime into his grave? This evil also brings about miserliness in a person so much so that, let alone helping others, one is miserly with regards to spending on oneself and one’s family also. Allah Ta’ala has also cursed such people.

Am I a fool?

It is reported from Abu-Hurayra Radiyallaahu anhu that Rasulullaah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Do you know who is a bankrupt person?” They (i.e. the Sahaaba Ridwaanul laahi alaihim ajmaeen) replied, “The bankrupt one amongst us is the one who has neither a Dirham in his possession nor any goods.” He (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “The bankrupt person from my Ummah is he who will come on the Day of Qiyaamah with Salaah, fasting, Zakaat but it will also be that he had sworn at so and so, accused so- and- so, usurped the wealth of so-and-so, shed the blood of so-and-so and hit so-and-so person. So they (i.e. the victims of his opression) will be given from his good deeds until his good deeds are depleted without the full judgment being taken. Thereafter, their (i.e. the victims) will be taken and loaded upon him until he will be cast in the Fire of Jahannum.

How often are we rewarding others with our good deeds and burdening ourselves with their sins? Are we not making our enemies our “well-wishers” in reality? We are doing those whom we hate a great favour by paving for them an easy pathway to Jannah while simultaneously paving the road to destruction for ourselves.

In the light of the above Hadeeth, we should be asking ourselves after indulging in the vile act of gheebah, “Am I not being foolish?” Would I intentionally, in this world give away my valuables and even more foolishly, to my enemy? No person in his or her sound state of mind would do such a thing. But am I not doing exactly the same? Many of my acts of sincere Ibaadah, in reality, belong to someone else. I have made myself only a temporary custodian of these as they will be of no benefit to me on the Day of Qiyaamah when I would be needing them most- if I busy myself with gheebah, slandering and mocking others.

Respected Reader! Gheebah and slander are spiritual self-destructors. Allah Ta’ala and His Rasul Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam have condemned these acts in the strongest of terms and cursed those who indulge in them.

SO DON’T BE A FOOL BY GIVING AWAY YOUR GOOD ACTIONS TO YOUR ENEMIES!

May Allah Ta’ala protect us from the evil acts of gheebah and slandering and also those gatherings wherein these acts are perpetrated, Aameen.

Islam › Re: The Object Of Life: In An Islamic Way? by merits(m): 12:38pm On Dec 09, 2022
Lukgaf:
The expedition of Tabook was looming ahead. Madinah Munawwarah was in the grip of famine. The Muslims had merely a few animals available for riding. Provisions were extremely low. Yet, an army of thirty thousand Sahaaba had to be equipped to undertake this expedition. Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) stood on the mimbar (pulpit) and encouraged the Sahaabah to contribute towards the expenses of equipping the army. On this occasion Sayyiduna Uthmaan contributed six hundred camels together with their saddles. According to some narrations he also contributed fifty horses and one thousand gold coins.

To truly understand the reality of this contribution, one should bear in mind that owning a riding camel in those days was no less than owning a luxury vehicle in these times. If one estimates the value of one camel in those days, it is equivalent to millions of naira. Add a few more millions for the six hundred saddles, the fifty horses and the one thousand gold coins.

Thus our leader Uthmaan’s contribution in this expedition alone amounted to millions of naira. Apart from this he contributed large sums of money on many other occasions. It can thus be easily ascertained as to how wealthy he was.

Two situations:

ENTIRE QUR’AN

While taking note of the immense wealth that he owned, it is also vitally important to note that he did not earn his wealth by hankering after the world. He did not work from “seven to eleven” or “eight to late.” Rather, he was more engaged in the company of Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and in the service of Deen. Let alone missing any salaah entirely, or missing any salaah with jam’ah, it cannot be proven that he even missed one takbeere oola (the first takbeer with the Imaam) or one sunnah due to being occupied in any business matter. It is also recorded that he used to regularly recite the entire Qur’an in his witr Salaah . He earned what was decreed for him without chasing after material wealth. Furthermore, his wealth was not splashed on living in the lap of luxury, or on five star holidays and the like. Instead, he earned his Jannah with his wealth. He was among those ten fortunate souls who had been given the glad tidings of Jannah while they walked on the earth.

Uthmaan was not alone. He was one of several Sahaabah (R.A.) who were very wealthy. Yet, their wealth was not an obstacle to Deen. While they owned great fortunes, their hearts and minds were attached to the Hereafter. They were hence successful in this world and earned the everlasting bounties of the Hereafter as well.

