EFCC unfreezes bank accounts of key Tinubu ally

AHigh Court in Lagos froze the bank accounts of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, following an application made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At the time, the agency said the accounts were being investigated ‘for the offences of conspiracy, diversion of funds, abuse of office, and money laundering’.

Court documents seen by The Africa Report show that Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted an order to unfreeze the accounts on 16 August, after an application by Obasa’s lawyers.

The three accounts – current, savings (both in naira) and US dollar – are domiciled at Standard Chartered Bank.

The EFCC’s lawyer did not oppose the application to unfreeze the accounts.

Tribunal Returns Gabriel Suswam To Senate

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State has declared Senator Gabriel Suswam of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner…

The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State has declared Senator Gabriel Suswam of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the February 25 election for Benue Northeast senatorial district.

Our correspondent reports that the tribunal judgement which held for over three hours sacked the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) Emmanuel Udende from the upper chambers of the National Assembly.

Suswam, a member of the 9th senate, had lost his bid to return to the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

But he had headed for the court, arguing that Udende did not score majority of the lawful votes cast in the 25th February, 2023, Benue North East Senatorial District election.

Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Ory Zik-Ikeorha and another member, ruled in the favour of Suswam and PDP.

The duo, in their judgment, averred that Suswam and PDP fulfilled the requirement of the law in proving their case of irregularities such as mutilation, non-signing of documents, non-inclusion of lawful votes, among others.

But, in a minority judgement, Justice Umar Mohammed, opposed the decision of the two other members of the panel, saying that the petitioner failed to proved his case.

Mohammed held that Suswam who called 19 witnesses most of who were irrelevant as the irregularities complained of were at the polling units and instead called ward agents instead of polling unit agents.

Suswam and PDP’s petition was predicated on the ground that Udende did not score majority of the lawful votes cast during the election.

Justice Mohammed held that the evidence by Suswam was grossly insufficient to sustain his petition.

He therefore, dismissed the petition and awarded the cost of N100,000 in favour of each of the respondents against the petitioner.

Meanwhile, Innocent Daagba, on behalf of the APC, said, “we are not satisfied with the decision and will advice my client to appeal.”

The PDP, through Bemgba Iortyom, the State Publicity Secretary, hailed the judgment and congratulated Senator.

Also, the immediate past Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom, has congratulated Senator Suswam over his victory at the tribunal.

Ortom said the victory of Senator Suswam has further proven the capacity of the judiciary to uphold justice and serve as the bastion of democracy.

The former governor through his media aide, Terver Akase, commended Suswam for following the legal process to get justice and congratulated the PDP family in Benue over the tribunal judgment.

Nigerian Woman Who Sued Inspector-General Of Police, Other Officers, Raises Alarm Over Threat To Life

SaharaReporters reported on August 19, 2023 that Robert sued the Acting Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Police Service Commission, three police officers, and one Ifenyinwa Anthonia Olua (Ugo) to the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo.

Peace Ekom Robert, a Nigerian woman who was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force has raised the alarm over the safety of her life.

Ekom is seeking N520 million in damages for the alleged violation of her fundamental and constitutional rights.

In an update and Save-Our-Soul (SOS) posted on her Facebook page, Ekom alleged that the Commissioner of Police, Admin Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Abuja, CP Ibrahim Baba Zango, has been making attempt on her life, sending police personnel to kidnap and kill her despite the pendency of court action against him and police authorities.

Ekom categorically stated that she was at no time revolted against the officers of the NPF over the proper conduct of investigation on this offshore transaction that was initiated by Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua and her partners.

"I have not received any funds from the beneficiary ( Black London S. L) and the account owner has shown the willingness to cooperate with the law enforcement bodies in Nigeria to resolving this matter, even though CP Baba Zango bluntly refused to speak to or hear from the beneficiary nor make findings from the reciever's end through the appropriate channels.

