WebmastersFont Testing On Browsers by my2cents(op): 4:02pm On Aug 22, 2006
Would you like to be able to test out various fonts with varying line-heights, weights, styles, etc. side by side? Would you like to test these IN a browser (FF or IE, take your pick)? How about on-the-fly updates and a tool that will give you the css? Well Font Tester is here for you:

http://www.fonttester.com/

Works great for applying varying styles to blocks of text. You can test up to 3 different variations.

Enjoy!

FamilyRe: Sign Bill Clinton's Birthday Card by my2cents(op): 2:30am On Aug 22, 2006
By America's first "black (note this is in quotes grin)" president, I mean that he was the first american prez to show concern for the black community. He was the first to appreciate blacks for who they were. Even on his first inaugural day, the choir, I believe, was black and the famed Black poet, Maya Angelou gave an oration.

It can't get any better than that. Granted Bush has appointed 2 blks to high posts in his time whereas Clinton had a blk secretary, I dare say that if Clinton hadn't set precedent, Bush probably wouldn't have gone as far. Again, I dare say cool
PoliticsRe: Gov.attah Should Be Allow To Rule As A President by my2cents(m): 8:31pm On Aug 21, 2006
Ity,

when u say "allow", do u imply that whoever the prez will be isn't chosen by the pple but rather by a group of kingmakers? If yes, then that is just plain wrong as the citizens as a whole should decide, not the other way around.

Finally, based on ur profile photo, i assume u took ur photo at or around Ibom plaza abi? wink wink
WebmastersRe: Creating Dynamic Pages Using Dreamweaver/php/mysql/asp/access by my2cents(m): 9:23pm On Aug 18, 2006
Always good to use a program that makes your life easier. That notwithstanding, it is always good to know what is happening "underneath the hood".

Case in point: u hv a car and use it rather than go places on foot. U don't care how it takes you there. All u care about is that when u insert the key and turn it, the car starts. One day, you wake up to find out it won't start. If you knew anything about cars, you would immediately pop open the hood (abi bonnet for naija? wink) and c if you could fix it yourself, thus saving you money. The alternative would be to have a mechanic look at it and charge u accordingly. And that assumes the mechanic knows what he/she is doing. The mechanic could also tell u that you have an engine problem costing N50,000, when actually, you could have purchased a new water hose for pennies and fixed the actual problem yourself.

So to reiterate, coding from scratch good; using a tool, better; using a tool to code yet knowing enough about coding from scratch that you can switch b/w the 2 if need be and being able to manipulate any code based on your knowledge of what happens behind the scenes thus not having to ask someone what is going on, best cool

Hello boys and girls cool

Let's c how well you know google, shall we? wink

What was the original name for Google, b4 it was changed to "Google"?

What does that original word mean?

Why was the named changed to "Google"?

Alright nerds and geeks (oops, I meant boys and girls LOL), I await your responses grin
ComputersSome Google Search Tips by my2cents(op): 6:27pm On Aug 18, 2006
Some of you may already know this, but for those of you like me (up until 5 hrs ago anyway wink) who don't, here are a couple of google search tips that I just found out about.

To search for the definition of a word, type "define: <word you want defined>" in the search box

To get the reviews for a movie, type "movie: <movie you want info on>" in the search box

I hope this helps those to which this applies to become better googlers grin

ajiboyet:
Racism does exist, but you shouldn't let it reign over you. Rather, you should use it to get you ahead. In other words, make your haters your motivators grin

Having said that, what I meant, and sorry if I didn't make it clear, is that we shouldn't have the "u been think say na only una fit do am. We for naija fit do am too" attitude. If they don't want to respect us, rather than make them respect us, we should apply our brain power towards the development of our own country. Once they see it working for us, trust me, they will be the ones coming to us for ideas.

As long as we continue using oyibo inventions, rather than coming up with something of our own (like the chinese for instance), oyibo will never respect us.

I hope this clarifies my stance on the issue.
WebmastersRe: Web Design Job - I Need A Web Designer Of The Highest Calibre by my2cents(m): 3:30pm On Aug 17, 2006
timmy,

I c u r back to your ways. I thought you had said you would refrain from your tone of voice on this forum.

