Politics › Mass Defection Hits APC & LP, As Over 100 Members Join PDP In Delta by morereb10(op): 8:14am On Nov 08, 2016
Many politicians and citizens of Nigeria predicted that APC in particular is a party that will be dead on arrival because all they did is to wrestle power without knowing how to proceed from their. And the fight with the man who single-handedly handed them the presidency is not a good move. Over 100 members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) in Ward 5, Ovu Inland, Ethiope East local government area, Delta state, have decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Vanguard reports.

It was also reported yesterday that Tinubu evaded to call for peace meeting with the APC chieftains which has even spell more dome to APC as a party. This came even as the Ovu PDP members passed a vote of confidence vote on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Kingsley Esiso, the state party chairman, in an enlarged meeting of the party at the residence of the ward chairman, Chief Andrew Ichikpro.

Receiving the new members into the party’s fold at the enlarged meeting of the ward, Chief Ichikpro charged the PDP faithful to be united and work relentlessly to build on the successes of the party in the area. Also speaking at the event, Chief Michael Adiotomre, leader of the party in the area said vote of confidence was passed on the governor in appreciation of the benefits Delta central senatorial district has had since the inception of his administration.

He advised all party faithful to respect elders and leaders of the party. According to him, that has been one of the core values and pride of the party. The setback for LP and APC in Delta state comes just days after the latter party lost at least 6000 members of its members in Idanre local government area of Ondo state to the PDP.

According to the defectors, their decision to join the PDP is due to their love for the PDP factional governorship candidate in the state, Eyitayo Jegede.

Politics › Buhari Should Forget About $29.9bn Loan & Go After Looted Funds – Femi Falana by morereb10(op): 6:33am On Nov 05, 2016
Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana has advised that the $29.9bn loan request by President Muhammadu Buhari will mortgage the future of Nigeria. Falana spoke at a symposium tagged: “X-raying 50 years of military intervention in Nigeria’s politics”, organised by the Department of Political Science, University of Lagos.

Falana urged the President to forget about the loan and begin aggressive recovery of the country’s looted funds stashed away in foreign countries.

He said:

“Between 1978 and 1986, this country incurred debts to the extent that we did not know how much we owed under the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. They had to engage the services of a consultant in the West to tell us what we owed, and of course, the London Paris Club gave us a figure. That was the extent to which governance deteriorated.

“By the time [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo was paying the debts, in one fell swoop in 2005, this country parted with $12.4bn for the West to forgive our debts. Meanwhile, they were the real sinners. At that time, on both the principal and the interest, we had paid $42bn. That amount alone could have eradicated poverty in the entire Africa.

“Now again, President Buhari wants to get a loan of $30bn. You know what that means? For generations unborn, we will mortgage their future, except the money is genuinely meant for infrastructural development, which is usually not the case once the money comes in. So Buhari should forget about the $30bn loan when he can get more than that if he goes after our stolen money in the West.”

Politics › Lagos State Bans LAGBUS Buses From Operating In BRT Lane by morereb10(op): 4:26am On Nov 05, 2016
Lagos State Government has revoked franchises issued to LAGBUS Asset management, operators of LAGBUS buses, over use of Ikorodu corridor, even as it disclosed plans to introduce Intelligent Traffic System along Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor.

The Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Anofiu Elegushi, who disclosed the ban yesterday at a press briefing in Ikeja, said with effect from Monday next week all LAGBUS buses will no longer utilise the BRT corridor to load, drop and travel.

He stated the LAGBUS buses can only provide end to end bus services using the Expressway and service lanes along the Ikorodu Road stretch. Explaining the decision, the acting commissioner noted that the state government was determined to enhance and boost commuters experience along the corridor. He added that the present arrangement has constrained the capacity of the BRT bus services to cater for the people.

“The restriction does not extend to charter staff buses run by LAGBUS; does not preclude access to depot along Ikorodu road and express services are allowed with only few designated stops. “All routes from Ikorodu hinterland will now terminate at TOS Benson bus stop after which there will be no loading of passengers. “However, the operations of LAGBUS buses have been moved to other 14 routes identified by the Lagos State Metropolitan Transport Master plan,” he said.

Elegushi added that one other route will take off before the end of the year, saying the new plan as in being in the overall interest of Lagosians. The commissioner also banned the on board sales of tickets on board buses describing it as the harbinger of unstructured service.

Literature › Wole Soyinka: "I Will Tear My Green Card If Donald Trump Wins" by morereb10(op): 6:01am On Nov 03, 2016
The Nobel literature laureate Wole Soyinka has told students that if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States next week, he will leave the country.

“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that,” said Soyinka, who is scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs this autumn. “The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”

The Nigerian playwright and poet, who was imprisoned in Nigeria during its civil war, later fleeing the country and receiving a death sentence in absentia, urged young people to stand up against oppression.

Giving a seminar to students at Oxford University, he also laid into Brexit, saying it was a “ridiculous decision”, and part of an international rise in what he called “ultranationalism”.

It’s a constant fight to try to get a nation to recognise its own noble persuasions … the loftiness of human possibility
“What is happening in Europe shouldn’t surprise any of us … It has happened before,” he said. “We were here when Enoch Powell was leading his thugs out to drive blacks from here … it’s a constant fight to try to get a nation to recognise its own noble persuasions, its own persuasions of the loftiness of human possibility. It’s for young people like you to say no to them whenever that happens.”

Soyinka was Africa’s first Nobel laureate in literature, winning in 1986 for writing that “in a wide cultural perspective and with poetic overtones fashions the drama of existence”.

