Buddha3:
Since 1999, please kindly mention one detailed instance the CBN increased interest rate and the measure succeeded in reducing borrowing rate and mopping up excess cash from the public transactional system. Just one instance.
When interest rate is hiked, they are discouraging borrowing. The purpose is NOT for you to start borrowing from the bank since interest rate is high. It is a tool used to mop up currency in circulation, and it works for this purpose, always.
BusinessRe: Bank Of America Urges Nigeria To Hike Interest Rate To 25.5% To Curb Inflation by MT: 3:38pm On Jul 03, 2023
Buddha3:
A hike in interest rates on loans is even going to equate to a swifter surge in the inflation figures.

I cannot be a businessman who takes a loan from the bank, pays over a 20percent interest on servicing that loan and the general public will then expect me to give out my goods or services at moderate or subsidised rates. No way!

I have to make a profit to be able to service my loan, keep my business afloat and equally meet my own needs. So everything eventually trickles down to more hardship for the ordinary masses.

Sometimes these economists and analysts talk like air-headed neophytes. You people should just rub honey on the balls of ordinary Nigerian men and hang us by those balls atop ants infested trees. Because the hardship is eventually going to be felt the most by Nigerian men who are tasked with supporting themselves, their wives and kids and family members.

huh huh
High interest rate is a two-edged sword.

When CBN increases interest rate, it is a mean to mop up currency in circulation, which will lead to few currencies circulating. Less money will eventually be chasing goods and services, which will eventually reduce inflation.

We aren't against the reforms, eventually everything must change. The case here is that the the priorities are misplaced and senseless policies being put in place. Petrol subsidy was removed. Good, now the people are suffering from the insane prices without palliatives, what happened to making all refineries functional before removing the subsidy in order to drop the costs of fuel. Isn't that what a right thinking person would do? How will bringing students loans that are highly unaccessible and hiking the price in tution fees whilst still leaving the government funding in education assist in making the educational sector a better place? These are the issues.

What PRICE is the elite, wealthy and ruling class paying to achieve these??! Are the long-suffering citizens meant to bear every brunt for a better tomorrow??!

What is in place to eradicate wastage and embezzlement??!

What has been done to at least half the wages and allowances of those elected and appointed into power??!
Now you are asking the right questions. The Elite, wealthy and ruling class are already paying prices and this current administration must ensure they pay a lot more. Loopholes that are being blocked are affecting their revenues big time.

The executive arm of the current administration cannot set the wages of the legislatures. He does not have that authority according to the constitution.

This is the time the pressure groups suppose to mount immense pressure on the legislatures, the state governors, state house of assemblies, local govt chairmen and even the Judiciary.

You're ignorant.

Poor or average people don't send their children abroad for bachelors. It's when those kids graduate hustle fir money and then they find their way abroad for masters where they pay the high tuition.

Also, abroad, the tuition fee locals pay is different from international. Education is heavily subsidies for local students, even some cases EU student also enjoy some form of subsidy. This is to encourage them to come to school. They will have payment plans of up to 5 or 8 installments for the same heavily subsidised tuition fee for local students.

Please pity the poor struggling to educate their children, the market woman, low income earner.e.t.c
The bolded have student loan to access as well in Nigeria.

International student fees pay for about 3 local students fee in the UK. UK is using their schools to generate foreign exchange despite most of the courses being rubbish.

When our universities are well.positioned, we will attract international students who will serve as another means of generating foreign exchanges

Nigeria cannot continue on the old paths and except changes we all scream for.

China has the 2nd largest economy in the world, when she started her own reforms, it came with extreme pains. Now, they are producing almost everything the world is using.

Reforms must bring pain. We cannot continue in the old ways. If all the previous administrations had introduced these reforms, the current president will just build on them.

I will try to explain a little Economic concept that you might not be aware of...

Actually, China's exact currency rate to the usd is really not far off as portrayed, however due to China's heavy production based economy they dubiously undervalue their currency deliberately- so as to sustain continuity in mass scale production by attractive production prices & costs.

So an ideal instance for China is to keep their currency at least 5 steps behind the USD value.

China does not want a situation where 1RMB = 1USD even though theoretically speaking it is almost the case.
Thank you.

People dont even understand that a "strong" currency is a double edged sword. When a country currency is too strong compared to others, it discourages local production (export) and make such country heavily reliant on import, which will eventually kill such country in the long run.
BusinessRe: Naira Now Undervalued After Float, Bank Of America Says by MT: 11:45am On Jun 30, 2023
I laugh when people rush to tout Peter Obi as our Messiah.

What would he have done different ?.

Continue to defend the naira against the dollar using our dwindling foreign reserves

or

Float the naira ?

The first will destroy Nigeria while the latter will at least build up our foreign reserve which can be used for other things, aside the ROUTINE intervention to defend the naira. It has also eliminated round tripping to a very large extent since the there is only thin margin between the bank rate and the black market rate.

China INTENTIONALLY devalues her currency to stimulate export. It is not a bad thing only that we do not produce enough locally to take advantage of the situation. And you cant realistically expect an administration that is less than 100 days to have stimulated local production exponentially.