DESPAIR AND SUICIDE!!!

This is the picture on one side. The opposite picture is extremely bleak. A researcher, Lewis Lapam, studied fifty of the richest U.S. families from 1900 to 1960. He concludes his findings in the following words:“I noticed that with few exceptions the lives of the heirs are marked by alcoholism, suicide, drug addiction and despair.” Owning billions yet despair? Possessing every luxury and comfort that money can buy yet suicide ? Sounds strange? It is nevertheless the tragic reality in the life of many a person, despite him “floating on wealth”. Such people have indeed lost the world and the Hereafter.

What is the reason for such an extreme contrast between the two situations?

While such situations are often due to a combination of numerous factors, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the primary cause is the following:

The first group, despite owning great fortunes, never made the acquisition of wealth their object of life. Instead the object of their lives was to acquire the love and pleasure of Allah Ta`ala, fulfilling His commands and establishing His Deen on earth. Hence their lives revolved around Deen. Deen dictated everything in their lives including the acquisition of wealth.

The second group made the world and its possessions their objective. As a result their lives revolved around the acquisition of wealth. The world, its wealth, its comforts and luxuries, its glitter and glamour and everything associated to its material nature is temporary and perishable. Hence, those who made something perishable their objective — everything they aspired for perished. Their happiness, peace, tranquility, contentment, and most of all, the opportunity to acquire the everlasting bounties of the Hereafter were all lost. Thus, the deceptive cover of apparent happiness and a life of luxury and affluence was in reality a life of utter misery. May Allah Ta`ala save us all.

The root of the problem lies in making the world one’s objective. To the extent that this will happen, accordingly one will suffer loss in this world and, Allah forbid, in the Hereafter. Therefore, the world must never be allowed to become the objective. Nevertheless the utterly deceptive glitter and glamour of the world will constantly be attacking every heart and this dunya will try to make itself the objective of every person’s life. In order to treat the malady and protect oneself from becoming enslaved by the world, and from the resultant destruction, it is necessary to be always alert for the symptoms which indicate that the world is becoming the objective.

Some of the symptoms that one should look out for are the following:

Intention: Why does one go to work? Does one “earn to live” or “live to earn.” While one’s aspirations revolve around Deen, if one goes every morning to earn a halaal living in fulfilling the command of Allah Ta’ala, one’s object of life is Deen. It then does not matter whether one earns a thousand Rands or a billion Rands. If one’s aspirations are the dunya (world) and fulfilling the command of Allah Ta’ala does not even cross the mind, the object is the world.

Time: If a reasonable and moderate amount of time is spent to earn one’s livelihood while the rest is dedicated to one’s Deen and one’s family, the object is Deen. If it is the opposite, the alarm bells of the love of dunya should be ringing. Likewise, out of business time, what is one’s mind generally pre-occupied with? While relaxing, falling-off to sleep, driving, eating… and even during one’s ibaadah, what does one think of? Does the mind generally remain pre-occupied with dreaming of ways and means to expand the empire and acquire the luxuries of life, or is the mind by and large engaged in what will acquire the Hereafter? If the former applies, the big red lights signaling danger should be flashing.

Action: In earning one’s wealth as well as spending it, is one most concerned of upholding the laws of Allah Ta’ala, or is the greater concern to “do the deal” even if the laws of Allah Ta’ala are compromised or flagrantly violated? In the first case, Deen is the objective and the wealth earned is a blessing. In the second case, the world is the objective. It is a beautiful-looking snake which will sink its fangs deep into the heart. Its poison will make life a misery even if one may be “floating on wealth.”

Therefore, let us stop for a moment and reflect: Is our objective Deen or the world? If we find that the dunya to Deen has become the objective, let us repent and come back to Allah Ta’ala. The doors of repentance are wide open to welcome those who sincerely turn to their Creator. Also, keeping the company of the pious and dedicating time to serving Deen will help to change our direction from

May Allah Ta’ala grant barakah in the rizq of every Believer and help us all to make Deen our object of life. Aameen.

Family › Re: 50-Year-Old Nigerian Shares Her Regrets About Her Parents Sending Her Abroad by merits(m): 9:48pm On Nov 30, 2022
Familyplug:
A 50-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN WOMAN SHARES HER REGRETS ABOUT HER PARENTS SENDING HER ABROAD TO SCHOOL AS A TEENAGER.

