Gambia is a small country and this practice of having Nigerian judges as their Chief Justice has been on for as long as I can remember, their judiciary is not as robust and solid like ours, so from time to time we give helping hands to other African countries and not just the Gambia alone. It may interest u to know that this practice also includes their military as well and it was our own Col. CFCman: This proposal should definitely come with strong checks and balances to prevent Governors from abusing the law. I'm afraid the governors could essentially turn the state police commands into their own private armies; gubernatorial opponents could be arrested on the flimsy orders of an incumbent governor.
I'd limit the powers of the governor to issue orders to the police to convening a security meeting with the Commissioner of Police, DCPs and ACPs, and reshuffling police officers to areas where policing is adequate.
Furthermore, I also believe the appointment of the Inspector General of Police (and Deputy Inspectors General of Police) should be subject to the advice and consent (confirmation) of the Senate. This would ensure that the IGP and the DIG's aren't simply lapdogs of Aso Rock.
Also, the Commissioners of Police (or a DCP, if the CP isn't available) should be required to brief members of the state houses of assembly on a quarterly basis, on the general security condition of the respective states. Very nice opinion and u couldn't ve even said it better.... |

sirpatrick: 1 The country with the largest number of WWII causalities was Russia, with over 21 million.
2 For every five German soldiers who died in WWII, four of them died on the Eastern Front.
3 It is estimated that 1.5 million children died during the Holocaust. Approximately 1.2 million of them were Jewish and tens of thousands were Gypsies.
4 Eighty percent of Soviet males born in 1923 didn’t survive WWII.
5 Between 1939 and 1945, the Allies dropped 3.4 million tons of bombs, which averaged to 27,700 tons per month.
6 Russia and the Red Army were accused of several war crimes, including systematic mass rape (over 2 million German women aged 13-70 were allegedly raped by the Red Army) and genocide.
7 Even after the Allies arrived, many concentration camp prisoners were beyond help. In Bergen-Belsen, for example, 13,000 prisoners died after liberation. Nearly 2,500 of the 33,000 survivors of Dachau died within six weeks of liberation.
8 Most historians agree that WWII began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Others say it started when Japan invaded Manchuria on September 18, 1931. And some scholars suggest WWII is actually a continuation of WWI, with a break in between. WW II began on September 1, 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland
9 Max Heiliger was the fictitious name the SS used to establish a bank account in which they deposited money, gold, and jewels taken from European Jews.
10 The longest battle of WWII was the Battle of the Atlantic, which lasted from 1939-1945.
11 The original abbreviation of the National Socialist Party was Nasos. The word “Nazi” derives from a Bavarian word that means “simple minded” and was first used as a term of derision by journalist Konrad Heiden (1901-1966).
12 Approximately 600,000 Jews served in the United States armed forces during WWII. More than 35,000 were killed, wounded, captured, or missing. Approximately 8,000 died in combat. However, only two Jewish soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor in WWII.
13 The Battle of the Bulge is the largest and deadliest battle for U.S. troops to date, with more than 80,000 American casualties.
14 More Russians (military and civilians) lost their lives during the Siege of Leningrad than did American and British soldiers combined in all of WWII.
15 The Nazis murdered approximately 12 million people, nearly 6 million of those being Jews killed in the Holocaust (“whole burnt”).
16 During WWII, the Japanese launched 9,000 “wind ship weapons” of paper and rubberized-silk balloons that carried incendiary and anti-personnel bombs to the U.S. More than 1,000 balloons hit their targets and they reached as far east as Michigan. The only deaths resulting from a balloon bomb were six Americans (including five children and a pregnant woman) on a picnic in Oregon.
17 The swastika is an ancient religious symbol. It derives from the Sanskrit name for a hooked cross, which was used by ancient civilizations as a symbol of fertility and good fortune. It has been found in the ruins of Greece, Egypt, China, India, and Hindu temples. The swastika is a sacred religious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism and dates back to before the 2nd century BC
18 The Japanese Kamikaze (“divine wind”) tactic was suggested on October 19, 1944, by Vice-Admiral Onishi in an attempt to balance the technological advantage of invading American forces. Though the numbers are disputed, approximately 2,800 kamikaze pilots died. They sunk 34 U.S. ships, damaged 368, killed 4,900 sailors, and wounded 4,800.