So, tell me what Obi would have done differently?

You are showing poor scholarly attributes by cherrypicking to suit your narrow and biased opinion. This is a wider copy of the aim and objectives from that same site.

Now, can you explain in what context "fighting fiercely" for cut in cost of governance falls in your bolded? The part i bolded is what can even be said to be close to something like cut in cost of governance and you can clearly see that the word "influence" is used, and even that must be within the purview of interest of workers and trade unions.

Go back and read what i wrote. I said you are painting NLC like a pressure group so you can dump the responsibility of ensuring govt cuts cost of governance on them while absolving the political leaders whose direct responsibility it is, and who have the powers to do so. You claimed if the president who has the powers to carry out such reforms attempts it, he'll be impeached but you want NLC, a worker's union to "fight fiercely" for it. Can you see your barefaced hypocrisy?

You claimed NLC have no business asking for minimum wage increase, one of its core mandates because of fear of inflation. But you think govt should float naira and remove subsidy without recourse to the inflationary result when it is govt's core mandate to curb inflation. Another hypocrisy.

Now let me ask you. If NLC were to take your advice to "fight fiercely" and call for an indefinite strike to press home their demands to get the govt to cut cost of running, would you hail them for being patriots or claim they are simply saboteurs and have no business with such requests? I hope you will find it in you to answer truthfully.

Like i said, NLC is strictly for advancement of workers' rights and interest not public policy formulation or implementation. There are CSOs who are involved in public policy and good governance as core areas of interest such as CSLAC, SERAP etc. You jumped on NLC because you know they pose the most potent threat to any failing and unpopular govt not because you really think they should be at the forefront of such demand. It's a strawman tactics employed by propagandists. And in this case, it is very lame.
Stop writing epistle in a need to be forcefully correct.

Why did NLC shut down the nation when MKO Abiola election was truncated? Did that has anything to do with worker's welfare. It was strictly democracy issue.

Why did NLC adopt Obi as the presidential candidate; did that have to do with worker's right.

You read it clearly on NLC website that apart from defending worker's rights, they "also promote and defend a Nigerian nation that would be just, democratic, transparent and prosperous", yet you still kept on ranting. You should know when to stop when you are wrong.

I didnt write that NLC did not have the power to fight for increment, I was just explaining to you that it will lead to inflation. You cant compare it to floating currency which will free more money for the Government. Tell me one advantage that increasing the salary of workers will have in Nigeria, apart from leading to inflation. Their purchasing power will also be eroded as the cost of things will rise. Value is stored in money, mister.

The moment you dragged Tinubu into the issue, I knew where you pitched your tent. You are an irredeemable cynic and you cant be pleased with this current administration. I repeat, Obi can do nothing in the state of this country if he is elected as the President. No shortcut. It will get worse before it can get better
.

Rest. You have a myopic view of events

This is the first line of your link. Unfortunately, you failed to read. Typical of half-baked Nigerian graduates. NLC gave FG an advice. I expect you know an advice is not something you "fight fiercely" to have implemented. I have also noticed you have been calling NLC a pressure group. Your aim is to make NLC a strawman to cover incompetence and insincerity of your paymasters. NLC is a labour union whose mandate and responsibility is to workers. You should know the difference between that and a pressure group as you have been putting it.

You have descended to the US not fencing the entire border. You see how half smart you are now? There is over 900km of border wall in the US with other areas covered by sensors, cameras and drones, yet you are saying, at least they didn't build everything. Such a dumb riposte!!

You have now arrived at it is because of hate for Tinubu. Does my "hate" for Tinubu have any bearing on his ability to perform or otherwise?

Does my hate for him increase how much his policies affect me good or bad, or does your love for him reduce the effect of subsidy, electricity and forex on your pocket? Try and be rational na
This is culled from the NLC website (https://www.nlcng.org/aims-and-objectives-of-nlc/)

"The fundamental aims and objectives of the Congress are to protect, defend, and promote the rights, well being and the interests of all workers, pensioners, the trade unions and the working class in general; and also to promote and defend a Nigerian nation that would be just, democratic, transparent and prosperous through the attainment of the following objectives"

Can you now see your folly?

Also, read this excerpt from a scholarly article, culled from: https://unjpe.com/index.php/UNJPE/article/view/66

The first line reads..........................

" This paper presents a study of pressure group politics in Nigeria with a focus on the activities of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the past eleven years."

So, show me an article that does not see NLC as a pressure group according to your warped sense of reasoning.

Regarding the US border, you expect Nigeria to be using drones, cameras etc to monitor her borders. Do you know how much US spends on all that and despite all their efforts, people still go in illegally. Can Nigeria afford it? Is your plan REALISTIC ?

I have your time to expose your shallow way of arguing. People that are poorly educated are the worst set of people to engage in an intellectual discourse indeed.

