When you say need a lot of batteries, hope you’re not referring to regular lead acid batteries?

Technology is improving and the likes of Tesla now have utility scale batteries that have already been deployed. Below is a pic of a 100MW Tesla utility battery. Combined with solar, that can power soo many homes.

Imagine if every state had one to start, that’s already 3,600MW of clean energy.
See, stop exciting your mind with technological advancement that can't be mass produced. You think if it's that easy, US will have over 20 Nuclear Power Plants? Same with France with over 50 Nuclear Reactors.

Their cost per unit of energy generated remains too high for now. If it was that easy everyone will have dropped others. You can see that the average Nigerian can only afford to keep the basics in his home or office running on renewables. No one loves NEPA but renewables are pricey for similar capacity on any scale.

A poor country/continent does not start its industrial journey by adopting the most expensive route. China is number one in installed solar capacity but hefore then they were number one in the dirtiest fuel, coal. Their route was coal to wealth to ethics. Na peson wey chop dey obey lockdown.

If we want to be Mr. Nice Environmental guy and develop at the same time in a timely manner we simply cannot avoid going nuclear.
Well put. The average Nigerian only knows nuclear to be nuclear weapons. They love show of power between US and North Korea that anything nuclear means bomb and destruction to them.

Nigeria is too afro-pessimist to lead Africa. Even with our xenophobic tendencies in South Africa, we are however more optimistic about the continent. Ironic, I know.
You are very correct. And South Africa is miles ahead of Nigeria in terms of everything technology. In education the same.

Africa should consider the nuclear option for its energy needs? Hmmmm...... that's not only scary but it doesn't make sense for now. Nukes have the following challenges

1. They are very expensive: Have you seen the costs of nuclear power projects across the world? The price can go as high as 6 dollar per a watt if you pay for it without borrowing. If you need some financing, then it's going to be as high as 10 dollar per a watt. Just an example: the United Kingdom is currently having a Hinkley C power plant being built in sommerset. That plant costs about 23 billion pounds. The initial price is just around 18 billion pounds but it was later revised to 23 billion pounds so that the project could be completed in time. Whats the power rating of hinkley C? Just 3 gigawatts. Now compare that to the planned Mambilla hydro power project costing just 6 billion dollars with a capacity of 3 gigawatts costing just around 6 billion dollars!!!!! For now african countries don't have the financial horsepower to fund a nuclear power plant project.

2. They are quite risky: Anything goes wrong with nuclear and you will be looking at an almost irreparable damage and reputation. For now, the nuclear tech currently in use are not advisable since they generate long term waste (lasting millions of years). Even in developed countries, where to dump the nuclear waste is currently being challenged and communities in the us are protesting against it.

The only good thing about nuclear power is the fact that they have an almost perfect capacity factor (producing power round the clock 24 hours in a day 7 days in a week) This is unlike natural gas, nuclear, wind, hydro or solar energy systems which could run out of "fuel" for the long term. Yes, it is true that nukes don't emit carbon, but they have far more dangerous waste that could last for an eternity.
This is a wrong analysis to only subject the cost to the cost of production. Nuclear surely do have larges start up or build cost but it remains the cheapest longterm.

Have you checked the cost of maintaining hydro? The cost of gas? etc.

We're not ready for a nuclear power plant. With the sort of leaders we have in Nigeria, the chances of seeing what happened in Chernobyl happen again, is high. Note that, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded because of a design flaw and lies upon lies.
The people governing us here in Nigeria are liars as well as thieves. They'll only use about 60% of allocated funds to build and embezzle the rest. Thus, leading to a substandard power plant full of flaws and built on a foundation of lies.
Chernobyl exploded first because of the flood, not design faults. There's hardly any known Nuclear power plant disaster caused by design faults. Chernobyl was a civil engineering design fault. Simple.

You are just complicating issues and saying nothing. You can equally say the same of Ajaokuta, etc.

A nuclear power plant is not only monitored by host country, rather other countries. Also, the construction is expensive but there's no embezzlement of such fund. It's known already and nothing of such can happen.

If Hiroshima and Nagasaki were to happen in any African country, that may be end of such country.

What we need is to human capacity. We have available resources that is yet to be harnessed. Abundant coal and abundant sunlight. Those European countries do not have quarter of those resources hence their desire to use what is best for them.

No African country is ready for such.
Coal? Sunlight? With heavy rainfall in Africa? You mentioned Hiroshima and Nagazaki yet you forgot it's a nuclear bomb not nuclear power plant.

Some of you do not truly understand these energy concepts. I don't want to talk about coal (its never an option). Opting for solar energy is the worst option for a country, small countries let alone a large countries like us. It's cheap, but it can't support large industries. You need a vast land to put it and you also need to get a lot of batteries which in itself isn't good.