To set the record str8 (as can be confirmed by my earlier posts), a 900+ page static website is plain wrong. The site's design/architecture is okay but that doesn't take from the fact that having a 900+ page static website is just plain wrong from the following perspectives: abstraction, maintenance and re-use, to mention but a few.

As for "ate his words", I seriously doubt that o. I will reserve my comments on that one. As is the case b/w Israel and Hezbollah, I thought we are observing a "technical cease-fire". Don't, e jo, re-open that can of worms again wink

Panache:
I think you should look at yourself as a human being capable of competing with fellow humans, rather than as a Nigerian who can compete with "Americans, europeans and asians". Fact is, we are all humans and as such have the same brain cells, granted degrees of "smartness" vary from one person to the other. It is a fact though (I can't remember where I read this, but trust me, it is true) that *on average*, asians are the smartest, in part due to larger heads (no laugh o) which means larger brain size/capacity.

As for why I joined NL:
To share knowledge with my peers world over and see how I can play my part to help Naija come up on the IT map. I will confess that prior to even hearing of NL, I didn't believe that we had such impressive talent. Minus the sextellectual posters, we have enormous talent that is begging to be tapped.

I take it you still hvnt found the "designer of the highest calibre" yet? grin Geez, who would have thought this thread wd grow so long? I will keep on posting this "hv u found someone yet" every 10 threads until you say you have found someone LOL

Afam:
Granted, it is good to stick with what you know, as far as "graphics for the web" software goes, tis Photoshop/Fireworks anytime. There may be others (in fact, am sure there are others grin) but in terms of power, I am pretty sure that none beats Photoshop/Fireworks. As far as technology goes, na so o. Today na AJAX, tomorrow na ZEUS. One person comes up with a name for technology that quite frankly existed since the 70s and like wildfire, everyone wants to do it and then come the abusers. Check out that ahmadinejad blog. AJAX gone wild.

Like you, as even described by job title at work, I am a developer/architect. I may not give you the best looking website, but I sure the hell will give you a site that will certainly enrich the user exprerience, which is all that counts these days. The company I work for averages 12 million *unique* visitors a month. I am sure we are doing something right cool

Orikinla LOL grin

Noogle is actually quite creative, if u ask me wink Not to get off-point, I would actually call the search engine something that is more reflective of Nigeria so that google or some butt-hole doesn't claim the credit for it.

Perhaps www.find-am.com maybe? cool
WebmastersThe World's 15 Most Influential Websites by my2cents(op): 5:16pm On Aug 15, 2006
As the Internet turns 15 years old this month, a UK-based newspaper decided to come up with the top 15 most influential websites:

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,1843263,00.html

Note, that this doesn't directly translate into hits per day. Rather these are just sites that have influenced our lives in one way or the other. I for one visit at least 5 of the 15 on a daily basis. Visiting those sites to me is similar to the buzz coffee drinkers get. If I don't visit them, even when on vacation, I could suffer withdrawal symptoms grin

Enjoy!!
ComputersRe: What Area In IT Should I Go For? by my2cents(m): 4:43pm On Aug 15, 2006
Well, coming from the US point of view, I would frown upon certifications. Here, whenever we see certifications, we throw the resume/CV in the trash - they come a dime a dozen now and most pple cram for the stuff. I personally know of a DBA with 20 years experience who failed the MCDBA exam 3 times shocked shocked If you read all the necessary books and take the sample exams, u r good to go. That doesn't however imply that u hv work experience as each place is different.

I would rather say you attend classes specific to what u want to learn, at a reputable institution, follow this up with reading on your own, and doing side projects on sites like rentacoder, scriptlance, etc. Then get a job and/or work for urself. Then again, I don't know where u r and what I have just laid out may not help. Either way, good luck!!
Nairaland GeneralRe: Do We Smell? by my2cents(m): 4:39pm On Aug 15, 2006
Every culture has their "signature smell". Asians "boom" of garlic, some whites "boom" of having not bathed in days, etc.