19 In 1935, British engineer Robert Watson-Watt was working on a “death ray” that would destroy enemy aircraft using radio waves. His “death ray” instead evolved into radar—or “radio detection and ranging.
20 Many Jews were subject to gruesome medical experiments. For example, doctors would bombard the testicles of men and the ovaries of women with X-rays to see the impact of different doses on sterility. Nazi doctors would break bones repeatedly to see how many times it could be done before a bone could not heal. They hit people’s heads with hammers to see what their skulls could withstand. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of atmospheric pressure on the body. Prisoners were injected with different drugs and diseases, and limbs were amputated and muscles cut for transplantation experiments. Today reference to or use of the Nazi research is considered unethical.
21 Dr. Josef Mengele (the “Angel of Death”) used about 3,000 twins, mostly Romany and Jewish children, for his painful genetic experiments. Only about 200 survived. His experiments included taking one twin’s eyeball and attaching it on the back of the other twin’s head or changing the eye color of children by injecting dye. In one instance, two Romany twins were sewn together in an attempt to create conjoined twins.
22 In addition to Jews and gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses were also persecuted and murdered in German concentration camps.
23 The decision to implement the “Final Solution” or Die Endlosung was made at the Wannsee Conference in Berlin on January 20, 1942. Heinrich Himmler was its chief architect. The earliest use of the phrase “Final Solution to the Jewish Problem” was actually used in an 1899 memo to Russian Tzar Nicholas about Zionism.
24 Many historians believe that the Battle at Stalingrad (1942-1943) is not only arguably the bloodiest battle in history (800,000-1,600,000 casualties), but also the turning point of WWII in Europe. Nearly 40,000 Soviet civilians lost their lives during the Battle of Stalingrad
25 WWII ended on September 2, 1945, when Japan signed a surrender agreement on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
26 Anne Frank and her sister died at Bergen-Belsen in March 1945, one month before the camp was liberated in April 1945. During its existence, nearly 50,000 people died. After evacuating the camp, British soldiers burned it to the ground to prevent the spread of typhus.
27 In his book The Abandonment of the Jews, David Wyman (1929- ) argued that the failure to bomb concentration camps was a result of the Allies’ indifference to the fate of the Jews rather than the practical impossibility of the operation.
28 Despite the risks, thousands of people helped save the Jews. For example, the country of Denmark saved its entire community. And individuals such as Raoul Wallenberg (1912-1947), Oscar Schindler (1908-1974), and Chiune Sugihara (1900-1986) saved thousands of lives.
29 From 1940-1945, the U.S. defense budget increased form $1.9 billion to $59.8 billion.
30 The Air Force was part of the Army in WWII and didn’t become a separate branch of the military until after the war.
31 In 1941, a private earned $21 a month. In 1942, a private earned $50 a month.
32 German U-boats sunk 2,000 Allied ships at a cost of 781 U-boats destroyed.[2] 33 More than 650,000 Jeeps were built during WWII. American factories also produced 300,000 military aircraft; 89,000 tanks; 3 million machine guns; and 7 million rifles.

ourema: Very insightful reasoning but let me ask you a question. Could it be that African leaders and Africa in general are yet to define the form of leadership that best suits the people.? Could it be that democracy is a wrong system of governance for Africa? I think the answer to ur question is a big YES. Bt then there is nowhere in the world freedom is easily given esp by the oppressor, the oppressed has to fight to get it.The whites also know that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely and so over time they ve been able to come up with ideas and means of checking government excesses. I think the Americans ve wat they call the 2nd Amendment which grants them the right to bear and keep arms and must not be infringed upon. In some countries, once a citizen gets to the age of 18,he is made to undergo some compulsory military trainings and drills, he is even taught how to handle military rifles and the rest,so that wen they re in a state of war, he could be called upon as a reservist. Now with these two examples that I ve given,if it is time for u to quit office as a president, would u still want u to seat tight? Wen u know that majority of the population can handle big military stuffs, u won't want to risk it and engage in any shenanigan of seating tight. A civilised man in a civilised settings would do anything to protect his family and freedom. Most African countries don't ve these kinds of schemes, even the N. Y. S. C sef na sham, they won't teach u the proper military drills because the leaders know they re evil. They know that a gun in the hands of a man is raw power.. Methinks every country needs to check wat system is best for her,i know the indirect and age grade systems worked well in the north and east respectively.Likewise the iron fist rule for Arabs. So democracy is alien to us and we don't seem to want to adapt to it in a hurry.. |

@panafrican, a lot of people either don't know wat actually led to Gbagbo's fall or re just too numb to want to admit.
