Probably you don't know what meritocracy is but it's common sense to give to who is deserving...you don't know the history of Benin and why Edos owe so much to the Oba
Many people would prefer power abuse from a well deserving figure in the face of competence and development (eg. Mao of China, Oba Ewuare, Alaafin Sango) over democracy with corruption, poverty, epileptic power supply, awful infrastructure etc. eg. Nigeria since 1960 Where did I say there was a problem with meritocracy? Look up the definition of 'antithesis'. |

"Culture is an excuse not to think" you've just spewed garbage mahn! Our Culture has undergone extensive modernization to suit the changes in time, hence the "culture is an excuse not to think" trash you just said could only be applicable to your own "people" who got no heritage whatsoever! If culture has stopped your own people from thinking, it hasn't stopped the Bini people from thinking. The Bini people are wise enough to hold their Oba in High Esteem as the Preserver and Custodian of the Great Benin Culture and Tradition. Same way some nuisanc.e would come here to say "what the heck is traditional marriage" their Foo.lishness precedes them! #NuffSaid. Now run along and scroll past this response. spectator2001: Ok, Fine. Do u know the Sultan of Sokoto? He is a Muslim ruler and by virtue of his Ancestral Heritage- the Head of all Muslims in Nigeria. The position of a monarch in the pre-colonial era wielded higher influence and authority which has diminished over time in the post-Colonial era.
The absolute power over life and death once at the dispose of these monarchs ain't existing anymore but the TRADITIONS of the PEOPLE Must be held in TRUST by a CUSTODIAN, the CUSTODIANS of these traditions are the Traditional Rulers, the functions they perform can NEVER be performed by any GOVERNMENT DEMOCRATICALLY Elected official, be it the President, the Governor or Local Government Chairmen of their Jurisdictions.
Even OBJ for all his presidential powers remained a core traditional title holder in his Owu Egba domain as a BALOGUN. Maitama Sule, one of the few living men of the pre-Colonial Nigeria is still a high ranking traditional title holder in the City of Kano till date.
We may forgo some things in Life, not the very basis of our own cultural heritage, our customs and Tradition bequeathed us by our forebears! The relinquishing of our customs and tradition owing to "Change" in times doesn't only smirk of irresponsibility but also an indication of total willingness to lose our core values to foster an existence of people without roots and Culture.
Have u ever asked yourself why the Brits are yet to do away with their monarchy? It is simply because, it is their common source of pride wherever they go. In United Kingdom, people complain so much about Prince Charles as being a leech, who does nothing only to be feeding on tax payers money. Same goes for Andrew who receives regular press bashings for his incessant charter of private jets with Tax payers money and the rest of the Royals over there receives same insults on a daily basis by the "anti-monarchy elements but ask them in United Kingdom. "ARE THEY READY TO ABOLISH THE MONARCHY " The answer U'd get is a resounding NO!
Let's hold dear that which we still have left of our cultural heritage, The Oba, King Erediauwa is a core figure in the History of Nigeria as a Custodian of the great Benin Empire which once held sway in this present day Nigeria and extends far as to some West African Nations in its prime. Monarchy exists for the benefit of the monarchy not the people. Monarch and religion combine to break the people and hold them in a position of subservience and fear. What has the Sultan of Sokoto done to aid the development of his people? Why is it that his children attend the best schools (including his daughters) whilst the majority of children in his region (especially the girls) don't get that opportunity? Just because something is 'cultural' does not mean that a people should hang onto it for dear life - it may once have been the culture to physically dominate your wife, that does not make it wise to do so; it was not the culture to send girls to school in most parts of the world; it may have been the culture for girls to be married before they were 20 years old but such a practice would be foolish in the 21st century. The reason why Nigeria has a problem with fistula in some parts of the country is because of 'culture'. The reason why Nigeria has a problem with illiteracy in some parts of the country is because of 'culture'. Boko Haram have manipulated this attachment to 'culture' for their own nefarious benefits. Culture, like religion, is often an excuse not to think - remembering your roots is important but continuing a practice simply because (you think that) it has been in place for a long time is foolish. |