Do you know the number of nuclear reactors in US alone?

Thanks very much for your detailed response. Honestly France is out of my list now. I really need a job in my area Of studies for my long term goal of PR. I rather spend more to go to other European countries where english is widely spoken like Denmark Sweden etc. At least I only have to worry about my skills & not language barrier. I will still learn the local language but it won’t be priority like France. I will only just be visiting there for holiday.

You’re lucky to get a sponsored PhD. I’m very sure you will make it there especially as you speak English too,
Lol, France is more or less like UK. Come, study and leave. It's even very difficult to work and study. Extremely difficult. You will enjoy your stay here if you are funded. Coming to France hoping to work and study is actually suicidal. Depending on your school anyway. But generally, it's very difficult as doing so will deeply affect your studies. To be forward with the truth, it's hard to effectively and efficiently work and study here in France.

For my school it's impossible. There's a Mexican classmate of mine who was living big in his country that he was able to afford my tuition fee which is 12k euro/year. He paid the tuition fee hoping he will work and study for his living expenses. In my school, it's impossible to work and study. So when the little he had finished, the guy deferred his admission and returned back to Mexico.

This is the reality. Except you have all the money saved or scholarship, coming to France with the hope of working and studying isn't recommended. You can try it for public schools but for grande ecoles, it's impossible. This is true for science related courses.

With the increased risk of living in Nigeria, having up to 3 becomes important. You can't begin to think like someone living in US or other developed countries when you know you are living in a high risk country.

I do wish both of you the best, but bro, just born 3 or 4.

Uranium is a big deal for France. Even if Niger are so dumb to allow the French explore their country's resource at such cheap price. Some years ago I watched the documentary about how France was exploring Niger's uranium, of course majority of the population are dumb... few only stood up against the French. You know the rest is history.

Africa needs sound mind leadership.
The environmental implication of mining Uranium lasts forever. Mining alone constitutes 72% of environmental problems of Nuclear Power. Except in cases of Nuclear Accidents, I think it's best to operate a NPP than to be mining Uranium. Little wonder France stopped all it's mining activities and focused in other countries.

Unfortunately, Africa is only good in making noise, leaving in delusion of how rich they are or how wise they are. Niger is so dumb. Nothing stopped them from exploring NPP option like SA and Ghana. Namibia too. Namibia alone takes 46% of global release of radioactive materials to the environment caused by the mining activities happening in the country.

Same thing done for oil, we don't have working refinery, yet we have oil. No one wants to take responsibility yet, unfortunately, the world is moving forward and we are spiraling full circle backwards.

Each time I see pictures taking in Nigeria, each time I see pictures coming from Lagos, Onitsha, Kano, etc, I weep. We are doomed people.

So I decided to step out to check the compliance against the compliance seen in Nigeria. I was actually the only one outside. However, towards the evening, you'd see people jogging around, or taking a walk with their dogs. Also, the French government has not done anything for individuals. All it's measure has been for SMEs and companies.

Hi Guys,

I trust we are all safe in this challenging times. Covid-19 has no doubt affected everyone and everything. 2020 is no longer a year to pursue any dream, rather, a year to stay alive. It's as if everything is on standstill.

For us, though lectures are being done online, truth is, Nuclear Engineering is most hit. Most of our courses require we use or stay close to the department network in order access some applications with strict license. These applications are sensitive applications that are well secured and it's use strictly monitored. Also, other hands on activities/courses like lab work are also cancelled. We are only left with few theoretical course. Interesting anyway. For students and lecturers, we all miss the physical engagements. Some of our courses has been pushed to September (About 2 or 3).

Another aspect the emergence of covid-19 affected badly is in the area of examination. The French would naturally prefer to subject you into their usual hard system, thus, online examination model has not received much acceptance by most the french people especially my school. I wouldn't know if they will push some exams till September or proceed to do it online. However, one of our lecturer has already proposed an oral examination where he will be asking us questions himself and watch you respond to them. huh huh This is a bad idea to my classmates as some of us are already preparing weapons of mass destruction should we be allowed to write exam online; being monitored by Time/duration of the exam.

It's been predicted that Africa would be worst hit by Covid-19, and from the way things are going in Nigeria, I am sure that prediction will happen sooner than predicted. I have taken time to study the response of Nigerians to Covid-19 and realized we are not yet serious. Everyone including the government. Why we play politics in everything beats my imagination. Well, it's the reason why we are less developed country. We truly do not understand how things are done in civilized society, I just weep for the country.

Please keep staying safe
