BusinessRe: Ecowas To Introduce Single Currency By 2020 – Ekweremadu by morpheus24: 10:05pm On Feb 20, 2012
East Africa's COMESA and Southern Africa's SADc are better positioned to integrate their economies compared to a loosely knit ECOWAS. We have too many regional issues to even contemplate that idea in the next 8 years. It is quite ridiculous to consider that option.

Intra African trade is below 10% with m sot of the regional trade going on in the east and the south. Most West African states are way behind in terms of democratic initiatives that will faciliate trade and as a bloc we virtually produce nothing to exchange with each other that is of significant value add from the primary/ raw material stage.

.Have you asked yourself, how did our forebears survived without Christianity or Islam?
As a matter of fact, some of us have

Answer: We formulated our own religious beliefs

Danka7777:
we Africans need to know, the bible as we know it today was written based upon ancient African literature and proverbs. If you take a cursory look at the 10 commandments handed down to Moses, around 4000-6000 yrs ago (remember I mentioned a while ago that Blacks have lived on this planet for 50,000 yrs ago, which means they were here before Moses, Christ, e.t.c) these commandments were actually taken out from ancient African proverbs.
My dear fellow the above is a lot of heresay. Can you point us to some convincing fact including the claim that black people were around 50,000 years ago or the ten commandments were extrapolations of Africna proverbs. Who are you getting that information from.?

That is exactly what I think of your opposition of him by the way. Accusations of tribalism can work both ways you know.

The rest of the world can make any claims of Soludo's service as CBN Governor, thats their choice. For me and for many other people he was a great public servant. I can not wait to see Soludo contribute his service to the development of South East while the rest of you carry on in your un-ending debate about his service at CBN.
You brought up South east, not me. Too obvious!! :0

Good luck in electing him governor. We truly wish you well!

Any rational being know that Soludo and Sanusi are just not in the same league, I just don't like to engage in these kinds of debate because Nigerians just like to deny the facts for whatever reason!
I smell the rotten stink of tribalism as usual. We wish you well in electing him as Anambra's governor.

Dis Guy:
how much funds was created for agriculture, manufacturing and SME under Soludo, we know how much was created for the oil n gas traders n stock market speculators

how much was for the real economy, creating shaky banking jobs with mini skirt marketers is not sustainable job creation
Thank you o jare, leaving Sanusi to come clean up the mess. Under Soludo's watch loans to the agric sector ( the real sector) was under 3%, yet Agriculture accounts for 40% of GDP and was the major sector that bolstered Nigeria's 7% GDP growth. Meanwhile money flows went to speculators in the stock market and lending to Oil traders/markets but they hit a snag when oil prices fell in 2008-2009 post the global financial crisis.

Sanusi reversed trends in financing to the real sector, re-strucutred loans to these sectors by helping companies such as (notore) an indigenous fertilizer company obtain competivie loans to stay afloat , saving jobs in the REAL SECTOR

Apart from the recapitalization exercises Soludo left banks with the same issues including bad corporate governance, lack of regulatory oversight concerning in house loan deals, toomuch money supply etc etc etc.

igbo2011:
If all theAfrican corrupt leaders put their looted money into African banks then this can lead to economic growth because busnesses can grow due to loans.
There is already a huge surplus of capital in Nigerian banks that is sufficient enough to lend out to small SME's. The problem is in the incentive for "private' owned banks to loan money to SME sectors that have the potential to grow. Banks are profit driven entities that will be unwilling to lend out to say a farmer who wishes to expand his production outfit. The farmer lacks formal education and access to knowledge and skills to navigate the lending system in order to secure a loan. How do you solve that problem. Simply repatriated stolen funds and having it sit around does not resolve the question , under what framwork will it be disbursed to sectors that require it to grow since these funds will be deposited in private held entities. You might be refering to the role the CBN plays in incentivizing the private sector banks to loan money out. That process is ongoing as we speak. The CBN continues to intevene to create regulatory frameworks to enhance economic activity in the country.

