obaaderemi: @MtuMsuper..those senators will not adopt swahili for the same reason they wouldn't adopt any of the major nigerian languages. Each of the three major tribes sees itself as a nation. The entire north speaks hausa inspite of the fact that many of the tribes in the north are not even hausas.Hausa in northern Nigeria is like swahili in kenya because the population of northern nigeria is over 40million.If the north should split from Nigeria, the official language would be hausa;same goes for the other tribes. In that case, english will no longer be as important as it is now.The fallout of colonialism is a big headache across Africa. So what holds Nigerians together? Linguistically speaking. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by MtuMsuper: 7:38am On Dec 25, 2016 |
obaaderemi: Like the hsbc advert says,'local intelligence is important'.Only a nigerian can understand Nigeria.A senator once suggested that senate proceedings be done in the 3 major languages. The senators from smaller tribes shouted 'blue murder'.But each major tribe still takes its language very seriously.Naija is complex and diverse. The only swahili i know is 'kiungulia.' Swahili was already the lingua franca of East Africa for several centuries before colonialism. It was a language of trade. Its use also doesn't signify ethnic domination by the native Swahili speakers (who have a very tiny population in % terms ). Its use is comparable to what English does today in most parts of the world or what Latin did in European classical times, or what Hindi and Mandarin do in India and China respectively. If the senators couldn't agree, is there a special reason they cannot adopt a language like kiswahili? It bothers me when you bump into nigerians living in Kenya who have to go through the day speaking in English to local kenyans (who though we understand. it, do not use it every single minute, and it immediately identifies you as alien) ,and some even try to use pidgin here, i have seen it with my own eyes. Many feel no need to teach themselves simple phrases that could help them get served a cup of tea or a glass of water and in my opinion that is perfect testament as to the state of one's mind towards the locals-disdain. I think in this regard(having a common tongue spoken by everyone ), you Nigerians have alot to learn from us. |

obaaderemi: All the major languages are studied up to university level here in naija too.the first newspaper in nigeria was a yoruba language paper(1850s).our music is majorly in our local languages and are doing well beyond our borders.i learnt igbo in secondary school though i am yoruba. When a random kenyan goes to the market he bargains in kiswahili, dude. It's the national language!! Even in the diaspora, the first instinct is to greet each other and to gossip in kiswahili. Its compulsory in education to the last year of secondary education. Broken or fluent, we all speak some version of it. You don't walk into a kenyan scenario and start bragging in pidgin hehehe. We are Africans speaking an African tongue oga. When we meet another kiswahili speaker, the first assumption is that he's a Tanzanian, and it's always mostly true. I hope you taught yourself some. |

Kiswahili is an African tongue and is the national language of Kenya. We walking the talk, bro. We can study it up to PhD level at university as well. We have kiswahili language newspapers, radio and tv, and you can fill a govt form in kiswahili. We walking the talk, bro. |

obaaderemi: The guy was the third kenyan prick whose knowledge of English literacy I had questioned today.Their education is a mess.See,bro,it's a shame when africans have to show their proficiency in a whiteman's language.left to my own device as a teenager,i would have preferred learning another african language as a 2nd language to learning english but then we are WHAT we are in africa.I didnt start this grammar thing here, the kenyans did.each time they lose an argument they insult the poster's language ability when they indeed have a poor understanding of english.enough of the grammar stuff, let's talk development, economic strength and potential. Most kenyans are trilingual. |

naijalander: But the end product of education is good character. I still don't get what you mean but you are entitled to an opinion. To learn something, you need to understand the vocabulary used in the course content as well as accompanying scenarios, the language as a whole is a whole new story entirely. The end point of communication is understanding and response, you don't have to demean someone because you speak a language better than they do. And don't say cos I studied in Kenya, I know English, Kenyans speak way much worse English than the average Nigerian in fact let's just say you have Kenyan English and Nigerian English because roughly the same can be said about Nigeria. Oga, we all have accents, and as far as butchering another man's language is concerned, we all know who does it better. On accents, we all have one. Accents merely identify where someone grew up in their formative years. I personally leave alot of people confused as my accent is a strange mix of kenyan and southern african. If you say kenyan accents are so lousy, why do you think call centres prefer to locate in our tiny, miniscule Kenya? Sorry, i have traveled far and wide and i can assure you there are several nationalities who have thick accents difficult to get around and most people i know agree 9ja accent is smack in that category. PS: I LOOOOOVE my Kenyan accent and will not exchange it for anything, even if the naira hits 600 to the $. |

