ademusiwa3:The Colony of Lagos was incorporated into the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria in 1906. Anthony Enahoro was born in 1923. I was making reference to his call in 1953 for Nigerian independence. |
aresa:I didn't call anyone the best governor. I just pointed out that what you said is not true. And you have added more untruths by claiming that all of the things that I've listed are incomplete. Why can you not make your point without making abusive statements? It is possible to refute what a person says without attacking an individual. |
All of those guys are useless yet influential. Nigeria needs a third political party with bonafide principles and a younger, untainted leader like Donald Duke. Not these clowns. |
aresa:It has been a lot more than just a few roads, Akpabio has put in place a plan to fully connect all localities within the state, connecting formally isolated communities with bridges and building roads to an exceptional standard. On that point I must stress the importance of building a road correctly the first time around instead of doing a poor job and then having to pay again for it to be redone in a few years. AKS roads have been built largely by Julius Berger to the highest specifications, this is in stark comparison to Lagos where Arab Contractors have built roads in the past few years that already look to be in bad shape and exposed drainage on both sides. A system of underground storm drains has been put in place in Uyo with a plan to increase the network across the state. A specialist world-class hospital has been built in Uyo that is close to coming into operation. One of the best hotels and golf courses in the country is now in Uyo - which is much patronised by those who reside in Abuja (in particular) and elsewhere. The University of Uyo is now in much better shape than it was previously. Don't get me wrong, I am very fond of parts of Lagos but to compare AKS and Lagos you have to remember what each of them inherited - AKS is not even 30 years old (it was created at the same time as Katsina) and Uyo was not in good shape when Akpabio came into office, meanwhile Lagos is the former Federal Capital. What Akpabio has done has been good but there are questions as to how much wastage there has been. My hope is that in time Nigerians will learn how to govern themselves without abusing their power - we must remember that this experiment with 'democracy' is not even 20 years old but from what I've seen of Nigeria nowadays to what it was in 1999 and 2001, things are significantly better. P.S. Is there a good reason why Lagos still does not have a viable football stadium to host international games? |
ademusiwa3:Anthony Enahoro, from my understanding, asked for an independent western region only because the elements from the northern region did not desire independence, which was still the case up until 1960. The British knew this and also knew why hence their condition that Nigeria could only become independent as a singular unit. |
Gbawe2:Lagos is definitely looking better but there have been issues during his tenure - namely the Lekki toll gate fiasco, Lekki land ownership concerns, the Light rail project and the dramatic LASU fee increases. There are questions as to what is going on behind the scenes as pertains to himself and Tinubu that need to be answered. I'm glad that Lagos is making strides forward but that should not absolve anyone from being made to account for their decisions, nor should any citizen be afraid to ask questions. |
Why did the OP claim this has come from Edo people when it mentions what that the Yorubas are not happy? |
Is it just me or does his English sound significantly better back then? Less of a heavy accent, more refined. What happened since? |
okeke00:You shouldn't simply take someone's word that what they are saying is true - especially when they have no proof. To do so is irresponsible. |
resty4:Those are the words of yet another nut-job pastor claiming that an eclipse is somehow a sign of god's vengeance. |
A London council has launched an investigation into allegations that pupils at a primary school were banned from watching today’s solar eclipse “for religious reasons”. Children at the North Primary School in Southall, which is non-religious, were allegedly told not to watch the eclipse for fear of offending religious parents, according to the Evening Standard. Phil Belman, who has a seven-year-old daughter at the school, was quoted as saying that his child went into school having spent an hour making her pinhole camera through which she could safely watch the Moon pass in front of the Sun. However, she was then reportedly told that she could not participate. Belman said he met the acting headteacher to discuss the issue and claims that he was told children could not watch the eclipse “for religious and cultural reasons”. Belman said: “This is an issue about scientific matters versus religious superstition. I am outraged – is it going to be Darwin next? We will be like mid America.” Ealing Council confirmed that pupils were not allowed outside of their classrooms to watch the eclipse, but said that they were able to watch the event on television screens inside. The alleged incident comes as pupils at Paignton school in Devon were also told not to watch the eclipse outdoors out of fears that some of the 700 children may look directly at the Sun and damage their eyes, according to the BBC. Previously, US pastors had warned that the eclipse was a sign of the ‘end times’ and a message from God to the whole world. The Independent quoted Texan pastor Bob O’Dell as saying: “When we look at where the darkness will be, it will be in northern European countries like England and Sweden where we see the rise of Islam and anti-Israel sentiment. Europeans especially should take heed.” |
A young woman was so desperate to find the father of her unborn son that she posted an ad on Gumtree with unexpected vitriolic responses from total strangers. Bianca Fazey, 24, had a one night stand with a man in Perth, Western Australia on April 23 this year and surprisingly discovered she was pregnant after being told in 2011 that she was unlikely to ever become a mum when she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. For five months, Bianca frantically searched for the father but had no luck as she only knew his first name and what suburb he lived in. 'I was at my wits end,' she told Daily Mail Australia. 'I tried finding him for months and felt pressured by a friend who was adamant I don't give up despite exhausting all avenues.' This was when Bianca, who was so stressed that she was losing sleep, decided to post an ad on Gumtree which created a barrage of hateful responses prompting her to take to take it down. 'I stupidly put it up thinking no one would even see it but who knows what will happen, maybe I will get lucky,' she said. 'Unfortunately all I got was lots of judgement and idiots messaging me telling me they would be the father or pretending to be Jeremy.' The most offensive messages were from people saying that Bianca, who is due in mid January, should have opted for a termination. 