"My accounts and that of my son linked to my salary account in UBA were frozen by an initial court order obtained by #NPF to enable them conduct their investigations and this is way over 60days, which to my knowledge has not been renewed, yet my accounts remain embargoed."

Ekom wrote: "Dear Nigerians, Attn: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu The Senate President - Nigeria Pastor Umo Eno Akwa Ibom State Government Nigeria Police Force Economic and Financial Crimes Commission DSS official; Fida Nigeria Fida Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Branch INTERPOL HQ AIT Online Sahara Reporters Arise News Complaint Response Unit - CRU, Nigeria Police Force Punch Newspapers Ajuri Ngelale

"This is to bring to your notice that the following people listed below should be held responsible for any harm or loss that may befall me or any of my family members in connection to the 'WANTED' publications made by the Nigerian Police Force on the 22nd of July, 2023 and 15th of August, 2023 respectively against me.

“Also, if I am kidnapped again through the use of the Nigerian Police Force machinery under any guise or form and eliminated in the process, kindly hold the following persons responsible:

"1. CP IBRAHIM BABA ZANGO: He is presently The Commissioner of Police, Admin FCID Abuja. He sent some people to kidnap me in Uyo-Akwa Ibom State on the 13th of March and these men were instructed to collect my phones, ensure I had no contacts with anyone, and whisk me off to Lagos, where he was the CP Anti Homicide Section, FCID- Alagbon, Lagos. It was through sheer luck a policeman picked my SOS and called Mr. Nana Udom, who immediately alerted The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State to rescue me from that kidnap attempt.

"It is worthy of note that, there was no policeman in that company of kidnappers, no warrant of arrest, no activity documentation, neither was there any formal or informal invitation to respond to any petition for 'CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, THREAT TO LIFE, FORGERY, FRAUDULENT CONVERSION, AND CONDUCT LIKELY TO CAUSE BREACH OF PEACE' made by Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua.

"I decided to go to Lagos on the 14th of March, 2023 to make my response and without hearing from me, he asked me to be locked up because, he had judged me and concluded on the case as told by his friend, the complainant. All efforts to speak to him by the CP, Akwa Ibom State Command, The AIG in charge of Zone 6, Calabar fell on deaf ears.

"CP Ibrahim Baba Zango extorted Fifteen Million Naira (15,000,000 NGN) from me which was paid after he stormed my hotel premises in Lagos from 12 midnight on the 29th of March,2023 with mobile police men on bikes and other armed officers in trucks and cars, (as if they were looking for a terrorist) to re-arrest me after I was duly released from their custody on the 28th of March," she said.

She added, "The intimidation, torture, threat to my life and a threat to get me another remand order for 30days, if I didn't make payment of Twenty Million Naira (20,000,000 NGN) instantly was overwhelming.
Hence, the transfer of 15,000,000NGN to the account I was given, so I could gain my freedom.

"On the approval of the immediate past IGP, Usman Alkali, to transfer the case to National Cyber Crime Unit- Abuja, he seized my case file and refused to honor several signals given to him from senior officers of the force, such as AIG Frank Mba and the former DIG Interpol to release the case file to enable the NCC team to commence their investigation on the matter.

"He frustrated all their attempts and insisted he must be the case officer and declared that no one could take a case from him except under the instructions of The Immediate Past President, Muhammadu Buhari.

"So he prides himself as being bigger than the NPF and sadly, many officers fear him and hate to interfere with his cases."

Giving further explanation, she added: "On that note, I made petitions against him and his colleagues, DSP Yusuf Dauda and Insp Celestina Ugbaja who worked with him on this case to CRU- Abuja and Police Service Commission respectively.

"These ones demanded two hundred thousand Naira (200,000NGN) from me to enable them write a letter to Interpol that is right beside their office in Alagbon, because I requested for Interpol Assistance on the investigation since it was obvious that all they cared about was forcing me to make payments for a commercial transaction that was under dispute, and not to find out the truth as regards the allegations that were leveled against me by Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua.

