Hmmmm, you've not seen anything.

I have been on night duty with two ward maids who doubles as my assistants, with three patients in active phase of labour.
I have delivered babies with Nokia torchlight strapped on my hairnet, sutured perineal tears with kerosene lanterns.

No wonder my professional colleagues are writing NCLEX-RN, GFNS, TOEFL and other exams with acronyms I can't remember just to get at of this hellhole.

@topic, nurses are always at the receiving end because they are at the forefront of health service delivery.
Not just nurses even ne Medical school grads are on their ay out, Most of those I know are onto IELTs immediately after grad.

PoliticsRe: FG Plans N8tn Budget For 2016 by mickey45: 6:01pm On Nov 06, 2015
nwanna89:
If budget is 8 trillion, govt should try to spend more on capital projects. Lot of decay in infrastructure esp roads. Also i noticed Osinbajo seems to have been put in charge of economic affairs. While he is a well-read man, he is lawyer and is not an expert in that area. So i hope Buhari has plans to put one of the more qualified ministerial nominees in charge of drawing up a budget.

Maybe with 8 trillion naira budget, FG really does have plans to pay 5k and feed school kids
That he's a lawyer doesn't make him any less a good macroeconomist.
Awolowo read commerce and that even by distance learning. Go find out how prosperous the old Western Region was under him.
So all it takes is a willing mind.
I studied Engineering in School myself but I can still talk of a somewhat average grasp of economic realities.

Flets:
This government should be reminded that elections are over. Enough of these noises as reality have set in already.

Lets do some simple mathematics.
Nigeria's total crude production currently hovers at 2M barrel per day, but I will assume 2.5M barrel for sake of optimism
Crude oil sells at slightly above $40/ barrel but I will assume $45/ barrel
Most JV agreements with Oil corporations stands at an average of 60% for Nigerian govt.
Cost of production of oil for most companies stand at almost 50% but I will assume 30% (optimist case) and then 70% profit
Only about 52% of total earnings goes to the FG, the remaining goes to state allocations and host state derivation
Assuming an exchange rate 200 naira per dollar and 365 days a year

Federal Government can make approximately 1.8 trillion naira from crude sales for 2016 optimally. Details below
so 2.5Million x $45 x 60% x 70% x 52% x 200 x 365 = 1.8 Trillion Naira

Historically, crude has formed about 70% of our budgets.... following same logic, total budget can only be 2.6 trillion Naira (1.8Trillion/ 70%)

Even if we increase taxes, collapse all tax and duty exemptions and without any diversification efforts by the current government, we will be lucky to add another 1trillion the 2.6 trillion to make it a maximum of 3.6 trillion.

So realistically speaking, 8 trillion FG budget is impossible for 2016. Propagandically speaking, APC govt have said it and they believe their zombies will believe it.

In addition, APC FG has claimed that 2016 budget will be developed through zero budget based budgeting. Now without ministers who are supposed to draw up the budget components within their ministries ..... how exactly did Osibanjo come up with 8 trillion when zero based budget was the agreed method?

And for those quoting revenues from Gases- NLNG; Inflow from Royalties (Oil and Gas and other ones); Non- Oil revenues; Custom Duties; Fines and Penalties; Licenses etc...... You need to understand that these are not new revenue sources, they have always been there and only contribute about 30% of the budget while crude sales provides the rest. Y'all need to learn, crude earnings - 70%; non-crude earnings - 30%. As such, estimated budget of 2.6 trillion had that all included if non-crude contribution remains at 30%.
Well, the man made an audacious statement I agree, but he's not a man of words, so he must have something up his sleeves.
Let's wait and see.... So long as they won't come next year and start the blame game they've been at recently all over.

40% may be low but if implemented to the letter, it should make more impact on the citizenry than 60 or more % where over 3/4 of which ended up in private pockets and offshore accounts.

I was a guest at a party organized by one of the bigwigs as far as politics is concerned is in the country.

We were doing our thing........drinking expensive wines and dancing to music by some of best Nigerian artistes when suddenly a big coaster bus drove into the expansive compound with two police escort vehicles.
We were just wondering who the passengers were only to discover that the bus was filled with young girls.

The oldest among the girls should not be more than 23....I believe most the girls were sourced from secondary schools. I came to understand that some of the Aides to these big men normally arrange for these young girls on the instructions of there Principals whenever they want to host their friends.

The Oga on whose compound we were partying just came out and selected some of the girls and took them inside. He then said to us "Guys pick anyone you like and go enjoy yourselves".

I was not able to sleep throughout that nite.....These are men who have daughters of the same age with the ones they are sleeping with.
These are men that most young people see as role models.

I lost my respect for these so called "elder statesmen" that nite.
It's a pity how low we've sunken in this country, you'd such men will have some honour but alas!
But Awolowo wasn't wrong when he said said: “The trouble

in the position of leadership and rulership are spending whole days and nights carousing in clubs or in the company of men of shady characters and women of easy virtue, I like a few others, am always at my post working hard at the country’s problems and trying to find solutions to them”

You then wonder how people whose idea of relaxation is as described above can really have the time for critical thinking that real Nation-building requires.

100% Percent right. I am against any form of dictatorship. I am all for constructive opposition. Wishing Nigeria and Nigerians well.
Constructive opposition seems to have died with the second republic, while then, for every Government policy they oppose, they'd come up and advocate a pragmatically better method of achieving the said aim or sound reasons for discarding such train of action(s).