'When it was shared on the LAD bible page a lot of people made single-minded comments aimed at me, no one mentioned the guy was equally a part of me getting pregnant,' she said. 'Sometimes I want to be like one of those people on Maury Povich screaming back at the audience because they have no clue what they're booing about!' Bianca wasn't exactly shocked to be called names like a 'sl**' but it got out of control when one person lashed out saying 'kill it'. 'It was sad to see people saying I should get an abortion, those were the only comments that hurt.' 'Society is still hating on women who choose to keep pregnancy outside of a relationship,' she said. 'I was more mad at the amount of women (mums included) saying I shouldn't go through with it.' But Bianca has risen above the horrendous backlash and can't wait to meet her little man when he enters the world in two months. 'All I can say is I chose to go ahead with the pregnancy because I didn't think I could have children,' she said. 'Even though I knew this guy had disappeared I didn't want to give up my chance and I'm so grateful I didn't.' |
If these towns were annexed by Chad or Niger would they be missed? |
Why is that religious folk seem to focus so much of their attention on things that we can prove were made by mankind - special books, so called holy (constructed) places, stories, philosophies and laws. Do any of them protect things that they claim were created by their god? The natural environment; animals; the welfare of their fellow man including those who do not buy into the same dogmas as they do; their own children (in many cases); the mentality ill. Why do the majority of religious people not make a point of protecting that which they claim was created by their god, particularly those elements that cannot defend themselves? |
Skoopy:I'm convinced that there are people who just look for a reason to hate Calabar because of its reputation as a beautiful place to be. How anyone can say that Imoke is worse than his counterparts in Delta or Rivers states is beyond me. I'm looking forward to the Summit Hills development - the conference center plus a new golf course in Calabar and a specialist hospital. Specialist/International standard hospitals should appreciated from a health care and economic standpoint and yet only two states have seen the wisdom to build or plan for such facilities - Cross River and (of course) Akwa Ibom. |
A man of taste - a beautiful home in a serene setting. I laugh at people who post pics of their new Bentleys inside a dirty, cramped compound. We have so much natural beauty in Nigeria but many people do not understand or appreciate this fact. Health is wealth, mental as well as physical. Priorities. |
simplemach:Nigeria used to drive on the left until 1972. This pic was taken when Nigeria had visionary and responsible leaders such as Awolowo - if you don't know what that man did for this country go and find out. What we see in Lagos today is the inevitable result of unbridled population growth. I've seen pics of Lagos from the mid 1970s when it was still a beautiful place with a manageable population. |
This is a curse not a prayer. |
Jostico:It isn't just oyibo who see this as abuse, anyone with a pair of eyes can see this is abuse. |
judiciarypalava:Nigeria was designed by the Brits to have northern leaders who would always hold the country back and allow the Europeans to purchase raw, lower value materials from Nigeria. This mentality has been pervasive throughout the Nigerian civil service and state owned industries, hence why Nigeria is importing fuel in 2015, why Nigeria is not producing sufficient energy in 2015 and why some Nigerians are still using kerosene in 2015. My hope is that the northern masses see that it is not the southerners keeping them deprived but their own wicked leaders. |
Ifeann:When god slaughtered all those people in the flood of the old testament did that eradicate the problem? Was that a 'good idea'? Instead of waiting for something to become spoiled why does your all knowing god not plan better? |
The same people who claim that these children were murdered by god because they would have grown up to become evil are the first ones to get angry when someone brings up abortion. |
Good post but the truth is until you can convince people to be more responsible with their bodies and not to have children with people they do not know/respect/trust we will continue to have a problem with parents arguing, sometimes violently, in front of their children. |
Bluetooth2:When you have assets you can borrow to build projects which will lead to a period of indebtedness. Does Lagos not have debts? Donald Duke borrowed heavily to build many of the projects in Cross River. Find me a progressive nation or province on this planet that does not have debts. Money is borrowed into existence - so long as the money is being used for projects that can be utilized it is not the disaster that many of you cry about. |
obailala:Is it not better to complete a few projects properly to a high standard than to have several projects that will need to be redone in a few years because of their low standard? Quality > Quantity. At the moment it is unlikely that business people will be looking to relocate to Uyo en masse but there is a masterplan that the AKS government is working to that will make it an attractive destination in years to come. From what it was before they've done a lot of great things - you have to remember this state isn't even 30 year's old, it was a region neglected for a long time by the Old Eastern Region and Cross River governments and of course the military clowns who destroyed this country for everyone. The roads and the underground drainage system built to a world class standard are just the beginning. All good things take time. P.S. Why do so many people talk as if Uyo is the only city with Keke Napep? If you've been there recently you'll know that they have been banned from many areas of the city. |
Precisely what I was saying before I heard that he had no intention of prosecuting past transgressors vis-a-vis corruption. In fairness how can he? He would be left without a single significant ally. Such is politics, sadly. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/buhari-i-wont-probe-past-govts/ |
musaffyan:Nsibidi is a native Nigerian writing script. Your being ignorant of a fact does not make it false. |
inosend:If what you say is true then someone should explain to them that they are not Arabs and should be grateful of that fact. |
No excuse for rape, ever. But we shouldn't assume that every accusation is truthful and should therefore reserve judgement. |
JingoOAU:Because religion is the antithesis of progress. Religion equates to willful ignorance. That these people have made so much money is no surprise, there are a lot of misguided and desperate people on this planet. |
falseman:They get caught all the time. The problem is that many Nigerians prefer to absorb negativity about themselves so as to justify their own self-hatred. |