The issue to me isn't wether or not we boom, but appreciating our respective scents for what they are. Granted, there are those who just plain "boom" LOL. Oyibo hv their scent but act as if they don't and consequently say all others "stink". Very inconsiderate and bigotted.

Case in point:
Wen my sis arrived in the US and started high school, she returned home on day 2 with a bottle of perfume from her teacher. My parents were actually happy that she got the perfume. I told them to be more sceptical. I have been around oyibo for many years and know that if u c an old woman running faster than a younger woman, something is amiss. I told them to go ask the teacher why she gave my sis the gift. It turns out it was because she noticed my sister had "a body odor" shocked shocked
EventsRe: Party Hall/garden In Lagos - For Hosting Weddings, Birthday Parties Etc. by my2cents(m): 4:19pm On Aug 15, 2006
Geez,

Call me weird, coming from the web field, but you would think that a place so "elegant" would have a better-looking website. Also, unless I am missing something, I c nothing about pricing and photos aren't that enticing.

Having said that smiley, I am happy to see that there is yet another alternative in the venue realm. With weddings/funerals happening in naija at least once a week (someone told me that it is now more like once a day, but I kno dey dia and so I no sabie grin), this is the best biz model out there, in my opinion. Hopefully with more of such, competition will help drive down the hideous costs as well.
RomanceRe: Nigerian Girls Cannot Kiss by my2cents(m): 4:12pm On Aug 15, 2006
anniebear, r u trying to say something, without actually saying it? wink

Anyways, I think we should divide the naija girls into those who are back in naija vs those in the diaspora. Narrowing it down further, we should divide the naija babes in naija into those in the towns and those in the villages.

Culturally, at least spking for the 4 or so tribes of the 200+ I know about grin, kissing isn't part of the culture. If at all it is, it is meant as a greeting and not for arousal. Moreover, practice makes perfect. Without kissing many pple (as unfortunate as it may sound), there is no way of extingusing b/w a good kiss and a bad one. I mean, if you only date on person and marry that person, the kiss will be your only experience and as such will be the best, right? wink
ComputersRe: What Area In IT Should I Go For? by my2cents(m): 4:05pm On Aug 15, 2006
So, if I were to live my IT life all over again (in this case, I will gladly do it thru u cool), here are a few of what I would have done:

1) Be a database expert, preferably data warehousing and data mining

2) Be a JAVA expert

3) Join the Web development bandwagon - everything will be going to the web soon. Thanks to open source technologies like LAMP (thatz Linux Apache Mysql and Php, for those wey water never dry for nyash yet grin) and AJAX, websites are now mirroring desktop applications and reaching more and more pple on a widescale level. Web apps are now justifyingly being called software

4) Be a networking expert

1, 2 and 4, I chose cos those will always be in demand, no matter what. 3 I chose cos tis the wave of the future.

I hope this helps
WebmastersRe: Site Critique: Www.ahmadinejad.ir by my2cents(m): 3:54pm On Aug 15, 2006
Zahy, what are you trying to do? Get us all monitored by "the powers that be"? he he.

For me:

1) Font used is too small

2) Usability is very poor: Hard to navigate the site and understand what each click (in this case, weird-looking arrows wink) is supposed to do

3) English version isn't totally english - I would like to know what the other arabic inscriptions mean. Perhaps the header for instance cd have been implemented as a CSS background, so that the arabic inscription would be a text overlay, which would have been easier to translate, internationalization-wise

Bottomline:

1) The site, though simple and to the point, should be the title of the sequel to "Girls gone wild", only this time the title should be "AJAX gone wild"

2) Me thinks the site was just thrown together at the last minute as a means for the dude to help spread his propaganda, as per the Lebanon v Israel war grin

Is it just me or is it odd that the blog launched right after his interview with the US journalist Mike Wallace (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/09/60minutes/main1879867.shtml)?

I know, I know, it might just b the igbo I smoked this morning before logging on to Nairaland. Sometimes it makes me so high, I swear I can touch the sky cool