You are the one trying to define the world based on Major European ideas but lemme make you know that Monarchy is still well observed in some European countries. The greatest of human civilizations have been monarchical If absolute power is ur problem.. Not every nation observed absolute monarchy
Monarchy is the best form of government You keep bringing up Europeans? Do you have a complex. Why are they your preferred point of reference? Democracy is not unique to any one group of people - what do you have against the community being involved in a system of government? Do you also have issues with personal responsibility? |

You're talking about this guy:
Two Nigerian nationals received breaks on their sentences for bank fraud Wednesday when a federal judge rewarded them for their assistance in a much larger investigation.
Senior U.S. District Judge Charles Butler sentenced Adrian Chike Okakpu, 25, to two years in prison and gave Okwudili Umenyiora, 26, 18 months. Both get credit for the months they've been jailed since their arrests last summer.
The men, both from the Atlanta area, must make restitution totaling $131,867 and face likely deportation after completing their sentences. According to U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigators, the men stole commercial checks from various companies and altered the payee line. They then recruited people, including two from Mobile, to cash the checks and give the money to them in cashier's checks. The total they tried to steal exceeded $400,000, according to court documents.
Over the past two weeks I've seen a number of posts celebrating the children of politicians and how they throw federal and state resources around, Abacha's wife and daughter and now another criminal.
It's becoming apparent that many of you are extremely damaged individuals. |

Politics › Re: Court Nullifies Movement Restriction During Lagos Monthly Sanitation by mmsen: 3:03pm On Mar 16, 2015 |
franciskaine: Sir, have you actually considered the pros and cons of this restriction and why it was introduced in the first place? Let's look at it through this way. Building "A" has 5 occupants who have differing work schedule and differing time freedom allocated to them based on their variations in work and job specifics. If Mr Chika decides to clean his house on Monday at the expense of others, the environment still remains dirty. The relevance of creating a compulsory work free time for sanitation is to ensure that everyone does it simultaneously irrespective of one's working and job schedule. Mind you, this explanation is based on peculiarities relating to pervasive corruption in Nigerian Institution charged with implementing such compliances. For now, the cost of cleaning our environment and maintaining proper Institutions will have greater financial implications on the govt. Is sanitation about keeping the inside of homes clean? I'm sure it is about keeping the general environment clean. It is for the owner of the premises to ensure that his/her building is clean. If there are multiple occupants and one landlord then the landlord should stipulate within the terms of the tenancy what the arrangement is pertaining to the upkeep of the premises - most decent landlords know to do this. 'Corruption' is no excuse for not painting or cleaning your compound, ensuring that the drains are not blocked with refuse. If citizens wish to be treated with respect then they ought to respect themselves enough to take pride in their own environs. |

franciskaine: are you actually describing Nigerians or Americans? The fact remains that we lack these effective Institutional mechanism to effectively punish defiants, more so, our population still lacks the educational know-how on the relevance of clean environment. Read what I wrote again - I mentioned the need to educate first. Nigeria has a bloated civil service - why not make them earn their keep? LASTMA seem to have no issues collecting fines - your claim about no mechanisms to effectively punish 'deviants' is false. |

I remember during Obasanjo years, there was a shoot at sight order for the leaders of those groups they had to go into hiding.
Can't wait for March 28 to come any sooner. This is not a problem particular to any one Nigerian government or President, this is the result of the failure of everyone in power who has not pushed through policies that promote family planning and parental responsibility. Religious groups have not done anything to promote such better, more sustainable breeding habits - I wonder why... Wherever you have people who will cry about poverty on the one hand whilst having an unsustainable number of children you will always have insecurity. This is not a problem particular to any one government, or even Nigeria. If we do not change some of our cultural habits this will remain a problem. Think quality and not quantity. |
Politics › Re: Court Nullifies Movement Restriction During Lagos Monthly Sanitation by mmsen: 2:06pm On Mar 16, 2015*. Modified: 2:22pm On Mar 16, 2015 |
Instead of forcing people to engage in a day of sanitation it would be better educate people on the need for cleanliness followed by fines for those who are caught or known to litter and block drainage; stop the construction of buildings for which there is no permit or plans for adequate drainage; fine those who do not paint or clean the facade of their premises within a set period of time.
It isn't for a government to tell people when they should and should not move around - curfews are a military tactic, peaceful civilians should not be subjected to such actions. |