Shove your advice down your pocket. It is useless to me. Save it for your fellow zombies. I'm only here to expose your hypocrisy as a paid agent.
What part of Nigeria have you been to? Is it Lagos or Oyo, Niger or Kwara to tell me about Nigeria's borders. Even an kid who has been to badagry will see all the modified vehicles going to and fro the border without anyone stopping them yet this dude is capping nonsense. FYI, even the US has a border wall. Yes, that's the wall you think is a stupid idea with your laughing emoji. And millions of those illegal migrants get caught and deported and the US has never closed its borders simply due to the activities of smugglers. What they do is tighten border security like a responsible govt should.

You can quote the part of NLC mandate that gives them the responsibility to "fight fiercely" for govt running cost reduction. NLC's mandate is workers' welfare. If those you voted into office do not have enough patriotism in them to reduce the cost of governance, it is only an hypocrite that will push that to NLC who have no business with it. It is just like an employee asking his employer to prune down the cost of running the office. Does it not sound daft to even you?

And it's funny you think increasing the wages of workers will increase inflation but not subsidy removal or floating exchange rate. Do you even realize that it is the same govt that took both decisions that has a responsibility to curb inflation? To show you how watery your point is, same govt that floated the naira just three weeks ago is defending the naira this week. Your govt is opening your yansh up to IMF and WB to come and rip you off yet you are complaining against wage increment. You think this is the first govt to float Naira or attempt subsidy removal? Go and get yourself properly educated before you start typing abeg.

So the President can remove social welfare and he will not be impeached but he cannot reduce govt running cost else he will be impeached. Are you even listening to yourself? Whose interests should be supreme to the President? The generality of Nigerians or a few politicians? I thought y'all said TInubu has all the balls and courage to do whatever he wants. Suddenly he's at the mercy of politicians!! Hypocrisy again.

Suddenly nothing is easy anymore. You are just making halfwitty excuse. If your govt know they can't improve on things, then they have no business making it worse.

Again shove your advice in your throat
You said NLC has no mandate to press the government to cut cost of governance. It seems you are an half illiterate. Read this.

https://thenationonlineng.net/nlc-govt-cut-cost-governance/

Maybe you do not know what is called a "pressure group", go and get educated about it.

Referring to the US, did the US fence the entire border?

It's obvious your write up was driven by your hatred for Tinubu. Nothing you can do about it, he is your President.

Admit it and stop this deep hatred that is eating you up. Again, high blood pressure is real.

This is the problem with govt defenders like you. Your hypocrisy stinks and you try to hide in under the garb of being rational.
The govt is very quick to close border but you make excuses for them that policing same border they close and open at will is complex and costly. Why don't they just leave the border as it is then instead of turning it to a gate they close and open at will?

You have suddenly turned the issue of cutting cost of governance to NLC vs Govt in a tit for tat manner. If govt removes subsidy, NLC should "fight fiercely" to reduce cost of running govt. May I ask you if that's part of the core mandate of NLC? NLC is presently asking for minimum wage review and they're yet to make headway yet you add fighting for reduction of running cost of govt to their plate. May i ask you what exactly is on govt's(executive and legislature) plate then?
Fixing power sector is not easy? But removing subsidy on power and floating forex leading to electricity tariff hike is abi?
You're really not making any sense where building a nation is concerned
I will first advise you to stop being emotional. High blood pressure is real and it is no respecter of a person.

You claim you are rational, and yet you dont know that when it comes to smuggling, smugglers dont pass through the official border. They turn any part of our perimeter to entry and exit. The illegal aliens going into US, are they making use of the normal official route ?. Try and be reasonable. Like I earlier said, you have never seen any part of the perimeter of Nigeria, maybe you will suggest it should be fenced cheesy grin.

NLC is a pressure group, and it is right under their purview to press the Govt to reduce cost of governance. You claim to be learned, yet you dont know that if NLC keeps fighting for increase in salary, it will lead to inflation which will erode any gains the NLC might feel they have made. How many percentage of Nigerians are civil servants? Increasing the value of the naira is more reasonable to increase the purchasing power of the people. This wont happen overnight but they need to keep pressing the Govt.

You are asking about the function of the executive of the executive / Legislature - In your mind, the president will just say things and it will start happening or the legislature will wake up one day to reduce their own earning. Immense pressure from outside can force their hands, and remember the power of the president is NOT absolute. He is not a King and he is bound by the constitution. Most of what you ask the president to do, if he attempts it, he will be impeached and kicked out of the office.

As for the power sector, you are not being realistic if you feel it is that easy. Even South Africa is rationing electricity due to drop in their power grid. It amazes me how some people who cannot govern a family of 3 will suddenly wake up to be unrealistically advising someone who is governing the most populous black nation. If it is that easy, you should have thrown your hat into the ring and contest.

In a bid to sound political correct, think of your health first because the way you are sounding can only lead to one outcome.

They should reduce the cost of governance , their allowances and lots of waste to be cut first. Government is about the people and not about the politicians.

They should fix the power sector and provide enablers for the manufacturing sector

There are lots to be done before total removal of subsidy. Everyday we hear this politician stole 130 billon, another 77 billion….. unending looting.