Guess who saved nigerians from buying a basket of tomatoes for the price of a bicycle :
Nigeria battles ‘Tuta absoluta’, the Ebola ravaging tomato fields May 25 2016 - 8:27am
Share5 « PREVIOUS | NEXT » Categorized as Agriculture Business News Nigerian News Tagged as Chief Audu OgbehDr Manzo MaigariMinister of Agriculturetomatotuta absoluta pest *The pest is why tomato is expensive in the market
Kano's tomato traders: cost of tomato jumps through the roof Kano’s tomato traders: cost of tomato jumps through the roof The Federal Government has engaged experts to find solution to the spread of `tuta absoluta,’ a pest currently ravaging tomato farms in the country.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, made this known at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ogbeh said the pest (tuta absoluta) was discovered in South America in 1912 where it ravaged many farms before it spread to Europe and then to Asia and now to East and West Africa.
He said the pest came into Nigeria from Niger Republic, saying that it is a very powerful infestation that could make it impossible for the country to grow tomatoes, if not dealt with.
Ogbeh said the price of tomatoes had gone so high that a basket now sells for between N35, 000 to N42, 000 in Lagos.
He said that many housewives could not afford to buy the soup ingredient any longer.
“We have called in experts and we have studied the profile of what we have to do with the pest.
“Unfortunately, ordinary pesticides cannot deal with this `tuta absoluta’ because it has a way of multiplying so fast.
“It produces almost 250 offspring per cycle; we are in contact with a group which had dealt with this in other countries and they are offering us solutions.
“In the next few days we shall get to work on this and begin treatment.
“It is going to be quite expensive as it will cost about five naira per tomato plant, “ he said.
The minister said the pest had not spread across the country as it is still restricted to Katsina, Kano, Gombe, Jigawa and Plateau States for now.
Ogbeh said the treatment would have to be at the level of the nursery before planting so that the tomatoes can resist the disease.
The minister explained that the pest could also attack pepper and Irish potatoes, stressing that the country was combating a very serious disease.
He said the experts had also offered a variety of tomato, which guarantees high yields under high rainfall, pointing out that the variety had been tested in some parts of the South-West.
He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government in collaboration with the State Governments were doing everything possible to stem the spread of the pest.
In Kaduna, a state of emergency on tomatoes has been declared as the pest affected over 200 farms in the State.
The State Government has also dispatched officials to seek intervention from Kenya, where there is said to be an extract from a plant that kills the insects.
Dr Manzo Maigari, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, announced this during an interactive session with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Kaduna.
Maigari said more than 200 tomato farms had been affected in three local government areas, with an estimated loss of N1 billion.
The commissioner said eight other states in the north had been affected by blight caused by insect that destroys the plant within three hours.
He said it caused the dramatic rise in the price of tomato to about N42,000 per basket.
According to him, the state government dispatched officials of the ministry to seek intervention from Kenya, where there is said to be an extract from a plant that kills the insects. Maigari said there was a similar outbreak in the state on a smaller scale last year but that there was no concrete measures taken to tackle it.
“There was no documentation on it and when we came in we did not know about it, the reason why it has hit us hard.
“It is a serious issue we are dealing with in the state and other states affected in the region.’’
Maigari said the Dangote Tomato paste factory had temporarily closed down production following the outbreak of the blight causing loss of thousands of jobs.
He, however, said that the government had taken other measures to address the issue |

LeSudAfricaine: Just a quick question, if you post pictures and keep saying stuff like" the best in Africa" or " the most blah blah"in Africa" etc. Are you aware of what's happening in the rest of the continent? Many nigerians think Africa begins and ends in Nigeria. For instance, can she name just one ethnic group from Tanzania,Zimbabwe or Burkina Faso without googling. Can she name us one dish from DR Congo or Senegal? A famous person from Uganda or Togo? What of the main agricultural product of Cote D'Ivoire or of Zambia? The major political party in Tanzania or in Zimbabwe? ..... I guess not because she sits on her backside everyday trying to be pretty and painting henna all over her body. Her africa begins and ends with an obsession over herself and her looks. Eish, stup1d just hit a new low. |

