BUA Cement to crash cement price from N5,500 to N3,500 per bag

BUA Cement to crash cement price from N5,500 to N3,500 per bag
Chike OlisahbyChike Olisah 6 hours ago

BUA Cement Plc has announced plans to reduce the price of cement in Nigeria from the present N5,500 to between N3,000 to N3,500.

This was made known by the Chairman of the company, Abdul Samad Rabiu, after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Rabiu revealed the cement company is adding 2 new plants at the end of the year to be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu, bringing BUA Cement’s total capacity to 17 million metric tons.

Speaking on the visit, he said this is part of its own contribution to support the efforts of the Federal Government to bring down the prices of key commodities in the country, adding that this will enable the company to bring down the price of cement to about N3,500 per bag.

What the Chairman of BUA Cement is saying
Rabiu, while speaking said,

”Let me thank his excellency Mr. President for graciously receiving me today, I came to intimate his excellency on the affairs of our cement business. We have two new lines of 3 million tons each that we will be commissioning by the end of the year.

”So, I came to intimate his excellency and also to explain to him the efforts we are making in trying to support again the efforts of the government in bringing down the price of cement. With these 6 million tons that we are commissioning by the end of the year and by the way his excellency has agreed to come and commission the plants sometime either in December or January next year. So I explained to him and

‘’So I explained to him and we want to support the efforts of the government in bringing down the cost of cement, by the time these lines are commissioned BUA Cement will be producing about 17 million tons per annum and with that we intend to bring down the cost of cement from its current level of N5,000 or N5,500 per bag to may be N3,000 to N3,500 per bag.

‘’And we can only do this because we are producing this cement locally, 80% of the raw materials that we are using to produce cement in Nigeria is mainly limestone and gypsum and of course energy is part of it of course we have gas in Nigeria. So we want to support the government, we want to support their efforts in ensuring that the price of these commodities are brought down incidentally.’’

Aiyedatiwa Pledges Loyalty To Akeredolu As Gov. Sacks Deputy’s Media Aides

Aiyedatiwa was in charge of the Sunshine State while Akeredolu received treatment in Germany for an undisclosed illness.

Ondo State Deputy Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his loyalty to his principal and state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.

Aiyedatiwa was in charge of the Sunshine State while Akeredolu received treatment in Germany for an undisclosed illness.

In a statement on Tuesday, Aiyedatiwa said some reports making the rounds in recent times about his purported disloyalty to Akeredolu were lies and aimed at causing disaffection between him and the governor.

According to the deputy governor, the reports were spread by some faceless groups and individuals in the state to soil his image for political reasons.

“The deputy governor remains loyal to his principal and no amount of fabricated lies will change that,” the statement signed by Aiyedatiwa’s spokesman, Kenneth Odusola-Stevenson, read.

“We need to remind the public that this is a continuation of the blackmail started by these same characters some months ago, with false stories planted in some media outlets against the deputy governor. However, since those lies did not yield the result they envisaged, the blackmailers have returned with fake stories about disloyalty, aimed at causing disaffection between him and the governor.

“These faceless individuals who have been hiding their identities because what they are putting out are pure fabrications, are being sponsored by those who are threatened by the profile of the deputy governor, his relationship with his boss, and the goodwill he enjoys with the people.”

The deputy governor also stated that he was in constant touch with his principal on official state matters and there was no gap between them.

Akeredolu Sacks Deputy’s Aides

Meanwhile, Akeredolu has disbanded the media team of his deputy, directing all members of the press crew to report to their various ministries and stations.

The governor in a statement by his spokesman, Richard Olatunde, said the sack is with immediate effect.

He directed the appointees to submit all government properties in their possession to the Acting Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor.

The affected aides include Press Secretary to the Governor, Kenneth Odusola; Special Assistant to Governor (New Media) Okunniga Oladipupo; and Special Assistant to the Governor (Photography) Abayomi Samson Adefolalu.