igbo2011:
1. Power: With power we will be able to start to manufacture products and make our own products instead of importing everything,
2. Roads: with a good road network then trasnporting things will be better. Also with all these death trap roads, morel ives will be saved.
3. Hospitals: Our hospitals aren't the best. Once we have great hospitals this can be a great industry. many nigerians go abroad for treatment when we should be treated in Nigeria
4. Schools: Our schools must teach everyon their true GREAt history and how much we did for this world. We must teach religion and ethnic tolerance and teach the kids how much bad things the Europeans have done and how we shouldn't trust foreignors. We should trust ourselvse more. Tis inferiority complex is hurting Nigeria's economy. if nobody will by Nigerian goods then Nigerians won't open up Nigerian businesses. All this importing is very bad, we should make our own things.
5. Military: We need a great military that puts a lot of money into making great weapons and planes to defend ourselves or Africa in general.
Those are in no order but with all of that Nigeria will be a haven. Too many foreign investors are coming to Africa for business, Africans need to invest in each other and buy each other's products. We need to go to tourism within Africa!!
All the above require enabling environments for private citizens to improve what is already on ground with support from govenrmtn to create environemtns that will allow the population purseue economic activity and education

They are the ones who input dicatators like Mubuto, Comapre, or Outtara and back them up with weapons and troops. Look at what happened to Ivory Coast. Unless all Africans around Africa do this and do an African spring then it will keep on happening.
Igbo2011.

most of us are aware of the west's self interests regarding Africa. This is undeniable. However, in my humble opinion, the revolution you advocate in Africa will not come about as a result of agitating passions and prejudices nor will solutions come from driving western powers out of Africa. I am still wondering how that is going to be achieved? Can you enlighten me?

Africa's transformation will be born out of structural changes that will subject the western powers to their own self created, self promoting economic devices. When has a revolution ever eliminated the existence of "elite" masters vs "impoverished' citizenry. All it does is shake up a few feathers, a little redistribution of wealth or power is compromised by those who possess it, only for new systems to be devised on how to take this back under the same noses of the revolutionaries.

Its an inefficient process that sustains itself only in the short term as things gradually return to status quo. let me be clear in saying that  I  understand the role of revolutions in antagonizing corrupt authority, however I find it over simplistic and down right archaic in truly transforming the lives of Africans due to is manipulative tendencies and propaganda driven rhetoric.

You can create lasting change by beating your "opponent" at his own game. This requires great patience, great intellect and a burgeoning dissemination of relevant and transformative information sharing process. China is a great example of this fact.

pendo89:
Are we therefore our own enemies of progress??
There is a huge deficit in continental awarness that stems from a lack of incorporating continental subject matters into educational curriculums to develop knowledge of Africans in general which would strengthen ties amongst the populous. Emphasis continues to be put on our differences rather than what we have in common.  This fact, coupled with an ongoing country by country struggle of national identity  hinders regional and continental integration. This is where I believe the problem lies.

A solution would be to revamp the current educational curriculums to incorporate subject matters that deal with general continental and regional issues from the primary up to tertiary levels of education and fostering exchange programs that move students through different countries and learning experiences. This is in line with how globally  connected the world and indeed Africa is moving towards.

pendo89:
Why cant Africans think and develop themselves? Is it possible to do without western influence at all?? I have both Yes and No answers.
Why are we not taking advantage of Trade blocs? Cz we don't even know they exist !
It is difficult to start from a fresh template of political or economic thought processes when most of your systems and structures have been borrowed or indoctrinated into 1st and 2nd world global systems that have not really taken into account the dynamism of African socio-political issues. We can develop ourselves and indeed we are striving to do so. What we struggle with is the methodology to adopt that will indeed fit in with our social values , structures and complexities.

Many continue to advocate a complete diassociation from western institutions, western values and western economic models. If we are to follow this path then what alternate models do we build our economic systems on and how do we attempt to integrate these new found models into global structures as it is near impossible to exist without some sort of cooperation with the rest of the planet. We cannot be isolationist in the long term as this will undoubtedlly prove unsustainable.

There are several regional trade blocs that are currently fine tuning custom unions and tarrif free movements of goods and services which  are  mainly eas Africa's COMESA and southern Afirca's SADC, little can be said about ECOWAS for now. These economic integration policies are sure to  boost regional trade and inter Africa trade as well.  The stumbling block lies with governments strugglling with natinoal interets over a cohesive regional strucutre that is advantageious to all within that bloc.

Its happending but its not happening fast enough.

The other school of thought hopes to build on already existing systems borrowed from western societies in terms of laissze affair private owned Capitalist models that feel that government is incapabel of driving efficiency in business and the emrging state capitalit model dominant in the Eastern part of the world that is hybrid of socialist and communist ideologies fused with capital controlled by the state. the idea is to modify these philosophies to fit African  contexts. The new information and semantic age we are evolving  into requires new thought processes against the old rhetoric of seperate and equalize.