So petroleum companies avoid tax, get tax breaks and pollute the entire place without any consequences, while transferring their profits to European tax heavens, and jobs to Europe and US. Gerrrarrahia! You mean Nigeria budget for health is less than 1.66 bn $ ??!! See why would someone want to give tax breaks in a mono economy esp anytime in the last decade. Unless of course, it ends up in someone's pocket. Robbing Paul to pay paul, in other words, it can't be done without tacit involvement of the big kahunas of the said place. In short, eating aka kula nyama . Meanwhile, 100 mn people defecate in the open while all this goes on. |

Nigeria seems to be like a punishment posting for many expatriates to Africa, while Nairobi and joburg seem overwhelmingly favoured. Someone mentioned that nigerians are so hilarious they go to a foreign land, meet a nigerian selling roast corn by the roadside, and they immediately proclaim to the folks back home that they now control the food industry there. Effing hilarious. |

mkenya254: This thread has become too repetitive.
Here is why I Like Kenya. We have accepted the issues we have and are working to solve them while Nigerians still have their heads in the sand and keep talking of how great they are yet this does not reflect on the common Nigerian.
Let us looks at some things. I gave very practical applications of how the government of Kenya has adopted technology and is even experimenting with some technologies that not many countries tries in the world are willing to at the moment e. G. Blockchain. Right now I can do a land registry search, company registration, driver license renewal, submit tax returns, get insurance etc all online. @ianSweet replies by producing a list of Nigerians who hold patents by creating new technologies. The sad fact is that for all people in the list she produced, there is NO single technology that has been adopted in anyway to create a successful startup or has changed the life of any ordinary Nigerian in Nigeria or wherever. But look at Kenya, Mpesa brought financial services to even the most marginalized communities living in the desert, mkopo solar provides power to people that have not been reached by the national grid etc. In a country whose 70% of the population lives below 1Usd per day we have the most successful startups being online shopping instead of agriculture... Lol
Despite many reports having been linked to here showing that 66% of people in Lagos are in a slum. Many Nigerians with the aim of national pride are willing to dispell Facts and pretend that slums are non existent and resort to posting endless pictures of slums they have googled to be in Nairobi. The sad fact was especially when they keep reiterating that Makoko has been completely destroyed yet I have seen Makoko with my own eyes thus year and several articles show that only a VERY SMALL part of Makoko was demolished. What is Kenya doing? We have slum upgrade plans that despite facing many hiccups and are slower than expected have worked for some slum dwellers.
About white and Indian masters. This is coming from a country where people are not proud of being black and even segregate and admonish other Africans for having a dark complexion... Lol. Majority of large companies in Nigeria have a lot of foreign shareholding including their iconic banks. Majority of construction projects in Nigeria like most developing African countries are by the Chinese but Nigeria is very quick to admonish Kenya when we have any debt or chinese funded operation :/ The level of hypocrisy is appaling
Misguided ambitions. Nigeria is exploring space technology yet it does not even have enough electrical power to provide 24hr electricity to any of it's residents Nigeria is building a war ship at billions of naira but cannot tackle and finish the Boko Haram who of totally destroyed would lead to billions being injected into Nigeria by investors in the marginalized northern areas. If these billions were pumped into agriculture, such a green country with lots of rivers would stop importing basic necessities for its citizens e.g. Milk and other common produce.
Industrialization. Nigerians claim that their industries are the main reasons why they are lacking 24/7 power in their homes.. Lol. I mean what is the need for these industries if I am going to go home to a dark house on most nights.
Closing statements. Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa and the 5th largest in the world yet they cannot compare themselves with most of the top 10 oil producers in the world and majority of their refined oil is imported #sigh , Nigeria has the largest population in Africa(cheap labour) and hundreds of thousands of arable and fertile land but imports Extremely basic food products that can easily be grown, a country that admonishes other countries for accommodating people of other races while they practice the worst kind of racism I can think of, black on black racism, a country whose eyes are closed due to the fact that their big ignorant heads are too far up their asses to notice that their large GDP and a few rich men e.g. Dankote do not in any way show the success of their country if the common citizen still has no power, lives in a oil polluted environment(spills and smoke) and noise polluted environment due to generators, is more likely to die due to insecurity(Boko Haram in the northern states), is likely not to be paid in time even by a government employer(majority of the states have difficulty in paying workers on time). The ordinary citizen is also more likely to be out of a job(unemployment is at 13% and the recent 700000 applications for 500 Firs jobs is just a big shame). A country that struggles to finance a 20bn USD budget on a 500bn USD GDP is a joke of a country. I mean the Kenyan budget is 22bn USD for 45m Kenyans.
That said, in Kenya we also do have our problems and are working towards creating practical solutions(not a bunch of useless patents in some shelf) but the ability of Nigerians to ignore facts and official reports posted here just for national pride is just shocking and goes on to show the arrogant nature they are associated with or maybe a poor education system that would lead someone to disapprove UN reports and other official reports because they have never stepped out of their village or country Yup. in a nutshell. |