"So, I made a transfer of one hundred and fifty thousand Naira(150,000NGN) through my friend, to an account they provided for me, to enable them do their job.

"I have co-operated with these officers since 14th of March, 2023 till 2nd of June, 2023 and all I see is compromise and the desperate need to intimidate me to accept a crime I did not commit.

"I had told CP Ibrahim Baba Zango and his team to charge me court since he was convinced that I had committed the crimes brought before him, but the threatened to keep me in detention and whoever asks him, he would say its the court that's holding me in remand.

"Their anger is that I have petitioned them and have charged them to court on the 12th of July, 2023 to enforce my fundamental human rights breached against me during the period in reference, and all the parties involved have been properly served and the evidences of service/ hearing notices served have been documented in court.

"2. Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua (@iphie_jess) CEO: SIMJEZ GLOBAL RESOURCES, SIMJEZ INT'L CONCEPT LTD, JESSY JEZ UNIQUE CONCEPT. And Ex staff of #fidelitybank. (You can check her out on google). And her husband, Nnamdi Ugoh C-bone (@nnamdiugoh).

"Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua seems to forget that she told me in December, 2022 that a guarnishee order was placed on her #GTB accounts( Simjez) after she collected the sum of about Two hundred million Naira (200,000,000 NGN) from a customer to provide USD for him in China for payment of goods and wherever she got money from to initiate the transfer, according to her, it got to the account in China and immediately, the money reversed back to source.

"Now, the customer didn't receive the USD he paid for, neither could he retrieve his Naira from her, because she had spent it before the transaction was concluded.

"This is the exact same thing that she did to me in August 2022 after she gave me proof of funds through her counterpart, Mark-Daniels Eniola Churchill and she insisted that Naira payment had to be made to her first. It was by the Grace of God that I was able to recover my customer’s money from her after 6weeks of fake payment slips, sleepless nights and many lies.

"We discovered that she paid over a 110M Naira to an apartment facility in Lagos, 40M naira to one Mark English and 26M naira for the White Lexus car she cleared during the period, while my customers were busy waiting for their swap to renew their Microsoft licences in UK and payment for purchases in China.

"We had to confront her with the discoveries and she pleaded to make refunds of the Naira. Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua did the same thing she did to me to other customers to raise my principal's Naira which came in bits and pieces.

"Till today, an outstanding balance of 23.9M Naira is left which she begged my customer to let her trade off and that woman was magnanimous enough not to charge her for fraud."

What gives someone the guts to touch someone's money when the FX is not their own and most importantly, when the transaction is not complete, she queried.

"It's on the strength of the outstanding balance of 23.9M Naira, which she promised to trade off, that I kept the relationship open, hoping that she would make good her commitment to my principal.

"On January 31st and February 1st, 2023, she made a transfer of 55,000Euros in tranches of 25,000Euros and 30,000Euros from one Miriam Gutierrez Toledo to a company( BLACK LONDON S.L) that requested for a swap to enable them import tiles."

"The beneficiary requested for the source of funds, CIS of payer and other documentations authorizing her to deal on behalf of Miriam Gutierrez Toledo.

I asked to know her relationship with the payer as due diligence necessary for the swap, the Spanish lady's relationship with Nigeria and why she needs Naira.

"Ifeyinwa Anthonia Olua declined my requests for KYC documentation and started sending threats to me. She linked me to a video call on the 2nd of February, 2023 where some men in Nigeria were smoking, drinking and shooting guns, threatening my life for the Naira, telling her 'you know wetin I dey do take get my money, you come ask me make I give you money and as i don pay you, you dey talk say make i call am back, you know say my money no dey loss. If I no get my money in 48 hours, you see this as i dey waste my **** i go finish am for your leg and you too Madam Peace', because, I demanded that she either asks the payer to send a mail to her bank to confirm that she authorized the payments, provided the required documents or she places a recall on the funds.