I came to the UK in the 80s and went to Skinners school for girls in Stamford hill where I failed woefully. I come from a family where going abroad was like going to the market for us. I lived with my sister-in-law who I happened to have appeared to as a burden at the time. I had no one to take me out as a child, didn't enjoy McDonald's treats. I remember being bought KFC once by my mother's younger sister who was in the UK at the time. Most days I had to walk from Pembury estate, Hackney to Stamford hill because I had no transport fee. An uncle got me free school meals from the government so I always had lunch at school but other meals were not guaranteed...

No one ever asked me how I was doing in school even though I was a failure, never disclosed my report sheet because my results were always 'U- Unclassified' worse than F9. I lived at the expense of a few of my brother's friends who were ready to give me £5 in exchange for me seating on their laps whilst they used my nipples as a toy. On a few occasions, my immediate family would give me £5, £10 but NONE EVER TOOK ME ON AS HIS OR HER RESPONSIBILITY. One glorious day, a brother of mine took me on when he noticed that I have been associating with friends that were smoking and sexing at the age of 12 but due to malicious beating every day I had no choice other than to run away from his house. ....

I became streetwise, smoking heavily at the age of 11/12, and did my first abortion at the age of 14/15. I was unable to contact my mother because I had no access to the telephone moreover I didn't know how to use the phones then. I lived with a Jamaican friend who was a few years older than me and we had a man friend aged 50t who was impotent but would pay our rent whenever we allowed him to lick/suck us. Hhhhmmmm I'm sobbing as I'm writing this; I don't know why my spirit has led me to share this horrific and pathetic story but I am sure it is to bless someone out there so I am not ashamed of letting it out because someone outthere will think twice before making the mistake my family made.

I and friends began to find it easy to befriend men for money at night clubs (Gullivers, Petter Stringfellows, etc) at a very young age which I found disgusting, they molested my body orally. I can't even carry on expressing my bitter past experiences because I have learnt to see them as the strengths that made me who I am today...

The Koko of this post is this... Now in the UK, we see Nigerian children killing, shooting, stabbing, selling drugs, raping, etc and we wonder why they are ridiculing our darling country's name... Hhhhmmmm it is not the kids' fault it is the fault of the parents that weren't ready to prioritize their priorities.

I can't blame my mother and neither can I blame my father because they thought sending me abroad to school was the best for me. They also trusted my siblings and didn’t like to get involved in the way they were raising us. They believed when you give a goat to someone, you let go of the rope. They didn't know their darling daughter had become something else.....

You may be boosting that your child lives in London, America, etc but do you ever ask yourself how life is treating them where they are??

So many parents in Nigeria believe the field is greener on the other side forgetting that NO ONE CAN TRAIN YOUR KIDS THE WAY YOU CAN EXCEPT LOVING & GOD-FEARING PEOPLE.

In the UK so many Nigerian parents have misplaced their priorities, they rather work 24/7 and make all their monies to build mansions in Nigeria at the expense of their children's lives.

So many Nigerian parents in the UK don't even attend parents' evenings at their kid's school, some can't even help their kids with homework. Some believe their kids are at home and they are safe not knowing who is there with them. Some would rather spoil their kids with money & expensive outfits instead of investing quality time in them.

Sending your kids abroad to be looked after by someone else is a pure waste of time and bringing your kids from 9ja without giving them all the time needed is an irresponsible move and to be working all God-sent hours, making sterling, dollars, and euros, naira, etc without spending quality time with your kids is a disgrace to parenthood.

This is one of our bad irresponsible cultures even back home ….most children in Nigeria were brought up by housemaids/gatemen/next door/grandmothers/neighbors etc. Some Nigerians don't believe in family planning rather they will have so many children and start using them to hawk sweets, bread, etc after school...

Having a child is not by force, God did not say YOU MUST HAVE CHILDREN, YES HE STATED 'MULTIPLY' but he didn't mean we should do it to suffer for them. Having children does not mean you will live your life joyfully and it doesn't give you a place in heaven either, instead, your children may make you miss heaven if care is not taken.

I am a product of a neglected, nonchalant, cultural upbringing and I WILL NEVER WISH IT ON MY GREATEST ENEMY BECAUSE I HAD IT ROUGH AND IN SADNESS.

Let us stop being selfish and stop pushing our problems/burdens on others. Your child should be with you no matter how poor or rich you are and you must teach them in the ways of God.

Some parents in Nigeria, have children in Diaspora and know nothing about their life , only the fact that their child is abroad.
With all your plenty grammar now,how are your parents?have contact them so far?or you are still hiding?