He told the students that African literature today was “robust, without a question, especially with the younger generation… I think we of the older are getting a little bit tired, and I think our production gets thinner and thinner. But fortunately, it doesn’t worry any of us, as far as I know, because the body of literature that is coming out [is] varied and liberated,” he said.

“African literature suffered from some kind of ideological spasm in which the younger generation was bombarded by a sense of ideological duty, in other words it was bombarded with a very simplistic notion by leftist radical writers, very reformative revolutionary thinkers, that all literature is ideological and therefore writers must ensure that their writing illustrates progressive ideologies.”

This, he said, had “inhibited a number of very talented writers, crippled their sense of liberal creativity, forced them to try and narrow themselves into a very tight prism of viewing phenomena, humour, relationships, even politics.” But “fortunately this next generation has been freeing itself and the result is really marvellous, very varied – the women in particular”.

Asked about Bob Dylan’s unexpected crowning as winner of this year’s Nobel laureate, Soyinka was reluctant to be drawn, though he did say: “Since I’ve written quite a number of songs for my plays, I would like to be nominated for a Grammy”.

Romance › Photos Of Newly Wedded Bride & Groom Simulating Sex, Blows Up Internet by morereb10(op): 9:56am On Nov 02, 2016
Seriously, they couldn't wait till they get home. Sex during wedding? Well, why not? But is all as it seems?

Wedding photos are traditionally predictable and sometimes rather boring to watch — with the bride and groom looking dreamily into each other’s eyes and happy faces surrounding them. But Toni, 26, and Gareth Ferguson, 29, decided to think out of box and came with an idea of taking sexual-themed wedding photos.

So, the newlyweds were simulating sex acts while their photographer was capturing saucy moments in one of the parks of Whitehaven, Cumbria, England.

Gareth said: “The photo was both of our ideas. We wanted to do something a bit different. Nobody knew about it except the photographer.

He found it hilarious when we told him what we wanted before the big day – he loved it.We got all our ‘normal’ photos out the way and then when everyone else was being seated snuck off for this one.

Hahahah....

Politics › Mrs Folorunsho Alakija Was Among The 25 Nigerians I Made Billionaires - Obasanjo by morereb10(op): 1:23pm On Oct 30, 2016
Nigeria's former President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Saturday in Lagos that Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, Africa’s richest woman by Forbes reckoning, was among the 25 billionaires he made during his tenure as President. Obasanjo stated this at the 2016 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Forum.

The former president was reacting to an allegation by Alakija at the event, that the Obasanjo administration frustrated her effort when she ventured into oil business. Folorunsho Alakija and Obasanjo Alakija, who spoke before Obasanjo, alleged that his administration illegally took an oil block allocated to her company after her family had invested all its savings to strike oil in commercial quantity.

This oil block is in 5000 feet depth of water and was extremely difficult to explore. “It took 15 years from the time that we were awarded the licence in 1993 till 2008 when we struck the first oil “When this event happened, 60 per cent out of our 60 per cent equity in the business, was forcefully taken from us by the government of the day without due process. “We had to fight back by going to court to seek redress and it took another 12 years for justice to be served in our favour. “In all those years it was my trust in God, my perseverance and the support of my family that got me going,” she said. . She used her experiences to charge the 2000 budding entrepreneurs at the event to be dogged, determined and not to give up in the face of challenges.

When Obasanjo spoke, the former president seized the opportunity to reply to the allegation by Alakija. “There is a saying in my part of the world that when a proverb touches you and you failed to reply, then you are a coward,” he said. Obasanjo explained that the action of the government then was in line with the Mining Act, which regulates oil prospection and exploration. “For you to come here and say that, for no cause whatsoever, you were denied what was rightfully yours, is not fair.

I do not know you from Adam and there is no reason I would have denied you what rightfully belonged to you. “So, you have struggled, and you have struck oil. God bless your heart. “My delight is to be able to create Nigerian billionaire and I always say it that my aim, when I was in government was to create 50 Nigerian billionaires. “Unfortunately I failed. I created only 25 and Madam, you are one of them,” he said. Obasanjo hailed the vision of Mr Tony Elumelu for helping to build African young entrepreneurs with his resources. He also urged the government to create conducive environment for people to move businesses into the country. The former president urged government to relax its visa policy and company registration process to encourage investors.

He said the government should create certification centres in the country for easy exportation of agro processed products. The President of Sierra Leone, Bai Koroma noted that what transpired between Obasanjo and Alakija was part of the challenges and difficulties that leaders lived with in the discharge of their duties. With limited resources competing for unlimited demands and expectations from the people, leaders were seen to be larger than life, he said. Koroma also commended Elumelu for his project for African young entrepreneurs adding that his vision resonated with a new Africa development agenda.

Politics › President Buahri Celebrates African First Lady Broadcaster Agbaje-williams At 80 by morereb10(op): 6:30pm On Oct 29, 2016
Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari is celebrating legendary newscaster, presenter and first African female to appear on television, Mrs Anike Agbaje-Williams, on her 80th birthday. In a statement on Saturday, President Buhari joined Williams’ family, friends and the media profession, in celebrating the broadcaster who ruled the industry for more than 30 years.

Known for her sonorous voice, Anike Agbaje-Williams started out early with the first television station in Africa in 1959, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

As one of the pioneer African television broadcasters, better known as ‘‘Africa’s First Lady of the Tube’’, the President believes the veteran journalist worked hard to inform, educate and entertain her listeners, and to also sustain the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo who established the WNTV as a ‘‘surrogate teacher’’.

The President commended the quintessential courage and persistent spirit of Williams who constantly pushed herself to improve on her God-given talent until she reached the pinnacle of her career, carting home many awards even after retirement.

President Buhari prayed that the almighty God would grant Williams longer life, good health and more strength in her newfound love of singing in the choir after retirement.
