Angry mob have set a notorious thief ablaze for allegedly stealing plantain in Akwa Ibom State, Reports.

From The Information Gathered By , The incident happened on Friday morning, March 4, along Umuahia road in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

According to sources in the community, Who Quickly Notified On Facebook, Said the suspect identified simply as Mendie was allegedly notorious in snatching of phones and other criminal activities in the area.

A member of the community who witnessed the mob action said that Mendie was released from prison last year after serving a three years jail term.

"I have talk to him, begged him, asked him to learn a trade that I will sponsor him. That same night he stole a phone and ran away. On his return I pleaded with him to stop that act but he refused. It wasn't long the police apprehended him and he was given a three years jail term which he served. When he was released he became worst. He was a terror in the neighborhood. We all tried to change this narrative today but to no avail,"

Another source said: "I asked of this particular guy when I came to IK they told me he’s in prison. I remember making one statement that day. I told my elder brother that Mendie will come out and become worst. We all know that our prisons are not correctional units, it’s just a place where people get locked up, maltreated and released when they elapsed their prison sentence.

"They come out more angry and aggressive... Stealing is addictive just like drugs what Mendie and his likes needs is rehab not jail. Burning him wouldn't stop his likes from emerging in our society. He was a talented kid it's sad he ended this way." the source added.

He also said that access to university education is not for everybody, adding that in developed nations; only a few people get to that level.

He said;

“There is a fundamental assumption that is wrong: university education is not for employability. That one is basic.

“If you have a good university education, you should be an employer of labour.

“If you look at systems all over the world, only a certain percentage of citizens in the country should be able to go to a university. The rest should go to what they call a polytechnic, a monotechnic, a technical college etc. such that by the time they finish from those institutions of learning, as it was in Nigeria in the past, they can move into the industry as artisans and all that.”

The ASUU UNILAG leader also said that love for university education in the country is unnecessary.

Ashiru added;

“And that’s why the pressure is on university education. Check any developed country in the world.

“Those who populate their universities are not from their citizens.”

Security Operatives in the University of Calabar, UNICAL have arrested one Kinghope Ubi for using a dummy gun to threaten students and snatching their phones.

Ubi was arrested at the ICT Centre of the institution on Thursday March 3, after leading his two friends to point the dummy gun at Akomaye Ephraim and collecting his Tecno Camon 16 Premium phone valued at N108,000.

When interrogated, he confessed that he came into the university to visit his girlfriend and thereafter, he decided to snatch some phones from students.

Kinghope Ubi, who is not a student of UNICAL, said that his friend gave him the dummy gun to point at students and collect their phones.

After arresting him, they found a passport of him wearing Nigeria Customs Service uniform. He told newsmen that he was dismissed from the Customs Service in 2021.

The suspect was handed over to the Anti-Kindapping and Cultism Squad of the Police for further action.