arinzeejikonye: [s] Yea that sounds mysterious, You must understand that militancy is hydraheaded, multidimensional and perpetrated as a subtenarean subtaffuge, Even, the ioc, downstream mncs,n likes suffer from pipe line wreckage, vandalism etc,the issue is that, while at that there is contant repair and maintainance operation on those wrecked pipe,
Another issue can be that that, the old national grid system, left many pipeline on-surface,hence govt is burrying them underneath for protection
Another dimension,is that the locals felt cheated that the contract for surveillance of pipe line n oil assets was robbed off them by the present govt
Another of it is that,it is the only means to make their voice heard, even as this issues sprang, while the present govt attempted to hault the amnesty programme
Another dimension is that, during the military juntas in time past little or no allotment was given to the indegenes of niger delta in prospective oil licencing, extraction and production, which gave rise to marginalization,
Another thing to it is the neglect, environmental degradation, oil spillage, loss of aquatic resources, poor water heigyene,n destruction of farms due to oil exploration, extraction n production
Now there are calls for captive decentraliza5ion of production of alternative power source,in that, there is oil discoveries in the north, west and middle belt, apart from east n niger delta, hence, hydro dams, solar plants etc
While the need for govt to run an all inclusive govt,on the pivot of fairness, equity, equality and forthrightness.
There is the building of more refineries, both single line, modular, multitask etc ongoing, while also the rechanelling of pipe line, with more amphibious units of the army civil defence, navy ,airforce, mounting their surveillance and reconaissance on the national assets.
Another dimension to this is that, there is the lucrative busting of pipe line as a means of theft for crude and profiteering via oil bunkering by exparts n locals,
Another dimension is that the cabals of the downstream sector in tandem with iocs, vandaliae the oil facilities n pipes as a means of perpetual attraction of turn around maintainance -tam and repair projects to be awarded them by proxies of their companies[/s]. The last time i recall seeing queues at pumping stations anywhere in Kenya was in the late 80s. Get your basic chain values working mister, we wont understand all that gibberish. A lot of African Americans are coming back to their Naija roots and we welcome them. The Ooni of Ife and Alaafin of Oyo have repeatedly apologized over the years. The current Ooni did so a few months ago on his tour of the US. Yet the vast majority of them prefer Ghana, Senegal and to a lesser extent, Cote d'Ivoire. And what has your country, which is the successor state to all those slave selling kingdoms, done to correct or at least ameliorate that historic stain. President Mathieu Kerekou of rep of Benin, in 1986 went to a church in the Bronx, NY to publicly apologise amid his own tears to the afro descendants of the US about his country's role in that infernal trade. naijalander: Yes. This I have no argument against but then holistically, Nigerian men are more responsible to women than Kenyan men. This does not mean Kenyan men do not make fine husbands to their wives, in fact many of the most recent married ones have completely reinvented Kenyan men to be romantic and down to earth, I think ages 25 to 45 have more control over their women because they are employed and and have been influenced internationally by what they see. I appreciate Kenya because people there have an accommodating spirit which nurtures growth. It is only in recent years the good people in Kenya began to take control.
Uhuru was tear gassed a few years ago now he's president. Kenya is growing and is prospering but she often forgets her benefactors and gets overtly nationalistic. Seriously, why don't you just GTFO of kenya. Your attitudes are insufferable. Believe me, never underestimate the social sensibilities of even the poorest kenyan. Kenya is not the sort of place you can get away with in your face disrespect to an individual on account of his/her socio economic or other objective. Which is where you lack terribly. So you mean you walk around with this sub attitude that all these fools occupying this country are useless, for how many donkey years. Just GTFO. |