"Till today as we speak, Ifeyinwa has not done any of these, and according to the beneficiary, he does not have access to money either because it was lined by the banking authorities due to a suspicious action request (SAR) that was triggered over the transaction and I have provided two statements dated 7th February 2023 and 17th March, 2023 to this effect.

"She preferred to go make a petition against me at Anti Homicide Section, Alagbon (as if I committed murder) instigating the NPF against me, spread lies and defamed my character to people she met through me, told people I duped her, slut shamed me at will, using her fake accounts to troll me on Facebook (Jessy Kwakpovwe) and Instagram (@drekon_c), concerning herself with my personal life which is not any of her business.

"Ifeyinwa refused to show up in NCC-NPF, Abuja for an interview on the 1st of June, 2023, after receiving an invitation from the Investigating Team.

"There is no reason why anyone who did the right thing will insist that a particular police officer, or officers under his purview/influence must handle his/her case, if there's nothing to hide.

"Why can't Miriam Gutierrez Toledo place a report in her bank or to the Spanish police in Madrid against the company she transferred money to?

"Why is she insisting that I paid her Naira in Nigeria, and then, go sort myself out with her Euros that have been held by the bank in Spain," she questioned.

Customs boss removes defaulting banks from duties collection

The Acting Comptroller-General (C-G) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, has removed defaulting banks from the Customs Duty Collection System.

The National Public Relations Officer (NPRO) of the Service, Abdullahi Maiwada (CSC) disclosed this in a statement, in Abuja, yesterday.

Although the NCS did not give details of the affected banks, it was learnt that they included some very large first and second generation banks that have refused to remit duties collected on behalf of the Customs Service to the designated banks.

He stated: “The Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has taken decisive action in response to selected Authorized Dealer Banks failing to meet Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) related to Customs Duty and statutory charge remittances.

“This decision follows a thorough audit and due process, aligning with the NCS’s commitment to upholding transparency, accountability, and efficiency in revenue collection.”

Accord to him, the primary objective was to ensure the accurate and timely remittance of Customs duties and other essential funds for national development.

He said despite the deactivation of these banks, the Comptroller General has implemented measures to minimize disruptions for importers and stakeholders within the trading ecosystem.

According to him, the trading community has been assured that all pending assessments will undergo clearance processes in line with international best practices.

He stated further: “Importers who previously relied on the deactivated banks for duty payments are advised to utilize other Authorized Dealer Banks that comply with NCS regulations.

“Stakeholders encountering challenges with a particular bank are encouraged to use alternatives that function appropriately.”

I'm a software engineer working remotely from Nigeria. I earn a 7-figure monthly salary.
With my salary only (at an average exchange rate of 850/$), it would take me about 6.6 years to save up 100 million, provided I have zero dependents and had to cater only for myself throughout those years. It's quite a naive way to project this though because a lot of things can happen along those years. But it still gives an idealistic comparison base.

So my question goes to Nigerians currently living or have lived abroad. Can you tell us the country, the job title, and how long it would take to save up to NGN100 milliion, assuming you have zero dependents and have to cater for only yourself. Do remember to factor in taxes if any and other living expenses for yourself alone

The reason for my question is not far-fetched. I'm just wondering if it's worth it to sell ones' properties worth milliions just to JAPA and go start over again. Please, refrain from dragging the country's situation into your answer or any other reason to JAPA. Kindly focus on answering the question as best as possible.

Thanks.

Ondo PDP tackles Akeredolu for staying in Oyo after returning from Germany

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, for staying in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, after returning from Germany.

Akeredolu returned to Nigeria on Thursday after a three-month medical leave in Germany.

The governor is expected to spend a number of days in Ibadan before moving to the Government House in Akure, Ondo state.

But in a statement issued on Friday, Kennedy Peretei, PDP spokesperson in Ondo, said Akeredolu’s first port of call should have been his home state.