Oil Theft: Northern Forum Urges Tinubu To Call Navy To Order Over Arrests

The Northern Peoples Forum (Kwungiyar Mutanen Arewa) yesterday urged President Bola Tinubu to bring the Nigerian Navy segment operating in the oil bearing rivers of the Niger Delta back to its mandate.

The Northern Peoples Forum (Kwungiyar Mutanen Arewa) yesterday urged President Bola Tinubu to bring the Nigerian Navy segment operating in the oil bearing rivers of the Niger Delta back to its mandate.

The forum made the call plea during a protest at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, Abuja, over the arrest of some personnel of Tantita Security Limited: Asonja Goddey, Obajimi Oluwaseyifunmi, Awolowo Aribo, and Oluwadaisi Balogun by the Navy.

The forum’s chairman, Saidu Bello and national secretary, Aminu Saad Beli, expressed concern over the recent activities of the Navy in the region.

“Any circumstances under which the main source of the Nigerian economy is affected upsets not only the Nigerian state, but several ancillary units and services that rely on the Nigerian economy,” Bello said.

Fresh hope for Banky W as tribunal sacks Labour’s Attah, orders supplementary poll in Eti Osa

Banky W saw the tribunal ruling as a potential turnaround in his political career to be a federal lawmaker.

Eti-Osa federal constituency.
Giving the judgment on Monday, the tribunal also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a supplementary election in 32 polling units within 90 days, as it agreed with Banky W and Obanikoro that elections did not hold in about 40 polling units.

INEC had declared that Mr Attah winner of the election with 24,075 votes, defeating Bankole Wellington, aka Banky W, of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 18,666 votes and Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress who scored 16,901 votes.

Banky W saw the tribunal ruling as a potential turnaround in his political career to be a federal lawmaker.

In a brief post on his X handle on Monday, he tweeted, “It is possible. Still.”

The spokesperson for the Labour Party in Lagos, Olubunmi Adesanya, confirmed the decision of the tribunal to Peoples Gazette Monday night.

She said, “So what happened was that two of the three judges ruled in favour of supplementary election taking place in some areas, while the third judge said the case should be dismissed.

“We’ll know what the party will do by tomorrow. We’ll await what our legal advisers tell us before we do anything.”

N2.9bn fraud: Jonathan’s godson, two others jailed six years

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has convicted and sentenced a former Special Adviser to Dan Abia, erstwhile Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, George Turnah, and two others to six years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretence.

The two others, Ebis Orubebe and Uzorgor Chidebere, sentenced alongside Turnah by Presiding Judge, Justice A. T. Mohammed, were also convicted of money laundering, conversion of funds and forgery contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

The defendants were originally arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in May 2017 and re-arraigned on January 25, 2021, on 23 counts bordering on obtaining by false pretence, money laundering and abuse of office to the tune of N2,894,500,000.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the EECC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, and made available to newsmen.

The statement said, “They were jailed on Thursday, September 7, 2023, having been found guilty of charges preferred against them by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“Count six of the charge reads: ‘that you, George Turnah Alabh, Uzogor Silas Chidiebere, El-Godams Global Services Ltd., Turnoil and Gas Nigeria Ltd, Kolo Creek Petroleum Dev. It added, “Count 23 of the charge reads: ‘that you George Turnah Alabh in 2014 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did receive the sum of $1000,000.00 (One Million United State Dollars) (at the exchange rate of N184 to a Dollar) cash from one Umar Lawal of Hakuri Global Concept exceeding the statutory limit without going through a financial institution and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 16 (2) (b) of the same Act.’”

According to the statement, they pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

It added that the prosecuting counsel, I. Agwu, called several witnesses and tendered documents to prove the case against the defendants.

Justice Mohammed convicted and sentenced them to two years imprisonment each, starting from the date of their arrest.