The whites re always quick to pull down any African leader who refuses to be used. If u take a look at how Thomas Sankara was killed by his treacherous friend in the person of Blaise Composite, u will see the hands of France all over the plot. They were not comfortable with his policy of emancipating his country.
The funny thing is that Sankara was the only military president in the whole of Africa then that the Abami Eda (FELA) liked despite his hatred for military governments prolly because of his approach to governance and his pro-masses policies.
As long as u re on the seat and u do the bidding of the colonial masters then there will be no problem bt the moment u try to deviate,u become marked. The French re even more guilty in this regard.
Ask yourself why the Eyadema's dynasty still exists till date without a whimper of protest from France.
Also take ur mind back to wat played out in Zimbabwe some years back with regards to white farmers and the large hectares of land they owned. because of this they re waiting to drag Mugabe before the I. C. C and he has already told them that he would rather die on the seat than see his ass taken before any court @ the Hague...
I am still watching to see how this Gambia's imbroglio pans out because this man(Yaya Jameh) is no longer a signatory to the I. C. C Act,a court which they feel only African leaders deserve to be taken....As far as I am concerned, Bush and Blair more than deserve to be hauled before the court too,no animal farm treatment should be welcomed... |

Chukazu: as much as I do not see any sense in what he has done, I Really blame the USA for been threatening the guy with with been tried at the Hague(I.C.C) for human rights abuses, i mean they should have allowed him to step down first before such threat
by the way, it seems ICC is only meant for African leaders alone A million likes for u, I am not trying to hold brief for any power -drunk or hungry African leader despite Africa having more of useless, and power-drunk presidents and ex-presidents in abundance, how about ex-presidents of the developed world who also violated people's rights and freedom in the past, I mean those in the moulds of George Bush Jnr and Tony Blair. These pair need to be hauled before the Hague too.Human rights abuses don't discriminate and are the same world over. So it doesn't make any sense when u continue to scapegoat and haul only past and present African leaders before the World Court. What is sauce for the goose should be same for the gander too. For those that re quick to point out Gbagbo's treatment, he tried to upturn a system that wasn't favourable to Ivorians, with the French being the beneficiaries all the time, and for this he was marked for destruction. How many people on this forum know that the Central Bank of Ivory Coast has to take permission from France on how to borrow and use her own currency and it comes with an interest borne by Ivory Coast. Also their cocoa produce has to be vetted by France to be sold @ a price the colonialists want even if it is to the host's detriment. Contracts to be awarded also ve to be vetted at a particular price for French companies by France, it was all these that Gbagbo stood against. As far as I can remember, the only white leader I know that was hauled before the court was late Milosevic Slobadan of Serbia, who died in detention. It will interest us to know also that the U. S re not a signatory to the act setting up the court, wat this means is that in the case of any peace keeping missions where American soldiers re known to misbehave, u can't haul them before the court. The U. S even made a statement to this effect that : if our soldiers should be found wanting in any peace mission, don't hesitate to hand him over to us and we will deal with him our own way. And they want to take our past leaders there?? OK nau, I am glad that Mugabe has told them to get ready and haul his dead ass there because he is not gonna leave anytime soon. Which is even more devastating, the abuse of citizens rights or the ruination of Libya, Iraq and the rest? The irony of this whole thing is the fact that it was Nigeria's Lawan Gwadabe. as Chief of staff, Gambian Army along with other Nigerian soldiers who introduced Yayyah Jameh to coup plotting... If you are indeed a believer in God nothing can bring harm or benefit you except as He will. The claim that people are still deep in traditional beliefs is still very true . consider the example of two friends whom both graduated with first class and yet graduate A was more successful than graduate B . the later didnt offend God , its just life. I see this scenario playing out soon esp wen u re in a system that is so bedevilled with corruption that it has become a part and way of life of a people. As far as I am concerned,he is just a lone voice in the wilderness,to some people he should just complete his tenure and get his ass off that seat, citizens re tired already and they don't care if corruption is being fought tooth and nail. And since he has concentrated on just fighting corruption and getting rid of it as the cardinal point of his administration, does it then mean every other thing should be on hold or the citizenry should die of starvation, maybe it's only wen these start happening on a larger scale that he would then come to the realization that actually more damage than salvation is being done..... |