I see whatever opposition we've had since 1999 as mere noisemaking and attention seeking.

Nigeria's entire institutions need overhauling, not just the health sector.
It's pitiable, the fact that you have to be on the lookout for yourself for almost everything just makes it difficult for even professionals to concentrate and fully commit to their jobs without having to go see to some side hustle.
Government Hospitals are the worst for it. Went to one some years ago, you won't believe the ward walls were all cracked up.

Oando Share Price closed at 9.96 (-4.23%) as at 23/10/15
I expected it, no thanks to both their latest acquisition as well as the spiralling oil price.
But they've also added some new and profitable arms recently, take the CNG business for instance.
Capital expenditure on such ventures will also further dip their profit but things should start improving by Q3- Q4 plus oil seems to have started climbing lately too (albeit slowly)m

Not necessarily, PMB will have to leave this job to real Macro-economists, else we're heading for a cliff.

Soludo's actually good at this but I doubt they'll let him in.
The other person good at this will be Basil Enwegbara but they're both far from the geographically "upper pole" of the country and Soludo's Godfathered.
I did say it that outright banning of imports is too cosmetic unless accompanied with serious import substitution drive.
But neither the presidency nor the lawmakers are currently after the nation's interest.
They're still busy bickering over who gets what. One's forced to ask if their so-called screening/ interview can stop any of the nominee from clinching whatever portfolio the president has for them.

In Nigerian society, many believe that the end justifies the means, e.g becoming a prof. invalidates any
allegation of scholarly fraud against an academic also occupying a political office raises an individual above
criticisms.
The whistle blower knew the consequences of his noble actions before embarking on them and

Finally, my initial posts though blunt were actually satirical.
I saw the satire, what I was against is the chance of those who won't. Say teenagers.

Fabrication, falsification and plagiarism is not uncommon amongst such people.
Prof. Expecting some punitive measure(s) against the woman will only hold if all the members of the supposed "disciplinary Committee" aren't guilty of the same offense.
Going by the looks of it, this doesn't seem to be the case. Hence their tacit support of the woman. She might've threatened not to go down alone.
So it becomes a case of who's fit to cast the first stone.

Women learn almost all their bad habits from men, so she was introduced into the practice by someone(s) in that same school.
Punishing her would therefore only open up grounds for to investigate and expose all the others yet to be caught and she might rat on them if they don't protect her now.

@ mickey45: I'm following this thread. It's really disheartening. Nigeria, including its academia, has deteriorated to the point that what its current crop of citizens do is glorify and celebrate mediocrity. The vast majority of Nigerian academics are incompetent and laughing stocks at international conferences.
Your position isn't too far from the truth, although there are still a good number of true and genuine academics around.
"Publish or die" is a common lingo in this circle. This is because the number of published works is a criteria for promotion in most tertiary institutions.
Not necessarily patents, industrial/field contributions etc.
This in part explains the high rate at which most of them churn out journal papers (albeit "shallow" ones).
Knowing the gap between our current standard and that of our contemporaries abroad, I had to defer an agreement made with an academic mentor of mine to work on journal papers while on NYSC (I actually have seniors who wrote up to seven-ten within that year alone) now,
But I just have this belief that a single ground-breaking paper is worth more than a hundred junks.
But the Nigerian values the number of published works. Than their quality.
This mind you is a system where
i. Researchers (especially those in Applied Sciences and Engineering) often have to send their samples abroad for analyses. Often with their own money.
ii. Research funds are allocated 'nepotically'
ii. Lecturer-student ratio is far below semi-unity
iii. A single lecturer might have to tutor 3-4 courses to 3-4 different levels minus other"official assignments"
Iv. Average pay is often less than 200k where as the same guy could be getting more than that as scholarship stipends if he's studying abroad.
Vi. Same guy stays in a country where 70-80k is just about enough to sustain a single person for a month, not to talk of an entire family earning 200k/mo.
No country. Has ever grown without shoring up her knowledge base. America and China both survive more on their human capital than any other resource.
But "Oyel" seems to have blinded us.
But "this generation will pass away" says the good Lord, we'll all soon realise what we shd've been pursuing.

As you have seen just now though, there are still a handful of them who know their onions but again as you've seen, they get so stifled by the others that they often get out of it in anger
Hope your weekend's been fun?

This woman has done nothing wrong for sticking to her faith and belief, unfortunately, this is something most of us cannot do. Have you ever heard of "DNR" Do not Resuscitate Order? It is your right to refuse any form of treatment. I am very proud of her!

Secondly, this woman died of complications from a Cesarean Section, the hospital ought to be sued for that. The hospital should have prepared for auto-transfusion knowing her religious beliefs (having her donate her own blood few months t weeks before the surgery). Beside, from the story there is no evidence that she died from anemia. She died from Sepsis which can lead to DIC and finally ARDS.

In well developed countries, spiritual beliefs of patients are taken into account and respected. I am not a Jehovah Witness, but I hate blood transfusion especially from paid donors and will refuse it. I plan to have my kids through c/s, I will bank my blood before the elective.

You all should stop condemning her because she has done nothing wrong. I have seen many people die even during and after receiving transfusion.