The 1st defendant was ordered to pay N1,000,000 as an option of fine while the 2nd and 3rd defendants were to pay N500,000 into the Consolidated Revenue Account of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Politics › Tinubu’s Guinean Citizenship, Perjury Ignored Because He Didn’t Have Chance To D by Morbeta11(op): 4:27am On Sep 12, 2023
Tinubu’s Guinean citizenship, perjury ignored because he didn’t have chance to defend them: Appeal Court

The panel was silent on how the president’s manifest perjury should be remedied, especially as the Nigerian Constitution forbids making false submissions to the electoral office.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal said it dismissed the evidence of dual citizenship and perjury against President Bola Tinubu because Atiku Abubakar introduced the matter at a time when the president’s lawyers could no longer respond, which the justices deemed to be an “unfair tactic” that would not be tolerated.

According to the full opinion released by the Court of Appeal, Mr Abubakar alleged Mr Tinubu was unqualified to contest the presidency without providing any details to buttress the allegation in his initial petition but later “smuggled in the new facts” of Guinean citizenship hiding under the phrase “further details” when there were no details given in the first instance.

“It is now through their Reply that Petitioners, who themselves seemed to have had no clear idea of what they meant by 2nd Respondent’s non-qualification for the election or simply deliberately kept it back when filing their petition, want to now introduce through their Reply at a time when respondents have no further right of responding to them,” the court held in the September 6 decision. “Such unfair tactics cannot, and is not, allowed by our law.”

The five-member panel said that the matter of Guinean citizenship was a fact that should have been presented as a separate petition rather than as a response to Mr Tinubu’s defence, scolding the former vice-president’s lawyers as being “clever by half” when they introduced the passport that Mr Tinubu obtained from a foreign country. The passport surfaced after Mr Tinubu had already said under oath that he had never obtained foreign citizenship while submitting his application to run for president.

“The petitioners were only being clever by half when they claimed in paragraph 2.1 (b) of their Reply that they were simply giving, as they put it, ‘further details’ of the non-qualification of 2nd respondent by averring to the conviction, fine, certificate forgery and dual citizenship of 2nd Respondent that they raised in their Replies,” the judges said.

“They had never given any details of 2nd Respondent’s non-qualification and so cannot talk about ‘further details’ let alone hide under such ‘further’ details to smuggle in the new facts they averred in paragraph 1.2 (i) (ii), (iii), (iv) (v) and 2.l (b) of their Reply.”

The judges arrived at the decision even though Mr Tinubu’s lawyers, led by Wole Olanipekun, still defended the Guinean citizenship puzzle, saying it had expired when Mr Tinubu’s passport expired in 2020. The passport was issued on October 6, 2015, and expired on October 6, 2020, but passport expiry does not invalidate a holder’s citizenship.

It was also unclear whether or not Mr Tinubu was issued a new passport following the expiry of the one that was issued in 2015 and tendered in court this year, three years after it expired. Still, the expired document was sufficient to establish Mr Tinubu’s dual citizenship, which he lied that he had never obtained when asked by the electoral office INEC.

Mr Abubakar’s lawyers had said in their initial brief that Mr Tinubu was unqualified to stand election for several reasons, which they then said would be established with evidence at trial. Yet, the judges still claimed the petition was not sufficient in disclosing specifically what would be proven when the trial opened.

The panel of five justices led by Haruna Tsammani said that to adjudge Mr Tinubu — who met the four presidency criteria listed in Section 131 of the Constitution — as ineligible to run for office based on a nebulous “reason of non-qualification” contained in Mr Abubakar and PDP’s initial petition, left all parties involved including the court and electoral commission completely at sea.

“Therefore, an assertion that merely says that a person is not qualified to contest election by reason of non-qualification will leave not just the person so assailed but every other person involved, including the court, at a loss as to what the pleader has in mind,” they said.

The judges, however, failed to disclose how Mr Tinubu’s apparent perjury should be addressed, especially since the Nigerian Constitution specifically prohibits making false submissions to the electoral office. Elected politicians, including governors, have been sacked in the past by the Supreme Court for lying to INEC, and prosecution is also sometimes recommended.

Mr Abubakar, as well as his Labour Party counterpart Peter Obi, disclosed last week that the judgement was fundamentally flawed and would be appealed to the Supreme Court. Mr Tinubu and his allies have hailed the judgement as a victory that would further strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