He said it was “absurd” for the governor to stay in Oyo instead of Ondo, adding that it would have been a sign of respect to the residents of the state who had been praying for his recovery.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ondo State Chapter expected that, now that the Governor is back in Nigeria, his first point of call should have been Ondo State, where everybody prayed for his quick recovery and return to his duties,” the statement reads.

“Instead, he headed for Ibadan and instructed all State Cabinet members and State Assembly men to join him.

“This is very absurd and an insult on the sensibility of the Ondo State people. If Akeredolu has been certified fit to resume duties, let him notify the Assembly accordingly to conclude the remainder of his tenure for which he has been barely tolerated.”

The opposition party also alleged that Akeredolu is planning to relocate the Ondo government house to his residence in Oyo by not resuming duty in Ondo.

BRICS: 21 Countries Officially Agree to Ditch the US Dollar in 2023

The US dollar is facing challenges from developing countries that are threatening its status as the global reserve currency. A handful of alliances in Asia, Africa, and South America are looking to end dependency on the U.S. The BRICS and ASEAN groups are at the forefront of challenging the US dollar’s status.

Developing countries fear U.S. sanctions could hurt their economies and, therefore, want to strengthen their local currencies and economies. The de-dollarization efforts are in full swing in 2023, and nearly two dozen countries want to ditch the U.S. dollar.

Two different alliances have officially agreed to ditch the U.S. dollar for global trade in 2023. In March 2023, the ASEAN bloc was the first to decide not to use the U.S. dollar for cross-border transactions. The leaders of 10 Southeast Asian nations signed a declaration to stop using the U.S. dollar and promote their local currencies instead.

Additionally, the BRICS alliance concluded to stop settling international trade using the U.S. dollar at the summit in August this year. BRICS will use local currencies for trade and is also looking to create a common currency among member nations. The trade will be settled within the existing bloc of 10 countries and not with other nations outside the alliance.

US repositioning forces in Niger after military junta tells French troops to leave

WASHINGTON: The United States is moving some of its troops from a base in Niger’s capital Niamey — where rebel officers seized power in a July coup — to another in the Agadez area, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Washington has some 1,100 military personnel in the country, but the Defense Department says they have largely remained on bases while curtailing activities such as joint training after the military takeover in Niger.

The United States “is repositioning some of our personnel and some of our assets from Air Base 101 in Niamey to Air Base 201 in Agadez,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told journalists.
“There’s no immediate threat to US personnel or violence on the ground,” she said, describing the move as a “precautionary measure.”

A “small group” of personnel will remain at Air Base 101 following the move, which is currently ongoing, Singh said.

She also said “some non-essential personnel and contractors” had previously departed the country.
Niger has been a key base for both American and French anti-jihadist operations, and the repositioning of US troops comes after a French defense ministry source said Paris was holding holds talks with Niger on withdrawing “elements” of its presence there.

There have been days of rallies calling for Niger’s former colonial ruler to remove its forces, and military-appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine said earlier this week that “contacts” were under way about a “very swift” departure for Paris’ troops.
But Singh said there is “no tie” between the US move and “what the French military is doing right now.”

Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum was toppled on July 26 by some members of his guard and was detained along with his family.
The West African bloc ECOWAS has taken a hard line on Niger following a cascade of coups in the region, threatening to use force to restore civilian rule.

Troops took power in Mali and Burkina Faso, where like Niger, losses among the armed forces are surging in the face of a long-running jihadist insurgency.
A putsch also took place in Guinea in 2021 after the country’s octogenarian president, Alpha Conde, ran for a third term in office, a move that opponents said breached constitutional limits.
Echoing past US comments, Singh expressed hope for a negotiated solution to the situation in Niger.

“We are hopeful that diplomatic talks will continue and that the situation in Niger will be resolved diplomatically,” she said.
