She is already desensitized to pain, so beatings and other forms of physical punishment will achieve nothing. For her to boldly buy those things with your money while you were still around and also boldly lie that the dad gave her the money despite knowing you could go verify from him means she fears no punishment.

The parents should seek the professional help of a Child therapist as she can be helped with behavioural therapy.

Discussing issues with your wife as a man does not mean seeking permission. Having someone from the extended family to come live with the couple, be it from the man's side or the woman's side needs to be extensively discussed by the two because the presence of such relative in their home will alter things in terms of finance, sleeping arrangement, feeding, loss of personal space as there are things a couple can no longer spontaneously do because of the presence of a relative in their home etc. For there to be peace in the home, both of them need to be on the same page regarding it

Most times, having siblings come live with a couple has kind of caused strains in marriages and it is not even healthy! Couples if they are in a position to, can contribute in helping their siblings in settling in else where.

In a nutshell, you learn from everyone everywhere. Well, that's a good thing.

But you reminded me of what I have once read somewhere about how our brain works. When we tell ourselves or children not to do something (Don't eat chocolate./Don't smoke./Don't drink./Don't spend so much money./Don't nag.), our brain does not pay attention to the don't but the verb eat (chocolate), smoke, drink, spend, nag etc. and so we do exactly the thing we were trying to avoid. Instead we should be telling ourselves what to do, e.g. eat healthy/fruit/vegetables, you get the idea.

In other words, avoid the negatives or at least rephrase them into positives.

In the context of the thread and with reference to the guy you quoted, we could tell ourselves to speak words of affirmation to our spouse instead of telling ourselves 'don't nag' or 'I won't nag'.

You are right, rather than focusing on the "don't" redirect it to "do" because that is positive reinforcement, a poweeful behaviour modification technique.

Your personal safety should be paramount not patriotism.
